- On March 23, 2003, a convoy of the United States Army's 507th Maintenance Company and the 3rd Combat Support Battalion elements, led by a Humvee driven by Lori Piestewa, made a wrong turn and were ambushed near Nasiriyah, a major crossing point over the Euphrates northwest of Basra.
The convoy was supposed to detour around the town but instead turned directly into it, eventually running into adversaries. The convoy came under attack by enemy fire. The Humvee in which Army Private First Class Jessica Lynch was riding was hit and the Americans were taken prisoner.
Jessica Lynch was rescued by Joint Task Force 121. A team composed of Navy SEALs, and an element from the Joint Special Operations Task Force 121 composed of U.S. Army Special Forces , Air Force PJ’s, Army Rangers, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) and Delta Force.

Andy Stumpf, who was a young SEAL back in 2003 and participated in this rescue, had Jessica Lynch on his podcast "Cleared Hot". They both talked about this night and the events that led up to it, and their lives after. It was a really nice podcast and awesome to hear from the people actually involved.

I served for 20 years as an Infantryman and the fact that my country would stop at nothing to bring me (or my body) home was always a source of comfort.
This rescue was a morale booster for me. I had nothing to do with it but I was in country at the time and needed some good news.

That man's wife was a nurse on Lynch's ward. He mapped out the floor plan for the Rescue Team. He was a judo champion and Olympic contender. He wrote a book about the whole thing.

The fact that special forces were sent into rescue one PFC held prisoner is really a touching story. Moments like these truly make me proud to be an American. No matter what other bad things may happen here, at least we can say that the men and women in our armed services are truly capable of some amazing things.

but, can we appreciate the Iraqi doctor who tried to rescue her even though his country was invaded by the U.S and his patient was a U.S soldier. That's a man who values his profession above all, he sees them all as human beings who need treatment, not enemies.
The Iraqi doctor was also a prisoner of the taliban, that doctor was forced into the taliban and forced to mainly only help their fighters. It’s not us invading them, if Iraq didn’t let us, it would’ve been an invasion. Iraq pleaded for help for years since the Russian-Taliban War that destroyed that country and dictators.
Every doctor in Iraq has that problem, he actually kept her alive cause taliban wanted them to so they would try and get information and use it as a propaganda video.

Seeing people as “human beings” is a basic thing to say about a doctor, especially doctors having to force to work with the taliban, there’s a whole documentary on the doctors of the esrly stages of war.
Look it up and watch/read about it and see how many doctors have been killed by the taliban and groups like it for disobeying their orders. When you’re a captive, you don’t get to say anything, all doctors see people as “human beings” but your capturers say otherwise.
All those people on that rescue mission are that woman’s heroes. They are everyone’s heroes but they have a special place in her heart forever. What a story

An unknown part, recounted in Marty Skovlund Jr.'s book "Violence of Action" recalls that the Rangers on target discovered that all other POWs besides Lynch had died, and were not prepared to dig up their bodies outside of the hospital.
1/75 NCOs told all junior Rangers to pull security, and proceeded to dig up the bodies themselves, shielding the younger Rangers from the task.
"I was digging up a body with my 1SG, and we picked up this girl. She was half wrapped in a bag and all the muscle and tissue came off and slid onto me. I instantly puked again...it was bad. You look to the left and right and it was all NCOs. We didn't want to expose the junior Rangers to that shit. Everyone was digging with gloves, we had no shovels or anything like that- everyone was just puking and digging."

All American Military channel used to have a documentary/ autobiography called The Ranger. He was one of the rangers that's helped recover the bodies.
We had a couple drill sergeants tell us this story in basic to emphasize the importance of land nav, not becoming complacent, and to tell us that it doesn’t matter what mos you are, if you wear a us military uniform, you are a target.

I was a SNCO in an Army Aviation Brigade when this all went down. I remember how we cheered and we were so proud when they went and got her from her captors. I cried again just now watching this. God Bless them all.

I'm a former Marine grunt, and Vietnam vet. It was a few years after I got out of the Corps that all hell broke loose in my mind, and I had to seek help. It was either that, or the alternative, but I had two young daughters at the time. There was no way in hell, (I told myself) that some therapist was going to break open my little bubble. Until, finally, he did. The more I cried, the harder I cried, until, embarrassed that I couldn't control my emotions, I left his office until I could gain control of myself. I apologized for the tears, and told him I felt it was unbecoming. He said in a very calm tone, "without tears, you have no soul". I don't know that to be true, but I do know that since those days in that office, I have shed many tears, and have not apologized for a single one. Welcome home. Semper Fi.

