Volkswagen takes its Tiguan mainstream for 2018, boosting its cargo capacity and giving up a little bit of the driving character that makes VWs popular with enthusiasts. The new Tiguan can hold more stuff and seat more people in a new optional third row, and it offers some helpful new safety features, including automatic emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alerts. The new Tiguan also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is particularly helpful since some trims do not offer navigation.
All 2018 Tiguans get a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 184 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive versions get EPA estimates of 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined, while versions with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system are estimated at 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined. Tiguans with 4Motion can also be ordered with the Active Control system, which offers three non-standard settings for challenging conditions as well as a Sport mode. Also, telling us "you failed to hit those numbers" for fuel economy followed by " I had it in sport mode a lot" is a moot point. It's not rated at those numbers in sport mode..
I have no issue with my now one month old Tiguan. SE - AWD is awesome. Love everything about it. Don't listen to the $$ in this video.
SE fully loaded out the door is $25k how does one go wrong?? You don't. It is fine on curvy roads as I blasted up the Saw Mill Parkway and enjoyed the trip very well. Peppy but not a rocket.
I love it !! My first VDub and now not my last.
I agree. I got my SE FWD $23K out the door. Its not fast but it gets the job done.
Once you drive this car, you will know how smooth and quiet of a cabin it has! As the tiers go through rough pavement, and perhaps falls in some ditches, the passengers and drivers don’t feel much bumps, most cars I’ve owned I’ve felt the road and had lots of road noise. Been leasing cars for past 21 years, from Honda’s to even Cadillacs, this would be close to an American SUV, as far as interior space for its class and comfortability:)
Love the new Tiguan👍👍
A crossover SUV is (not) a mini van. It's a small SUV.
It's an SUV... they are meant for comfort driving with occasional off-road use. I just don't get why this guy wants "sports" when reliability is by far the most significant consumer demand.
Complaining about the VW brand not having spirited driving in this model like the GTI & R-Line is like saying you can't believe this Ford Explorer doesn't do burnouts like a Mustang GT...
SoundgardenMan 😂😂😂
True. I went from a Dodge Caravan to the 2018 Tiguan and it feels like a Ferrari to me. It’s all relative.
I drove a 2010 Dodge Charger sxt with more hp than this Tiguan and when I tested the Tiguan SEL premium it took off better than my car on normal and sport mode. Eco mode made it sluggish but I really don’t care about losing 2 miles per gallon.
Besides as mentioned before, you are buying a crossover not a sports car. If you want more horsepower with the same premium interior then go ahead and pay $45k+
SoundgardenMan Thank You! Everybody Act Like SUVs Gotta Be The Jeep Trackhawk Now smh
We picked ours up on Wednesday and are really enjoying it.
No, it doesn't look like a space ship and we are fine with with that.
We have moved up from an Elantra. So much interior room. Plenty of soft materials to touch. It all feels quality.
1st gear does lag for a sec. Then the turbo kicks in and does a nice job.
The new Santa Fe we test drove was way worse off the start and stopping speed/distance was an issue. It felt like you were trying to stop a truck.
Exactly same experience..i test drove the new 2019 santa fe non turbo..and feels like a bus ..then if you go to the turbo 2.0 version santa fe 2019,the price sky rocket..
I'm really liking this car. Seriously considering getting this fully loaded in habanero orange. Beautiful car with Level 2 (maybe "Level 2.5") autonomous driving, which is awesome. There may be better SUVs in this class, but I love German cars and I love that orange.
with the LED daytime running lights, they should have done a similar layout to what they did with the 2017 Jetta. they make that car look so much different and definitely makes the mk6.5 Jetta look like a 2017 instead of looking like the 2011 model.. LED DRL's similar to that design would have looked great on this tiguan.
Looks good
Thanks for a good review and not just repeating corporate bullet points. We thought we wanted the new Tiguan when I sold my TDI back to VW(hate I 'had' to do that), and were expecting the Tiguan last fall. I saw the handwriting on the wall in the summer of last year and we got the Ford Edge. Really a very nice vehicle but we miss that VW feel. When the TDI returns we'll consider another VW. Until then...
It's very nice. ...but they could have the powerful and smooth V6 as an option for their customers. I'm sure many would love to get that.
John Grytbakk
We have the Atlas, and could not really notice any difference between 6 and the 4 turbo after testing it with our family of 5 plus the sales guy. We saved $2k in the process going with the 4 turbo and still love it.
Can this really be called compact if its a nearly a foot bigger than the previous model?
Anyone else notice the check engine light
hello Cargurus or anyone. Shopping this car and am looking for answer to this...
Is there any difference in ride height between the models/trims? I see many different wheel size options, but are they changing the tire size to match so they all sit the same?
I want as much ground clearance as possible on mine. Thanks to anyone who knows.
