I’m a former 20 year law enforcement officer. I’ve worked in 2 different states on both sides of the country. I live in NC now, and have only had contact with 2 troopers. Both were exactly the kind of officer you do not want to deal with. One was unprofessional beyond words. The second had a mind like a coin operated machine. The local cops call them “grey gods”. They have some superiority mindset. I hope this is the rare occasion, not the norm. I also never gave indication of my past until afterwards.
Im a professional truck driver who has driven the entire 48 states. I have dealt with a lot of law enforcement good and bad and l can honestly say the NCHP is one of the most professional agencies in the country.
I'm a NC native and I've traveled all over this country. No other LEO comes close to the men and women of the NCSHP. Top notch and best-in-class in every way.
I'm from Alabama, so I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I'm a Law Enforcement Officer in my 24th year. I'll be retiring in less than 3 years. I'm a Shift Supervisor, and our #1 goal for every shift is that everyone goes home. I pray that all of these young men will have long, successful careers, and will come home safely after every tour.
Don't start nothing, won't be nothing.... Seems to be a critical point you types fail to understand. It's easy to go home safe when you haven't mistreated anyone.
@ampatriot FYI, I don't mistreat anyone. I treat everyone the way I want to be treated. I am sworn to serve and protect everyone with whom I come in contact. Some people fail to realize this. If a person is doing nothing wrong, they will have no problems with me. If you don't break the law, there won't be a problem.
First, I’d like to say thank you for your service as a law enforcement officer. This video kind of reminds me of some of the training structure of Marine Corps boot camp that we did at Paris Island. I’m not in law enforcement but in 2024 I participated in something my county offers called Citizens Police Academy. It’s a 10 wk 1hr - 1 1/2 hr mostly classroom setting and a few on hands opportunities where each wk we had various officers of the department do PowerPoints presentations and discussed their jobs within the Police Dept. We had CSI, SWAT, Air Support, 911, Bomb Squad, Investigative Detective, Gang Task Force, and Firearms training, come to presentations. We also went to the indoor range and had a chance to participate in a firearm training scenario looking at a 10X20 type jumbo screen and interacting using a laser fired 9mm Glock type pistol to fire. I would like to say hats off to law enforcement officers. People don’t realize officers sometimes have only a split second to make critical decisions. We also got the opportunity to do a 8hr tour with an officer in different sectors and tours. If people only knew what you guys went through on duty many would have a different perspective of law enforcement.
My father is a retired Lieutenant from NCSHP. He was in the Air Force before he became a Nc State Trooper. 31 years and 4 months he was a Trooper. I am very proud of him and have always looked up to him and everything he's accomplished!
My Dad served 22 years on NCSHP (and as a Pursuit Driving Instructor and The Academy), then as a Chief of Police for our hometown for 10 years. The respect he had in the community was incredible. Love you Dad.
96th Basic School Dec-'95 to June '96. What a great documentary to tell the story of what it's like to go through the basic school. Nothing like doing first person though.
I’m currently in the police academy in wake county, just 3 miles down the road from the NCHSP academy. My academy is ran by actual state troopers and so far it’s been a humbling experience and I’m very proud to be here. Some of my fellow cadets are going to the academy after graduating Wake tech BLET ACADEMY. Hats off to these future troopers!
I had the privilege of attending a 13 week leadership school hosted by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. I was able to meet many of the outstanding men & women who are Troopers. They are very well trained and most professional. Wishing the recruit Troopers depicted in this video a safe and enjoyable career!
I have the absolute most heartfelt respect gratitude, an admiration, for State Highway Patrol Troopers! I live in North Carolina, and it is so wonderful to know they are out! I pray God keeps them safe from all harm 🙏
Graduated in November 1983 the 72 nd class. Glad to see so many traditions still being followed. I taught collision investigation in the basic schools from 94-2000. Great video, took me back to 1983
I always appreciated the NCSHP Troopers Assoc. Caisson unit coming to many Georgia officer/trooper/deputy funerals over the years. They were always extremely professional, caring, and supportive when a Georgia officer was killed in the line of duty.
