Dinah Washington... one of the greatest female singers of all time.
Dinah Washington won a Grammy with this song and that is when Grammy's meant something!!!!!!!!!
Perfect diction, perfect breath control, perfect pitch, perfect phrasing - what an artist she was.
So beautifully worded, I can't really add anything. Yes, perfect. She was an astonishing talent.
This song is simply PHEMNOMINAL! Feel in love with it the first time I heard it, years and years ago.
I love Dinah (pronounced Die nah) Washington. She also recorded some great duets with Brook Benton, "Baby You've Got What It Takes" and "That's A Rockin' Good Way to Mess Around and Fall in Love". She died of a barbiturate overdose in 1963.
Thanks for correcting their pronunciation
Perhaps they think she is prehistoric...tsk...tsk...tsk!
@ Joey Robison Yes, Dinah and Brook, were fantastic! Solo, and together. Such wonderful voice, and talent. I was 8 when the world lost Dinah. A Rainy Night in Georgia, by Brook, is one of my all time favorites.
A similar theme is in the song, “A Perfect Day”, a hit song by the first woman, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, to make a living as a songwriter, beautifully rendered by Paul Robeson in this recording:
ua-cam.com/video/47M9cNYbA8w/v-deo.html
You can definitely go down rabbit holes with both Robeson and Jacobs-Bond.
I actually saw Brook perform in a club in Liverpool, England in the '70's he was fabulous.
Dinah Washington was an American singer & pianist from the 40's-60's. She covered many genres including jazz, blues, R&B, & traditional pop music. She had a lot of great songs such as "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Am I Asking Too Much", "Baby Get Lost", "I Wanna Be Loved", "Cold, Cold Heart", "Unforgettable", and then two highly successful duets in 1960 with Brook Benton, "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)"& "A Rockin' Good Way (To Mess Around & Fall in Love)". Her last big hit was "September in the Rain" in 1961
"I left my heart in San Francisco" too.
One of the Greatest Singers ever. The Best. 💞
The song, I'll take Manhattan."Brings Back Beautiful Memories.
Dinah Washington (die-nah) had a voice that would never be forgotten. She lives in our hearts.
Dinah Washington & Sarah Vaughn & Ella Fitzgerald are Treasures & thank heaven that they are still being discovered by our younger generations. So glad you are falling in love with these beautiful singers & I love your reactions - SO SPECIAL 😻🎶🥰☮️
Don't forget Nancy Wilson!!
Please don't forget Nina Simone absolutely Phenomenal 😊😅🎉😂❤
Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah’s version of “Cry Me A River” are phenomenal. Dinah had a huge influence on many singers including Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse.
I love her "September in the Rain"
My favorite. Her voice is magical.
Love the chemistry you two have. It's so obvious how much you mean to each other. It's beautiful to see.
Dinah Washington was a hero to Aretha Franklin and a major influence. My favorite song by her is Blue Gardenia.
Yes Dinah, (Die-nah) Beautiful song and lovely reacction!
I love Dinah Washington! So glad to see you guys reacting to her music. She has another song that I think you guys should react to By the name of This Bitter Earth ❤
Dinah sings a wonderful song with Brook Benton called Baby You Got What It Takes
One of my favorite songstresses!! A prodigious talent who was supremely confident in her gift declaring that she could sing anything handed to her and did. Everything she sings is great but the next essential to listen to is "This Bitter Earth". What a Difference....was a huge hit that moved her into mainstream success. She has a huge catalog of music to explore-These Foolish Things, Don't Explain, If I Were A Bell are very different songs that show her ability to perform both ballads and uptempo numbers effortlessly.
Her temperament apparently matched her talent, both titanic and she lived a fast life marrying at least seven times during her brief 39 years (she died from an accidental overdose). As others have mentioned her first name is pronounced Die-na. Glad you discovered her.
Ms. Dinah Washington has been in a few movies' back in the 40's. It was usually cameo performances where she is playing her piano and singing. I just love how bluesy she sings her song. She was awesome!
One of the all time greats!! If you love this you should also check out "Since I Met you Baby" by Ivory Joe Hunter, recorded in 1957, another beautiful song!! What A Difference A Day Made was recorded in 1959. By the way her name is pronounced Die-nah, not Dee-nah. Love you guys!!
