I saw them on this tour and they totally blew everyone away. They was opening for Dio in the UK and they were the only support band I ever saw that got an encore.
Geoff Tate was one of the very best singers in the world in the 80s. I still listen to Operation Mindcrime at least once a week. One of my all time favourite albums.
I've seen them live 3 times, I've bought their album on LP (yeah, I am that old, sue me), cd, and streamables, I've gifted this album to other people, I've bought this album like 15-16 times. There was a rock radio show in Sweden which basically announced that there is this band Queensrÿche and that the've dropped this album Operation: Mindcrime, and just shut up and aired the the entire album in one go, no announcement, no commercials, no nothing, just Queensrÿche for about an hour, uninterrupted.
I have seen Queensryche 13 times and every time have been blown away by Geoff’s voice and charisma on stage. I got the chance to meet him before a concert. I was too scared to ask for a pic with him, so somebody yelled out, “Geoff, she wants a picture with you!” He turned around and gave me one of his grins and said “ Sure” then put his arm around me! I think I went to heaven at that point, lol. Then at the concert I was about 50 feet from the stage(small venue), he looked at me once or twice and give the same grin. I swear, the best concert I have ever been to! It is too bad kids now will never know the feeling of an arena concert or even a small venue concert because of everything going on. I am so glad I grew up in the 80’s and was able to go to them.
I hate you both. I'm in WNY so saw the Headstones 3x, Tragically Hip(thankfully), and the Tea Party(fantastic)..... Filter & Everclear- both sucked. I had to work so my two best friends saw Bush, I got a sticker :(
This performance is even more amazing because it was the very last song of their set. And it was also their second concert of the afternoon, so Geoff had already been performing for almost four hours straight, with just a short break in the middle, before singing like THAT.
Geoff Tate was instructed by David P. Kyle of Seattle , the same instructor who taught the Wilson sisters of Heart and Layne Staley of Alice in Chains.
Chris Cornell was also one of David Kyle's students. Also, late vocal Instructor Al Koehn from Floida studied under Maestro Kyle. And one of Al's students was Midnight from Crimson Glory. Who has a very similar style/ sound to Tate. But at least half an octave higher. ua-cam.com/video/R0-6-eFR-ok/v-deo.html

I started using opera techniques, and it really helped me maintain my voice throughout a performance.”
I saw these guys in 1986 with a Japanese band called “loudness“ and Motley Crue. People were throwing stuff at loudness and motley did not even compare. This is from 1985 Live in Tokyo. I had this concert in VHS tape for 30 years until I misplaced it in a move. You should listen to "Roads To Madness" from the same concert
Some people are just gifted with talent being an artist comedian, actor or singer, he was gifted and no matter how hard you tried to make somebody sing like that if they can’t do it, they won’t.
Finally a real Queensryche fan....I get so sick and tired of so called “Queensrych fans” referencing Mind crime as thier masterpiece just shows their lack of fandom once I saw you state WARNING...I screamed to myself...YES!!! FINNALY SOMEONE WHI TRULY UNDERSTANDS Queensryche....don’t get me wrong mind crime was great but WARNING and RAGE....Queensrych at thier BEST I would even throw in those first “album” the EP that we in are neck of the woods call it “queen of the ryche” album befor mindcrime ..Mindcrime was (in my opinion) the beginning of thier commercialization era but still good
GFY 1 I didn’t get to see them the first time till 1986, But me and my best friend waited in the backstage area with all the hot girls. When the road manager started hooking up the girls with backstage passes, we lied and told him my older brother went to school with Scott, so he hooked us up! We were the only guys to go back. All the food and booze we could want, hung out with the whole band for over an hour, got all autographs on one of their set lists (a roadie made fun of us for not having pen and paper, so he hooked us up) Geoff bummed half a pack of smokes from me over the hour or so, and I tripped over some guys foot who was sitting talking to Chris, and it was The blond guitar player from Whitesnake. Real nice fella. Ended up watching AC/DC from the side of the stage.