The comments about these guys and girls wanting to be Marines is actually a compliment to the way the NCSHP Basic School is ran and for those of us that made it, we thank you!! It’s understood that school isn’t for everyone, some don’t have what it takes and that’s OK. Try not to be consumed by jealousy and hatred, it’s bad for your health. That’s not knocking local city or county officers, it’s just not for everyone.
Law enforcement should not have a military mindset though. I suppose though that with the increase in the war on drugs and society becoming more violent it is inevitable.
I was in the actual military. I stand by my premise that law enforcement should not have a military mindset. I will agree that mental discipline and professionalism is a necessity for law enforcement. I don’t think that law enforcement should have a military mindset but I do understand the reality that with the breakdown of society and the violent gangs and drugs culture that by default law enforcement in general has had to undertake a more paramilitary mindset. In an ideal society law enforcement would be more of the old school “peace” officer mindset.

I have had many positive interactions with the NCSHP and they have some quality people there. It was interesting to see what goes into preparing someone to be a trooper.
Well-done video which certainly casts a good impression upon NCSHP. This reminds me of the two-season Australian television series 'Recruits' which outlines the training of NSW police officers. At the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer NC there are two former NCSHP cars, a 1934 Ford and a mid-1960's model which are fun to contrast with the current police cars.
I decided I wanted to be a Trooper in 1978 at 10 years of age. After High School, and upon completing 8 years of serving in the U.S. Air Force, I learned my eyesight did not meet acceptable uncorrected limits. Since then, I have served in law enforcement at other agencies and am now just a few months shy of 30 years of service. If you have what it takes to be accepted by the NCSHP, and the fortitude to endure their Basic School, then you better thank the LORD for blessing you as such, because not just anybody can do it.
I will say as a EMT for 20 years, the one time we had a gun in our face, in the back of the ambulance way out In the country and needed help, Every Trooper showed up in from 4 counties came to help us in minutes! , Not a deputy one for over 30! 🫡 But I’ve also got my first speeding ticket in over 25 years last year as well!
My Father was a Trooper in the NCSHP for 25 years. If they stay with the force long enough there WILL come a time when the only thing standing between life and death is them, and they’ll have their training to rely upon. May God bless and keep them.

We seem to be in agreement then that this is paramilitary but it is not the full military nature in the concrete or abstract. IMHO, having been in the actual military this video is a “lite” form of military training hence paramilitary.
I'm native nc and always been on the outlaw side of law but I always respected the state troopers iv come in contact with for I know what they do everyday!! Very dangerous out here these days!! If I wasn't a felon I woulda went to the academy for the troopers!!
WRAL: Troopers suspended, 180 cases dismissed amid questions about credibility. Way to go, NCSHP! You've lost the trust of the citizens and you don't get that back.
I’ve never met a bad trooper!. I’ve been in NC since ‘89. The Texas (DSP) don’t mess with ya unless you’re really doing something bad. Not, pulling someone over for a seatbelt violation. In my experience, they “troll” small towns, pull over, write tickets. That way, the locals aren’t the “bad guys.” Small town, 1400, plus surrounding folks shopping in our small town. If someone has a diff opine, I’ll listen. Above is my experience.
Troopers in NC are the only ones I have known to pull people over and ticket them for petty shit like seatbelts and stuff like that. I have been pulled over and ticketed for no seat belt by a trooper and wasn't committing any other infraction. A local cop I know told me that was a chicken shit reason to bother someone.
I work for the NC Forest Service and we fight more forest fires than at least 49 states and thats no exaggeration. I hunt with a couple troopers and always joke about the difference between our agencies. We iron our shirt and put it on, they put their shirt on and iron it!
I’m just curious if it’s ever occurred to the Training Officers that they could permanently damage someone’s hearing by yelling directly into a person’s ear?
Ah, some of you need to stop being negative. Appreciate the grit these men and women have! They’re what keep the devil from getting too comfortable in our state!
