The melody of vintage Sunadavinodini - M Vasudevacharya's "Devadi Deva" - M Balamuralikrishna (1966)

- Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK) has sung some exquisite kritis and rare rāgās of various composers and has received praise from the composers themselves. Their response typically being that BMK has sung it beyond what they had imagined. Mysore Vasudevacharya’s composition Dévādi déva in the rāga Sunādavinōdini is one such example.
When BMK rendered the rāga Sunādavinōdini and the kriti ‘Dévādi déva Shri Vāsudévā’ in front of its composer, Mysore Vasudevacharya, the great composer said, “My original composition was like an ordinary girl from a poor-family married into a wealthy family; your rendition is like the same girl when pregnant with a child, joyfully returning to her parents’ home, wearing beautiful ornaments, and bringing unexpected happiness. The song is mine is a mere fact but, it is yours by value.”
Since then, this song became very popular. Many organisers of music Sabhas would normally make a formal request to BMK for this song. Over a period, due to the requests made by the listeners or organisers repeatedly, this song was featuring in most of the concerts, taking away a potential opportunity for the singer to present something of his choice and for the music lovers a loss of listening to something rare from the maestro; had he not been requested to sing Dévādi déva in such a repeated manner. Although, while singing each time, one could observe the spurt of creativity and freshness of the same Sunādavinōdini.
In his countless number of renditions of the song Dévādi déva, if I were to choose ONE of the best renditions, I would choose the version being presented here; an excerpt from a live concert of 1966 with Sri. M S Goplakrishnan (MSG) and Sri. Tanjore P Upendran (TPU).
A search had been going on for years, for a good quality of audio of this recording. Getting the audio to this quality-level presented here, was a challenge owing to non-linear speed variation of the recording. It has taken several hours of work to reduce the variation to a considerable extent and hope you would enjoy listening to it, as much as I did.
One of the important feature of this rendition is BMK’s approach to svara-vinyāsam. The interplay between BMK - TPU and BMK - MSG is indeed a treat to listen.
Please listen and share your reflections.
Vintage BMK... none to equal him.. especially at the peak of his career.. this was perhaps sung when he was about 36 in the 60s..I remember listening to him at the Seshadripuram sabha, Bangalore, who used to conduct the programs in a school.. all concerts were free. I used to go with my dad and have listened to all the greats of those times in that sabha...BMK at that time not only delivered every raaga in the most traditional way but without any effort and to my knowledge no one till today can come anywhere near him, singing in four octaves, deliver gamakas with speed and clarity like him, and of course a voice that delivered every nuance of a raaga that he imagined.
Easwaran R. B. ,
How old are you sir.
Excellence in " Melodious Voice, Wonderfully " Singing" Srie ! VasuDevaaccharryaa Kruthies!". Iam A Big " Fan" of Srie" M. Bala Murali Krishna Garu" Since" my Childhood! Particularly " JayaDeavar Ashtapathi!". W. Respects, Regards. BhuVanamma. W. Aging: 72. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Marvelous, Bharataratna.
In the last 100 years there hasn't been anyone who could do a raaga alapana like BMK. The smoothness of his divine voice, the clarity of the brigaas, the flight of imagination that paints the raaga, like a painter whose imagination brings out a beautiful portrait on a canvas, the power of voice that floats through 3 octaves with ease, the bhava he gives to the song, in everything he was not only unique but unmatched. To my knowledge of following music for over 50 years, he, to me, is the only complete musician that we have had in nearly a century. Add to that his great creativity that makes him the greatest vaaghyekaara since the Trimurtis. We must be grateful we lived during his time, listened to him live and some of us were blessed to have his personal blessing (I being one of them).. The value of his contributions to music will be realized more in the years to come. MSG, to my knowledge, is the only violinist who, being a genius himself, could follow every nuance of BMK's singing like a shadow. Great combination... It's said that BMK sang this song in front of its composer, Mysore Vaasudevachar, who was so moved by his singing that he apparently said that the way BMK sang it was exactly the way he expected it to be sung!!
Nice words!
Greetings from Ukraine!
I fully agree with your comment Eswarangaru it's the ultimate truth that BMK is the embodiment of Carnatic music.,,
Absolutely true!
@@vadimzitsermusicianvlogcha3870 that's awesome to see a Ukrainian listening to south Indian classical music. How did you get to know about our music sir ?
