My grandma taught elementary school there in the 1940s. The playground on the water is where my siblings and I played as babies through the 90s. My first memories are of the beautiful Lake Superior coastal rocks, sands and blue waters. Sounds of the waves, like the ocean to a baby and seagulls ever so curious what humans brought to eat. The brickwork on the buildings downtown are spectacular. Comparable to Winona MN old town.

That old movie theater on Washington was the first theater i ever went to. I watched Tim Burton's Batman there back in the 80s. It was the place to be when it was up and running. Many memories.

Was sorry to see that The Delft Theater is no longer a theater.
In 1978 I took a solo vacation in the UP and spent a couple of days in Marquette. Star Wars was still in the theater and I went twice to see it.
Took my state nursing boards in Marquette too and did more exploring. Lovely area.

I live in Marquette (by Marquette Mountain) and you definitely aren’t wrong about its beauty. I often brag that I live in the most gorgeous part of America.

My mom and her friends used to sunbath on top of the dock in the lower harbor back in the 70s.

Any recommendation if I should visit marquette or mackinaw city? I want to visit one of the place from Kalamazoo for a two day trip. Particularly I am hoping to watch Aurora. This will be my first trip to UP as I am an intersnational student. I will mostly be using public transport.

    • @shivaagarwal4093

@XxCherriesxx An update, I finished the trip and came back this Saturday. I went to Marquette using public transport and the journey was great. I took train and bus to get there. Once there, I used local bus and Eric (the bus driver) showed me the town. The bus still use printed tickets! I stayed at Superior stay hotel and it was perfect.
I went to Munising to see the pictured rocks and it only took $14 to get there using Altran. Gallery coffee is a must. Also fish and chips are great.
I think Marquette is the most beautiful place in Michigan and maybe in the whole US.
PS: I could not see Aurora as it was cloudy. Maybe this sets me up for one more trip there!

Black Rocks is a bore. Its only about a 10 to 15 foot drop. Good for the kids i suppose.
I know a better cliff to jump off of, Its a little over a 100ft and its a trip! Its over near Munising.

@@laurenshipk3y It's been a while since ive jumped off Black Rocks. It could be 20 ft, i cant remember.
Its always packed around that area with people. I tried finding a spot to park at where you watch the sun sets (Sun set point?) a few days ago and its always impossible to get. Even when you arrive an hour early lol.
I wish they would widen that parking area up, so more vehicles could park there. Nice island though.
I remember when there was a zoo there and they had bears and tigers. The raccoons and the deer would walk up to you and you were allowed to feed and pet them. That was a while back.

One of the stupidest things you will ever do is jump off the Black Rocks into Lake Superior. The water is extremely cold and takes your breath when you hit it. People have drowned, some jump incorrectly and become paralyzed…it is much more dangerous than it appears. People die from hypothermia just wading in Lake Superior. Sorry, but this video should not be so lighthearted as to the dangers of this area. Enjoy it there, but be educated.

This video is a little out of date.
Jean Kaye's has been closed for a while.
A whole bunch of different new tourist taxes are coming on line like a new motel tax and not to mention the talk of making all the toilets in the touristy area's pay toilets. Come back by all means but bring extra money for all the new taxes and fees coming up.

I visited Marquette once, I loved it personally, but in regards to the meth problem over there, don’t worry it’s going to go away eventually, cause it’s only a matter of time until they all get arrested. I know cause I live in a small mountain town that had that same problem and eventually the tweakers will just leave, because they love to hide and when they run out of places to hide they’ll move. They may not move out of the UP but they will move out of Marquette, cause once the police know about them and have them on record they’ll get tired of the harassment.

I'm from Marquette too and whether this is fun is a matter of opinion - but for me the beaches, hiking, fishing, skiing, etc doesn't get old or boring. (But winter can get VERY cold and gray, which can be difficult some times). If someone likes a big city or clubs then they might think it's boring. I also lived in Vegas for 7 years and i'd take nature over man made fun now that i've had both. / Meth is a problem in general, horrible drug. Not sure if there is more or less than elsewhere. A bigger a town gets tho the more nonsense starts happening.

It’s nice in the summer, but the winters are brutal, and last longer than downstate. BTW, even in August, the water in Lake Superior is damn cold.
