Basically the story in the video is that Michael believes his girl is cheating on him because he found a business card that has the name "Alex" on it. Turns out that she's a high class call girl who has her appearance changed for each of the clients and she introduces herself with the cards, everytime she uses a different name. At the end of the video, she tries to run away to Michael but he's found out what she really is and abandons her, forcing her to go back. So you nailed it!
I think the reason why he wasn't dancing is that is actually a very sad song

I understand you Seph this is definitely my 2nd favorite of the album, only Will You Be There takes the cake, but it is just so heartbreaking 😢😢 you can actually hear the sadneas in his voice, even his famous "hee hee" sounds sad, Michael have always suffered from deep loneliness because of his success and fame, not knowing who he really could trust, who were actually his friends, thankfully he had a few, but he said on a private tape without knowing he was being recorded that he just wanted to know what a normal relationship felt like, whenever he tried to date someone they always ended up just using him or leaving him 😭 he spoke a little bit about this in his book, check out this little quote:

It is the fifth single,it was written and composed by Jackson and produced by both Jackson and Bill Bottrell. It is a tale of a heartbreak over a lover’s infidelity/betrayal. The song is about a man whose woman is cheating on him and he wants to know with whom and why. It is a love song. In the music video which was released in 1993, which is directed by David Fincher the music video was filmed in Los Angeles, California and the helicopter scene in the music video was filmed at the Neverland Ranch. Michael appears as a betrayed lover, whose girlfriend portrayed by English model Yasmin Le Bon is cheating on him but he doesn’t know with whom. At first, MJ finds a card with the name Alex written on it (which could be male or female). He initially thinks his girlfriend cheats on him with a guy named Alex, hence the lyrics who is it, is it my brother, is it a friend of mine? . Later on, MJ along with his loyal servant go to his girlfriend’s place , on his way to her home, MJ’s car literally crosses paths with the truck that carries his girlfriend, and her pimps, which reveals the proximity of the two characters, who are sadly so close but yet so far away. At her home he finds a bunch of other cards with different female names on them and that’s when it hits him that his girlfriend is a prostitute. The name DIANA is on one of the cards, on whom Michael had a huge crush, meaning that he was actually betrayed by Diana. The name “Diana” was deliberately used by the director. The song is about Diana Ross, like “Dirty Diana”, and “Remember the Time”. Arguably, she was the love of his life. In the video “Who Is It?” Michael’s girlfriend regrets what she has done and escapes from her bosses in order to go back to MJ, but only to find out she is not welcome any more. Then having nowhere else to go she returns to her pimps. In the end both MJ and his girlfriend go on with their lives but they are both devastated and torn apart. It is a sad story for MJ and his girlfriend as they both loved each other very much. In the video MJ portrays perfectly the agony and despair of a hurt and betrayed man, you can feel his pain all over. Two music videos were released in 1992 as part of the promotion to the song. Jackson sadly didn't preform "Who Is It" live at any of his world concert tours. However, he did perform a small segment of the song in his interview with Oprah Winfrey in early 1993. An instrumental portion of the song was supposed to be played during the "This Is It" comeback concerts in London. Very personal, insightful, sad, traumatic… written and composed by Michael himself, it leaves no room for doubt- he was going through some stuff at the time. No its not that he didn't like his lower voice, and honestly even videos with his lower voice still sounds like his high voice still soft ALOT of the clips are edited. He choose to use his high voice in public to protect his voice from damage
I hate when people try to say his high voice was "fake", it was his voice his voice was ALWAYS soft he was always soft spoken, all of his siblings are as well, not just him, they got it from their mother, he just had an amazing vocal range, that is undeniable

also seph no one said either watch the audio or watch video but I've always thought you should watch for example the audio with lyrics then afterwards watch the video if there is one to the song then go to the next song on the album but this is the way you've decided.

