Test drove both on the same roads. Tiguan has by far better steering and handling, almost car like. RAV4 handled like a truck. I was far less confident on the RAV4 and constantly kept trying to correct steering input because suspension in fast corners just would not settle. Also RAV4 transmission liked to downshift too much. Good review ! I drove the Tiguan as a ZipCar for a while. It was probably a base level car but it had good ride and nice interior quality, what I really didn't like was the engine/transmission. It felt so sluggish, not even slow but just unresponsive. If it had a better engine/transmission like the EU specs it would be so much more desirable. CX-5 is still the king for now.
Good review. would of been better to compare the top trim Rav4 since you had the top trim Tiguan. Rav4 in Limited trim looks drastically different inside and out.
@@chernowitz Choosing the RAV-4 over the Tiguan is a good financial decisions. Because if you are buying anything in this class, mind as well is reliable, but if you want something more exciting get a luxury SUV then.
Volkswagen always makes faultless ergonomics, you can never complain about their quality, handling, comfort, and practicality, while Toyota makes the most reliable vehicles in the world and some of the most fuel efficient. I would take the Tiguan in a heartbeat.
I’ve had the 2019 Tiguan for 2 years now and I can say no problems at all. And the power is good I don’t think it’s slow whatsoever. It’s very reliable.
@@ic_gaming849 lol 2 years, try keeping it for over 10 years. I have a beater 2011 rav4 which I bought for 4k with 100k miles, it now has 180k and have just replaced a hub bearing, spark plugs, and new oem ignition coils. Has never had a check engine light on, still going strong, it’s the base silver trim. Replaced the stock muffler with a turbo muffler to give it some deep sound.
Instagram fans picked the Toyota due to its much higher reliability rating. The Tiguan (a portmanteau), on the other hand, is in a higher class than the Rav4, and was actually introduced as a fully capable off-road compact SUV. Arguable, the most capable in its class. It came with a skid plate and more off-road tuning. That earlier version however, was discontinued due to lack of interest in North American. As for the crease, it is a styling cue to give the car a little less height, so it doesn't look like the side of a barn. Fit an finish and interior is a specialty of the VW Group they are the best in the industry. As for the car being similar I'm not sure how. Perhaps if you drove the cars more aggressively or pushed them closer to their limits (think autobahn), the difference would become more prominent. How confident would you be in the Rav4 at 110mph? Also, the VW has the more refined -- near luxury -- interior. Even the plastic is a better grade. The Rav4 makes no pretense about its purely utilitarian nature -- orange rubber? Anyway, the third-row seating in the VW is perfect for an additional pair of small kids.
Really well done. The format and presentation is very informative and engaging. Very enjoyable to watch and very informative. Great vibe. Next time I shop cars, I'll definitely search your content first.
What is nice about the VW is that it looks like a more premium product rolling down the street. You also don’t see as many on the road so they stand out more vs the sea of RAV4s. I own both an new VW atlas and a Toyota 4Runner. Both great vehicles with completely different missions. I took a leap of faith with VW but with the warranty and how we keep our cars about 7-8 years it should provide a trouble free experience.
All I see are Tiguans with their yellow old fashioned non-LED lights. I barely see any of the new RAV4's. Tiguans are selling at $4000 discount because nobody wants old fashion styling and the front end looks ugly to me.
To the English guy (excuse me for not knowing his/your name, I was only recently introduced to this channel) : your pronunciation of Volkswagen is really good. Only remark would be that the V is pronounced as the English f (as in fire)
Having driven both, I think the Tiguan handles more sportily (outside of snowy circumstances), has better refinement, and looks better to me. However, I would take the Rav - the handling is decent, the interior is classy enough for my liking, and the Hybrid option means I could drive to work and use near to no fuel. Saving money on fuel and servicing costs means I get to spend the rest on a fun second-hand car weekender/track car (E36 coupe, MX5, 86). Win-win to me, surprised you guys didn't think of that!