GFY 1 if you look at the songs they were touring with for the ep, They had The Warning album songs finished when they did the ep. So if you view the ep and the album as one, Just a monstrous masterpiece of music with absolutely zero fill.
I saw them here in Milwaukee WI when they did the taping for the Livecrime video, just an amazing show. I just saw Geoff Tate last year when he did the 30th anniversary of Operation: Mindcrime (31st actually). His daughter is the singer of the opening band and she came out to sing the part that was done by Pamela Moore on the album which was really cool. Before all the bands started cancelling because of COVID he played Empire in its entirety to mark the 30th anniversary of that album along with Rage For Order in its entirety.
I think you've been deceived by this charlatan. Someone who loves Mindcrime 100% of the time knows of their prior releases, especially...ummmm....all of them. Because they're equally majestic. EP, The Warning, Rage for Order...
Early songs like Queen of the Reich drew me in. Later, songs like Spreading the disease, don’t ever trust the needle, and Another rainy night solidified my fandom.
jdsim9173 Oh I’m sorry if I don’t have the cassette in front of me and I forgot the exact wording of the title. Didn’t know the word police was going to question how big of a fan I am. Relax!
I am blessed to have lived during the time where four magnificent singers have "moved" not just me but others......Geoff has been my #1 since I first heard him in 1984....Layne Staley, Brent Smith and Andrea Boceli!
Mr. Tate was on another dimension with that natural voice. One of the best ever, he should had been a global sensation. I've never heard anyone sound like him.
Saw them in '03 with Dream Theater. Amazing! The duet of Comfortably Numb was great. I remember Tate getting up on stage asking us all "are you taking care of yourselves?". He obviously did and has to be able to pull this off. Both bands were quality true professionals who cared about delivering a beautiful musical experience.
I saw Queensryche a lot of time in Holland.1992 with metallica and Ac/dc.But in 1989 aardschokdag Arnhem.Operation Mindcrime tour.never seen a beter show then that.what a setlist.briljant.
This song has long been one of my favs. When they did the Rage for Order tour they did a signing at a local record store - I took THIS album instead and got it signed (I also bought Rage - great album) By pure chance I was one of the last 5 people they let in before they left so I got to chat with them for about 5 minutes as opposed to "Hi, thanks for the autograph - see you at the show". They were very friendly and engaging even though they were obviously VERY tired at this point and needed to get some sleep before the show that evening. The show was Awesome btw..:) One of the best live bands IMHO.
I have a similar story...had meet and greet passes for a show on the HITNF tour...each band member could not have been nicer, and answered each question as if it was the first time hearing it. Chris was super engaging, and Geoff just as laid back as possible. Great memory.
Perhaps a subnote to this: to all the younger guys&girls thinking "well, our generation pop-singers can sing that too"... don't underestimate the fact: NO AUTOTUNE - NO IN EAR MONITORING... just pure soundpressure pounding out of oldschool 12" speakers ... and energy on stage - still hitting all the notes and cutting through a full blasting rockband. Not to mention the rhythmic stuff this band did and does.
Love his metal voice! He’s always been a favorite of mine. Luckily, after two years waiting to see him, and crying the first time not being able to go to his show, I finally get to go tomorrow night. Happy, Happy! He’s playing at The Blue Note in Harrison, Ohio. I’m stoked! Get to see an idol that I’ve loved for a long time. Thank you for this reaction. If anything I’ll send a video of the show.
Queensryche with Tate was a real game-changer in the metal world. Mr. Tate is a great vocalist. A tip would be to check out Kings X and their song "Dogman". Doug Pinnick has a really great rock voice too...
Doug Pinnick is s a talent, no doubt, but I always thought Ty Tabor was exceptional as well. His solo on Prisoner is one of the best and most underrated I have ever heard.
