      @@FarFromOrdinary my oldest son was born on Dec 1 1976 in the Laurium hospital. There was 2 feet of fresh overnight snow on 11/31 and another foot on 12/1. There were no doctors on duty that night in maternity. Two healthy babies born that night thanks to a busy nurse and one dad. Doctor came in after both were in mom's arms and declared them both healthy.
      Another note. I am still amazed by the UP. The drive north of calmet to copper harbor was cool. On place had a shear cliff to the west and pine trees to the east in a hilly area. Then the ride back on the west side . truly memorable.
      Nice video but only a part.

    Years ago, at the top of the Brockway Mountain Drive, there used to be a small gift shop/weather station; the Lake Superior side of the parking area had a couple of pay-to-use 25¢ binoculars, for viewing the ore ships and Isle Royale. The monastery's bakery is called The Jam Pot.

    I've been to these areas and they are absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Michigan's U.P. is a different world. The natural beauty of Lake Superior and it's rocky shoreline is incredible. She was able to get a job at Calumet Electronics, so she's happy. Yes, it's kind of dead there, but if it wasn't for the extreme winters, I could live there as well. They have one fast food place, Burger King. You have to admit, the UP is simply gorgeous. I was able to go in late Oct and it was already in the mid 40's during the day. To cold for me. The Devil's Washtub is "just a hole" when the lake is calm, but when the waves are thumping, it's like a geyser. Unfortunately, you were there when the lake was sleepy. And to be persnickety, it's not the northernmost point of Michigan. That's another 50 miles north on Passage Island. But true, it's the northernest on the mainland.
    There is SO much to do up in Copper Country. And not like anywhere else in the country.

I found the hiking trails to be on the rugged side as most of the Keweenaw itself is rugged! The worst part about being in the woods were the nasty bugs, but that didn’t deter us.

    My wife and I went up to the UP in 2019. Stayed at Ontonogen (sp?) Went to Porcupine mountain state park one day then drove up the Kewanee peninsula on another. I thought the towns were absolutely gorgeous. Those churches made of resident stone were beautiful. The monks place was closed when we got there. Went to Copper Harbor, toured the old fort. Drove up on the mountain where we could look over lake superior. Ate Pastys (a local meat pie), and had a wonderful time. I'm from the prairies and that much trees gives me clostraphobia but it's a beautiful area and I wished we could have spent more time there.

    I just came across your channel because I’m considering visiting Michigan this fall. I noticed you have been to SD too. Those are the 2 states that I narrowed down for my first solo trip. Since you been to both, can you tell me which one you would pick to visit again if you could?
    Just for info. I am looking for nice hikes, nothing longer than 4 miles and not too strenuous. I also, love quaint towns, cozy libraries, bakeries, good food, art from local people, fall festivals, old fashioned country/general stores, scenic drives etc

    • @FarFromOrdinary
      @FarFromOrdinary  2 роки тому +1

      Definitely Michigan; the UP in particular.
      SD is wonderful, Custer in particular. And you have Wall Drug there and the Badlands. You won't get the quaintness of a small town, but there are things to do.
      But Copper Harbor in the UP, definitely ranks up there as one of our top favorite spots. Time really slows down here. There's quite a few short hikes, and tons of shopping in Copper and Eagle Harbor. And of course those yummy bakeries! There's a culture here that's hard to replicate elsewhere.

    Nice video. I'll add a spot. High Rock Bay at the very end of the Keweenaw. Requires at least something with decent AWD like a Subaru (a Honda Civic wouldn't make it).

      Nice addition! We remember looking at that but decided against it because it was a pretty decent drive out. I think there's some kinda plaque out there for the old rocket range too.
