Hanging bikes from the ceiling has been common in bike repair shops for any bike, in the Netherlands, as far as I've seen. Seems much more practical than stands.
Really interesting to see behind the scenes and to find out about the companies producing different bikes. Glad you got to spend time in the Netherlands.
I have such a fascination with cargo bikes. I don't have any kids or any need to carry anything around, but, I would totally borrow my neighbors kids just to take them for spins around the neighborhood. I just think it would be fun to do annual christmas light viewings, and even try to find some kind of bicycle halloween haunted bike paths or something. It just seems amazing, and I'm super jealous of people who have tiny humans they can cart around on bicycles.
I’m in a similar boat. I want my siblings to get cargo bikes just so I can ride their kids around when I’m visiting :) I need to make more friends with kids. There was a guy that was in a cargo bike fb group that was a nanny and it looked like he had a blast with other peoples kids :)
@@Propelbikes That is so nice, to give kids a ride in a cargo bike. I like that too, so I give kids candy while riding my trike next to the cargo bike. They allways enjoy it.
Cargo bikes are not just for people with kids. I am a photographer/videographer and use my cargo ebike quite a lot. I also pickup deliver food to people in need every week.
They are lovely! We got one just to enjoy life, I transport my partner around in it all the time. It's good enough for bike vacays too, deluxe style. Just so much fun and practical :)
I'm going to retire pretty soon... one of the top things on my list is to retire one of our cars... we have 5 (hard to believe, it's only a family of 4)... One we rarely drive, but I really want to get rid of one of the daily drivers and replace it with a cargo bike... I'm researching heavily which bike I want to purchase... then I'm going to spend a couple dedicated days a month talking to government planners about infrastructure... I've come full circle... when I came here after the army, one of the first things I did was get on the bicycle advisory board (as a college student)... then life happened... but as I retire I'm going to try and go back to that...much needs to be done! In fact honestly very little has been done even though where I live is right next to a major university... the football stadium holds right at I think 80,000 people... but Bikes are more or less not welcome here. Once you drift off campus you danger level goes up drastically, we have to fix this!
I know exactly how you feel. I was thinking the same thing. Retire, get heavily into bicycle advocacy. One of the challenges I think is bicycles have turned into a left vs right thing. I'm on the right, and I'd love to talk to people on the right about why bicycles and bicycle infrastructure make so much sense. I think they just close their ears when ever the typical bicycle advocate talks to them, and that's a huge shame, because they're missing out on amazing experiences.
@@skyfirefly76 Cheaper infrastructure/maintenance, healthier population, less dependency on foreign oil/gas, larger available work pool (parents not forced to be Uber drivers for their kids), more available income (bikes are a lot cheaper than cars to buy and maintain). Our model projections suggest that transforming urban roads over the next 40 years, using best practice physical separation on main roads and bicycle-friendly speed reduction on local streets, would yield benefits 10-25 times greater than costs." @@Propelbikes I personally think that all cities around EU should have city center banned to cars, so showing a real scenario of using cargo ebike with the business model to sustain the idea will be key to remove cars. When you show that it makes sense from a $$ point of view, people will change their mind set. Great videos btw !
In my town Utrecht, the Netherlands, you can lend, not rent, a cargobike to bring your large waste (waste bigger then can fit in a garbage bag) to the municipality waste station. In the bike parking garage Catherijnesingel there is a bikeshop where you can rent a cargobike type Filibus.
Love all your videos. My wife and I are new to ebikes and we love them. We have started to use them to run errands when we need just a few things. Started to ride to work as well. They really help to take the challenge out of riding a bike and make it more enjoyable. We ride for fun and the enjoyment of being out side. I do have a question, why do most cargo bikes have the trunk or box on the front of the bike.
From my point of view, cargobike share is even more relevant than bikeshare. Many people use a bike every day but only occasionally a cargobike. In addition, a normal bicycle needs almost no parking space and can often be carried relatively easily over stairs, on the other hand the latter is regularly not possible with a cargo bike and makes parking a cargo bike considerably more difficult.
If the cargo ebike is your sole vehicle, because you buy the more expensive one and get rid of your car, being able to rent one when yours is in the shop can be crucial.