Never apologize for talking about your special relationship. It is beautiful
Wow..Legendary..Cheers..🌲❤️🦘🇦🇺
Another great female singer was Della Reese and one of my favorite songs " Don't You Know". Awesome voice.💯👍👍❤️
A timeless classic
Dinah's just glorious. What can you say about a voice and phrasing like that? Pure magic.
So glad you are doing a reaction to dinah not many people have and her back catalogue is superb

For me Dinah is the Queen of all things...They used to call her "the lady who could sing the phone book"
Dinah is another music royal.
Her voice was one of a kind!
The queen of the Blues Left us to soon . A true diva✌️♥️
Mad about the boy by her is worth a listen
My favourite singer of all time, i'm not joking...i'm 42, i stole a record from my parents and fell in love...still have the record today! :) Dinah
You’re nobody till somebody loves you, mad about the boy, teach me tonight, we’ll take Manhattan, September in the rain - just a few great Dinah Washington songs! She’s the best :)
Oh how i love Dinah Washington!! So iconic pop/jazz singer.
i Think this is One of the most beautiful songs, Ive ever heard. What a Voice. Dinah Washington rest at Oak Cemetery in Alsip IL . R.I.P Dinah Thak you for sharing your voice to the world of jazz.
My dad was a big jazz head. When I was a kid I found some Dinah Washington albums. Some possibly on 78 rpm. That was back in the 1970s. My dad was into a lot of the jazz greats when he was young in the 1940s. Jazz is a great American musical form, African American in its origin. Very important music. She was massively talented.
💖💖💖💖 A beautiful song, it impressed me then, it impressed me now.
She has a dark strong voice witch i loved.
My all time favorite song!!! Love Dinah.
In tears listening to this its simply magnificent i love these two for there goodness too.
Great song, which was speeded up and sung by Esther Phillips as a disco type version - also well worth a reaction to compare
Great choice.
You MUST react to Dinah’s “Cry Me A River” next.
This lady and song will have you "Vibing." Floating off to another Universe.
PLease listen to Dinah's There Goes My Heart September in The Rain and her Duets with Brook Benton Baby You've Got What It Takes and That's A Rockin' Good Way
There's just something magical in this sound. It can really put you in a time you never lived in.
It's jazz and pop. It went to number the year it was released. I'm just getting into her catalog...she was something!!!
wow, simply wow. she takes me beyond rain, sun and even, oddly, love too, as i become aware of being aware ... forever ... . thank you shawn, mel and dinah, too. oh! and stanley adams and maria grever, the composers.
Hey Guys, Jazz ,yes Jazz. You guys have to react to Billie Holiday, yes Lady Day. You'll won't be disappointed. Oh, by the way I am hooked listening to the reactions you and Mel do. Again, the greatest.
Please give a listen to Betty Everett and Jerry Butler doing "Let it be Me" and Betty doing "the Shoop, Shoop Song.
What a wonderful song. She had a great voice.
Man, songs like this one puts me smack dab in the middle of an elegant and smokey jazz club in Harlem.
Shawn has a good point. The music of that generation "Had Class."
So many great songs by Dinah Washington ... But don't overlook her naughty numbers: Big, Long Slidin' Thing and Long John Blues. (Bette Miller did a great cover of Long John.)
Love this song🌹My momma used to listen to her🌹
Remember it well. Beautiful song. You 2 have really bringing back a lot of memories. Thank you
Another star of jazz singing!! Check out her version of Blue Skies.
Teach Me Tonight
You've Been A Good Old Wagon
A Handful Of Stars
That Old Feelin'
Dinah was one of the best. Clean and economical. She said exactly what needed to be said, using the musical space extremely well - never crowding anything into it that didn't need to be there.
Dinah has been my fav gal singer since 1960 after seeing her sing "All of me" in the Doc/Film "Jazz on a summers day" which i recommend to all those wanting to get into Jazz because other artists in it are the cream of 50"s icons of Jazz
they called her "The Queen" and with good reason. This is proof
Thank you guys for your great reactions. Love your show. Dinah Washington was a superb singer try her duo with Brooke Benton. this was recorded in the 1960s. I think you will like it.
Absolutely priceless💯 grew up on her music
❤️ She is one of my fave go-to's for mellow music. For fun, I suggest Long John. Just a lil song about her dentist! Naughty! ❤️U2
Her and Della Reese were class acts!!
