The Real Reason Aldi Cashiers Sit Behind The Register

- Aldi’s cashiers look pretty cozy sitting behind those chairs behind the register. But there's a more practical reason why the store lets their cashiers sit down - and it has nothing to do with comfort.

The fact that being allowed to sit instead of being forced to stand for hours on end is "an unusual tactic" in the US is crazy. Here in the UK it's essentially universally allowed for those working the tills to sit while doing so (at least in supermarkets).
You see, Americans want that their works are suffering while they work. Otherwise, it would not considered as work.
Sitting is associated with laziness.🇺🇸
My dad was the person who designed those checkouts, based upon requirements set forth by the Aldi Company. One of the things he did was to talk with the people using them to find out what he could do to increase comfort. One thing was to put the people on a platform so they would be off of the concrete/tile floor and fill that platform with foam insulation to help keep feet warm. He also put trim around the edges so the roller chairs bump into it and warn the checkout person that they are at the edge. He positioned the register so that it would be at a good height for most people. Representatives came from Germany and were quite impressed with his design. That was decades ago and it is still being used.
An ERGONOMIC genius! Thank you!
I wish all places did this! I work retail, and after 2 1/2 years of standing behind the register even with fatigue mats and restaurant-worker shoes with additional insoles added, I’m now undergoing physical therapy for lower back issues. I LOVE days when there are boxes of goodies to unpack and stock in the checkout area because of the bending, squatting, and stretching involved, and the replenishment team manager likes to save the shirts that need to be refilled and re-sorted for when I’m working because he knows how that kind of bending and stretching over the table helps keep my back more limber too. Between the therapy, at-home stretching exercises, and help like that at work, I’m improving, but first thing in the morning is still hell until I’ve been moving around for about an hour and slow days are pure torture!
Keith Weiss, please tell Dad Thanks!!!
Wish your dad could improve shoprite! 😀😀😀
Tyranny is still in use as well.
In Germany, where ALDI comes from, all cashiers sit, and (almost) all carts take a deposit coin (or chip). It's completely normal. Not just at ALDI --- everywhere.
Same in Spain, not just Aldi but every supermarket there. Also costumers need to wear plastic gloves (available at the entrances) to touch the produce.
Sure wish this had closed caption so I could know what the article is about.
Same in Michigan. I like Aldi
Yes they do
I lived in Italy in my teen years, this was back in 1976-1977 and some of the stores did it way back then.
I've travelled widely across Europe and lived in the UK, France, the Czech Republic and Russia. I've never come across a country where cashiers are NOT sitting down. Standing up at the cash desk is very much a USA thing.
Your wrong.. Cashiers in the UK (I'm British) they all sit down, same in France, Germany too, in the US the poor Cashiers don't. I now live in the US (Retired), as I said I should know (Lived and worked in the UK for 30 years, and all workers get mandatory 4 weeks off each year after 1 full year at your work place (sick pay too).. Nothing like that here in the US...
@@user-ui9pk8zv9o I think you might have misread the original comment.
@barry I work as a cashier in U.S and it hurts like hell! I absolutely am looking forward to move to Europe soon.
That's very true, Brazil everyone sits at the registers, it's cruel not being able to sit, I worked as a cashier before and stood for 9 hours, and when I got home my legs hurt so bad.
Lived in France Germany Sweden Ireland and Italy mostly sitting
Having barcodes on many sides of the product is a big help as well.
Only thing I wish they would "Fix" is more barcodes on their bottled water.
I worked checkouts at several different New World supermarkets and DEMANDED to be allowed a seat; I had half a disc removed when I was 23 to relieve my sciatica and standing in one place was sheer hell.
Cool story. U sound like a libtard
Walmart should have been fined for NOT complying with the ADA. If you had ANY injury or disability requiring you to sit, they had an obligation to offer you reasonable accommodations.