Really interested in learning more about the commercial side of UA bike production. Bikes for last-mile delivery seem really useful in cities including smaller cities seeking to reduce car use and preserve space in smaller town centers.
Thanks for all the work putting into your videos, really like how you show the background of this industry which is slowly becoming as the car industry. Urban arrow are the first on the cargo bike market but as a courier i'm not 100% convince by their bikes. I'd love to see you interviewing courier company or cargo bike company that are used for professional delivery :) thanks again !!
Keep up the diversity in subjects. They are somehow all related. From the way we built our cities, to the head wear we use on a bike. And sometimes we are more amused by a video than another, but you cannot please everyone all the time.
More business bikes/true cargo bikes please. In Norway "cargo" bikes are 99.99% kids carrier bikes. I have only seen 1 pure cargo bike that was a 6 wheeled recumbent style e-bike "bolted" on to a box with a trailing second box, used by DHL.
Fantastic to see bicycle's becoming more than just toys for wealthy people and cargo bikes are going to get us to the place where city roads will soon have more bicycle's than cars 🙏🏻
In the Netherlands we are already that far. Every city has more bicycles than cars. All commute to school, university, city center and sports is done by bicycle. A commute to another city center is done by train, you cycle to the train station, hop on a train, get off and a OV-fiets (rent-a-bike) is ready to take you for the last miles.

I think that here, that Portland Oregon might be a good candidate for adoption of Cargo Bikes, as it's a fairy compact city with better than average bike infrastructure, but also some fair hills that might dictate electric assist. If you're interested I can look a bit more in-depth to see what might be happening and the official interest and planning. Also, Ive been knocking around with some Solidworks designs for a very light EV/Velo concept with enclosed rear cargo and/or passenger accommodation, I could share with you. I also have some time available 3D modeling any designs you or others might have in mind.
I'm from Belgium, really love you content! I'm currently looking into buying a new cargo bike. Comming from a 3wheel babboe, I'm now looking Into the more nimble models while still maintaining the space I need. I tested several bikes - Lovens explorer - gazelle makkie - urban arrow family - Cube cargo hybrid - Carqon cruise On paper, I preferred the Lovens or Carqon, but taking a test drive I have to say that I definitely preferred the UA. I really dislike the disconnect laggy feel of cable steering. Also the fact that UA incrementally update their bikes ensures accessories mostly fit across the whole range. Any thoughts on why, for now, UA sticks to no front suspension for their family model? I probably will end up buying one (2022 model) but I'm a bit worried that a front suspension is maybe almost ready and I'll miss out on that... . What do you think? Or do you think that front suspension is not a big deal ?

in germany we have cargo bike sharing via the ADFC, that is the German equivalent of the AAA but just for bikes. The ADFC offers their cargo bikes for free. But it is very welcome to leave a little donation or an ADFC membership
The Netherlands front the Atlantic ocean and it rains a lot there I’d be curious how their bike companies stave off rust issues as most of the bikes in the Netherlands are left outside most if not all the time
Apparently your opinion is based on some bad images of Amsterdam. 90% of all bikes are kept in a convenient back yard building where they are dry and out of the elements. Every house in the Netherlands has them and they are required by law since 1923. Furthermore they have to be accessible from the street, direct or by a path that gives access to the back yard. Even apartment buildings are required to have a bicycle storage, communal or individual per apartment.
@@dutchman7623 They don't fit cargo bikes, and on new houses they are a lousy wooden 1,80x3m60 prefab piece of junk at best. You really need a place with a private car park to properly store these bikes and be able to ride them out without much hassle. The average UA I see in my Dutch city has a parking spot in the front yard and is attached with a chain to a anchor on the front of the house. No front yard, no UA!

