  • Few, if any, could have done a better job than Nehru but, yes, he stayed on for too long: Ramachandra Guha to Karan Thapar for The Wire.
    ...........................................
In an interview to discuss and assess Jawaharlal Nehru, both as prime minister and as an individual, on the 60th anniversary of his death (27th May 1964) one of the finest and most highly regarded historians of modern India has said Nehru “made mistakes, to be sure, but other people in his place would most likely have made bigger ones”, adding that there were very few people, if any, who could have done a better job than he did in the trying circumstances that Nehru faced. However, Ramachandra Guha adds that Nehru stayed on for too long as prime minister and it would have been better if he had - as at the time he himself considered - stepped down in 1958.
This 44-minute interview is a tour d’horizon that covers and discusses Jawaharlal Nehru’s achievements and failures, the challenges he faced, the goals he set himself as well as the personality of the man, including his relationship with Edwina Mountbatten and the role she played in his life. Mr. Guha says that despite the enormous challenges Nehru faced, the fact India became a credible democracy with freedoms of speech, worship, association, a credibly functioning Parliament, a free press and an independent judiciary is remarkable and the credit for this must be shared with the stalwarts that made up Nehru’s first-star studded cabinet.
The interview also discusses Nehru’s relationship with Sardar Patel and why Gandhi chose him rather than Patel as prime minister. It goes into depth about Nehru’s handling or rather mishandling of China and his failure to do more to push primary education. But, at the same time, the interview also discusses Nehru’s careful and successful handling of India’s minorities and, in particular, the sizeable Muslim population which was battered and shaken by partition, the economy, non-alignment and the building of IITs and IIMs.
Towards the end, the interview analyses why there has been such a sharp decline and fall in Nehru’s reputation since his death and whether the sins of his daughter, grandson, grand daughter-in-law and great grandson have been inflicted upon him.
If you want to understand Jawaharlal Nehru - and today, let’s be honest, few people know anything about him - this is one interview I suggest you make time to see and hear. In what can only be called a command performance, Ramachandra Guha has objectively, critically but also sympathetically, and with great balance and fairness, assessed Nehru both as prime minister and as an individual.
To help, I’ll give you a list of the questions which have been meticulously followed.
    Here they are:-
    1) Today is the 60th anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru’s death and I want to use the occasion to try and assess his prime ministership so that we have a better idea not just of his achievements and failures but also the challenges he faced and the goals he set himself as well as the personality of the man himself. Now in your essay ‘Verdicts on Nehru: The Rise and Fall of a Reputation’ you write: “It is safe to say that no modern politician had anywhere near as difficult a job as Jawaharlal Nehru. At Independence, the country he was asked to lead was faced with horrific problems … No new nation was ever born in less propitious circumstances.” Are you saying that in effect he started his prime ministership with his hands virtually tied behind his back?
    2) Why did Mahatma Gandhi chose Nehru rather than Patel as prime minister? What qualities did the former have which the latter may not have had?
    3) Against this background India became a credible democracy with freedoms of speech, worship, association, a credibly functioning Parliament, a free press and an independent judiciary. How much of that was because of the Constitution and how much of that was because Nehru was determined this should be the outcome?
    4) The economy in Nehru’s days was what’s called a mixed economy. The government set up steel plants, dams and much of heavy industry. No doubt that gave India an economic foundation it didn’t have but was he mistaken not to pursue the sort of export-led growth that took countries like Taiwan, Korea, Singapore to growths of 8, 9 and even 10%?
    5) One of the challenges Nehru inherited was a very sizeable Muslim population, battered and shaken by partition, uncertain and unsure of its position in India or even whether it belonged in the country. How effectively did he handle this? And today when he’s accused of appeasement is that fair or mistaken?

I remember 27th May 1964 , that hot summer Mid day.I was child of seven years..In those days in Village gram Panchayat, there used to be only one battery operated Radio set, some time working sometimes not.
My uncle came hopping, face terrified full of sorrow.
My grandfather, was sitting in the varanda, my uncle said in a voice I still memorize,"Pandit ji is no more."I remember my grandfather wept, family ladies, grandmother, came out.All had tears in the eyes.
I couldn't guess ,why these elders are shading their tears for a person who is,was never with us.Lives far off.
Grand father did not take his midday meal.
Now in sixty eight years life I fully got aware why my elder parents, other villagers mourned the demise of our first prime minister.
First was the best, current one is the worst.

This is indeed an illuminating interview on the different facets of our first Prime Minister. He is undoubtedly the architect of modern India. When India got independence, we had virtually nothing. Therefore, it was a daunting task to lay down the foundation for a modern country. Weighed against his many achievements, his shortcomings, as being projected by his critics especially the rightwing party, pale into insignificance. What most people overlook is that Nehruji was a statesman, who rubbed shoulders with the great personalities of the world. No Indian leader could claim that. His books are there for the posterity.