I truly appreciated this Mashed story. However, grocery store and other retailers are not moving toward 100% self-checkout in order to avoid giving cashiers chairs or stools. They are moving to 100% self checkout so that they don't have to pay cashiers at all!! They want to eliminate those expensive and difficult human beings. It makes for a much larger profit margin.
I am always sad to see elderly cashiers standing an entire shift. Actually, I'm sad that they must work into their golden years. 😢
There are a few elderly cashiers at the grocery store I work at. One had to miss work for several months due to a car accident she was in and when she came back she temporarily used a stool.
Well get used to it. Retirement will soon be a thing of the past as well as social security and medicare benefits.
I am from the Netherlands, and have never seen a cashier standing.
Just wait until you find out what the older women at ALDI do when they're not on the register. That easy peasy front end job is loaded with back end labor lmao
@@UndercoverNormieExactly!! One person doing the job of 4.
The latest Aldi thing here in their homeland (Germany) is the dual checkout: There are 2 bays after each checkout where the scanned produce is pushed to. While one customer is paying, the cashier is already scanning and forwarding the shopping for the next customer and pushing it into the second bay. Why? Because it eliminates the wait for payment. So each cashier is basically processing 2 customeres in parallel.
Latest?
Ths exists as long as i can think
@@buninparadise9476 I don't know where you are, but here in Rheinlandpfalz Germany, of the 2 local Aldis, only one has changed to the new system, and that only about 2 months ago. The cashiers are still constantly telling shoppers to move on to the end of their shopping channel, because they don't realise that the dual output cashier system means that they don't have to wait for the previous shopper to finish packing. I have shopped in a lot of Aldis around the country in the last 40 years, and it was certainly new to me!
@@buninparadise9476 They existed before, but not with two payment terminals. You always had to get payment before scanning the next customer. Now if they ask if you pay with card and if you say yes, they start scanning the next customer while you pay at your terminal. So they basically scan most of the time and at full speed. Which is probably more like 100 Items/Minute. Which speeds up everything a lot.
Bro. That has existed since before I was born and I'm 30
@@martinstent5339 this system exists in Italy at least since I was a child. I am now almost 45 years old
I don't see why every store doesn't let their cashiers sit..it's more efficient, less strainious, and it's nice to see the worker not miserable the entire time from standing in one spot for long periods of time. Walking and bending is better than standing, I'd rather unload trucks than stand in one spot all day.
Suffering is THE POINT.
Retail workers can't be seen to be human, that would be "unprofessional"
The beatings will continue until morale improves 👍
Most of the cashiers I’ve encountered at Aldi are crabby, I say if you don’t like your job then quit and don’t bring your probs to work period
@@arthurnevarez7614 Interesting take... How long have you been completely out of touch?
ASDA , TESCO AND SUNBURY ALL DO IN THE UK but they aren't thin women lol
In a lor of stores, the cashiers are not just cashiers, but store employees that share other jobs in the stores, such as stocking shelves. Many are union members, but even with those that aren't, it would seem unfair to have one position in the store sitting, while the rest of the workers have to stand.
Employers should be concerned about the health and well being of their employees. This can prevent people becoming disabled caused by the type of work they do.
Most of them elements running those businesses are 😈 evil.
They careless about their shoes, nevertheless your health.
I love Aldi, great prices and I really don’t mind bagging my own groceries.
Spot on! I remember that the training course really pushed to idea of ergonomics, from the seated position of the cashiers to the set up of the scanners
Love this store i just wish they had electric shopping carts fir the handicapped! But seating cashiers is brilliant! 😊😊😊
My ALDI has one. About a month ago, I'm pulling in a guy using that cart and his family load up. Leave the cart IN THE RAIN. The guy was a tool. I tell the staff on checkout. I'm loading up my car and one the ALDI people come out. It's pouring. It won't move. I come over and say "I think there needs to be weight on the cushion" I was right. I suggested because it was raining to go inside, get a plastic bag, come out, put it on the seat and drive it back. The guy that left it, I don't care how handicapped he was. His wife and 3 kids were with him and he drove the van. One of them could have had the decency to help out the next person that would use it.
