Unleash the Power of Sixths on Your Acoustic Guitar
    Hey Guitar Hero!
Today, we're diving into one of my favorite techniques on the acoustic guitar: using sixths! This versatile approach can be used for strumming practice, adding bluesy flair, and so much more.
    What are Sixths?
Sixths refer to notes played on the guitar neck that are six frets apart. These intervals create a beautiful, warm sound.
    Getting Started with Sixths
We'll be using the A7 chord shape on the 2nd and 4th strings. There are two basic "shapes" you can use to play sixths within this chord:
Same Fret Shape: Both fingers are on the same fret.
Staggered Shape: Your middle finger (second finger) is one fret ahead of your first finger.
The cool part? You can strum all five strings (except the low E) while playing these sixths. Mute the low E with your thumb for a clean sound.
    Exploring Sixths on the Neck
Now comes the fun part! With these two shapes, you can walk your way up and down the neck of the guitar. Experiment with strumming patterns or improvising single notes.
    Sixths in a Blues Context
Want to add a bluesy twist to your playing? Here's a trick:
Instead of your typical shuffle rhythm when you hit the A chord in a blues progression, try using the sixths walk-up we learned.
This technique injects a cool bluesy flavor into your playing.
    Practice and Experimentation
The beauty of sixths lies in its versatility. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Practice Strumming Patterns: Use sixths to develop your right-hand strumming skills.
Improvise with Single Notes: Explore melodies by playing single notes within the sixths.
Combine Strumming and Single Notes: Mix things up by combining strumming and single-note playing.
Bonus Tip: Search for an E major backing track online. When the track hits the A chord, experiment with the sixths walk-up instead of your usual rhythm.
    Let's Get Playing!
I hope this lesson sparks your creativity! Grab your guitar, explore sixths, and have some fun this weekend.
    Henry
