This man Sabato Rodia left his legacy. How many of us can say the same? MAD RESPECT to him. and Long Live the Watts Towers.

Alicia Carr www.wattstowers.us/ is the site I built to honor him. And here some artists inspired by his work: www.wattstowers.us/homage/index.htm.
What part of Italy was he from, Alicia?
Magnificent struture! It's unbelievable the personal power and strength of Mr. Rodia. It's enlightening to read the comment below. Thank you Mr. Rodia, the community appreciates your work,
Some people (Hearst) brought castles, brick by brick, from the old world...while others, such as Sabado "Simon" Rodia, built his own cathedral in the new world, from memories and in the memory of the ones built in his native Italy! An magnificent vision and unique means of execution!
I agree
Great comment George Bost. It always did strike me as exactly that - a cathedral with twin spires. Echoing the Old World, yet intrinsically American. That he built it is a more impressive feat than merely transporting an already existing one from the Old World. Truly inspirational.

I am impress with Mr. Simon Rodia , creativity is with in people and we all express it in a different way. The Watts TOWERS that was built is an amazing piece of art.
certainly th WATTS TOWERS must rank as one of the very greatest works of sculpture ever produced in th USA
god bless SIMON RODIA
These towers represent heavenly structures representing each human soul born, a wondrous dazzling vision if you have been graced to see them. Many under construction, many finished, each indescribably detailed and unique. S.R. had this dream, or vision and spent his life constructing this sculpture from that inspiration.
Hope this will be there forever use to look at it every day from my bedroom window when i was around 12yrs old or so. Watts has so much great history behind it . . . Johnny !
This is so amazing you care nothing about money you only care about building something for his community and for the people so God bless him with that gif that so amazing to see someone so passionate bring things to life
And he wouldn't let anyone help, as 'he never knew what he was gonna do next himself'. 😊
Here's something that seems rather odd to me:
One of the most famous album covers of all time was The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. On that cover, top right corner, next to Bob Dylan, you will find ... THIS GUY ... Sabato "Simon" Rodia.
I just checked it out... NICE fun fact
I was just asking myself that, why?
Very good Rodia👏👏!, you have seen the Nola lilies and have not forgotten them😊!,hai visto i gigli di Nola e non li hai dimenticati😊!.Cheers Art in the World(ci rende migliori👏!!)🌏🌍🌎😊
My grandfather was friends with Sam and worked for the railroad after work he would stop at Sam's and help him build the Towers
I suppose that as a friend he helped for free. What was your grandfather's name?
What a great story! I had no idea of the origin of the famous Watts towers.
* HardCore Blue Collar Working CLASS Artist. Much Respects to Mr. RODIA .. 12/26/2021 ...
It's quite certain that he did it all by himself. There wouldn't have been any funds to employ others. It took him many years.
I never understood how Simon Rodia could have built the Towers all by himself. They are massive. He had to have had help which was never credited.
who else is here because their art teacher gave them a link?...just me?
People come and go here. Maybe a next art student will see your post.
THANK YOU !
@IDOLODORO2 I think so too. And Simon Rodia wasn't even trying to make art. he just did what he felt he had to do. Next to his creativity, he was a natural talent as far as construction in concerned. Be sure to visit wattstowers site.
Maybe you saw it already, but the site I built is wattstowersdotus. It tells some more about the towers.
It's like gothic cathedral spires.
It seems that this won't accept URL's. But it did in my primary post - strange.
During that time Watts was 68% mexican and 38% black..people thought he was mexican. Some people said he also spoke spanish.
Possibly he spoke Spanish. He was Italian.
They are. There's a lot on the web about the battle about this back in the fifties. Read more on latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2009/10/celebration-will-mark-50-years-since-rodias-watts-towers-won-a-tug-of-war-for-survival.html.
im antenate of simon im rodia
Could you please re-state that comment? What is "antenate"? What is simon "im" rodia? Are you trying to say that you are a relative of Simon Rodia? If so, it would be interesting to hear what you have to say about him.
Buckminster Fuller is a lunatic. I think he likes hearing himself talk, but doesn't believe 1/2 of what he says. He just fills the air with noise to delight himself.
Amen! some people are does like Mr Rodia while other are mere talkers.

It's all true; but does art need to be pretty?
Amazing. Looks like an illiterate Gaudì.
I wonder how structurally safe are they. Any opinions from an engineer or architect?
When the city wanted them demolished because they supposedly were structurally unsafe, a group of engineers brought in cranes and heavy weights and proved that the towers are, in fact, structurally very safe and won't be brought down by even the strongest winds.
@@samrodshenassa978 They're likely to be moved or demolished since it isn't an indigenous work of art.
The towers are not pretty, like other things in Los Angeles. I believe the only reason they let Mr. Rodia build (like a crazed man) was because he was doing so in the ghetto. If he would have bought land in Beverly Hills and started building, they would have cold stopped him and said it was against codes or something.
What's your point?
What's the point in stating the obvious?
AND !!!
The Towers are not "pretty"? Why settle for something so inane as "prettiness" when you can make something staggeringly beautiful and sublime, as Simon Rodia did?
sounds like someone from beverly hills...girl bye!!