There is sooooo much love between lovers because of this music!!! Men and women were celebrated and loved. That's why we loved so deeply in our day.
OH I LOVE THIS ONE!!! I haven't heard it in Decades!!! Thank you!
A classic...great song and artist...thanks for playing 👍
I am so so happy that you are checking out Dinah (like fine-a) Washington. She’s been a favorite for so many years❤️ she had a way to take a song right to the heart.
Watching your videos and seeing the joy that the music brings to your faces brings joy to me. Thank you for posting
god i love this song, classic is like home where i always go back to
IT simply does not get better than this, PERIOD !!!
Also, the powerful 'This Bitter Earth'!
You just heard the Queen of the Blues. She was a mentor to Aretha Franklin. You still need the hear Esther Phillips and by the way, she has a wonderful version of What a Difference a day makes, but my favorite is Home is where the hatred is. Another Great Lady was Nancy Wilson doing the song, How glad I am. Lena Horne, Bessie Smith, Peggy Lee and Billie Holiday, etc.
I absolutely loved your reactions. You can tell that listening to the words of this beautiful song had an effect on both of you. Great to see your wonderful reaction. This is one of my favorite songs by this artist. Keep the reactions coming.
Props to your subs they are sending you music that deserves to live on & props to you guys for sharing it & your reaction 🙂
I love this genre of music. It takes you to another place. 💜
I'm going to suggest again that you listen to Ella Fitzgerald doing Summertime (1968). It's a masterpiece.
Absolutely sublime
She was a buddy of mines step mother.
Her versions of destination moon and fly me to the moon are my favorite.
This is Jazz pure talent 👏love , love your reaction ♥ happy holiday season 🖤💚💛one love.
One reason I don’t mind being older is having heard singers like Dinah on the radio as a child.
Dinah is one of my all time favorites. One of the greatest jazz voices ever. Check out her “Slick Chick on the Mellow Side”. Dinah is pronounced as Dienah.
She was one of the best in her Era! I loved her.
‘Mad About the Boy’ is beautiful
Dinah Washington's What a Difference a Day Makes, and Etta James' At Last are the peak, the goat.
Excellent choice. Thank you. Y'all brought a tear out.
Dinah was the most popular black female singer of her generation..Her grandeur and bold talent made her the queen of the blues. She recorded many white pop hits for the black jukeboxes..This recording made her an international star and was recorded late in her career..She was a jazz headliner as well..Ella, Sarah, and Billie were the acknowledged greatest influence of their time, but few would deny that Dinah was even more popular on records and in person..
Another great song of hers is " Broken Hearted Melody "
I think you're thinking of Sarah Vaughn who did that song.
Love this woman. Give "I'll Close My Eyes" a listen.
Dinah also did great duets with Brook Benton in "Baby, You Got What It Takes", and "A Rockin' Good Way", both big hits. Dinah was a big lover of the big 3 Ella, Sarah, and Billie, but had her own style. Your heritage young sister and brother.
What a SINGER !!
Love Dinah! Glad you two have gotten around to her. One of my favorites is her version of September In The Rain.
This song was her biggest hit and had more of a popular feel to it. Check out another song by her: "Soulville". But she is is rooted in Blues/Jazz. Every song that she does is perfection! One of my favorites is: "Blue Skies" featuring band and arrangement from a very young Quincy Jones.
I love your reactions to these amazing legendary vocalist. However, her name is pronounce Die naa. Your reaction to Sarah Vaughn was amazing also you have to try some Nancy Wilson, Billie Holiday, Carmen McCray and many more to come.
Top jazz female artists all time: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington. You need to check out Sarah Vaughan. And while your at it, add Lea Solanga, who is simply the GOAT of broadway singers.
I can imagine Mel singing this. Are you our next Dinah Washington?
Bringing back old memories
Y'all are sincerely the most polite individuals I think I've seen on the tube so far. It also seems like y'all cooked, and if that's the case, me too y'all.
My favorite. Had no fucks to give. The best!
worth another view, love you guys.
This is called vocal light music, late 1950s style..! We call it the 6 hit because of that really iconic straight eight 6 taps going on in the background while she sings. The music theory in the 1950s was like the fourth dimension, half the chords they use aren't even on todays registry.