Wow
Excellent Aalabhanai by late Dr M.Balamurali Krishna . I am very pleased. This song I am hearing from 1970. Mysore Vasudeva Char is the creator, but the promoter was Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna. Excellent and amazing. I never forget this song. The Ragh is in my inner Soul. With Greetings, vande Maataram. Bharat Maataki Jai Jai Hind. Congratulations.
sir i thank you very much for bringing out unheard audio recordings of Dr MBK to the benefit of die hard fans of Dr MBK like me. i don't have words to appreciate your efforts. None other than Dr MBK could render this keerthana so melodiously that too in the presence of its composer Sri Mysore Vasudevacharya. there cant be greater tribute to the composer
God of Carnatic music 🙏🙏🙏 Amazing effort to bring a 1966 concert recording to this quality
First of all, as rasika of classical music and more so of BMK, I salute your efforts to present his great music in its pristine form for the posterity. I have heard that Sri Mysore Vasudevacharya, who is the composer of this great Kriti commented that he did not expect his Kriti to become so popular and agreed that it was Balamurali Sir who made his Kriti attain the height that it had become and said with humility that the full credit for it should go to Balamurali and not to himself. What an acknowledgement, indeed. If you watch in the last half century since Balamurali had sung this song, not many vocal musicians have attempted to have this Kriti in their programme for the simple reason that they may not be able to sing it in the style and glory in which BMK sang it. It speaks volumes about this great singer’s contribution to the cause of elevating the Indian Music, as he called it, for his Rasikas and students of music to enjoy wholeheartedly. May God bless you and give you strength to carry out your work, to the purpose which you began. Our blessings to you to carry forward this very great work which probably deserves a doctorate to you!!
Thanks Srinivasa murthy garu.you are blessed & we are also blessed to hear these songs with your help
Yes Devadi deva was his pet song and every time he chose to render it in his impeccable style...
That svara-prastāra was nothing short of *_electric_* ! And when the korvai (if that's the word I want) begins, the way MSG just so smoothly joins in note-for-note is superb. In the response, MSG's violin just *sings*!
And the dialogue between TPU and BMK is totally wild! TPU's exuberance is a great complement to BMK's spirited singing.
What a trio!
That the Āchārya would so generously compliment this young upstart is not in the least surprising. The former was known to be a generous soul and the latter nothing less than exuberantly joyous. It was a perfect match.
In some interview that I watched, BMK referred to some controversy that BMK had falsely claimed the composition as his own. He countered the stupid allegation by citing the great Āchārya's own comments.
This recording is perhaps the best I have heard of this song. Of course, no two renditions have been the same!!
Oh, and for those who may not be that familiar with the āchārya, here is a Wiki page on him: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mysore_Vasudevachar
We are really grateful to you sir, it's such a treasure for all of us.
What an amazing singing. I have not heard this kind of swara prastara.....so much vast experimentation and expressions.
Vary rare to see such quality now a days on stage.
Really WoW!!!!
This combination of BMK-MSG was always the best.
Na Janma dhanyam as I had touched his feet in one occasion about 20 years back. He is an " Avatara Purusha" for the current era !
I'm listening this for the nth time. MSG is real God. No words to describe his following.
No comparison. No comments. This is beyond all that
I am wonder stuck. No words to explain his renduring the raaga, that to in front of the creator of this beautiful keerthana.
Thank you
A great rendition by the maestro Dr. BMK, while, well supported by great MSG and TPU🙏🙏. Thanks for this gift.
I don't think anyone can bring out the bhavam and intention of the composer into the song the way way BMK does. His singing is unparalleled and brings tears to my eyes.
Nostalgic...I remembered my time iat my grandma's house...🙏
This has brought down the heavens, really.
overwhelmed by the beauty and majesty of presentation...pure bhakti
Best one....
Dear Sri Sreenivasa Murthy: no words to thank you for your kindness in uploading this piece of divine music
Thank you sir for uploading.
Mind blowing inderd true devine voice of great late Dr Mangalapalli who belongs Andhra pradesh and Tamilnadu
What to say.. do we have any right to say anything here... all are legends.. that is it.. Only listening with closed eyes with Bhakthi
Always his way of ragaalapana, Kriti rendering with his swara style is marvalous. Added to this the sides are excellent. Always he is alive in Carnatic music world.
However many times one listens to this there remains a deep thirst fir more.
A delightful concert indeed. BMK, MSG and TU at their best. Just Wondering who the 6 unfortunate ones are those who have thumbed down this rendition? Really pity them and their musical acumen.
Devavdi deva keerthana is very melodious thank you
Beautiful sangeetam by Balamurali krishna posted by you sir,
All stalwarts... Composer, accompaniments, guruji, srinivasamyrthygaru, those who have enjoyed and recorded their comments,...A real "entharo mahanubhavulu" experience....
Simply superb ! Thanks 🙏 for sharing this great piece. Divine and sublime !
I am glad I learnt enough to appreciate Indian classical music. May my Gurus live for ever
Wonderful. My humblest pranams. No other words to say.
What a rendering ... no words to explain. In fact, I was told that BMK had sung this in front of Vasudevacharya, and the composer was astonished by hearing.