You're completely right, but it all depends on the experiences you have been thru. For example, Ukraine is not Irak or Afghanistan, this is WW1 again with trenches warfare, drones and aircraft dropping bombs on each side 24h. What I'm saying is some lucky guys who actually come home alive are so desensitized that it's almost impossible to share a tear, even if you want to. Emotions disappear when you spend too much time under artillery and drones attacking you, and seeing how everyday familiar faces disappear under body bags and new recruits come in to relieve.

What you forgot to mention, which is a huge part of this story and brought to the attention by Jessica Lynch herself as she continues to come forward, is the fact the the US government awarded her some medals based on false stories that they themselves generated. She has come out to state she did not fire any weapons and they had just been ambushed and attacked so quickly she had little to no idea what happened because of the chaos and injuries. She states that she should have never been awarded some of the medals because of the the false stories put out that she went down shooting and helping others. It takes a ton of courage, to not only differ and make it out of what they did to her, but to also come out and speak on what really happened after false stories were put out and the narrative completely changed the events that took place that day.

I’m from Arizona, and I remember when Lori Piestewa lost her life. She had a mountain named after her in the valley. It’s called Piestewa Peak, and it is beautiful to look at. Thanks for this story.

They renamed the peak from Squaw Peak to Piestewa Peak after her death.

I wish footage from inside the hospital during the raid was included in this video. It was shown on several media outlets at the time. One of the things I remember is her saying to her rescuers, “I’m an American soldier”, and them responding that they knew who she was and that they were there to rescue her. It was really good footage, then carrying her down stairs, pretty cool.

Its beautiful bc of her humility and morale. We sent a bunch of top tier guys with top tier equipment just for her, but it didn't even occur to her that they were there specifically for her.

Was at the Joint Readiness Training Center, as a damn near brand new Private when this happened. Still in. Always felt bad for how Jessica was treated by skeptics. She didn’t ask for any of it. Proud to have served with her and am happy that she’s found ways to use her experience to for positivity.
I was a civilian mechanic at Fort McCoy when the war started. We handled Mob and demob of this unit in January 2003. With the 107th maintenance stationed with us as support, we busted our asses to get this stuff ready and shipped. When this story broke, it hit us all really hard, and we took it to heart that what we did really mattered to these kids! I dont remember exactly when they came back, but we handled their equipment again. One day I pulled up a 5 ton tractor to my bay, and was going over my checks before bringing it in when I noticed names carved into the steering wheel. I didn't think anything of it, but there was a name with kia, then mia, then kia after each. All of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks that this was one of the trucks in the convoy that was over there when this all happened. Those were the names of those missing and killed. I broke down and cried my eyes out. These were somebody's kids, and they may not be coming home. I dragged all the other guys in the shop over to see this, and said. Do you understand why we are here now? What we do matters to these kids! Make it perfect as you can. Safe enough to put your kid in it and send them into battle! We all buckled down and put everything we had into this. I am so I proud to say I was a part of the efforts! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SERVE YOU!

Hell yeah Brother had family served in ww1 ww2 Korean war Vietnam and my uncle served in the 80s or 90s and my uncle served on a carrier and had a family friend that served in USMC fought in helman prov afgan his dad Missouri national guard was also there he lost his dad to a IED he still thinks its his fault 2011 times frame when this happened he served in the 184 marine expedition sustainment command best friend I got to know Now a Co for a jail. So many people showed up for his dad I was very young 10 to 12 I think seeing so many people in uniform

I remember hearing about this when I was in school. I'm from El Paso and that's where the US Army's 507th Maintenance Company is stationed and at the time I was in JROTC, when this happened one of my instructors told us that he knew someone that was assigned to that company. And then later we heard in the news that one of the guys that died was from El Paso. This just added more motivation for me to join the military after high school, I am now retired from the Navy, I was a Hospital Corpsman. This was a cool video dude!