I agree Geoff Tate has the most phenomenal voice, no question. He has a strong, operatic voice Gorgeous. I have been a fan of his vocals since the '80s.
Great reaction. Love this performance, and love your enthusiasm about great singing and breakdowns... informative, entertaining, and at times, funny....
I saw Queensryche in 1983 when they opened for some band called Zebra and my friends and I were just floored by Tate. The whole band was incredible. I've seen them numerous times since, but that first show is still the best.
Do a segment on Micky Thomas from Starship. He has a video on UA-cam of him singing 'Jane' in 2020. He sounds exactly as he did over 40 years ago. !!! ONE OF "THE MOST" UNDERRATED VOCALIST OF ALL TIME!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GETTING IT! You identified the exact things about Tate's performance here that are the essence of what it means to be moved by a vocal performance! You are so spot on!
I have their set list from Mindcrime that was taped on the stage. I went up after the show and had a security guy give it to me. Also have set lists from Dokken and Whitesnake
I remember catching a towel from the singer from Helloween. I thought it was the coolest thing until I got home. I had this generic towel, no band logo on it just the singers sweat. Its not something I could put in a frame or display in a cool way. “Hey Man, tell me about that towel!!!!” I ended up putting it in with my laundry and it just became another everyday towel in the bathroom. Still its cool to get something from a band to take home. I got a few guitar pics, drumsticks and other odds n ends from other shows. A much cooler souvenir than a towel lol.

Tate leaves another vocal teacher speechless .....the guy truly was the best singer when he was in his prime . Checkout any other song on this album , he kills them all .
I always thought Chris Degarmo didn't get enough credit for his background vocals. Throughout the bands history he could hold his own with Geoff Tate. Look it up
CDG was underrated all around for his vocals, guitar work with Wilton, his writing abilities, and his way to arrange songs. CDG is a rare one and a shame he doesn't get back into playing again with QR
@EccentricSage Todd La Torre is an excellent singer. Probably the best replacement for Geoff Tate from a vocal perspective. From a chemistry standpoint, Meh, when Chris left in '97 and Geoff left in '12 they took the chemistry with them. And... i just remembered the first song Geoff Tate wrote was "The Lady Wore Black"
I saw him perform the entire Operation Mind Crime album last year at a 300 seat venue and he was absolutely incredible as always! He truly has a gift 🤘
I just listened to Marco Hietala, from his new solo album, doing Song of My Father, both in English and the original Finnish. I would beg you to listen to this song in the Finnish version. Singing in his native tongue, it feels more emotional and powerful. His voice is absolutely gorgeous here....beautiful baritone.....The official video.....wonderful...
If you compare this to Silent Lucidity where you really hear his lower register, it sounds like different people singing .. not sure how many years there were between this song and Silent Lucidity, but still ...
He almost "changes" his voice in songs like "One and Only" (kind of like Paul McCartney on "Get Back"). Empire he was exploring his vocal space to new places. Especially on "Promised Land", but I missed those higher registers to accent everything.

Queensryche - Live in Tokyo might be the best metal performance ever set to video/audio, Geoff killed it 100% perfect.
This reaction about this jewel of a song is by far, the best I have ever watched .
This is from 1985 Live in Tokyo. I had this concert in VHS tape for 30 years until I misplaced it in a move. You should listen to "Roads To Madness" from the same concert
Oh man. That song. *Shivers*
It. is. so. good!
My favorite Ryche song
Some people are just gifted with talent being an artist comedian, actor or singer, he was gifted and no matter how hard you tried to make somebody sing like that if they can’t do it, they won’t.
Mindcrime is an amazing album.
The Warning is a MASTERPIECE!!!