@@dlewis9760 Hi, I live in New Jersey what state are you from? Maybe they finally got one here, its been a long time since I've been there! Thanks for helping get that cart back inside! 🙂🙂🙂
I'm a cashier at Walmart. It would make my job much easier if I could sit
One can NEVER please everyone. Do your best and appreciate self.
Being someone who lives in Australia I used to stand full time hours 8 hours a day on one spot I suffered from lack of blood supply to my legs and ended up in extreme pain from this. All because in Australia most workplaces have no allowed check stand with stools.
Standing on the spot for hours on end is super hard on the blood, muscles and bones and body, it is very unhealthy to stand in one space all day.
The Aldi I shop at in Dundalk Md. just installed some self checkout registers.I think it's great b/c I can get in and out faster. Not b/c of cashiers but the customers that stand there waiting for their total price before they even open their wallet or purse. When I had no choice I put my items on belt, got my credit card in machine and waited for cashier to hand me receipt. Keep things moving along.
Well the Aldi where I reside severely needs to install self-checkout because they have 7 lanes but NEVER more than 2 cashiers!! I almost made a scene a few weeks ago over it.
I'd rather wait & get the service I am being charged for gratis. I respected it when it was to ensure 3rd shifters don't get robbed. Now there is no 24 hr markets-and they are taking away the registers for more ya'll scans-cause I sure am not. We lost many secretary jobs with automated-they took the baggers-now they are taking the cashiers & need far lessbpeople to pull carts due to machines-but prices are up a few hundred percent across the board? When did we get the savings for the sacrifice of service??? . I would rather see 10 cashiers than 1 cashier manning 10 ya'll scans-more jobs for more regular people. But we know convenience is an attractive lure to a human.
It actually works out a little faster for me. I bring my own bags. I just put the stuff in the bags directly from the scan. Use the belt, they put the stuff in the carriage and then I have to take the stuff out of the cart. Bag it and then put the bags back in the cart.
@@mnash840omg,you had people do unimportant jobs and now you re mad bc progress?!😂😂
Maybe evolve as a nation, don t you think?!
And i will not stay in a longer line just because you re a lazy, backward person
Back when i lived in the UK every supermarket cashier (not just Aldi) sat down. I was shocked when moving to the US as everyone stands here.
Also....back in the 90's at Aldis the cashiers knew all the prices no scanning back then at Aldi's, bit old fashioned it was compared to say Tesco's or Sainsbury's. You needed a good memory to work at there and they were QUICK too.
Hope the quality has improved, they used to be a little rough, i remember buying baked beans which was mostly sauce with about 3 beans... that was 1994 though😅
I remember when they didn't have scanners and Aldi employees had to memorize prices and punch it in on the register. They were still very fast
That's crazy!
I remember that too!
999 items in stock only to allow cashiers to type and memorize 3 digit numbers only. German efficiency!
I love Aldi and I have noticed their cashiers are very fast. They are certainly not at a disadvantage by sitting.
Aldi is my favorite grocery store ❤
You forgot to mention that the barcoding on Aldi's products has more then one barcode on the package eliminating the need to locate a single barcode thus improving the efficiency of ringing up items.
Except for water. It's the heaviest item in the store and the barcode is on the bottom. It IS a huge barcode. Same for the crackers.
They are fast and efficient!
Fast because they have to be or get fired
The footage at 1:47 shows a "Rewe" supermarket (a different company!). Doesn't really matter because in Germany, the cashiers always sit at the checkout.
I honestly don't believe that. We had to scan super fast when I was a cahsier at Winn-Dixie. I was scanning stuff half-way up the belt and ready to key in produce codes I'd remember by heart before you could blink. I was ranked the 3rd fastest cashier out of all cahiers from every single Winn-Dixie in the USA at that time. I LOVED food stamps customers and customers planning parties or had very large groups of people/families to feed from week to week.