I test drove the Tiguan this weekend. Very sluggish acceleration. Everything else is great but I just do not like the look of it at all.
Ok so I'm loving my new Tiguan, I got the SE in white with the pan-sunroof. I have noticed the low gears struggle and it sorta sounds like a diesel...My husband calls it my lawnmower 😑 Anyway, I love the look of her, I debadged first day. Lol. Looks really clean though. I am really hoping she'll break in and get that pick up I was used to in my Bug. Am I asking for too much?
Did it finally break in?
Wish it came standard with the regular 2.0T 200hp+ engine with a DSG transmission. A vr6 would also be a nice option.
Even if it had more power the torque would most likely remain the same (or similar) so it wouldn't make much difference in daily driving. DSG shifts faster under acceleration but it is not as smooth as this 8-speed. VR6 option would be nice, i agree.
Quagmire88 my 2015 has it 😁
DSG also costs much more to maintain. Oil changes every 40k miles.
Waiting for R Line...
If you want power, but a Challenger Redeye.
Put I V6 and it will be perfect I test drive en is lack of power it is to big and to heavy for a 4 cylinder
I wish i can got one under $16k . I wish their was a diesel
At 1:48 don’t use the term “simplistic” to compliment something just because it sounds better... That word is the pejorative sense of the word “simple” and insults the design. “Simple” is the proper term to describe something elegant or a streamlined arrangement in a car.
I test drove it. I am stuck. CX5 or Tiguan. Hard to believe they are nearly the same size. Tiguan is winning I think. Barely.
Any suggestions ??? Hints. LoL
I'd go with the Tiguan, it also comes with a better warranty, 6 years/72k miles bumper to bumper
mercguy658 Yeah I seen that. Leaning VW it seems to be just sturdier and bigger. Even thou they are nearly the same. LoL. Thanks for input. Warranty is a huge plus. And it's a real bumper to bumper.
Mazda all the way unless you're brain dead.
A Google User I really am stuck. LoL. Back and fourth. Mazda is so much nicer inside til you look at the informtainment center. Garbage.... I hate it. Since it runs nearly everything that's like the one key point I just can't get over.
The VW is slow.. Really really slow but I can get over that it isn't like dead slow and it rides so smooth. And the infotainment system is the best of the 9 cars I test drove.
I am in the same boat and have been considering either CX5 GT or Tiguan Highline. Tiguan is more sluggish, but not too much, has a great digital cockpit and a very nice infotainment center. CX5 seems to have more power, is quieter, the inside is much nicer, has a great heads-up display, but the front-end of the new generation is not one that I like much. The size specs are similar, except Tiguan is about 6in longer and about 2in higher. There is a price difference as well. Struggling with the choice...
I hate car gurus a guy tried to bait and switch on me. So unprofessional and just because I’m a woman that doesn’t mean I don’t know anything. My father is a mechanic. Will never buy from car gurus
Disappointing fuel economy numbers. Look at the competition.
Not a very good review. I just bought a 2018 Tiguan SE. I knew what it was (power wise) going in. I actually really like the way it performs. Great car, so far.
vw needs to catch up, it's hybrid time.
To bad it does not have 1.4 motor that way it could get serious mpg numbers if your off go pedal
You didn't even bother to mention the Tiguan Limited Edition, boo!
This is too big for a 2.0 liter engine....almost every VW uses a 2.0.
buildmorefarms100 torque will do
He says Tiguan very different from how Volkswagen says it in their commercials. I pronounce it like VW - tig-wahn not teee-gwahn. How do you pronounce it? 🤔
William Rutkowski I live in Germany and the correct pronouncing is; Tiguan, as he said it
Here is teh correct pronunciation for all cars:
watch?v=7rN7rcv9KAQ
:)
lol it is like a short tee and then you have to pronounce more the u like wuan so Tee-wuan
I pronounce it sophie
That mini van comment has me not too confident in your (or your writers) ability to review vehicles. Did you think that was going to go over well?
Ford Flex?
This guy uses Apple maps....🤣
the design looks so dated!!! :(
I feel like I'm the only one that notices the substantial difference in quality between European-built VWs v. those built in the Americas. If the VIN doesn't start with a "W," you're missing the point of buying a VW. And I agree, just a minivan in disguise.
Austin Quirk This is untrue. Same exact parts. Just assembled in a VW factory in Mexico, run by Germans, because taxes on importing assembled cars from Europe to the US are sky high. They avoid those taxes by shipping the parts to Mexico, assembling the cars there, and importing the cars from Mexico into the US. Same exact parts, put together by VW employees with the same training using the same tools as in Germany.
@@DennisLeeflang This Tiquan is my second Mexican built VW. I had a German built Golf TDI and a Mexican built Jetta and they were the two best built cars I've owned. I had both for over 150k miles which is unusual for me since I usually lease and return. Mexican built is aok.