I always talk a little smack to the Grey Gods, but they are one of the most professional Law Enforcement Organizations in the country. I do wish, HP would let their Troopers experience other aspects of the law besides Chapter 20, DUI Arrests etc. These men and women will never get to do a high risk drug search warrant or investigate a homicide. Not involving a motor vehicle
Not true. The NCSHP has a Criminal Interdiction Unit and a Rapid Response Team. Both units have served high risk warrants on murderers, drug dealers and other dangerous individuals. They used to do a lot of work with the DEA and US Marshal's service- not sure about that now as I retired in 2020 after 30 years. I spent the last 6 years of my career in Special Operations. The NCSHP is involved in a lot of things that are not highlighted and most other officers don't realize. 91st basic school forever. Be Good or Be Gone!
That is something that I have oftener thought about also. I am not law enforcement but the irony is that police and deputy sheriffs experience more variety of dangerous situations. Police and sheriffs initiate traffic stops also plus every a plethora of other situations such as domestic violence amongst others. However to be fair to troopers they do sometimes tend to be more to themselves without immediate backup on the highway. Hence, why I can see some paramilitary training and elements and discipline needed to be involved. The reality is that if a state hypothetically had one law enforcement agency that covered all law enforcement duties for the state then it would have high standards sort of like the military does.
I'm almost sure the SgtMaj pulled me over before on either 440 or 40. When I was younger I was driving a Ranger that didn't have auto windows and I was moving to roll the window down and he just opened the door and scared the hell out of me. I received my ticket for an expired tag and went along my merry way. It got dismissed after I payed it. I respect every LEO, I respect NCSHP a lot, even more when I see them sitting on the side of the road lmao
Yes thank you. They have got to stop this is cowboy crap. Military branches has very psychological training programs. When your road officer, you don’t get to ask questions or call a supervisor you have to make a decision it your badge number that you’reaffecting. Not your sergeant.
@ they are emulating the military with their school. To yell at cadets and have them getting smoked is fine. But then the leader of the training school is giving the motivation speak and one of the instructors is chewing bubble gum? No military bearing there. It’s crap. It’s a bad look. Former military here and its shows a lack of discipline. You can’t have a discipline school and let an instructor chew bubble gum while the head cheese is addressing the cadets. Unprofessional. Ask a Marine, after all that’s who they are emulating. Bet that wouldn’t fly at Paris island.
Deputies & Police Officers should get the training and equipment these guys get. I was in LE for 17 years before I left to make more money outside of LE. Deputies & Police Officers are doing the real work. Responding to domestics, fights, murders and so on but they are at the bottom of the bottom of the list as important.
The huge difference is that in military basic training Uncle Sam owns the recruit, the recruit is subject to the UCMJ and court martial and cannot just up and leave.
Why should I apply? I am actually a VETERAN that was in the ACTUAL military. I served my nation for national defense. Not to mention I am too old to join to begin with. I went through an actual MILITARY boot camp.
Well you asked me why I didn’t apply if I was the one that you directed the question to. Then I answered your inquiry. I am sorry but I am not impressed with the boot camp aspect of the video. I went to the real military boot camp. That is not to say that I do not honor or respect the NCHP. They are upstanding and professional and disciplined people. Lastly, thank you for serving the great citizens of this state by your post ai just read. I commend you.
If you want to be a Marine, join the Marines. If you want to be a real law enforcement officer who does more than traffic enforcement, join your local Sheriff's Office or Police Department. If writing tickets is what you want to do, the NCSHP is the perfect spot for you.
@@erichoffman3593 I retired with over 20 years of LE experience. At 3 different levels. If I wanted to be a traffic cop, I would have been one. My master's degree suggested I should do something different. So I did. I'm loving life right now, champ. So try that on somebody else. My original comment still stands. If you would like to compare credentials for the world to see, just let me know. If you don't, have a nice day.
