  • The idea with this video is to help potters who want to start your own journey with "Single Firing". I tell you 1 thing, you will LOVE it. First thing first:
    - you must have your own kiln
    - after you make your pieces, allow them to dry for 7 to 10 days
    - glaze them (yes raw glazing) be very CAREFUL, as they are super fragile
    - wait 1 day and put them in the kiln (I do cone 6 - midfire)
    - schedule or program is:
    RA 1 - 65 per hour
    Deg 1 - 400c
    hold 1 - 1 hour
    RA 2 - 110 per hour
    Deg 2 - 1100c
    hold 2 - 0
    RA 3 - 65 per hour
    Deg 3 - 1208c (or 1207 - you will have to use cones and test your own kiln here to find out the right temperature for you)
    hold 3 - 5 minutes
    RA 4 - 0
    Bungs IN at 600c, around 7 hours after your turn it on (I usually set my alarm as I don't want to have trouble with my kiln hehe)
    I Wait till the film temp is low then 100c to open the door a little bit and let it cool down completely before get the pieces out of it.
    I use mainly Mayo Glazes, apply them normally, 3 coats (allowing it to dry in between coats).
    Pleeeeese let me know if you have any questions.
    Deb

    Amazing for your first video, thank you! I've been single firing for a couple of years now. I find it easier and less stressful when the clay is leather hard. I don't use a special schedule but most of my pieces are not meant to be functional. It just makes sense!

    Thanks for this! To make a long story short..... After a gap of 12 years, I am again a student of ceramics. The studio owner always single fires and this is new for me. I am lucky to have some good pieces. I hand build everything so there is so much more to consider.

    I've never single fired and I am so excited to try it! I'm setting up my own studio at home and buying a single fire kiln. Is low fire clay good for this?

    • @DivineSoilPottery
      @DivineSoilPottery  4 місяці тому

      Yes low fire is the same thing that program the kiln and test the temperatures till you get the perfect for your art

    Hi, I’ve never done single firings before and I want to try it. Can you tell me if you fire up to 1208 degrees with all your clay types? I use porcelain and stoneware and I usually glaze fire to 1240 degrees. Can I reduce the temp by doing a single firing? Thanks, Lisa

    • @DivineSoilPottery
      @DivineSoilPottery  4 місяці тому

      I recommend you to use cones inside your kiln to check what they say (have you used cones before?) my program says 1.204 at the moment but the cone is in between 6 and 7. If the temperature sermos low on the thermostat but you pieces are looking great, no drama at all. Follow your gut and go for it

    This is super helpful thank you! Can you advise re testing please. I obviously don't want to fill a whole kiln of 'tests' during a single firing so I'm wondering whether to mainly fill the kiln with my standard glazed bisque ware that I'm used to firing. My only concern here is the firing cycle is so different than my usual glazed bisque ware that all those pieces might get ruined? Are you suggesting it's best to make enough different types of tests to fill a kiln specifically for single firing? Sorry for wordy question, I hope it makes sense?!

    • @DivineSoilPottery
      @DivineSoilPottery  4 місяці тому +1

      When I did my testing I put like 6 or more pieces that I wouldn’t mind if they turned out bad, but they actually turned out amazing.

    • @saffy8857
      @saffy8857 4 місяці тому

      @@DivineSoilPottery Thank you, that’s what o ended up doing. I slowed down my usual glaze firing cycle and put a handful of green ware pieces in with my other work. Turned out just fine! Both my glazed bisque ware and the green ware were almost the same! Game changer! Thank you 🙏🏽