Sir
Thank you so much for your hard work in bringing many vintage collections of MBK. I follow you regularly on UA-cam as well as on Sangeethapriya. I like to read your explanation and notes on every video clip. You can bringout a book on such collection of notes - you being a regular follower of his concerts for a long time.
Yes.. I too agree with your points on repeated requests of Rasikas.. But what can be done.. This is true with every musician...Even with Veena Chittibabu those days every one wants Kukoo song on veena in every concert !!! Some songs get life and become popular in such sweet voices like Nagumomu is synonymous to MBK so is Devadi Deva. Probably MBK would have sung another great song in Abheri by Vasudevachari viz. Bhajare Manasa. Or Rave Himagiri Kumari in Todi by Syama Sastry which could have touch and melt your heart. Many More were expected... like Kaddanu variki, Dwaitamu Sukham, Mohana Rama, Raju Vedale Jutamu Rare, and many more Reethi gowla and Todi Krithis.....It would have set a benchmark indeed.
Please continue the service for many rasikas who are following you.. May god give good health to continue this service...
Thanks for your note. Appreciate your support and kindness.
"... requests made by the listeners or organizers repeatedly, ..."
Very true! I have heard him telling organizers, over an open microphone, to organize two concerts - one in which "I will sing what you want and in the other I will sing what I want." He even offered a good bargain, "You can pay me only one-and-half times."
Not a single sabhā seems to ever taken him up on that absolutely spiffing offer! More is the loss to us all!
I keep wishing that, as a teenager when I heard him making that offer, I had had a lot of money ...
*sigh* If wishes were horses, etc.
Are we as rasikas spoilt by listening to his famous hits over again?
Yes.. Rendition by others sometimes feel bland given Dr.BMK has explored it so deeply in repeated rendtions
Why weren't we unable to appreciate his vast repertoire and why did we demand the famous hits?
Sad part, we could have enjoyed BMK render ragas like KedaraGowla or Begada, many others in expansive form. I'm sure our experience of such ragas would have been richer had we listened to murali ganam
If you ran a sabha and wanted him to render rare songs, what would they be?
This list would be big, better to leave it to master himself..
"It is UKS on mridangam not Tanjore Upendran."
Thanks. I can't tell the difference among instrumentalists' styles. :(
+Chandra Shekhar Balachandran Very well said. Once in Toronto, he said , "All the songs were requests. Not even one was planned by me." Sad state of affairs.
Chandra Shekhar Balachandran i attended one such concert where BMK made that statement. This was at Fort higj school bangalore during Rama navami l.
Still waiting for an elaborate Kedaragowla, Begada, Madhyamavathi etc by Dr BMK
I always believe that Dr. Balamuralikrishnagaru is superhuman and his renditions are Devine and supernatural. God has sent this creative genius to this planet to display, demonstrate and educate us about music. Can't explain beyond this. Thanks a ton to Sri sreenivas Murthy garu for unleashing these treasures of music collections to the rasikas. Let God continue to bless you and your family,Sir.
Thank you for sharing your reflections and good wishes.
I have become mad of his rendition of devadu deva.since many years I am listening to this song. No words to explain by me.only deaths can explain
Satyanarayana
Only devatas can explain
sir what a great service you are doing to the rasikas of this carnatic music. also what blessed souls who attended this live concert along with it's great composer Shri Mysore vasudevacharaya. the violin of M S Gopalakrishan had added the grandeur to this great function
Outstanding raga bhava and devotion …..
Happy to hear this beautiful rendering of sri m balamuralikrishna garu
Very very nice
Very excellent composition
My namaskarams to u sir, I Heartfully convey blessings from God to bothof u Sri murthy sir and BMK sir...
Remarkable service to music world and future musicians by uploading such rare concerts sir,!thanks.
Impeccable rendition. Evokes joy & Bhakti.
Awesome, Dr BMK & MSG & TPU 🙏🙏🙏
This is most favourite song of mine&raga
Thanks a million Sri Murthy Garu! 🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏 Two gandharvas came to the earth due to a saapam and gone back to heavens! Never ever there will be another Balamurali and M S Gopalakrishnan👏👏👏
Msg prooves beyond doubt his ability to be at par with Bmk
Msg playing is ideally a mirror image of Bmk
Superb trio
Devadideva...........here master among masters............Facing picture is also so beautiful Murthy sir.........
A great combination: great composer's creation sung by a great musician and accompanied by a great team !!
Thank you very much murthy garu for the wonderful one... I was one of the fortunate few to attend a concert by the legend in 1999 in chennai supported by Mysore Manjunath...he sang the same ...
Thank you for the treasure trove . . Especially also loved the pictures of the artistes and composers
Lord Himself would have certainly been in the audience.