@shannonbaker273 Ooh....a masters degree huh? Wow, let me bow down to your infinite knowledge. Look son, I did pretty well in the book knowledge department as well with the degrees and the paperwork to go with it. Framed paper don't make you anything. I bet you were the type that when someone walked in your office, you had your own "hero" wall, a monument to yourself. Look at me! Look at me! Fact is, you probably used those degrees to get to a position where you weren't a front facing, front line officer or supervisor. One of those who always came in after the fact when all the dirty work had been done and split second decisions had been made. Fact is, you don't know crap about the NCSHP but what someone may have told you who also didn't know crap. There are many facets to the organization with many men and women doing many different jobs that you'll never see or hear about. Keep being ignorant.
If they wear a badge at some point they think they are above the law? _my nephew has been with them over 20and hes a horrible_ person. Just last week cases were dismissed from nchp because of dishonest actions.
@@dailybrm-5497 (YES) I know I was talking about marines being their training and how the NC troopers training relatable level of their standards... How some Troopers have X military backgrounds...
Oorah? At Bragg?? I don’t think so. Never. And these troopers don’t need the “wanna be” shark attack. They need integrity lessons, more dealing with the public training, and most importantly: to understand they are not above the law- they need to demonstrate the law. 24/7/365.
These young men appear to be well trained and ready to get after it. But the proof is what they do--or should I say "are allowed to do" out on the road. It's my understanding these troopers are neutered right from the start by being restricted from pursuing a vehicle at speeds over 55 mph unless they believe a felony has been committed. No wonder I rarely see North Carolina troopers out on the roadway. This past Sunday I was driving back to Raleigh from Winston Salem. Most of the way it is a 65 mph speed limit. I was driving 74, and I was the slow driver. Ridiculous. I can only imagine how demoralizing it must be for a trooper to attempt to stop a speeding motorist and then have him take off and not be able to pursue him. The North Carolina legislature and the NCHP leadership need to grow some balls and take the roads back. Look to Arkansas to see how it should be done. Their troopers don't have to get approval to pursue or PIT someone that won't stop. And brother, those state boys put them in the ditches and trees by dozens. Their state police colonel supported by the state police commission, the state legislature and the governor, has obviously put it out to their troopers to do what needs to be done to stop someone from fleeing, and if you wreck your police car, don't worry, we will get you another one. Just do a search for Arkansas State Police chase on UA-cam. There's got to be hundreds of videos to watch. Them Arkansas state boys will get in your ass real quick. FUAFO. In the meanwhile, I rarely see a NCHP trooper doing anything to stop the craziness here.
There are a few in the Patrol, but sometimes it is just a misinterpretation of being serious about their job. Great line from Raylan in Justified...You run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. You run into assholes all day, you're the asshole.
How sad. How can one stereotype every single Trooper in all our US States. This Blue Line is very Thin. One of those Troopers may not return home to a wife, child, or their unit. And that Trooper might just be a cut above what you've said they were.
@ troopers are out of shape from sitting in their cars all day and tik toking they wouldn’t make it 10 mins in a legit fire academy. They couldn’t take the heat, on calls, or around the fire house. Boy.
What a great documentary! Thank you NCHP and the NC Troopers and all Law Enforcement who keep us safe.

Thank you for making my raods and staye safe
@@elliottjameson5405 ^ Trolling 🐷
Thanks for my speeding ticket.
@elliottjameson5405 Wow really didn't know that.
@@WhiteBoyizFresh Get a real job. McDonald's is always hiring
I work for the NC Forest Service and we fight more forest fires than at least 49 states and thats no exaggeration. I hunt with a couple troopers and always joke about the difference between our agencies. We iron our shirt and put it on, they put their shirt on and iron it!
Typical braggart know it all dumbass firefighter. Who are you kidding??? More forest fires than 49 other states??? www.fire.ca.gov/incidents
I see you guys picking up on the CHP academy videos haha, I'm taking my exam in mass this march.
Good luck with your exam, hope you pass!
Hell yeah from Winston-Salem north Carolina here these are some great troopers right here 🤘🏻
No Harder than Basic Training...Be Safe out there
They are a great organization. Have a couple family and friends that are troopers. They make our local law enforcement department look like a joke.
I’m just curious if it’s ever occurred to the Training Officers that they could permanently damage someone’s hearing by yelling directly into a person’s ear?
SCHP could use some of this training and discipline.