Love that album and Rage for Order
Finally a real Queensryche fan....I get so sick and tired of so called “Queensrych fans” referencing Mind crime as thier masterpiece just shows their lack of fandom once I saw you state WARNING...I screamed to myself...YES!!! FINNALY SOMEONE WHI TRULY UNDERSTANDS Queensryche....don’t get me wrong mind crime was great but WARNING and RAGE....Queensrych at thier BEST I would even throw in those first “album” the EP that we in are neck of the woods call it “queen of the ryche” album befor mindcrime ..Mindcrime was (in my opinion) the beginning of thier commercialization era but still good
GFY 1 I didn’t get to see them the first time till 1986,
But me and my best friend waited in the backstage area with all the hot girls. When the road manager started hooking up the girls with backstage passes, we lied and told him my older brother went to school with Scott, so he hooked us up!
We were the only guys to go back.
All the food and booze we could want, hung out with the whole band for over an hour, got all autographs on one of their set lists (a roadie made fun of us for not having pen and paper, so he hooked us up)
Geoff bummed half a pack of smokes from me over the hour or so, and I tripped over some guys foot who was sitting talking to Chris, and it was The blond guitar player from Whitesnake. Real nice fella.
Ended up watching AC/DC from the side of the stage.
GFY 1 if you look at the songs they were touring with for the ep,
They had The Warning album songs finished when they did the ep.
So if you view the ep and the album as one,
Just a monstrous masterpiece of music with absolutely zero fill.
Truth
geoff an instrument , a siren an amagalm of human and hyper
Just an incredible voice and band. So damn talented and underrated band.
They really were
I saw them open for Ozzy in 86…he killed this song exactly like this.
Awesome!
Pamela Moore
My bad, thanks for the correction 👍.
No, it must be: Pamela Moore😀
Pleeeeaaassseee do Queensryche's Roads to Madness from The Warning album!
IMO Roads to Madness is Tate's finest moment!
Yes a lot of vocal Changes and excellent song
Agree....damn now its time to listen to Warning in its entirety.
"I have loved Queensryche" "It's not like I have never heard Queensryche" See, this is why your videos are great :D
I think you've been deceived by this charlatan. Someone who loves Mindcrime 100% of the time knows of their prior releases, especially...ummmm....all of them. Because they're equally majestic. EP, The Warning, Rage for Order...
Once you listen to them once
you keep tabs on them for sure
Queensryche is a band that has been very near and dear to my heart since the late 1980s. Their album Operation Mindcrime is still one of my favorite.
Early songs like Queen of the Reich drew me in. Later, songs like Spreading the disease, don’t ever trust the needle, and Another rainy night solidified my fandom.
you can't be that big of a fan, otherwise you'd know the song is The Needle Lies not don’t ever trust the needle
jdsim9173 Oh I’m sorry if I don’t have the cassette in front of me and I forgot the exact wording of the title. Didn’t know the word police was going to question how big of a fan I am. Relax!
@@jdsim9173 believe it or not its actually possible.
Let's not forget the greatest on Mindcrime: Breaking the Silence and The Mission
Exactly!!
I am blessed to have lived during the time where four magnificent singers have "moved" not just me but others......Geoff has been my #1 since I first heard him in 1984....Layne Staley, Brent Smith and Andrea Boceli!
God I LOVE GEOFF!! MY DREAM WAS TO MEET HIM AND I DID 8 YEARS AGO!!!
BEST DAY EVER!!!❤❤❤ HIS VOCALS ARE INSANE!!! EARTH-SHATTERING!
Mr. Tate was on another dimension with that natural voice. One of the best ever, he should had been a global sensation. I've never heard anyone sound like him.
Bought The Warning the week it was released. It's great to hear their musicianship being acknowledged and praised 36 years later..
Geoff was 25 in 1984 and now is 63 and still records and tours and sings well. There will never be another Geoff Tate.
Yes!! Geoff Tate Is increíble!!!
Supporting AC/DC tour. Loved Rage for Order.
Do Queen of the Reich next from the same concert. Even more impressive. Early to mid 80s Geoff Tate was incredible
@@ICBMSteve Yup. Good stuff..