What to do if you cannot dance to a slow song (have in mind all the energy Michael puts into his dancing!)? You're right, there's not much going on in this video here, but think about 'she's out of my life', 'human nature' or 'Liberian girl' (and more to come like ''stranger in moscow', 'you are not alone'), they're all slow songs and that's why they needed more storyline in their vids. Let me say Mike was pretty clever when it came to performing slow songs on stage!
The "who is it? Is it my brother?" line is believed to be referred to Whitney Houston. It is widely rumored that they had a romance after she came to the neverland ranch in the bad era. Only after did michael find out she actually slept before with Jermaine, his older brother (a confirmed fact). And that was the first album released after that happened so🤷🏽♂️ there were alot of rumors at that time that he dreamed about marrying her

Critics at the time were calling it another Billie Jean and said it was a haunting masterpiece. I love how MJ made music the way he wanted it and he didn’t stick with one style. This was the first CD I got. Christmas 1992 we got our first CD player that if you barely bumped the table it skipped (I think I still have it) and each of my brothers and I got a CD and this was mine.

You can feel the melancholy, the despair and sadness in his voice. Like Billie Jean and Dirty Diana, Who Is It is a musical nervous breakdown as only Michael can perform it.
I completely disagree with you about the video. I think it perfectly emphasizes the melancholic character of the song, the darkness and resignation with its unique Gotham City Art Deco look, the golden brownish tone and the classy ambience.
The director was David Fincher. He deliberately didn't want to show Michael dancing in a superstar costume, but to match the wealthy surroundings he was to be manly, a dandy, and highly respectable.

The best video. I have been listening to and watching Who is It at least three times a week for 20 years. The video is not easy to understand. It is about a luxury call girl who is his (Michael's) girlfriend and she keeps slipping into new roles. Sometimes blonde, sometimes dark-haired. And she has different "stage names" for her customers. He finds out what she is doing and leaves town while she wants to talk to him and tell him that she can stop, but he is already gone. The boss and her boss are very disappointed in her at the end and he arrives at his new home and the final scene shows how he builds a new life for himself. The pillars represent this. The video is by David Fincher (the Game, Fight Club, Panic Room, Seven). If you don't understand the video, don't say it's bad! It is a very difficult video to understand. But the colors and extremely good staging are unique. Who else makes music videos like this? That's right. Not at all. Greetings from Hamburg. Germany.

This song is sad 😢 La Toya had released a book about growing up with the Jacksons in 1991, and on one recording he said "it's like what La Toya said in her book, either I'm gonna have to find someone who doesn't know who the heck I am (which was not an option sadly), or someone whose career is equally as big as mine", he sounded sad cause he was already in his 30s and couldn't find love :( I think that's why he married Lisa Marie in 1993, she was already famous and didn't have ulterior motives, others just wanted to use him for his money or whatever else

What a fire song, I hope you react to his interview with Oprah at one point, he does beat boxing of this song and sings a little acapella, by the way the whole structure of all his songs came out of beat boxing and making sounds with his mouth, directly out of his head, on the album version you can hear it at the end, this man was an actual genius! Unfortunately there isn't many interviews talking about his creative process, anyway this is one of my favorite songs, this is where the album really starts get great for me!

Film director David Fincher says in an interview (here on YT) that Michael told him three days after the start of filming that he no longer wanted to take part in the video. Michael felt uncomfortable with the idea of a prostitute. For religious reasons, Michael no longer wanted to be in the video. The video was completed with an impersonator.
According to Karen Faye (Michael's make-up artist) David Fincher was arrogant and aggressive towards Michael. So he didn’t want to be a part of it anymore why he can hardly be seen in the video.
But I totally understand Seph the rhythm is very contagious and Michael's harmonies are heavenly 😍 can't wait for you to react to Will You Be There, it is the ultimate definition of a masterpiece!! My favorite from this album ❤❤❤
Th sing is fantastic and the video basically tells the story its supposed to. While theres not choreography or mind-blowing special effects every shot is visually stunning, though jts nit as fast paced or busy as some of his others.
Knowing all i know my oersonal opinion was this song was written about Whay happened with Diana Ross in the 80's. He mentioned in his autobiography he was upset about her getting married without telling him and didnt enjoy having to pretend to be happy for her marrying this guy hed never heard of. Its confirmed in the Glenda Tapes that he had some sort of relationship with Diana Ross, and theres all sorts of bits and pieces of informational puzzle pieces you can find throughout the years in old magazine and news articles and video clips if youre a fan long enough to dig that deep. Also plenty if his songs point to it. I think this one he probably started writing in the bad era if i had to guess but probably held it back for whatever reason back then. It is a fantastic song, and i do believe he really eent through the emotions in the song. Theres a bit of whisperd crying burried in the track towards the end thats really interesting when isolated