What don’t you honestly believe? That the cashiers are more efficient sitting down? Well, no, not if you’re comparing them to someone who has an agenda to become the fastest ringer within a nationwide company like you did. LOL! They’re talking about normal cashiers not grabby cashiers that are reaching for everything in sight. (PS. The public thinks you are totally annoying.)
Damn you the perfect worker
Wow, you own the deed to the factory now? 😂
@@hooked4 Nah. I was just doing what they trained us to do.
Who was the number one?
It’s painful to be standing up all day. Of course people should be allowed to sit. It’s 2023 not 1823.
I'm so glad I found out why they sit down as otherwise I was going to be awake all night trying to work it out.....😂
😂
I love Aldi’s I always find everything I need and spend less on items that I get from other grocery stores
All cashier's in Jamaica sit behind the register ain't nothing strange for me to see here
In Brazil, it is the same. Cashier's sit at every local store.
As a german I cannot understand why sitting while working is framed as "taking breaks" or being lazy. I have never a cashier standing.
Difference to germany is also that the cashier doesn't put your items back into your cart, it's your duty to do that. Sometimes it's annoying if there are very slow people in front of you and they buy 30 things, don't put them away in their cart and then start searching for money (who could have guessed that you need to pay ...).
I am faster than usual Aldi cashiers, and my stuff on the belt is already ordered, so heavy and big stuff that goes into my bag first will be scanned first, so I am done with packing my shopping bag and have my card ready before the cashing terminal is even ready. I love it :). Even better is self checkout, so I don't have to wait in line, because people still go to the cashier line.
Greertings from Germany. So funny to see that our minimum for a store is crazy in the USA
I don't think i ever seen a cashier work while standing🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sure do love Aldis. Oh yes, they are so fast . love all the unexpected surprises .
It’s not only German Aldi. In Poland cashiers sit as well.
The part about waiting to scan until it's all on the belt. I get that yes, the time from start scan to end scan will be faster for the cashier's stats. But the total time won't be any faster. There will still be all the time before, when the customer is putting their stuff on the belt. And all the time after scanning when the customer (sometimes slow) deals with paying.
Just happy to see them actually have cashiers. I refuse to check myself out and won't go to stores where that's the only option, especially HOME DEPOT, who could care less about customers and have commited to not hiring cashiers any longer. Walmart is almost there but I hate seeing this trend and will shop Aldi knowing there are cashiers. Simple. Profitable.
This is great, in other countries, they do sit down, and it doesn't take away from their proficiency.
They sit because they literally work so hard multitasking and doing other laborious jobs in the store that if they were to stand as cashiers they would likely collapse in front of customers, Retailers today are nothing but sadistic dictator's and ultimately it's their own greed that will be their demise.
ALDI is a german Supermarket where it’s common that cashiers sit down while checking customers out.
Being a cashier at Wal-Mart 9-6 is hell full time, very stressful, you will have disrupted sleep. I was standing the whole time, so I dont know if sitting is better, doubt it. At the aldi I shop at, now it is all self check out and one cashier, which is better. Being a cashier at busy places is hell.
Our Aldi's in FL are moving to self checkout. Experienced that the other day in Tampa😡
Makes no sense to say the cashier waits untill all the products are on the belt to start scanning so they don't have to wait for the customer to dig through their purse for the money to pay. Either you wait while they place items on the belt or you wait for them to dig for their money. Kinda dumb advice. Let the cashier pick if they want to sit or not. They know how they feel. If they are comfortable sitting or standing is entirely up to them. Sitting too long is bad too. If the cashier is comfortable they will work better. Common sense.
It is fine to wait a moment for payment after all items are scanned.
@dea9273 you are still being timed tho fyi
@@rebeccasmith1048 You are? But why? All items checked, you have no control over how fast customers pay! That's not fair at all.
You don't say that much time when you have to wait for them to load the register with the Adams. Just start scanning. Anybody can have her numbers when you line things up.
In kenya cashiers sit down. US shocked me
Our cashiers sits at Aldi I'm in the US
America is so behind!