Tiguan definitely!!!!! Much more premium and nicer. More torque. More classy.. Q5-esque... More features.. Oh yes!! 1. Tiguan 2. Honda CRV 3. CX 5 or Rav 4
@@Didi78180x yes, I agree but all gas models Rav4s since 2014 are equipped either with a CVT or a manual for the European market. You can choose a diesel one which has a 6speed auto and the Hybrid with eCVT. I was referring to the gas models equipped with a CVT. I know a few people that one such vehicles and they still run like new. They told me to change the transmission fluid every 35-50k miles to keep the trans fresh.
I love both cars but ended up with the RAV4 w/AWD. The gas mileage is phenomenal, reliability is top notch and the high resale value just did it for me.
I love what Toyota is doing with there vehicles these days. They are finally putting style and passion in its lineup AGAIN. There are far more Toyota models I would consider driving today than just four five years ago. Tiguan for me... However, in the back of my mind, I'm thinking about reliability... I'm thinking about maintenance cost... I believe Tiguan's made in Mexico and the transmission is from Japan... Not sure about the engine... Hungary?.. Toyota's RAV4 is fine... It's a Toyota... It's probably going to be more reliable than the Tiguan... However, the interior of the Toyota is not going to be the reason why I'd buy it... I'll look into the Mazda CX-5 and the Honda Passport too... Nice review... Thanks!..
I picked my Tiguan up a few days ago, before that I had the kuga, and I’m shocked at how much more powerful the kuga was. I’m struggling to get used to the slow pull away speed at roundabouts. Nice car in every other way though.
If all one cares about is reliability and getting from A to B Toyotas are the way to go, no argument. Granted, you pay the Asian car tax: ugly and ages even worse, total bore to drive, outdated tech/transmissions/engines, less refined. My 2016 GTI has been going strong without issues and is a joy to drive, sit in and look at. Would have been depressing to drive a Corolla all along.
Love my '19 Tiguan...owned now for five months and trouble free...( SEL Premium, 4 Motion AWD 60,000 miles ) Just had the oil change service, rear end alignment, filter replacement, tire rotation, and inspection. Will be back in the shop in two weeks for a front brake service. Roomy interior, smooth ride, good power, handling, and gas mileage.
Love the video. I bought a 19 RAV4 but I really liked the Tiguan as well. I found the VW was more of a drivers vehicle, but, I was not buying a small SUV for ripping around speed racer style. I don’t think you can go wrong with either of these SUVs :)
Something to note about the Tiggy- Eco/comfort mode really dulls the throttle. Sport mode feels much better for power delivery. Honestly, for the average joe, the power is good. For Auto Journalists who drive BMWs and Alfa's a bunch, it feels slow, but thats a matter of perspective.
Great review guys. First time here but I just subscribed. You guys kinda remind me of Yuri and Jakob, (shot out to the Straight Pipes) but in your own unique way. Keep up the good work guys.
Good review. One thing I look at when I have two similar vehicles is the number of dealerships for a brand. I had to decide between a BMW X3 and a RAV4 XLE Hybrid. At the BMW dealership I came within a whisker of signing the papers when I said, "hey when I am on the road (being retired I take trips) how easy will it be to find a BMW dealership if I have a problem-pretty difficult. But if I am in a Toyota, it is easy. Easy choice for me, the RAV4. PS: di you know thr RAV4 gives you a full size spare and the BMW a "CAN" 45,000 dollars and they give you a can!
It may be a fantastic car until the Bi-TDI breaks.. That engine is the most unreliable engine VW developed in the last decade.. It's so bad, that even VW-salesmen advice to chose another engine. My brother in law is the executive director of a VW commercial vehicles brand-dealership. He forbid his employees to order demo-cars with the Bi-TDI-engine because he doesn't want the drama when the engine breaks.