Pat Tillman and his brother were part of the operation with Pat saying the whole rescue was a publicly stunt. He was later killed by friendly fire. RIP Pat

If you're looking for some more crazy military ones, you should look into 173rd airborne Chosen Company and their unbelievable stand at the Battle ofWanat. A perfect storm of decision making throughout the year, local support of the enemy, and isolation led to one platoon having to face down a tide of organized, trained, and determined enemy in the unforgiving mountains of Nuristan. In two seperate battles in their deployment they would have 6 kia in an ambush, and a further 9 kia in the assault on their base. From what I remember they were forced to call gun runs from responding Apaches within 10 meters of their own positions. Truly a worst case scenario for the soldiers, and against all those odds they still held.

The whole rescue was staged. Jessica Lynch wrote a book about it that refuted the Bush admin s whole account.
Lol Jessica lynch herself came out and said it was all fake and put on as a media performance. All of the doctors inside the hospital also said that the US troops fired blanks and that there wasn’t even any Iraqi soldiers there.
To add a couple things. Number 1, the informant who told the Marines of the intel walked something like 8 miles to deliver the news to Marines from the 2nd battalion 8th marine Regiment, so good on him. Number 2, Marines from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment also took part in the rescue operation, but in a much different way. They were tasked with purposefully advancing on known Fedeyeen holdouts to draw out and hopefully draw attention away from the hospital so the rescue operation could go on without a hitch. One could deduce that that action assisted with the reduction of enemy personnel that were stationed in and around the hospital. It was a tense time, and I still remember the full spectrum of emotions that everybody was feeling during the Battle of An Nasiriyah. It is good to see that people still remember the bravery of those who were part of the invasion. Perhaps the reasoning of going to war was flawed, but you cannot blame the warfighters themselves for doing a job that was told/asked of them to do.

Do you remember AAV' s in front of us that got stuck across the Euphrates... I was on the bridge until we got mortars and rocketed... then we just leveled the the who town... it's crazy... I have only bumped into 2 fellow vets in the civilian life that's been to the same area we been through. God Bless yall brothers... stay Motivated and be thankful we still alive and maybe be Good big brothers for younger vets.

I was there during all of that, the absolute craziest engagement I was involved in when I was in the marine corps. Battle of the Nas was no joke. It was crazy indeed Charlie 1/2 out. We help some of the army 507 as we came up to the city. And heard that the seals and others were looking for them.
Thank you for your service sir. I only wish that you guys got mentioned more often in this story and all the acts of bravery carried out by the soilders and medals they received. She should split the untold millions she made off her horrible ordeal with all of you guys.

I always wondered, were there any iraqi units that performed well in battle against the US forces during this war?
@Radar Blip no, they underperformed as a cohesive unit itself.
But with that going said their training isn't like your typical modern unit in the west.
With that going said there indirect fire was on point that day. Their use and number of rpg's made a great equalizer in some cases.
But they fought more like a guerilla style way. Using civilians as cover and all kinds of dirty tricks.
But as they fought hard and were fanatical to say the least. They have my respect as warriors even though they're enemies.
I used to work with a guy who was a engineer with Bridge Company A of the 6th engineer support battalion of the marine corps reserves out of Battle Creek, Michigan and he said Nasiriyah was some of the craziest stuff he’d ever seen

I'm Danish not American but I'm fascinated by the US armed forces, Marines, Rangers, Seals, Green Berets, Delta operators. This mini doc left me in tears. A wonderful bit of production and a wonderful tribute to fallen heroes. Those who don't make it back, and the courage and unselfish sacrifice of all US personnel to rescue those captured wounded or fallen. Thank you all for your service to the world not just your country. If I could I would sign up and join the US army, navy or airforce. Anytime anywhere and it would be my honour to.

Idk about you but when I heard them say "touchdown" over the radio I got chills down my spine and my heart pounded with joy. Excellent editing in the buildup to the rescue it's like watching a 2hr movie without all the fluff.

I had a chuckle when I heard there were threats in the hospital and nearby but were neutralized with no casualties.
They sent the literal Avengers for this rescue, and the poor sobs had no idea who they were shooting at.
I was with the 82nd invading Iraq when this happened, we hit a hospital days after Lynch was captured because we got intel on the ground as we were clearing a nearby neighborhood that she might be held there. Obviously we didn’t find anything, but we were all out looking for her ready to destroy the world to find her and the five other Soldiers captured with her.