I was also disappointed when I saw this video first after it was released. But the song is one of my top 3 on the album besides Give In To Me and Will You Be There.
Speaking of Will You Be There... Please don't react to the video which is on the MJ YT channel, because that's "only" the video to the Free Willy Movie which the song was the soundtrack of. @@SephPlays ooooh yes thats great. Then please give them a go. You nustve heard of them, korean 7 boy boy band. I think you'll love them, if you like MJ as in the entertainment factor! You'll get drama, amazing mvs, amazing choreography and of course the rap line and vocal line are on point and there live shows are brilliant. They also have solo songs and their own solo albums. If you do do a reaction try out these three songs first in my opinion. Dynamite, Mic Drop and Black Swan. It covers different genres and eras.
Currently they're all doing service in the military. But couple of them will finish this year.

@@SephPlaysDefinitely not. This was actually one of the last videos to be released from the Dangerous album in late 92. Usually you'll notice once Michael has done 3 or 4 videos for the bigger singles on an album he starts to get tired of appearing in them and takes more of a back seat (Liberian Girl for example). Also, I think Michael was trying to appeal to a more mature audience plus this was a much more melancholy, ballad type of song so would've been a little weird to have an elaborate dance sequence in it.

Well, this can be interpreted in different ways, wouldn't you say? (A very long comment follows.)
For one, as far as we know, the character that MJ plays, can know his girl as Alex. All the other cards are found in a draw in "MJ's" house/apartment, so obviously "MJ" has somehow found out that this girl goes under different identeties. I don't really know why people say he thinks she's cheating on him (unless he thinks she's keeping the cards of those she sleeps with as trophies or something, but that's a bit farfetched). Yes that's in the lyrics, but alot from the lyrics doesn't fit the short films exactly - the short films are an artistic expression of the song, not the visual of the lyrics as a manuscript.
Not necessarily so, that the character that MJ plays, dumps her because of being a call girl.
Can also be read as the MJ character doesn't know she's a call girl but dumps her because of finding out she's using different identities or for being false/not knowing who she really is. "MJ" not knowing what to think has the rug pulled from under him, feeling as if he must be played/used, etc. A theme easy to extract from the real MJ's life.
Or he gets she's a call girl and understands someone is paying her to be with him, not knowing why or who or to what end. An more extreme litterary composition on the above mentioned theme.
Remember the prototype of Truman in the movie the Trueman Show, was originally buildt on MJ in the directors mind. Think about that for a moment. That's how extreme MJ's life was with people trying to manipulate him in different ways for differens reasons. Some known, some suspected, some will never come to light.
The other scenario is "MJ" knowing she's a call girl and that's how they met and she's promised "MJ" to leave that behind and build a future only with him. Now he's found out she hasn't...
Although it turns out in the end, she did choose him, but then he's already given up, from the discovery of the first or second scenario, and left.
Plus...I always get the feeling that "MJ" waits for her, is torn whether to leave or wait longer, then giving up - leaving? Am I the only one who reads it like that? The doorman/caretaker/security guard/friend or whoever it is, who sees "MJ" being in distress and finds out the woman is not who she sais/untrustworthy or has paid lip service to "MJ"; is the one who gives her the cold shoulder, out of loyalty to MJ. Without asking her or listening to her story, which means