Tiguan for sure. Tuning capability, German Engineering, and just looks Business/classy. Nothing bad about the Rav 4 really but if it were me I’d rather take a girl out on a date in a Tiguan R Line than a Toyota Rav 4 lol.
@René oo People who buy Toyota's! Plus, you can save even more money because you can pass it down to your kids, knowing they will be in a safe and reliable car.
You missed the best part of VW. It by far has the best handling than any other car. And RAV4 has the worst interiors which makes its look like an alien spaceship.VW is super polished and looks executive style. I dont like the shape of RAV4, inside and outside. Toyota just sells because it runs for years. Nothing else is good about it. VW anyday. Thanks for the video. Also, we drive for half year in non-wintery conditions, with no snow. VW again beats all competition in this aspect, its a beautiful car to drive in summers too.
@@sneakersonfeet9045 no it’s not since almost all cars are reliable for the first 5-6 years and most people that buy new don’t keep them for more than that. What about performance, handling, tech, interior design, exterior design, practicality etc.?
Bought a Tig R line for my wife. (I own a '16 Golf R) Why VW couldn't just drop the GTI 2L and a DSG in here is beyond me. She loves the celiac mode though 😋
I have one in Australia. Its got the Golf GTI's 162TSI engine and 7 Speed DSG with 4motion. Also its made in Autostadt, Wolfsberg, Germany not in Mexico. It costs the same as an Audi Q5 (entry level), but we have better screen (9.2 inch vs 8 inch in North America) and slightly better interior(better plastics + Nappa Leather).
That's not their demographic. Besides, if you now VW history they've tried that many times and those cars don't sell. That puts them too close to the more premium brands including its own Audi. How many Golf Rs do you see driving around?
why would you pick a vehicle in which you can't see the display? Which one has the better lights? I wish all car reviews would put more emphasis on that...
The reason they are not doing that is probably because it is highly regulated how the lights of a car are supposed to be. Its like saying which has the better brake

i own a 2018 tiguan sel premium and i use all seasons in the snow and the awd is a beauty! if i slip by a few centimeters, i get put back on track immediately.
Why does the North America Tiguan have the lowly base 184 hp and no GTI 228 hp like the International Tiguan version?
Good review ! I drove the Tiguan as a ZipCar for a while. It was probably a base level car but it had good ride and nice interior quality, what I really didn't like was the engine/transmission. It felt so sluggish, not even slow but just unresponsive. If it had a better engine/transmission like the EU specs it would be so much more desirable. CX-5 is still the king for now.
Good review. would of been better to compare the top trim Rav4 since you had the top trim Tiguan. Rav4 in Limited trim looks drastically different inside and out.
I think the Toyota is a better choice.
better quality
The Toyota is good, but if looks and feels like a utility vehicle. I'd get the Tiguan, it drives better and it feels more premium.
@@eddgrs9193 Buy a Tiguan if you don't care how much time it spends in the shop. P.S. Plus, the resale value is pretty bad.
If you like an appliance not an SUV than yes Toyota is the better choice. And you get lots of plastic plastic trim. Not to mention the hideous design
@@chernowitz
Choosing the RAV-4 over the Tiguan is a good financial decisions.
Good luck! You will need it (that comes from a german. So trust me)
@@VampirusX the new one is pretty reliable
New rav in that trim... dayyyyyyyyum! Looks like a mini 4 runner. Love the tig as well. I still own a 2018 Tig
The RAV4 suspension is stiff, but it handles high loads without a problem.
I personally enjoy the firmer suspension, but it's of course, personal preference
Tiguan is the most beautiful compact suv out rn !!
I hope they put more HP in the 2021 model. Would love to see over 200 HP AWD. Really thinking of getting a Tiguan next year over the Forester.
Are mazdas non existent to you? Lol
Mila babe16 i never owned a Mazda just Toyota or Subaru. Have you had good experiences with Mazda?
Really well done. The format and presentation is very informative and engaging. Very enjoyable to watch and very informative. Great vibe. Next time I shop cars, I'll definitely search your content first.