Perhaps a subnote to this:
to all the younger guys&girls thinking "well, our generation pop-singers can sing that too"... don't underestimate the fact: NO AUTOTUNE - NO IN EAR MONITORING... just pure soundpressure pounding out of oldschool 12" speakers ... and energy on stage - still hitting all the notes and cutting through a full blasting rockband. Not to mention the rhythmic stuff this band did and does.
Geoff was opera trained and has an 5 Octave range. Truly the greatest, to have seen him in his prime was a rush!
Agreed!
Doug Pinnick is s a talent, no doubt, but I always thought Ty Tabor was exceptional as well. His solo on Prisoner is one of the best and most underrated I have ever heard.
Just subscribed...I've not seen so called "Vocal Coach" dissect a performance with such knowledge. This was on point!
I love Queensryche
I agree Geoff Tate has the most phenomenal voice, no question. He has a strong, operatic voice Gorgeous. I have been a fan of his vocals since the '80s.
Great reaction. Love this performance, and love your enthusiasm about great singing and breakdowns... informative, entertaining, and at times, funny....
Geoff Tate still kills it live. He sang this song as a closer last time I saw him. Powerful and ‘moving’ for sure.
Mike, even more incredible, this was the last song of their set that night! Check out their album Rage for Order if you liked this song.
Rage is awesome and it should have been more popular than what it was.
The last one was Queen Of The Reich. A more difficult song, but perfectly performed too.
@@danyelmo2831 I've seen that one too, I didn't realize it was the last song. QOTR is one of my all-time favorites along with The Lady Wore Black.
I saw Queensryche in 1983 when they opened for some band called Zebra and my friends and I were just floored by Tate. The whole band was incredible. I've seen them numerous times since, but that first show is still the best.
I remember Zebra, mostly because they were supposed to be the next big thing. Guess what, they weren’t!
Some band named Zebra? Lol. They were great!!!
Sorry to be getting to this so late! Emotion means everything when performing. I love your reactions. You are so real and honest!
Do a segment on Micky Thomas from Starship. He has a video on UA-cam of him singing 'Jane' in 2020. He sounds exactly as he did over 40 years ago. !!!
ONE OF "THE MOST" UNDERRATED VOCALIST OF ALL TIME!
Take Hold Of The Flame is my favorite Qurrnsryche song.
AFTERBURNER , listen to the Rage For Order album. Specifically the song The Whisper. 👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GETTING IT! You identified the exact things about Tate's performance here that are the essence of what it means to be moved by a vocal performance! You are so spot on!
Yeah Queensryche will never be the same with out Chris and Tate
The band and Geoff were at the TOP of their game on this tour! The BEST!
I've only got one - but Patrick Dahlheimer from Live gave it to me at a club show in Denver years back. That's a keeper!
TATE ...SET THE BAR.....
TOP SHELF!!
My Absolute FAVORITE for 30 years.
I'm Not a singer Per say BUT I know I studied Classical Music in NYC for a Decade During TATES Prime...
He is a PHENOMINAL ..
He has been been Noted as Being Barritone...
NOW he can't hit It HIGH but That is because his approach takes a toll (As Per Another Respectable Coach Spoke of) Basically There is a "shelf life" to using his voice like THAT...
AND YES he IS FREAKING INCREDIBLE...
Often Replicated NEVER EVER DUPLICATED...
TATE HAS """IT""😎👍
Geoff Tate & Queensryche live - Now THAT'S the way to start your day!! :) Mike: "It's not 'imiTATEable'"... A few weeks back, on Chase's channel (who is now a full-fledged member of the NW Army).. "He's reMARCOble". Great, cheesy quotes from 2 of the best reactors!
Both are great reactors. Many explanations, always learning something new or not realized about my favourit bands
Passionate IS TATE...He is ALL IN!!!
ALWAYS COMMITTED!!
GREAT POINTS your Making..