What we forget is that those days, we had accute shortage of resources and it was extremly difficult to set priorities. The first budget was merely 197 crores and we had accute shortage of healthcare, foodgrains, we required vaccines, schools, defence equipment, industries etc.

@rahuljadhav5599 population was 36 crores, but that makes things even worse since even the human resource is limited, especially when these 36 crores are also mostly uneducated.
And how is dollar cost relevant here. To put things in the right perspective, IIT Kharagapur was established in 1951 at a total budget of about 640 crores, whereas in 1947, the total budget of our country was 197 crores.

Indira was chosen several years after Nehru had died. Rajiv was appointed when Indira was lying dead, Sonia declined the PM post in 2004 and yet it’s commonly believed power was handed down personally by the elders to their progeny. The simple reality is the people are feudal, still are, and they choose in such a manner in feudal societies and this also explains why so many families across the country have had similar experiences past 70 years. But the story being spun so successfully of a dynasty benefits some, and the public don’t examine and educate themselves to arrive at their own conclusion, a feudal trait, but follow direction.

When India became independent very few realize India's Debt to GDP ratio was 247 %..the British had left India Bankrupt. Nehru brought India out of this huge crisis though there were mistakes made...today Indian governance is in gutters..

A Statesman! After 55 years of Congress rule and development, Infra building, Modi came to power everything in a plate comfortably. He then started to tax the people and served his Corporate friends. To cover all this he played Hindu-Muslim card and created hatred in the Society. Shame on the Corporates.

''today Indian governance is in gutters..''
India took more than sixty odd years to give bank accounts to its poor masses. Two third Indians did not have toilets until this decade. Governmnet resources were looted at such a way that only fifteen percent reached the poor. The present governmnet made many mistakes but the good ones must be admitted as well. This does not demean the giant contributions made by our first PM for the development of the country.

Nehru built a new India after the Independence 15th August 1948. He established the following things namely a) New Constitution brought in India b) All Major Dams in India c) IITs d) IIMs e) DRDO f) Automic Power g) ISRO h) SAILs i) AIMS j) Having very good International Relations with different countries k) Different Govt Institutions or Industries built by Nehru period. The successive Govt. should have built the rest of things and improved the quality of life of our Indians. It does improve our quality of life during the course of time and we improve on it instead of criticizing it previous Nehru period. We lack reasoning in our thought process and instead we need to improve on our Country's togetherness to build a better India to reach greater heights competing with rest of the progressed Countries in the world