What is nice about the VW is that it looks like a more premium product rolling down the street. You also don’t see as many on the road so they stand out more vs the sea of RAV4s. I own both an new VW atlas and a Toyota 4Runner. Both great vehicles with completely different missions. I took a leap of faith with VW but with the warranty and how we keep our cars about 7-8 years it should provide a trouble free experience.
I see plenty of Tiguan and atlas’s now
I have not seen the 2019 RAV4 on the road yet. I do see a lot of Volkswagen Tiguans.
All I see are Tiguans with their yellow old fashioned non-LED lights. I barely see any of the new RAV4's. Tiguans are selling at $4000 discount because nobody wants old fashion styling and the front end looks ugly to me.
How long did you own the Atlas before it wouldn't start?
To the English guy (excuse me for not knowing his/your name, I was only recently introduced to this channel) : your pronunciation of Volkswagen is really good. Only remark would be that the V is pronounced as the English f (as in fire)
Yay! Thank you.
It's the first time Rav4 looks actually good!
It's actually the all-time low for rav 4 (pretty much like it always was)
It looks a littbit better than last gen
Oh yes!!
1. Tiguan
2. Honda CRV
3. CX 5 or Rav 4
Crv cant offroad as good as tiguan. Youd pay so much for a honda but still with awful!!! lacklustre plastics
Even the CVT Rav4s in Europe are all still on the road. The AWD system is glorious. It does miracle's if you give it a chance. Solid build vehicle.
CVTs are not well-perceived in Europe.
It appears that finally Toyota is putting some real value into inspiring design from the top all the way to the bottom of the fleet. The luster has returned and I am excited about the future of the industry.
Ok, don't tell anyone, just one small tip: Go to APR tuning and get Stage 1. It would boost Tiguan from 184 HP to 295 HP ;-) Just pay $1000.
Does it void the warranty?
@@triggerxx9760 Yes, it does not, maybe.
You guys ahave the coolest reviews out there with out a doubt. I never comment on anything but I have to comment because you guys are killing it with the extra humor and roll playing at the beginning of some videos or throughout the video. The videos are informative in every way. Your reviews are what really helped me decide about my next car wich I am purchasing a BMW M2 in February!Keep up the good work!!!!
till the moment i subbed to you guys i was a hardcore automobile fan but everything changed the moment you(fire nation) started your intro series. now i find myself just not caring about rest of the video and cars in it, i just want to admire/appreciate the intro more and all those thoughs you put in it, brainstorming process, creating process, recording... etc... everytime i watch one of these i just want to hug your brains :P and maybe pinch your cheeks too ?
THESE CHEEKS. ARE NOT. FOR PINCHING.
@@jamesengelsman9369 but, but, but your smile tells different story :) after every intro i just feel like i need to show my genuine feelings/love to you guys in some way and i dont know a better way than a hug :P pinching is just emphasis on your cuteness as a pretty well working duo:P
I have this model Tiguan!! If it's too slow for you, get the APR stage 1 tune. Game changing.
VW by far....and I tested both....
Looking at new cars and the tiguan is definitely on my short list.
Thanks!..
I have a Tiguan and I love it! Tiguan from here on out!
I picked my Tiguan up a few days ago, before that I had the kuga, and I’m shocked at how much more powerful the kuga was. I’m struggling to get used to the slow pull away speed at roundabouts. Nice car in every other way though.
If you were the too tune it the the same power as the gti it would be allot better
This is old, but man that intro was out of a blockbuster !
This is a classic fight: better in bed vs faithful wife
summed up perfectly
Brodi Wheeler especially in the Hybrid form, which is faster and delivers 100% of torque at 1rpm.
Wtf is a faithful wife?
not an equal fight at all, volkswagens are total shitboxes whilst toyotas are cheap to own and extremely reliable
The vehicles are nice and all but the colour grading is on point.
