I own a RED Monstro 8K VV and I absolutely love it. As a DP who works for a lot of different brands… sometimes I’m asked to shoot on different cameras. I love the Arri cameras as well but other than that, I’d reach for my Monstro over any other camera. Even the new DSMC3 bodies are very annoying to me. They dont feel thought out to me.
The Gemini and Monstro are definitely great at the sub 8k price point for complete packages. Not going to magically book you jobs but the image is really good for half of what a used Venice 1 or Alexa Mini would cost. I went with the Amira, but you can't put it on a gimbal.
It is worth noting that due to the official focus on updating, and the neglect of DSMC2, many 5000-6000 hours of DSMC2 are extremely cheap in China and many other parts of the world. A typical Monstro VV might cost as little as £3,000-4,000. Given its powerful features, I think it's an excellent investment for students. Of course, it is also necessary to consider whether people will be willing to buy in the future.
Totally agree with you. I bought a Dragon X a few months ago as a proper A cam for my Komodo and love the image out of it. Also as you say the body and that you don’t need any cables is just great. Great talking head shot, which lens did you use for that? Cheers
As an owner of an ARRI Alexa Mini and Amira, Ranger Monstro, Monstro DSMC2 and Ranger Gemini, and Sony FX6 and FX3 (different tools for different jobs / environments), I love reaching for my REDs whenever I can. And, the DSMC2 line is definitely a buyers market now with how inexpensive they’ve become, and with how much performance you get out of them. I definitely enjoy the look I get out of the AlevIII sensor from my ARRIs (which comes with the price point of those cameras), but the DSMC2 line (especially Monstro and Gemini) are absolutely no slouches, and get plenty of usage on my professional projects, especially corporate and live event work. Also, I love the cableless design, unlike the current DSMC3 offerings. And, the DSMC2 line of cameras will still outperform the majority of new mirrorless / hybrid offerings for the next 5+ years, easily. Also owned two Komodos, but sold those off as the image and DR wasn’t close to my Monstros and Gemini, and were ultimately collecting dust.
I love my DSMC 2. From a arri owner i find my self picking up my red more. It’s just like you said I can take it out the bag turn it on and be ready to shoot. With cameras like arri I have to make sure I have all the wiring needed to run the camera. I own the helium weapon and Komodo. I honestly think I’m going to sale the Komodo. 😞

I bought one beginning of 2024. It was the best Idea ever for my portfolio.
Wouldn’t use used Mini-Mags, instead a new CineMag but otherwise DSMC2 is so nice. I love my Monstro. Even in comparison to Helium, Monstro is just so much better.
@@Hertogfilmltd shot my last feature on the dragon and monstro. Both great cameras, the monstro is about a stop better in lowlight. but the dragon still retains that softer, filmic look right out of camera. That being said at the same resolutions they match up perfectly.
@@DanielTroyer Would you after all recommend the monstro or the dragon x, and is the full frame sensor really worth it compared to dragon x. Do you like the image out of the monstro more or the dragon X? Lowlight the monstro obviously wins but that full frame sensor is what makes me think twice so very hard for me. And btw is there a way to use a speedbooster on the dragon x with ef lenses?
@@Hertogfilmltd At the prices they can be had for now, I'd probably go monstro. But if you're on a budget the Dragon X is still extremely powerful. My friend has a monstro package for sale for like $8k I think if you're interested.
I picked up a RED Helium this year for my company to pair with our RED Monstero. They match really well. I was renting Komodo cams often and the color science was very different. Also not a fan of how much Komodo needs to be rigged. Helium is great quality but the monitor is nowhere as nice as dsmc 3 SmallHD monitors on Raptor or KX
Dsmc 2 7inch monitor looks as if the image is clipped even tho it’s not. So if one is a person who relies on the monitor for checking exposure, avoid 7inch for 5inch, which is more accurate. Plus the monitors of DSMC2 are super laggy. Imagery of the sensor is beautiful for sure.
Start at 1:55. Footage looks awesome though. Nice review. Looking forward to more RED review
Great looking stuff. Love the lighting and set on the shot of you. Would you mind sharing what lens you used on that shot?
Thanks, fd 55 1.2

Absolutely the same
Do you use the Kippertie ND mount?
Dsmc2 Sensors still beats every new consumer camera and will for the next 5 years.
Bingo. That Gemini Sensor is God Tier… F’ these stills cameras posing as cinema cameras. 🤣
DSMC2 Monstro does beat Alexa

Bought a Gemini in end of 2023, this year a komodo X and the Gemini image is so much nicer
People were buying Komodo X, when Gemini kits were the same price. WEIRD!
Purely for video work absolutely a dedicated cinema camera like Gemini is a good choice. But as a hybrid, Z8 was a good choice.

@@PaulePorter thanks man! I’m glad you agree as well. Fd 50mm 1.2 on the z8 for talking head.

Scarlet-W and Alexa Mini is my arsenal. Who needs the latest greatest when you already have it?
What size is the scarlet W sensor? How is it in lowlight
@@PeterDiBussolos35 with a 1.3x crop. Lowlight is really nice on the Dragon sensor with the lowlight OLPF

just bought a Monstro :)

Red DSMC still love the images.. look organic and Cine cosmetic. Than the komodo.. The red Komodo look Digital like Mirrorless camera for me

Not true, but okay

Must have been good enough to be brought into space hahaha

to be honest red komodo x is best camera