Just beautiful!
Simply beautiful !
I was fortunate enough to be present at this concert. I enjoyed every nuance of this raga. MSG was equally pleasing in presenting the raga - Hindustani equivalent of Hindol. Good to hear after many years. Thanks for posting, Murthy garu.
sir before you say pl ensure that they are facts hindolam is nowhere near sundavinidini which is one swaram less than hamsanandi which belongs to damanaasram school. rasikas like you have brought classical music to walltax road
Where was this concert held?
@@natarajanjagadhisan1693 : Sir, please note that Hindol and Hindolam are as different as chalk is from cheese. The Hindustani raga Hindol which Sri Arun Chidambaram was alluding to is indeed the exact equivalent of Sunadavinodini.
The Carnatic Hindolam has an equivalent called Malkauns
Again, what on earth is Damanasramam, do you mean the 53rd mela Gamanashramam?
It is you who needs to check whether you are standing in Walltax Road, whatever you mean by this most divine statement!
Superb unmatchable
Beautiful video
Great! Composition and the rendering are simply superb...thanks for uploading the best out of many such kucheris...
Thank you so much sir for the services you are doing in educating the next generation
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reflections.
This was a fantastic performance! The most remarkable thing about the song was MSG playing a response after the long round of swarakalpana by BMK with only percussion responding to BMK chain like build up.
btw, I am not sure but I think it was UKS on the mridangam.
Srinivasa Murty garu, Due to corona menace, our visit to my village Munganda is deferred to Next year’ Ganesh Navaratri festivities of 2022’. We can visit konaseema next year when national health system improves. God bless all !
Thank you for your note. We shall do as proposed.
Another Balamurali and Msg will never be born again!

Many thanks to Sri Srinivasa Murthy garu. You have unearthed a great treasure for us. From my childhood I have been listening this song from the great exponent, once in a live concert at Anantapur itself duriing 1973 or so. Thank you Murthy garu once again.
Scintillating Sir
BMK. Best Musician(of) Karnatic (music)
న భూతొ న భవిష్యతి
Listening to this rendition and your description as narrated by the composer if this Kriti Sri Vasudeva Acharya equating his composition to a poor girl returning home with lots of wealthy ornaments for delivery to her maternal home. This reminds me of the stanza 'నే చేసిన పూజా ఫలమో నా పూర్వజుల పుణ్య ఫల మో ' అన్నట్లు ఉంది నాకు. Many thanks Murthy Garu 🙏
He was referring to MS rendering Brochevarevarura. Not this.
Overwhelmed! Out of the world creativity, melody and presenetation by God of Carnatic Music! Thank you Sreenivasa Murthy ji.

Dr Bmk is the brother of Thayagaraju,
It is gift of God butt now a days singers come fr show,
A thousand comes in but Dr.Bmk stands in no 1
I revisited this upload today, and was struck once again by the sheer brilliance and sweetness of this song and performance. Your notes are full of just the kind of information that helps a listener sharpen her experience of the piece and provide all the necessary background knowledge that brings the song closer to the heart and mind. I must also say your uploads are received by excellent ears indeed because the comments section often continue the educational experience that begins with your notes. I must therefore thank you as well as those who record their knowledge and appreciation in the comments section. You must think of publishing your notes in some form at some point of time, perhaps.
Thanks for sharing your reflections. It is heartening to note that it is reaching the excellent ears, our distinguished rasikas.
Also thanks for your revisit to this upload, which I also did after reading your inspiring note.
@@SreenivasaMurthy I am touched that you too heard this miracle of a performance once again. One can clearly feel how inspired the accompanying artists were by the maestro here. Balamuralikrishna not only always gives us his best--even in his last concerts, in fact, though his voice was failing him--but also inspires everybody else to find out the best in themselves and share it with others. Not only his fellow artists, but dedicated rasikas like you. He is indeed like a force of nature, inspiring and inspired. Thanks once again for your efforts, especially your wonderfully selfless spirit of sharing and caring.
Good try. I appreciate your hard work in bringing out the best for us. But the stereo effect brings out the rhythm side in a more pronounced way. Though the sheen of the original rhythm is lost, this is the best we can get from a 1966 katcheri. Thank you.
BMK IS ALWAYS DIFFERENT
SWARA VINYASA IS DIFFERENT PRESENTED

What a scintillating kriti... One observation is that the Mridangam typically sounds like UKS sir and not like Tanjore Upendran sir... I am sorry if I am wrong in this observation
You might be right. I have no authentic information about the mridangam artiste except what has been tagged / written on the spools.
MSG true to himself has just ripped it off... gone are those days
God bless you Murthy garu for sharing the joy of listening to Sri MBK’s madhura ganamulu.
Thank you. You have the divine blessings as well.
