To “the movie Coco “it’s my life! You already had yours!“ It’s kind of the same with Emily. She already lived her life and had her chance to live happily ever after. It wasn’t the best life. It wasn’t the most romantic life. Hell, it wasn’t even the happiest life. But it was still HER life, And she lived it to the best of her ability. After realizing her mistakes, and making up for them so beautifully, she passed on into heaven, finally at peace. That makes Emily’s ending the best ending of all.
I really liked Emily, I wish she could have gotten a happy ending but I'm happy that she was finally able to get closure and to go in peace 🕊️🕊️ 😭😭 It was still a great movie though!
well ye know... victorian (pun intended, i wonder ifthe name choices were intentional) england...quite dreary , and had that industrial revolution coal based smog that made everything a bit ... greyer ;)
@@galadballcrusher8182 You're not wrong, also back then the pale tone of skin was beautyful. Candles/lamps burn out fresh air + corset (you can't breathe properly) = pale as dead. No wonder why after hard dance they often loose consciousness
@@liyarose320 why wouldn’t it be? As living people we let fear stop us from being true to ourselves. Once you’re dead, the west is already happened to you. There is nothing to fear and therefore nothing stopping you from pursuing and finding joy.
Another small detail I loved was when Emily is saying her vows, you can see the tears start to well in her eyes. They start as tears of happiness, of getting married, then when she sees Victoria they turn to ones of guilt and conflict. You can see the struggle she experiences when she starts thinking about what she wants and what's really the right thing to do. It's a small detail that I've always loved!
I have to say something... On the "other woman" scene (14:50), the hardest thing is both are Right. Victor Is married to Emily, so Victoria is the "other woman" But also, Victor has a point, it's not going to work, and doesn't have to do with her eye alone, or even Victoria and having been bethroded to her. He's still alive while Emily isn't. And more than a mistake, marriage with Emily was an accident. On his defense, I think he didn't choose the right words and actually meant "I would never marry a corpse, you or any other". And he's right, who would do that? He has never been socially skilled, much less with the ladies... Script is too damn good
Victor was betrothed to Victoria before he even met Emily, it was THAT wedding which he was preparing and practicing for. When he said the vows, it was Victoria he was thinking of-- and which inspired him to say them so well. *_He had no idea Emily was even there._* (plus, as it turns out, their marriage was not considered valid anyway, since death had already parted them). Don't get me wrong-- I LOVE Emily, she is amazing, and deserves so much more than she ever got. But as I see it... Victor is right. In this situation, Emily _is_ the Other Woman.
Fun fact, the animation in this movie was so good that people that people thought it was computer animated! Tim Burton was so ticked off by that, he purposefully dialled it back with Frankenweenie to show that it was stop motion 😆
i love the piano duet, they have a full conversation through the keys, from victor stating his apology to emily not wanting to hear it untill she finally talks back to victor.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but the piano playing is accurate, the way they would research and rehearse these scenes it’s almost exact. Just amazing cinematic and stop motion work!
Absolutely got to love how in the Land of the Dead, the colors are more bright and vivid than the living. Also it's hard not to feel for Emily and all she went through. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter who plays Emily did a great job
This movie came out in 2005. I was in 10th grade then. I can't believe it's been that long. I remember seeing this in theaters and absolutely LOVING it. I still think it would make an amazing live stage show. An absolute classic.
I was an animation major in college. One whole class was all stop-motion. We worked in paper cutouts, sand, plasticine, and meat. Probably something else I forgot.
This movie does take place in Victorian England (1837 - 1901) so arranged marriages were the norm at the time. It wasn't until recent decades that people got married out of love, for most of Human history marriages were more of a business transaction or political move.
Apparently the stop motion was so impressive in this film, people actually thought it was CGI which really bugged Tim Burton so much that he purposely made sure his next stop motion film, Frankenweenie would be shot in different quality to make sure people understood it was stop motion.
Since Tim Burton directed this, it would've been fun if he put in "two blinks and you'll miss him" cameos by a character that looks like Beetlejuice in the scene where the Jazz Skeleton is singing at 9:22. Just "Not Beetlejuice" turn to the camera/deadizen to say "Oh! This 'ill be good cause it's show it!" then the song starts with him joining the chorus.

Two things about the corpse bride never cease to amuse me. 1) The spider and the maggot being the kind of friends ready to absolutely trash a girl they've never met 2) The fact that Victoria watched Victor as he was about to marry a literal corpse and then still decided to marry him. Like homegirl was really ready to be the second choice of a necrophiliac.
First of all it's not "necrophilia" if he was about to kill himself before they could be uh... intimate. Secondly, Victoria wasn't "second choice." If anything, Emily was. The second he was able to go back to the Land of Living, he went straight to her room and told her he still wanted to marry her. However, once he found out she was getting married off to Lord Barkis, he agreed to actually marry Emily and become a corpse because he felt sorry for her and the woman he wanted to be with was no longer available.
I loved this movie as a kid, even when Emily’s introduction scared my soul out of my body for a few seconds. And I instantly recognized Helena Bonham Carter’s voice ever since I heard her voice from her role as Bellatrix in Harry Potter.