Tonight Is GUITAR ALL IN ...Glad I stumbled into your Vocal Coaching..
Appreciate all Your Input...
BRAVO
Just saw this in my feed and thought, “oh good God...another reaction to Take Hold of the Flame Live from Tokyo.” But I watched it anyways, because I can’t ever tire of this performance. It’s one of the greatest vocal performances of my lifetime, and I’m 51. The only other I could say that is right there is Rob Halford singing Victim of Changes on Unleashed in the East. Anyways, thank for the actual insight and analysis. I’ve always said I wish someone would break these things down and talk about what is actually being done...not just on the surface. I subscribed 👍
I loved your reaction... This performance makes me tear up its so beautiful!
Tate leaves another vocal teacher speechless .....the guy truly was the best singer when he was in his prime .
Checkout any other song on this album , he kills them all .
Hi Mike, just came back to watch this..BEST REACTION to the glory of his talent/performance. Loved it!🥰🥰🥰🥰⚡️💫☀️
Your description of a singers styles and techniques make you videos so much more informative TY
I was lucky enough to see Queensrÿche live in the early 80's. And Take Hold of the Flame blew my mind.
@@vigocountyscanner good point
@EccentricSage Todd La Torre is an excellent singer. Probably the best replacement for Geoff Tate from a vocal perspective. From a chemistry standpoint, Meh, when Chris left in '97 and Geoff left in '12 they took the chemistry with them. And... i just remembered the first song Geoff Tate wrote was "The Lady Wore Black"
I love the way voice teachers/coaches react to my favorite singers
I saw him perform the entire Operation Mind Crime album last year at a 300 seat venue and he was absolutely incredible as always! He truly has a gift 🤘
Not to forget it was an encore. And that night Geoff had already nailed 11 songs.
We need a reaction video to your reactions lol. You can see the joy and inspiration that music brings to you. Very nice to see and fun to watch.
Its the best interpretation of that song.👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I just listened to Marco Hietala, from his new solo album, doing Song of My Father, both in English and the original Finnish. I would beg you to listen to this song in the Finnish version. Singing in his native tongue, it feels more emotional and powerful. His voice is absolutely gorgeous here....beautiful baritone.....The official video.....wonderful...
Geoff Tate was untouchable in these days...and the fact this was an encore song...after all night singing to be this amazing! 🤘🏻
Your best reaction in one of the best ever songs of metal !!!
Saw Geoff this year in Australia he sounded amazing ❤️
If you compare this to Silent Lucidity where you really hear his lower register, it sounds like different people singing .. not sure how many years there were between this song and Silent Lucidity, but still ...
MalkavianScream I think Silent Lucidity is one of the most beautiful “rock” songs ever written.
It was about 6 years between albums.
Silent Lucidity is gorgeous, would love a reaction to that!
@@jasonkadlec3929 Amount of cigarettes would probably be a better measurement. And I actually still like his voice on Empire.
He almost "changes" his voice in songs like "One and Only" (kind of like Paul McCartney on "Get Back"). Empire he was exploring his vocal space to new places. Especially on "Promised Land", but I missed those higher registers to accent everything.
You what high vocals. KING DIAMOND is a must. Any song. He will blow you away! Thanks for the videos. J. J.
The Warning album is where he really lets loose in my opinion
I often wonder what that album could have been if they'd had a real metal producer like Martin Birch or Terry Date
Moreso where he still had his full voice before the cigs gradually wore it away
Vocally, best album ever made. Untouchable!
This song must be in top 10 songs in rock history. It is a hymn!
Mike you would enjoy Geoff doing Scarborough Fair, not too hard to find. He does the first chorus as a baritone and the second as a soaring tenor. !
Love his rendition of SF.
Because he's an heroic (or helden) tenor
Tate nailed it to the wall with that one.
Miljenko Matijevic, Sebastian Bach, Mike Patton, Peter Steele, King Diamond ....imho criminal underrated!!!
