We had the best time in Haines! It was a slice of real Alaska, no cruise line-owned shops, diamonds international, etc. Instead it was all local shops selling locally created art, sculptures, clothes, toys etc.. we picked up a wooden Orca sculpture that sits in our living room, just beautiful. The hammer museum is cool as well. There's a free shuttle bus to the downtown area, where you can eat, wander around, stub your finger with a hammer, and just relax in real Alaska. Hoonah didn't feel real to us, it was like the whole area was just fabricated by the natives for the cruise line. Glad we stopped at Haines on Radiance of the Seas. Thanks for the video!
When we went to Haines Alaska. We rented a car from the hotel in town. They met us at the port and took us to where the Rent-A-Car was. Then we went out to the animal reserve that you guys talked about that you have not been there yet. That is an amazing excursion. Princess Cruise Line offers that as a cruise excursion. We did our tour independently but we were in a group of people from Princess Cruise line. Steve and his animals are amazing. Jay you must take Dee. She will love the interaction of all of the animals.
In the early seventies my wife and I were awaiting the arrival of the ferry at Haines. As the ferry navigated a turn to port it leaned slightly. A fire crew awaiting delivery of a new fire engine were made distraught when the unit, visible from the dock at the exit hatch, rolled off the ferry into 600’ of salt water. Apparently, someone neglected to set the brake. I assume that was the engines last trip. Also notable was lunch at a small restaurant. Last year I came across our lunch receipt and then dialled their telephone number out of curiosity. Hamburgers are still on the menu.
Bald eagle foundation is cool and walkable from port. $15. And a gift shop of course. There are wwii ruins you can walk through and lots of historic buildings in fort seward. a beach trail walkable from the port. Local shops by the port. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there on my own. And beautiful mountain views.
If you have been on many Alaskan cruises and seen and done it all in Skagway DO NOT STAY ONBOARD YOUR SHIP!! GO TO HAINES. The fast ferry ride is a blast with increadable scenery you missed while your huge ship headed up to Skagway. It is a must see. The inflatable boat ride down the Chilcat river is amazing. The town is quaint but real. No Carihola or gold shops. No shirts that change color in the sun. Just a real town full of real Alaskans that actually live and work there.
My ship goes to port in Skagway but I'd love to make it over to Haines. I'm not quite sure what is the best way to get there? I see the fast ferry for $38 but then can't find the website. Love your most helpful videos! Visiting Alaska the end of Aug 2024
I felt bad for Haines on this stop. They were not ready for us on Radiance. This was the highlight of the day for me though because of what happened earlier with Michael. I didn't find out until 3 days later that I wasn't supposed to leave the ship, but in my defense this wasn't on my card when I scanned it (I was negative and stayed that way!) Thanks for snapping a photo with me that day! My Mom and I went into town and just walked around.
We were there for a day and visited friends. The port where the cargo ships come in is huge. It's almost as big as Vancouver. Try and get to see that. We went to a pub on the board walk that had good views and food. It's quite hilly and I would try to get a bus tour.
I went to Haines on vacation in July 2007.
16 years later I'm still here.
I found my Forever Home.

I live in this town thank you for coming and promoting our town. It’s a nice quiet town. Please come back.

Good morning!
Wandered around and found a food truck that had delicious halibut fish and chips. Was near port by campground when I was there this summer.

Going to Haines in may. Doesn’t look like much there if you don’t book some kind of excursion

I haven’t been to Haines
And this was a really really useful post!!
What cruise line goes to Haines?
We had a stop there via Royal Caribbean, but I presume a few other lines would make stops there with smaller ships as well.
We will be there on Ruby Princess
Viking Ocean apparently
Haines do pretty good with underwear and they did really well with covid masks 😷