The emergency bike is not good unless itsfor pharmacy deliveries. The best emergency vehicle is a motorcycle that can go on high speed for fast arrival. The rest are interesting like the delivery system.
I’d love if I could rent a cargo bike when I need to haul some stuff home from Home Depot or Lowes, if I don’t have so much cargo that it’d necessitate the use of a truck. Just having cargo bikes as a rental alternative would be cool in the US. It’s faster, more nimble, and a helluva lot more fun to get around by bike vs. auto. Seeing people using one would be like free advertisement, esp. if people see women & older kids riding one, since that would signal that if THEY feel safe, then it must be. As a petite, middle-aged female, I think it’s good for other women to see me out there not being afraid, and just wearing my street clothes, running errands and carrying my cargo. I’m in the 562 area, and it’s rare to see women riding bikes outside of the beach cities here, so I hope more of them consider it as an alternative to driving, since I’m never scared or intimidated. If you’re assertive & decisive, I think that in most cases, you’ll be fine. I’m very communicative (nods, smiles, waves, arm signals), so drivers will usually know how I’m planning to proceed on the road.
+Mo Poppins oddly enough I’ve had this same discussion with the mobility department in Long Beach on several occasions. I totally agree that offering cargo bike rentals is a critical step. Theft does seem to be a big deterrent, but I’m working on some ideas for that 🤞
@@Propelbikes The issue with things like lowes, is that the space inside those modern cargobikes is kinda limited and their product tend to be "on the bigger side". The classic cargobikes (which where actually meant for cargo, as in: 400kg, 2m3 of it), those are actually viable for something like lowes. But are a lot harder to ride.
Instead of renting one, just buy one. You'll be amazed how often you jump on. We went to 0 use of the car in the city, and easily do 50km a day on the cargo bike for shopping, hauling kids to sports (up to 12 yo), visiting construction supply shops or even IkHeYa (their car park flats are great with cargo bikes). 300km/week is pretty expensive on sharing plans. We just bought it now, mid-winter, so that only expands use towards the summer.
Just imagine what it’d be like if you could come in from the train station and the cargoroo system of shared cargobikes was there for public use, instead of a smaller sized car rental. It’d be so convenient, and it would save the respective people tremendously on their maintenance bills, having a whole fleet of rental bikes for the public to go around. Maybe one day the various constituencies would integrate it similarly into bank/transit cards like there is in NL.
I don't think the cangaroo system is good to have. I get the idea that all ride sharing services do harm to e-bike acceptance. Ownership = taking care. Sharing = neglecting. If you would see these poor UA's with bites taken out of their cargo boxes, put on fire, dumped in the bushes (or in an Amsterdam canal!), does that help getting people doing away with the car and get a cargo bike instead? Most bike sharing I see happening has a leasure purpose: a kiddy ride alternative now the amusement parks are locked down.
Pon once started with importing Volkswagen cars so every brand in the Volkswagen groups will be imported into the Netherlands through Pon (Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat, Cupra (electric Seats), Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, M.A.N., Scania )
so you have to take your car for work every day then change jobs….that’s what I did! Lost weight and feel connected to life riding my bike everyday :-)
With Covid and work from home I have found many people leaving cities for non-urban experience which I consider a good thing! In the US we have enough land to not need everyone in a city so we don't need cargo bikes like these. They are cool, but don't fit the US use case. I have an enduro e-Motorcycle.
It’s this kind of thinking that leads to the sad state of US infrastructure, whether it’s for transit, cycling, or anything other than car-centric suburban sprawl. Upzoning neighborhoods, abolishing minimum parking requirements, reducing traffic lanes for automobiles, and building protected bike & pedestrian paths would improve the quality of life for everyone (not to mention reduce housing costs, health care costs, etc.).
@@rodgersayles0707 that must be why the largest population centers in the US are rural places out in the country like New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Chicago, Boston, etc.
We have the Cargo Bikes from Urban Arrow at our Gorillas facilities (grocery delivery service). No one wants to ride these 7000€ overpriced death machines. Feels like you are trying to balance a 2 meter pole on the tip of your finger. All we asked for were dampeners for our seat to help our backs on the bumpy roads. Instead we received a coffin on wheels
i like to regularly rent them via cargoroo and find them easier to ride then a regular bike, the motor and stepless gear makes for a very smooth ride. Maybe if you are in a big hurry all the time like in the delivery business its a different experience?
There must be a difference in the selection of Gorillas riders and Coolblue riders then, because I talked to quite some Coolblue riders who love their Urban Arrow.

