  • Last month 80s MRB flew to Seattle WA. to interview Geoff with no idea what to expect. In fact we weren't even sure he'd show up. We set up at this 5 star hotel with an amazing view of the city as our backdrop and waited for Geoff. Counting down to the minutes he was supposed to arrive and then he did. In fact he arrived exactly as planned. We all introduced ourselves and told Geoff what we were hoping to get on camera. We sat him down in our famous directors chair & mic'd him up. Part 1 of this interview is almost 30 min, packed with amazing stuff. Geoff couldn't have been more generous with his stories and answers to all our questions. He spoke about writing Mindcrime, DeGarmo leaving, Scott Rockenfield, the band breaking up, a possible reunion, and so much more. Grab some popcorn, or a beer... sit back and enjoy this BRAND SPANKIN' NEW interview with our new friend... Geoff Tate. Watch for part 2!!

    • @j800r_aswell
      @j800r_aswell 2 роки тому +44

      I think this interview actually told a lot of that story if you read between the lines. Chris was a MAJOR part of the band. Chris and Geoff were the primary creative force. Geoff has always marched a little more to the beat of his own drum. More varied musical tastes. The first one with the desire to work on original material. Geoff confirmed here that Chris was somewhat of a band leader for them. I feel like he probably served as the bridge (no pun intended, but happy coincidence) between Geoff and the rest of the band. The middle-ground. The most tastes in common with Geoff while sharing more tastes with the rest of the guys at the same time. After Chris left, they'd not only lost one of their primary creative forces but also a band leader. As Geoff was always a passionate songwriter he stepped up regarding the creative side and probably attempted to steer the ship a lot himself as well.
      As time went on, decisions and directions gained less and less traction (consider one of the most appreciated post-Chris albums was probably Tribe and Chris was back in the mix for that one). Then they went and put out Dedicated to Chaos. It tanked. Hard. Far more than any other release. Geoff and the rest of the guys just weren't gelling. I feel that Geoff got scapegoated a lot for that failiure of that album. The truth was the guys just couldn't work together anymore. They had struggled to since Chris and it was a miracle they hard fought to keep it going for so long. All of this just came to a head following DtC. The split was the best thing to happen to them. The only thing I have never agreed with is the continued use of the Queensryche name. Queensryche died that day. Hell, it could easily be argued they died back when Chris left and they were fighting for their lives ever since. The rest of the guys formed a great unit with Todd and under any other name (personal opinion) could have been a fantastic and far more respectable metal band. The biggest thing being the band finally saw eye to eye on things.
      Geoff is great now with what he's going. The others have their thing going strong. I feel if they were to "reunite" at any point it would HAVE to be a complete reunion. Chris included. A single, final album. The last album to bear the Queensryche name would be my dream but a single gig or mini-tour of a very small number of select shows would be the more feasible. I don't see it happening though unfortunately. Chris is done. Especially on the touring front. Without Chris it's just not gonna happen.

    • @TheMetalPigeon
      @TheMetalPigeon 2 роки тому +5

      @@j800r_aswell Nice perspective, and yeah I agree with your summary --- your point about Chris being done and not wanting to tour is spot on, but I totally could see these guys maybe one day here getting together the original lineup just for a roundtable retrospective interview or conversation and perhaps that even leading to a Seattle area concert. Or maybe the existing QR lineup inviting all of the former members to a show for a special one-off guest thing like the Scorpions did with their old members in Wacken a few years back. One can hope anyway.

    I'm dating myself, but I vividly remember going to see Queensryche open for Kiss on their Animalize tour in 1984.
    I had already long grown out of my Kiss phase, and was obsessed with Queensryche, and their debut EP. They were amazing, and Geoff blew my mind!!🤘🤘

  • @melissavaughnvoiceoverarti6436

    A tremendous interview. I had no idea Geoff got started kind of 'by accident' as a singer. Just amazing. Also, when you hear his speaking voice, it is really quite low. A huge difference to those stratospheric high notes he reached on his albums... pretty mind-blowing tonal difference. Oh, I like his shirt, too! :-)

    Love you Geoff. Best live vocalist I've ever seen. With all that life throws at us, with all the mud-slinging and things that happen in life, nobody will ever take away the experience when I watched you perform Operation Mindcrime with the original lineup. The flood of emotions, trippin' balls, the night itself (a cold snowy November night in Denver). I'll never forget that.

      @@scottlosey4978 - that is true. The original Queensryche could get back together for a reunion tour. But realistically who's gonna care?? Queensryche is an opening band at best right now. No one's going to fund a Queensryche reunion tour. Besides. Queensryche recent album *The Verdict* is an excellent album. But say that to the purist Queensryche fans and what do they say?? Without Geoff Tate it isn't Queensryche. And right there is your problem of a reunion. Geoff Tate has split the base apart. Queensryche with Todd La Torre are basically starting over yet again after COVID destroyed their momentum after 2019's The Verdict album. Meanwhile, what's Tate talking about?? His Mind time band?? Nope. His newest release of Sweet Oblivion 2nd album 2021 Relentless?? Nope. Mind you Sweet Oblivion's 2019 debut (Sweet Oblivion) was Tate's best work since 1994's Promised Land. He's talking about the 1997 album Hear in the Now Frontier that started Queenryche spiralling out of control for a decade & 5 albums plus a covers album.
      Geoff Tate would love a reunion. Since he has nothing but a tribute Queensryche band. Chris DeGarmo basically retired. And the rest of the members are trying to bring Queensryche back from oblivion. Reunion with Tate?? Too much baggage.

    Seeing Geoff with such tactful and thoughtful introspection is refreshing as hell. I could never understand what it was like to be in any of their shoes, so I’ll simply say this was a great interview. Chris’ writing and performing is what drew me into Queensryche, and I stayed once I saw how amazing things happened with them all there. I did and do love Q2K and Tribe as well. Promised Land is in my top 10 concerts of all time, and I LOVED their evolution into HITNF. The Voice Inside has been my favorite QR song since the first time I listened to it (yeah, even above others from “those” huge albums). Wherever their paths take them, I wish them all well in their careers and their lives.

      @@davidgotteri Agreed! Their sound did evolve, and I understand some people didn’t care for that. That being said, I think it was an extraordinarily tight rock record, which was in shorter supply then, and still very powerful songs (not an easy task to combine those). Hit The Black nails the heavy side, You handles the JCW fans, Cuckoo’s Nest and Sign Of The Times covers the political, Voice Inside is the introspective highlight, as is Some People Fly. Chris performed a few years ago as accompaniment to Lily Cornell Silver performing Black Gives Way To Blue from AIC, in the background and out of spotlight, and I still felt that power (from her as well, she was amazing).