It's because companies in the US don't care about their employees. Aldi is the only grocery store that allows this here
Lack of indoor plumbing in Kenya shocks me.
I love Aldi ❤ i wish they were on the west coast ❤
California has Aldi socal
Aldi is european and in europe it is normal for them to be sitting. In europe they treat workers like human and not robots
Having all your items on the belt before they start scanning is not true. The times I have been never did this. What if you have way to many items to put on belt and have to wait until the cashier scans to put more on? What about folks who have autheristis in their hands and can't move as fast?
All food stores in Germany have setting cashiers.
In our Aldi most of the check outs are self serve. Only one register has a checker.
2 registers in mine. I've never seen the 2nd one running. 6 self checkouts.
All cashiers should have at least a stool. So hard to stay on yur feet for hrs! Bad for yur whole body!
In Italy the cashiers sit and do their job with efficiency.
Customer scan at the Aldi store here...no chair 😂
Anybody knows if Aldi is getting mobility carts for seniors in the future because I would like to shop at Aldi s but do to my handicap I can't hopefully someone from Aldi would see my comment and suggest it to headquarters
My ALDI has one. The one I used to go to has one.
I stopped being a cashier because I can't handle standing in one place. Herniated disk at 16 and it was ignored until I was 23, so yeah. I won't go back to cashiering until I'm allowed to sit.
I am a cashier in Central Texas, we stand on very thick mats, but we stand. Even our pregnant partners stand. You do get used to it, I would prefer the ability to sit...but it is the job.
Not having to bag items is a big help too
Only in America would anyone feel the need to explain letting cashiers sit down the rest of the world its just usual.
Before scanners aldi cashier's had to know prices by memory.
Now, not near the merchandise they sell today!
Yes. I was a cashier who was seat and fast
My Aldi has started self checkout. Not a fan.Just one cashier.🙁
Productivity because they are not as tired on their back as standing so that translate to faster ringing. Win win.
Exactly
I dont mind at all if employees sit or stand as long as they're comfortable and doing their job assisting customers.
I love ALDIs. Less theft too I’m sure !
Walmart needs to learn from them!!!
They put in a new Aldi near me and I was really happy. Then 2 weeks later, they quit selling roasted chickens. Stopped shopping there, basically. I can use a roasted chicken for so many dishes for me or my grandkids.
If it makes you feel any better roast chicken isn’t a common item. It was probably a short time specialty item.
@@jenmills5081 Too bad, along with some of their veggies and sides, it sure makes an easy dinner.
1:48 😂Talks about Aldi, shows a cashier at REWE.
Technology has removed the friendly human interaction customers had received in the past because of rushing employees serving customers (corporate benefit) and causing employees to become impatient with slower (seniors & disabled) customers.
I've been shopping at Aldi's for many years. I love Aldi's, their employees are wonderful. I'm a senior citizen & no employee has EVER been impatient with me. I hate shopping anywhere else.
As a former Walmart employee, I can say that I loved my elderly customers . When they came it was a chance for me to finally catch a break. Especially when they wanted certain items rung up first and wanted to know the total after each item. Than the extra long good talks, I promise if I could have elderly customers all day I would have.
In general employees are not impatient because they are dealing with slower (seniors & disabled) customers but mostly because that same employee after he's done at the cash register he has to restock, clean etc.
NEVER blame the employee, the filthy employers are ruining everything
That’s nice for the much needed comfort but as a cashier I found myself having to wait on the customer more then they were having to wait for me to scan and bag their items.
I live in Germany and the only time I saw people not sitting in the grocery store was when I visited Japan
All cashier's should sit ,standing isn't good for hours ,I hope no one's complaining, cause there's always a person who complains. All cashier's should sit.
In the Netherlands EVERY Cashier is sittind down at EVERY grocery store ALWAYS. and we put a coin for a shopping cart. Its like this in whole Europe as far as i know.