Just having cargo bikes as a rental alternative would be cool in the US. It’s faster, more nimble, and a helluva lot more fun to get around by bike vs. auto. Seeing people using one would be like free advertisement, esp. if people see women & older kids riding one, since that would signal that if THEY feel safe, then it must be. As a petite, middle-aged female, I think it’s good for other women to see me out there not being afraid, and just wearing my street clothes, running errands and carrying my cargo.
I’m in the 562 area, and it’s rare to see women riding bikes outside of the beach cities here, so I hope more of them consider it as an alternative to driving, since I’m never scared or intimidated. If you’re assertive & decisive, I think that in most cases, you’ll be fine. I’m very communicative (nods, smiles, waves, arm signals), so drivers will usually know how I’m planning to proceed on the road.
+Mo Poppins oddly enough I’ve had this same discussion with the mobility department in Long Beach on several occasions. I totally agree that offering cargo bike rentals is a critical step. Theft does seem to be a big deterrent, but I’m working on some ideas for that 🤞
@@Propelbikes The issue with things like lowes, is that the space inside those modern cargobikes is kinda limited and their product tend to be "on the bigger side".
The classic cargobikes (which where actually meant for cargo, as in: 400kg, 2m3 of it), those are actually viable for something like lowes. But are a lot harder to ride.
Maybe businesses like Ikea and Home Depot should start that service themsselves...
Instead of renting one, just buy one. You'll be amazed how often you jump on. We went to 0 use of the car in the city, and easily do 50km a day on the cargo bike for shopping, hauling kids to sports (up to 12 yo), visiting construction supply shops or even IkHeYa (their car park flats are great with cargo bikes). 300km/week is pretty expensive on sharing plans. We just bought it now, mid-winter, so that only expands use towards the summer.
Just imagine what it’d be like if you could come in from the train station and the cargoroo system of shared cargobikes was there for public use, instead of a smaller sized car rental. It’d be so convenient, and it would save the respective people tremendously on their maintenance bills, having a whole fleet of rental bikes for the public to go around. Maybe one day the various constituencies would integrate it similarly into bank/transit cards like there is in NL.
I don't think the cangaroo system is good to have. I get the idea that all ride sharing services do harm to e-bike acceptance. Ownership = taking care. Sharing = neglecting. If you would see these poor UA's with bites taken out of their cargo boxes, put on fire, dumped in the bushes (or in an Amsterdam canal!), does that help getting people doing away with the car and get a cargo bike instead? Most bike sharing I see happening has a leasure purpose: a kiddy ride alternative now the amusement parks are locked down.

Personally, I wouldn't want to have to balance a box that big, I'd rather have a trike.
Balancing that box is, and this might surprise you, just as hard as balancing a regular bike. In other words not hard at all!

With Covid and work from home I have found many people leaving cities for non-urban experience which I consider a good thing! In the US we have enough land to not need everyone in a city so we don't need cargo bikes like these.
They are cool, but don't fit the US use case.
I have an enduro e-Motorcycle.
It’s this kind of thinking that leads to the sad state of US infrastructure, whether it’s for transit, cycling, or anything other than car-centric suburban sprawl. Upzoning neighborhoods, abolishing minimum parking requirements, reducing traffic lanes for automobiles, and building protected bike & pedestrian paths would improve the quality of life for everyone (not to mention reduce housing costs, health care costs, etc.).

@@rodgersayles0707 that must be why the largest population centers in the US are rural places out in the country like New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Chicago, Boston, etc.
We have the Cargo Bikes from Urban Arrow at our Gorillas facilities (grocery delivery service). No one wants to ride these 7000€ overpriced death machines. Feels like you are trying to balance a 2 meter pole on the tip of your finger.
All we asked for were dampeners for our seat to help our backs on the bumpy roads. Instead we received a coffin on wheels
i like to regularly rent them via cargoroo and find them easier to ride then a regular bike, the motor and stepless gear makes for a very smooth ride. Maybe if you are in a big hurry all the time like in the delivery business its a different experience?
I guess that it's a personal preference. Personally, I would rather use a nice trailer rather than a front loader.
There must be a difference in the selection of Gorillas riders and Coolblue riders then, because I talked to quite some Coolblue riders who love their Urban Arrow.
