Clifton Hicks - Raleigh and Spencer

- I learned "Raleigh & Spencer" from several musicians around Watauga County, North Carolina, including Josh Hayes and Matt Kinman. My version also draws inspiration from a fiddle recording of Tommy Jarrell, whose brother-in-law got the song from a local black guitarist.
It's been said that "Raleigh and Spencer are burning down..." is a reference to the Civil War; however, Raleigh was never burned during the war, and Spencer wasn't founded until the 1890s.
My instrument is an 1888 Thompson & Odell "The Luscomb" banjo tuned ~ d♯BEF♯B (three frets below f♯DGAD).
Raleigh and Spencer they're burning down
There's no more liquor in this town (x2)
What you gonna do baby to wet them pretty lips
When this whole damn world's going dry (×2)
You can trample the flowers down around my grave
But they'll rise up and bloom once again (×2)

I saw that head shake. Played live music over 30 years now, I know what that means. Whatever note you thought you miss freted was only audible to you my friend. That was a great take.
You've taught me a ton since I found you. Thanks!
Playing so close to the bridge gives such a gnarly sound, it's incredible to listen to. Such awesome technique.
Far more importantly though, it's a wonderful song played with passion and heart. Really inspiring. Thanks

Gotta get that ol square body runnin might need it when the e.m.p hits. You already got the off grid radio down pat.
Your dog drinking at the end was great! I wondered what the noise was at first.
My family came from Bakersfield, North Carolina as a bunch of Unionists. I see the beauty of these songs in the smiles of those who sing them. I love my heritage and music!
If there's no more liquor in this town, then im moving, baby.
I love starting off Saturday with a tune from you, Brother
Great tune Clifton...I'm out on Arizona and have met Matt he's got some tunes and a amazing musician
Love the music, as always, and the truck. I have one like it, 1983 black GMC diesel. Your sound reminds me of a Doc Boggs feel. Excellent!
I've been listening to your songs on and on again for months now. It's like reliving ages past. Thank you for that
Thank you so much - awesome
That's top notch brother
❤ Clif and Copper ❤
gorgeous chevy. you slay that banjo
Awesome, I dig the smoky cab square body.... Beautiful !!!
Now there is an album cover.... :)
Burn it down! Thanks for sharing.
Sounding good, swamp fox!
It’s like a more aggressive old rubbin alcohol. Dig it and dig the scenery and broll. Great job, I think a camo bh run would be sick
Clifton, I wanted to thanks for all that you do. I have been watching your channel for a few months and finally caved in and purchased my first banjo…it hasn’t arrived but I can already tell it will replace the guitar as my favorite instrument
Same here,... Ol Leather Stocking inspired me to buy my first banjo.
Awesome!
Damn, I can hear the angels through my phone speaker. That banjo resonates so loud. Love it.
Awesome!! I also love the truck in the background!! Always loved old trucks!
Don't get much more fine than that.
🔥 ❤ 🔥
Flowers going to bloom again...

😊👍
it's summer Cliff ! High and tight!!!!!
Hi Clifton,
Two questions:
1. What metals are used on your strings
2. I could not find any original recording or anything of this song other than contemporary covers but your version of it sounds very tight and has that Doc Boggs style which sounds remarkable. Did your playing style of it come from a previous version or is this styled after your own take on it? You're the only banjo player that can sound like Doc Boggs in all my evenings of scouring UA-cam for more, and here you nailed it.

If you're in NoCar, you should hook up with Abby the Spoon Lady and do a duo!
No one calls it "NoCar"
This ain't California.
@@blainechappell5383 I wouldn't have the slightest fucking idea, I'm eurotrash. It just seemed like convenient shorthand
love me some squarebodys.