Cashiers at mine are doing other jobs and have a bell you press to alert them if you're in line. I find them very pleasant compared to the rude Walmart employees.
Well, as a European, I am astonished that USA cashiers have to stand! Why? To give them leg problems?
All around Europe, cashiers sit by the register rather than standing as it is done in the USA.
An Aldis opened up in my neighborhood we didn't have one. First time i went with my mom we found some things unusually strange like the shopping cart rental system, and the cashiers sitting down and then they don't bag our items we have to bag them on another bagging area. We thought they were being lazy but i'm sorry we didnt know 😅
Just maybe not a rocking chair for security guards.
All Dominican Republic cashiers sit as well
In Germany every cashier in every store is sitting
I bet they have happier and friendlier cashiers as well
That's a store thing. I have 2 ALDIs I shop at. Great people in each one.
Here in the UK all supermarkets have seats for their cashiers!
The wait times in ALDI checkouts is still excessive because there are so few cashiers available at any one time. I often go elsewhere like Lidl due to the wait times.
That Aldi cashier at 1:54 apparently works at Rewe in Germany or Austria.
German law:
Appendix ArbStättV, requirements for workplaces according to Section 3 Paragraph 1, No. 3.3 (2):
“If the work can be carried out in whole or in part while sitting or if the work process allows them to sit down at times, employees must be provided with seating at the workplace. If, for operational reasons, seating cannot be set up directly at the workplace, even though the work process allows them to sit down at times, employees must be provided with seating near the workplace.”
I used to be a cashier at hannaford. There was like a month when I had to sit because I had a boot on my foot. I definitely felt weird sitting down. Maybe aldi cashiers are use to it.
I applied at aldis just because they were able to sit down. I’m in a wheelchair and it will be perfect for me if I’m able to land the position.
Walmart could never 😤
Smart move on their part sitting will help them avoid foot pain. I work at Costco and many of my coworkers who work in the front end suffer from plantar fasciitis and other foot problems and have to rely on, expensive inserts, gel shots or surgery from standing on concrete all day
So why don’t you hire the handicap that need to sit?

In Uk all the cash register staff have seats. Have since the 70s including Aldi, SPAR, ASDA, all the grocery stores. Not new concept, and nope they aren’t as fast in uk as they are here at my local local Ralph’s. I think it may be more to a labor law or Europe just does it that way. But hey it made me click to see how it would be reported on this side of the pond!
Sadly, my local Aldi has gone the "self checkout" route. Often there is only one lane with a human cashier. I don''t usually use self checkout, because my order is normally about 25 or 30 items. The cashiers are usually quick and can scan items as fast as I can unload them from my cart.
They need to be fast at scanning , since there are always only one cashier 🤬
Good what a way to go . Its hard standing all that time in a small area is hard on a body.
I wish Aldi would get an app like Meijer grocery where customers ring up their items with the app while they shop, and/or a self checkout lane.
Yup, lose more jobs to automation. 😢
From someone that worked there.....if you are not sitting ar the register, you are working as fast as you possibly can stocking all the departments. They pay great because they have 4 employees doing the job of 10.
Where are they supposed to sit? On top of it?
Unfortunately, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most if not all cashier jobs will be eliminated in the near future. I went into a Five Below store last week. There are no cashiers, just one staff overseeing 10 self checkouts.
I hate my groceries being THROWN into a cart full force…crushed and all its weird!!
I have never seen a standing cashier in any store in the UK. It seems very cruel to me.
I love ALDI. I have been shopping at ALDI since they came to Atlanta Georgia for food staples. ( you know flour, sugar, eggs, and produce. They are great and I am always surprised when go other Grocery stores because of time, thinking that it would be a convenience go Walmart or Kroger. To found these food store are so much higher. I like they closed on Sunday to give their employees a day of rest. If If this company is considered of their workers just imagine how will they treat their customers?
There's some non ALDIs around me, I feel when I walk in that I have SUCKER painted on my forehead.
I had no idea cashiers had to stand up in murica. Just let them sit down.