Got the RAV4 hybrid XLE for 31.5k otd. Pretty happy with purchase so far
有什么优惠么?在加拿大么
PS: di you know thr RAV4 gives you a full size spare and the BMW a "CAN" 45,000 dollars and they give you a can!
in a lot of markets you can get the tiguan with a 500NM of torque bitdi engine, it's a fantastic car then
It may be a fantastic car until the Bi-TDI breaks..
@@BFD15i The transporter/caravan uses a different bitdi engine. i haven't heard of any problems with the tiguan/passat 240hp version
@@Mickeysternum245 Ok. I thought that it's the same engine, just with a different tune.

I subscribed because of the amazing intros and video content. 👍🏾
The intro was so funny😂😂👌
Tiguan for sure. Tuning capability, German Engineering, and just looks Business/classy. Nothing bad about the Rav 4 really but if it were me I’d rather take a girl out on a date in a Tiguan R Line than a Toyota Rav 4 lol.
Tiguan will age much better in terms of styling. Both interior and exterior.
SeductiveYeti congratulations with your Tiguan
but will age worse in terms of reliability and therefore long term economy
@@Flysohigh18 who is planning on keeping a car for more than10 years??
@René oo People who buy Toyota's! Plus, you can save even more money because you can pass it down to your kids, knowing they will be in a safe and reliable car.
And much worse in terms of depreciation
Hey - I think the new 2022-2024 Tiguan deserves a review on your channel! Cheers
The Tiguan, especially in that color, looks really nice.
You mean the golf!!!
You guys didn’t mentioned any thing about Gaz Milage compared and hybrid options .. but other then that great fun video
I'm actually thinking of buying a rav4 myself
This review brought us to change our mind about the rav 4 and to purchase the Rline sel 4motion

Great Review I have a 2018 Tiguan and Love it
RAV 4 All Day! Would wait for Canadian models to get the panoramic roof though...
Like my 06 rav 4
You missed the best part of VW. It by far has the best handling than any other car. And RAV4 has the worst interiors which makes its look like an alien spaceship.VW is super polished and looks executive style. I dont like the shape of RAV4, inside and outside. Toyota just sells because it runs for years. Nothing else is good about it. VW anyday. Thanks for the video.
Also, we drive for half year in non-wintery conditions, with no snow. VW again beats all competition in this aspect, its a beautiful car to drive in summers too.
I'd get the Rav4 on the reliability alone. That thing will last 20 years if you want it to. Also I'm digging the tacoma front end styling.
But if you don’t care about reliability the VW is better in every way.
@@kristians2704kind of an oxymoron, Reliable in the end is the most important thing!
@@sneakersonfeet9045 no it’s not since almost all cars are reliable for the first 5-6 years and most people that buy new don’t keep them for more than that. What about performance, handling, tech, interior design, exterior design, practicality etc.?
I bought Tiguan TDI 4 Motion last month I love it
The Tiguan looks just like the Audi but 15K cheaper
I like Tiguan.
I see you guys were at the RC Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto during your intro. Amazing views there!
Bought a Tig R line for my wife. (I own a '16 Golf R) Why VW couldn't just drop the GTI 2L and a DSG in here is beyond me. She loves the celiac mode though 😋
Why? Because econazis.
How’s the R doing for you?
@@チャーリーブラウン-w8l Absolutely love it. Best daily driver I've owned to date. It's going on 3 years and only issue I had was a leaky water pump.
That's not their demographic. Besides, if you now VW history they've tried that many times and those cars don't sell. That puts them too close to the more premium brands including its own Audi. How many Golf Rs do you see driving around?
why would you pick a vehicle in which you can't see the display? Which one has the better lights? I wish all car reviews would put more emphasis
on that...
The reason they are not doing that is probably because it is highly regulated how the lights of a car are supposed to be.
Its like saying which has the better brake
IIHS rates headlights. Check out their website for that information.