Did you know anyone by the name of Mark Suggs? He was my uncle, he served around the same time...he passed away last year after fighting leukemia and then caught covid after and his immune system wasn't strong enough but he fought till the end.

As someone who's former SOF for the Swedish mil. and had experiences with a lot of the units who participated in this OP, especially the 160th SOAR, i must say. Hats off to these guys. It was an honor working with these guys and they're the most professional operators out there. Absolute legends

Almost no one will understand the gravity of the situation Jessica (and all the other POWs) were put in. That would be unimaginably scary for anyone, let alone a girl who is a private, who has a broken back and limbs. Unable to resist, fight back, or formulate an escape. Effen scary.
Thats why women shouldn't be put in such a high risk job ,its combat ,not some joke and guys we usually fight are no joke their job is to decimate you ,all this bullshit that men women are equal and they are capable equally is bullshit

It must be so comforting to know that if something happens to you while stationed abroad, That you have the full force of the entire US military to locate you and extract you from anywhere. And they will not stop until you are found.

I am a C-130 mechanic, but I've got to see first hand the men and women that go into harms way without a pause because they know that they are the best of the best. Thank you for everything

That's the problem. She wasn't the ONLY person in captivity. But for obvious reasons, the country sure as hell acted like she was all alone. If the effort is going to be made for ONE, then that same effort should be made for ALL!

I remember watching the movie about her rescue. As a kid it seemed awesome. Then I heard about the real story, hearing Jessica and the SEAL that was a member of the rescue team both laughing and concerned how fast it was publicized.

I was not expecting that the biggest moment of impact for me on this video would be seeing Jessica's ecstatic face on returning home. Many trauma survivors end up haunted by it. She looks so full of joy and life that it seems like it burned away any darkness. I hope she's still doing well.
Hey brother, Jessica is doing better now. She has some significant chronic issues from her pelvis being shattered which opened up her large and small intestines. She had significant injuries resulting from the initial accident (when they were caught up in a haboob) and significant PTSD. But let me be clear, Jessica is not a quitter and her strength inspires me daily

i wonder what secrets/intell/politics-connections ect. she had as the USA 🇺🇸 army has been known to leave POW's ( my family all most being one of them ( and me not being born/alive in 2022 ) and or them knowing allies of the 🇺🇸 IE the frenches or 🇬🇧 ect. ) behind so there's more than there telling just not sure what it is and why this was bumped up the priority list for basically a newbie/1-private class soldier risking a platoon ect. for her i mean that's great she made it out but to me she knew something important enough or sinbell to be worth the risk's
The gravity of this situation is unreal. I cannot even imagine the fear and anxiety they must have felt when they were in the arms of the enemy. I think you honestly have to be them to know what it must feel like. Can you imagine being rescued by a small elite group of men who put themselves in a deadly situation to make sure you came home to your family? The feeling of relief that must have washed over their bodies when they were loaded on a helicopter to safely must have been undescribabl. I guarantee they think about it everyday. I bet to this day it still hits them like a ton of bricks every now and again. I bet they feel so incredibly thankful and still full of fear. How? How do you live life "normal" ever again? Wow, just wow.
Fortunately those men are the most well trained and capable human beings on this planet. They train harder than us normal folks can imagine for these very situations, So they carry them out with relative ease. This was actually a pretty " relaxed" mission for this team.
The list of units reads like the map's of the world series. Jessica Lynch couldn't have been on a safer part of the globe with these men surrounding her. She had the best pilots on earth with the 160th flying her, and the best field medics of the Pj's keeping her alive.
This was one hell of a mission and these men made it look easy.
Impressive is an understatement.
The groups in this video used was probably considered a bit over kill for this mission considering special forces them selves only make up 1% of the United States army themselves and delta force being around 1% of special forces making it into the unit is in itself like winning the lottery. I'm pretty sure the mission where Hillary clinton tried leaving ex special forces soldiers and a bunch of civilians to die with her secrets in bangazi were saved by a single delta force operator. So having a whole team of them mixed with all these other groups could've seized the city if they really wanted to.
All our military men were ready to go but Iraqi doctors inside said that they were in the operating room & that she was safe & being treated well. It was “spiced up” for media. See Tales of the American Empire on this along with how the killing of Bin Laden was also massively altered for media. Seymour Hersh (Pulitzer for My Lai Massacre & Abu Ghraib scandal) found that Bin Laden was being held by the Pakistanis in a custom built jail house when we killed him. Crazy stuff.
What? It's just the most famous us soldier who got a medal for making a wrong turn, blamed that on men, crashed, asked iraqis for help, got captured, got graped, her friend was graped *to death* then america paraded around it's own shame, as if people were proud she was graped.
That is the life of a female in war? What is hard to understand?
Yeah, relief wasn't the only thing washing over her body in that hospital, you go soldier girl, provide comfort to the enemy.

