The thing with the parents is the movie tells us a lot of things without stating them Them moving out to the pink palace where it's a shared building, maybe they lost their previous home Paying the delivery guy a 1 dollar tip, showing they have financial issues The mom's neck being covered and her mentioning an accident Them being overstressed by the publication of the book Even the meal seemed cheap which Coraline complained about And later the dad's dropped at a Gardening store probably to find an opportunity for their book Etc All that paint a pretty different picture, they seem neglectful but they're especially stressed out and in a dire situation After the book plan worked they're way more chill and you can see how they usually are with their daughter when gardening
I think the mice that warned Coraline away from the door and the mice that enticed her in were different mice. This is worth many rewatches, there is a lot of subtle details and foreshadowing in every scene. Like the fact that the Other Mother never eats at meals.
Yeah but if you look really closely at the mice taking them to the door I swear they had button eyes to, my eyes might be playing tricks on me but I swear I saw it
Someone made a correlation that some of the color choices for the buttons were paint names that had something toxic in them at one point. (I don’t know if it’s fully true though but it was an interesting concept I ran across.)
One of my favorite movies ever. The parents have moved to be physically closer to a place they can get work (they create the garden catalogue and the dad goes in person to shop it around/turn it in) and where there is more affordable housing. On the way there they get into an accident and in america that costs $$$, and the mom had to deal with her injuries therefore making them lose a day or two so they're now behind schedule. They're working constantly with little money, trying to get things finished in time, so Coraline is on her own and the house isn't even set up properly (almost everything is still in boxes, only Coraline's room is somewhat set up) and they are unable to pay attention to Coraline at the moment. My mom was the same way, very busy working when we first moved and I had a lot of time to myself since it was the beginning of summer and I knew no one. Coraline has to entertain herself and find things to do every day but once her parents turn in the catalogue and know they will have money coming in, they lighten up and relax and can spend more time with Coraline. They're not bad parents, just stressed and busy.
I got to see a museum exhibit of the Laika movies and the Coraline section was amazing. A full version of the Pink Palace, several dolls and costumes (some hand knitted) and even the hands from the start of the movie which are almost human sized.
I believe they only did the other father’s song. Neither John Flansburgh or John Linnell, the two head members of TMBG, voiced in Coraline. I believe the man you’re thinking of is John Hodgman. I do understand the mistake though, they sound very very similar LOL
All the knitwear, including Coraline's tiny gloves, were hand knitted by the absolutely incredible artist Althea Crome using thin sewing needles to knit with. As a knitter, i find the fingers of normal adult human sized gloves to be incredibly fiddly and too small to work comfortably. Althea made multiple sets of those gloves down to about 1 inch long.
Coraline is a great movie. I used to be scared of it when I was young, but after watching it years, it's actually pretty funny. The Beldam is a dark villain. It reminds me of La La Loopsy dolls I had 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣
And there she lullèd me asleep, And there I dreamed-Ah! woe betide!- The latest dream I ever dreamt On the cold hill side. I saw pale kings and princes too, Pale warriors, death-pale were they all; They cried-‘La Belle Dame sans Merci Thee hath in thrall!’
Love Coraline! When my step-siblings are a bit older I'm thinking of reading the book for them. Also, Indi, your outfit is really cool! I definitely see the Coraline inspiration, but it is also really good without that knowledge
I recently saw the remastered version of Coraline in 3D in theaters recently. It was definitely worth the extra cost on the tickets, the 3D version was so good.
6:38 i havent read the book so i'm not sure but i read a comment saying that's a callout to the fact his character was added to the movie and didnt exist in the book or something like that. Would need some fact checking on that one. 1:17:02 Yeah exactly
ANOTHER suggestion for a reaction is Sandman. I realize Gaiman has been sent to the corn field, but it's still an amazing work with a lot of people who aren't awful making an amazing show.
The parents seem really awful for most of the movie, but it's the unreliable narrator of a child's perspective. After watching the movie many times, it's clear the parents are under ENORMOUS pressure and are stressed past their tolerance, and you have a bored kid who is upset about moving away from everything. Through that lens, a lot of the earlier unpleasantness is quite reasonable. We aren't seeing anyone at their best. And that's the seductive lie of the Beldam; nobody can have an idyllic life at all times, and you can't just run away when things hit bumps. Also, predatory people thrive on finding people in these rough times.

The ones who lead her to the door were the other mothers sand filled rats i belive (the cat killed one of them)

@@mickhaiahlewis6853 I think they do in the movie but in the book they don't and they imply that they work for an older being than even the Beldam

That's so cool if it's true!
35:38 i am no 100% sure, but i think they are not sisters, but a couple (neil gaiman said so or something) so... lets go lesbians!!! powercouple
Definitely not sisters. I think they're in a "Boston marriage."
"Miss Spink and Forcibel" Different surname and both NOT Mrs. Definitely not sisters
Yep, they are a romantic couple.
The voice of the cat is the inestimable Keith David. LOVE THAT GUY
(And just got to where Sputnik mentioned aaayyyy)

I saw that exhibit as well. I was surprised at how big the Coraline-face garden was. It was all very cool!
Woah that's awesome!
The Other Father is voiced and sung by the lead singer of They Might Be Giants.

I love it when Indi dresses up. It's giving "I'm Barbie and he's just Ken".
One thing that's neat on a rewatching is noticing how the Other Mother's shape slowly changes through the movie (until it changes super dramatically)
