The 1970 book by Neville Maxwell, "India's China War" makes a similar claim viz. that China offered Nehru a quid pro quo - recognition of Chinese suzerainty over Aksai Chin in exchange for recognition of Mc Mahon Line by China in the Eastern Sector. However, Nehru did not go along with the idea. Maxwell did not have the material that Mr. Bhasin has had access to, but China gave a hint that it was in agreement with Maxwell's view. Mr. Bhasin reinforces with solid documentation what was a hypothesis all along - that India's stand against China is bereft of logic, historical evidence or cartographic exactitude. Kudos to Mr. Bhasin for bringing this to the public domain.

Neville Maxwell blames Forward Policy for the war. He is dead wrong. This policy was instituted in November 1961, war started on October 20, 1962. By this time China had close to one hundred thousand troops in the Himalayas and heavy equipment which China could not have done in 11 months. India Brigadier John Dalvi was taken prisoner by the Chinese, his minders of the same rank told him the war was planned in 1959. Nehru's own colleagues who had no clue of military affairs were his worst enemies, they did not let him negotiate and blocked funds for arms purchase quoting principles of Gandhi who despite his non-violence was a hard core realist advising Col. LP Sen to fight in Kashmir as it was a just cause. Nehru's colleagues who were unrealistic were Rajaji, Kriplani, GB Pant, Morarji Desai, Rajendra Prasad who were not tuned into geopolitics and stopped Nehru from give and take.

@@ranjitbarot7858 it was India's forward position policies that triggered the war in 1962 and unfortunately the two countries could not settle the border dispute inspite of the war. China did offer to give up the claim on eastern sector in exchange for India accepting aksai Chin in the western sector which India did not even control which India did not accept. From a third-party perspective of a Malaysian, I don’t lean towards any side. but just hope that everyone can rationally face the historical facts and a responsible politician can try to draw a full-stop mark to history for the people. China was very generous toward India on the border issues because at the time in China's view both China and India were victims of the West imperialism. They should unite with each other against the West oppression. What surprised China was that India inherited the British colonism and tried to become new colonists. It was rumored that before Mao decided to counter Nehru's border incursion, he sat there for hours trying to understand why Nehru would try to take advantage of China and continue the British colonist path.

The background information between 1959 to 1962, is that China was suffering from famine and that both USSR and USA were hostile to China, while India enjoyed the support from both superpowers. Importantly, Mao was almost sidelined due to big leap policy in China. Nehru wanted to take advantage of China's weak position to achieve his territory gain with China. In essence, Nehru was over confident about and overestimated Indian strength vis-a-vis Chinese, or to say that Nehru under estimated Chinese will and strength.
Today India again becomes a favorite of USA and the West. Hope history will not repeat itself and that India not make the same mistake second time by overestimate its own strength and underestimate Chinese by being provocative in the border with China.

Having dealt with both Indians and Chinese, I think there is also a cultural element at play here. Indians tend to be overly confident of their own capabilities while Chinese tend to be modest and humble despite being extremely capable. Indians tend to give the good talk but the work itself generally doesn't really turn out to be as good as what they portray in speech whereas Chinese tend to not be as flowery with their speech but let their actions and results do the talking instead.

Once they talked and solved the border issues, conflicts between them were minimized and developments maximized. PM Modi said that China never trespass on Indian territory. The issue is always politics, which Mr Bhasin is not talking about. It was politics in 1950s and 1960s, and it is politics in 2020s which will not let this issue be settled.
Just get in the details of land swap with Bangladesh and you will understand what I am talking about. The BJP in opposition was calling it a sellout for UPA to do land swap with Bangladesh and in 2014 Modi did it as one of the first things as PM. Congress supported it while in opposition because it was the right thing to do even when India lost a lot of land. The question is why was BJP opposing it in opposition? Politics.

India and China are neighboring countries for thousand years, which won't change, both are huge and populous, there are no inherent threats against each other. China has never treated India as a rival or threat (b/c rationally it shouldn't be). It's ridiculous to keep the border issues going, it doesn't benefit anyone except for maybe the US exploiting it.

Very difficult to say why Nehru behaved in what clearly is "irrational" but the damage has been done to the country.
It becomes necessary for the Govt of the day to confirm all facts, bring it out in the public domain. Negotiations with China are a must, as the next step. And, as mentioned by Mr. Bhasin, if there is no evidence to support our claim on Aksai Chin, it is best to return it to China. Of course, negotiations will have to be comprehensive, as these should also include territory ceded to China by Pakistan in POK.

We did not manage to get that commitment from them. If, after they sign an agreement, violate the border, then that would be an outright aggression, which will be dealt with differently.
The current situation just leaves us in limbo. China cannot be called an aggressor because the border is not really demarcated.

I am not a fan of Karan Thapar because of what I consider as, his "blind hatred" towards Modi.
However, I have to admit that this was a very good interview and it takes some courage to point out Nehru's faults - even ~60 years after his passing.
I am not sure if Karan Thapar is trying to redeem his father who presided over the drubbing of India in the Indo-Chinese war of 1962 (General Pran Nath Thapar was the fourth Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. The Sino-Indian War was fought during his term, in which the Indian Army fared poorly. Thapar resigned during the last stages of the war, handing charge to Lt. Gen. J. N. Chaudhuri - FROM WIKIPEDIA)
Another interesting fact - General Pran Nath Thapar and in extension. Karan himself, are related to Nehru 🙂

Imagine you were in Nehru's position. Here is what the reality you were faced with for your newly independent country:
    1. A belligerent West Pakistan in her western boder.
    2. A hostile East Pakistan in her Eastern border.
    3. A rather antagonistic US as the main superpower on the planet.
    4. Widespread poverty, hunger, low per capita income, illiteracy to say the least.
    5. A near non-existence of industrial base.
    6. Secessionist forces threatening the very existence of India everywhere from the South to the East or North to the West.
    7. A suspicious Sri Lanka in the south ( Tamil issue).
    8. Innumerable other domestic and foreign issues.
Given the reality of existing circumstances, Nehru was ultra pragmatic in trying to earn the trust and goodwill of China ( recognition of Tibet as part of China etc.) rather than antagonise one more country in her periphery. The 1962 "surprise" was more of a result of power imbalance than any other factor.
For example, if India had deployed most of her limited forces to the Chinese sector, very possibly it could have invited aggression from the Pakistani ( Both the Western and Eastern sectors) side anytime. Had India possessed Nuclear or sufficient conventional deterrence back then, the chinese wouldn't have dared the misadventure.

It was China who consistently presented to India great offers to once and for all quash the border disputes. But even if one side is rational and reasonable, as long as the other party, in this case India, is behaving irrationally, nothing can be done. I believe China has always been willing to develop amicable relationship with India but it was India who painted China as the enemy all these years over reasons that the Indian government was the root cause of.

India-China border disputes boils down to the fact that the border terrain is rugged & the border line of demarkation unclear.
    Disputes could arise easily.
The solution is to harness modern technology to remap the

This revelation, if it is well-disseminated by the Indian media, could offer the Modi government an off-ramp he needs to improve the rapprochement with China. Perhaps, the wise Jaishankar has a hand in bringing this revelation to light. He knows India's prosperity lies not in a military alliance with the US but in win-win economic cooperation with China.

Another important point is Tibet. India wanted Tibet or as a buffer state. That's the reason India rejected Zhou's land swap offer in Delhi. How you think Dalai could easily cross into India? Why Tibetan regiment in Indian army?
Dispute is entirely India's own decision. Not British or the West.