That's the difference between State Police and Highway Patrol.
The Gods of Grey and the enforcers of the sacred chapter 20.
NCST are the best. The comment about boot camp is ridiculous. You don’t learn law in marine Corp. Nothing bad about Marines,my son was both.
So basically when I leave the military I gotta do basic training all over again? 😂
While I haven't been to this particular academy, mine was a bit more difficult than Army Basic, but basically yeah you gotta do it again 😆
@ well at least after the academy it’s not a military lifestyle 😂😂😂😂
Can’t be no harder than OSUT.
Yes thank you.
They have got to stop this is cowboy crap. Military branches has very psychological training programs. When your road officer, you don’t get to ask questions or call a supervisor you have to make a decision it your badge number that you’reaffecting. Not your sergeant.
If you want it.
NC state troopers give the most hell out of any state troopers
More state police could use videos like these to
I like how they want to be squared away like the military but yet at 6:39 one of the school instructors is chewing bubble gum. How professional.
And that’s what found to get butt hurt about? Mighty petty!!😢
To be fair to the NCSHP they are paramilitary and not military.
Deputies & Police Officers should get the training and equipment these guys get. I was in LE for 17 years before I left to make more money outside of LE. Deputies & Police Officers are doing the real work. Responding to domestics, fights, murders and so on but they are at the bottom of the bottom of the list as important.
That is the irony of it all.
Got nothing on basic training or boot camp
What patrol school were you in?
The huge difference is that in military basic training Uncle Sam owns the recruit, the recruit is subject to the UCMJ and court martial and cannot just up and leave.
@@elliottjameson5405 Sounds like you were kicked out of the Military because you couldn't cut it there, Billy Bad Troll.
N.C's finest 🙏😉
If you want to be a Marine, join the Marines. If you want to be a real law enforcement officer who does more than traffic enforcement, join your local Sheriff's Office or Police Department. If writing tickets is what you want to do, the NCSHP is the perfect spot for you.
Still hating on the Patrol, huh?

I retired with over 20 years of LE experience.
Holy Shit, is that Marty Mcswains boy I saw 👀 Damn I am getting old.
If they wear a badge at some point they think they are above the law? _my nephew has been with them over 20and hes a horrible_ person. Just last week cases were dismissed from nchp because of dishonest actions.

Bragg is home of the Army not the Marines.
Bragg is the army, not the Marine Corps
@@dailybrm-5497 (YES) I know I was talking about marines being their training and how the NC troopers training relatable level of their standards... How some Troopers have X military backgrounds...
As two others have said, Bragg isn’t a MC base. It’s US ARMY! Are there some Marines there? Yes.But that doesn’t make it a MC installation!
Oorah? At Bragg?? I don’t think so. Never. And these troopers don’t need the “wanna be” shark attack. They need integrity lessons, more dealing with the public training, and most importantly: to understand they are not above the law- they need to demonstrate the law. 24/7/365.
Those are some sharp Class A’s….

I Just want to take The driving course to make ME a better Uber eats driver
Im from western north Carolina and have meet some state troopers and local officers to but the state troopers dont take bs from nobody
So when I turn 18 I get to be this heck yeah
Tbh its not that terrible. For me basic training was harder mentally and physically.
Well when the government basically owns you and you are subject to the UCMJ it is a different world.
bro this looks like marine corps bootcamp
Well i was 18 when i did basic training ... Im 34 now 😅
The one thing i know about nchp THEY DO NOT PLAY
So.....basically marine corps boot camp all over again?

Na, this shit ain’t nearly as bad as Paris island

Maybe it’s you
How many times did you apply and get rejected?
There are a few in the Patrol, but sometimes it is just a misinterpretation of being serious about their job.
Great line from Raylan in Justified...You run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. You run into assholes all day, you're the asshole.
Thank you for your service Barney! Some do, everybody else is a wannabe.
How sad. How can one stereotype every single Trooper in all our US States. This Blue Line is very Thin. One of those Troopers may not return home to a wife, child, or their unit. And that Trooper might just be a cut above what you've said they were.