The bravery and resilience of Jessica Lynch is honestly inspiring. She was just a kid when this happend. I can't even imagine being in her situation now let alone at 20.

We in Phoenix, AZ had a mountain called Squaw Peak. It has been renamed Piestewa Peak now in honor of this brave soldier.

I’ve just joined the British RAF university air squadron and these videos always motivate me to aim more towards the forces
My dad was the XO for the tank company that fought in that battle. One of the first things they saw was an army fuel truck and two humvees that were bullet ridden drive past them just a few miles out of town. They first thought it was Iraqi because they thought no one would be so stupid to make that kind of wrong turn. Thanks for making a video about this and shedding light on a complete clusterfuck!
Well, there is a side to this whole story that nobody talks about, especially the Army. The following info came from another transport unit that was paralleling Lynch's unit. The other unit was also Army Guard.
1. They didn't have maps or GPS. Everything in the flat desert looks the same, so no landmarks to reference. But Iraqis could navigate fine.
2. Lynch's unit was very well known for its reputation of slackness and being general slobs about everything from weapons maintenance to vehicle maintenance to basic soldiering skills and definitely no fighting skills. To say discipline was lacking would be an understatement. It did not surprise the other unit when they heard of the debacle with Lynch's unit.
3. Army brass at some point in the chain knew Lynch's unit's problems. To cover their own career butts they fabricated a bogus around Lynch and comrades fighting to the end...blah blah. They certainly could not admit they allowed such an incompetent unit to evolve so low AND put that unit near the moving front.
In fairness to Lynch she did not make up the fairy tale the Army brass presented to the nation. The successful rescue helped distract attention away from the disaster in the desert and which Army officers were responsible.
In between active stints my brother did a short time in Army Reserves before 9/11. Coming from 4 years at Ft Bragg/Airborne he was dismayed at the state of his Reserve unit. But he found out after being activated after 9/11, there are some really slob outfits in the Natl Guard. Some make the Taliban look sharp.

The Lynch debacle became a frequently referenced item when we were training Reservists getting ready to be sent to the sandbox.
Especially the fact that she failed to discharge her weapon at the enemy...
@@LuvBorderCollies yup. Back when it was all peace time and people overall got complacent. No body thought it’d be any different, or that we would wind up in iraq/ Afghanistan. Even if we did, everyone figured it’d just be an easy cake walk like desert storm was.
This was the event that really shook everyone out of that mindset and made people realize, this shit is real and won’t be the easy cake walk ordeal.
@@LuvBorderCollies thanks for your comment. I crossed the border into Iraq March 23rd and took up security at the bridge crossing the Euphrates River. We came under attack from the hospital just west of of the bridge. Ended up taking that hospital over after two days and found several of the pow’s gear inside.
I heard several rumors of their unit being beyond sloppy but I’m a Marine and did not work directly with any of them so…🤷🏼♂️
We did locate several stripper clips which showed they were attempting to load mags while being attacked. Hmmmmm
Also heard they complained of rifles jamming due to sand. Funny because we were trained how to clean and lube/not lube our weapons. Used pack covers at times just to prevent issues. I’m wondering what these soldiers were taught about desert warfare.

I still recall how the media labeled her a "War Hero" when they pushed the narrative that she fought to the last bullet and took them down and was captured but in fact, she was captured after she got knocked out and never fired her rifle.

Close to the same thing with operation red wings and Marcus Luttrell. The Afghan who sheltered him found a full compliment of magazines in his plate carrier.
Luttrell literally fled at first contact. He’s a liar and a fraud.
Ya. It's unfortunate what she went through and glad she made it home. But let's not pretend she accomplished anything lol. A private in the army got lost and captured and had to be rescued.
The Army brass ginned up the fairy tale fight story and the media blew it even more out of the truth realm.