Wonderful interview. Mr. Guha is a brilliant and very honest historian, this interview has some inaccuracies:
    1) Hungary - Nehru did not publicly condemn the USSR invasion of Hungary but when he visited US in November 1956 and was invited to President Eisenhower's Gettysburg estate for an overnight stay, he privately condemned USSR. This is recorded by Eisenhower.
2)Nehru truly believed in non-alignment which has paid handsome dividends to India but his talk of disarmament was to cover his tracks of the nuclear bomb he was building-source Bharat Karnad. There are other evidences which give a firm indication Nehru, if was alive, would have detonated India's first bomb by December 1964. Nehru died in May 1964. Why Indira Gandhi took so long is a different story for some other day.
3)The Patel letter Mr Guha referred to with regards to China is in big circulation, this letter is dated November 7, 1950 which has been widely quoted or misused in distorted context. Atul Bhardwaj of the University of London has clearly written this letter with other letters were part of ongoing dialogue and discussions going on within the Nehru administration about China and Tibet.
4)When China comes up, Tibet comes up. In 1949 Nehru wrote to General Cariappa to give him assessment of the Indian military to take on China vis a vis Tibet. Gen Cariappa's reply was in negative. Source Manoj Joshi- a well regarded journalist and security expert who has written these letters are in the Indian archives. To elaborate further, Nehru sought UK and US help, they said do anything short of military actions. Tibet was brought into India arbitrarily and unilaterally in 1914 when China was in turmoil, the way it was done was it did not pass even the basic smell test. China said they did not recognize the agreement made with a sham delegation of Chinese people. US and UK had acknowledged Tibet as an autonomous part of China - source Melvyn C Goldstein, Prof. Srinath Raghavan, CIA declassified documents. Nehru had no choice but to give up Tibet which experts have called an exercise in realism.
5)Nehru did not bring up border issues runs contrary to the documented material. In 1954 Nehru brought up the border issue, Chou assured Nehru that the Chinese maps showing Indian area inside China were faulty and would be corrected, Nehru went to the extent of saying how would China or Chou feel if Tibet was shown on the Indian side. Source-Nehru notes he turned in after his return from China visit in 1954.
6)In 1957 when Chou visited India he told Nehru the entire border was settled and everything south of Tibet and MacMahon line was permanent border meaning NEFA now in Arunachal Pradesh was an Indian territory. Then in 1959 he drew bombshell saying the entire border was up for negotiations. Source: Prof Srinath Raghavan's War and Peace in Modern India.
7)VK Menon- Nehru was not enamoured with Menon. From Paul McGarr of the King’s College, London: “Nehru was conscious of Menon's considerable faults, not least his unerring ability to infuriate Western and Indian politicians with his barbed tongue and congenital mendacity. After receiving one letter of complaint about Menon's machinations from his sister, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, Nehru responded: ‘I have known Krishna now for a long time and have a fairly good appreciation of his abilities, virtues and failings. All these are considerable. I do not know if it is possible by straight approach to lessen these failings. I have tried to do so and shall continue to try…. I am not swept away by Krishna. Krishna has often embarrassed me and put me in considerable difficulties’. Paul McGarr continues “Whenever Nehru found it expedient to downplay the importance of his relationship with Menon, notably during periods of acute Indo-American tension, he did so. In conversation with Escott Reid, Canada's high commissioner to India, Nehru disparaged the notion, which he conceded was prevalent in the West, that Menon enjoyed his ‘special confidence’. ‘Without saying anything derogatory about Menon,’ Reid reported, ‘Pandit Nehru stressed that this impression was quite mistaken’. Moreover, Nehru made it clear ‘that he would have no objection if the Canadians said something to the Americans on these lines”.
8)Nehru trusted China - this is inaccurate, Howard B Schafer, a US diplomat, in his biography of Chester Bowles, a two time US Ambassador to India, has written as early as 1951 Nehru had confided in Chester Bowels of his mistrust of China. Nehru also a letter to KK Chettur, Indian Ambassador to Burma in 1951, referring to China, that a country bent on territorial expansion cannot be trusted. "Glimpses into India", a compilation of letters to Indira Gandhi from prison, has one letter stating this sentence: “no scruple had ever troubled China in the pursuit of her imperial policy. She grabbed openly, not caring even to cover her designs with a veil. ‟
9)Kriplani - he was opposed to Nehru and was not a practical person. In 1959 when Nehru asked for Rs. 100 crores, Kriplani shot down the request saying it would violate the soul of the father of the nation. Rajaji too had similiar views, too long to exapand here.
10)Being aware of India's military disparity, not being able to purchase arms because of foreign exchange and money problems and not being able to build arms at home for the same reason, Nehru and Menon worked very hard to reach a compromise with China by engaging in give and take. China made more demands, Nehru's cabinet also pressured him not to make compromises. CIA declassified documents reveal neither US nor Nehru believe China would attack. Bruce Reidel and Bert Lintner have provided firm evidence the attack was planned as early as 1959.
    11) Nehru was a realist, not a dreamer as people claim. He did not get into UNSC seat trap which was a real trap by US to create a permanent wedge between US-USSR (China's backer for the UNSC seat) and India-China.
12)Nehru was building bomb and at the same time, took care of basic defense necessities, started and finished production of Maruth-24, India's first jet fighter, inducted navy ships Mysore, Delhi and several frigates in 1948, did best he could with limited sources.

To deify a fellow human, however great, is, IMO, unfair to all concerned; it presents an incomplete picture to the world, and burdens the honoree with unrealistic expectations from the public at large.
Dr. Guha has, therefore, done Panditji a great service with a fair & frank analysis of his character, achievements, and failures, demonstrating that greatness is inherent in humans despite individual flaws.
Kudos, Mr. Thapar, this interview is one of your best so far.🍀

Listening to these brilliant interviews, I always feel that they should be made available in regional languages. At least in three/four major languages

How much we miss now such noble hearted leaders who had no other goal or agenda except trying to build a strong nation where there is love and respect by the citizens towards the neighbor citizen without any discrimination and disrespect..
Our first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru whose smiling face depicting the calmness and affection towards his fellow men is deeply carved in our hearts and it can never be erased . He will be remembered forever…
Immensely thankful to the Anchor and the guest for the subject chosen and Making his 60th anniversary a memorable one

Thank you so much for bringing Guha into Wire for wonderful eye opener on the first prime minister. The thought process is really wonderful and eloquent. I would like to remind you that politicians and public still feels the assurance that imposition of Hindi would not be on the people who still accepts it until then ENGLISH will be continuing in the Southern States particularly my own Tamil Nadu. Yes as Guha said that Nehru was the charismatic leader amongst the South Indians particularly.
Thanks Kapar for bringing such wonderful interview in this occasion.
