This is easily one of the best Johnny Hiland interviews I’ve seen. Just to touch on Johnny’s statements at the end.. people bash and name call Johnny Hiland on the internet?? Johnny is the most kind hearted gentlemen you’d ever want to meet, on top of being one of the most technically versatile guitarists in the world without a single shred of ego. I’m a better guitar player for having found Johnny’s music. Thank you for this video Cody, and thank you Johnny for just being you, the world of music is a much greater place because of you.
Thank you for that compliment, and I could not agree with you more. Johnny is a genuinely good person and he would do just about anything to help someone. He has helped me with my playing so much, as he has so many guitarists. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Right? Unfortunately there will always be those people out there, but I can tell you from personal experience that Johnny is a genuinely kind person who just loves the guitar and sharing music with others.
Hopefully once we are past COVID-19, Johnny plans to be back on the road playing shows and doing clinics. I hope you get that chance. He’s a wonderful person!
For sure! He’s got such a great setup at his place now. In fact, his new album that just came out (Chatham Sessions) has a pic of his monitor room on the front cover.
Fantastic interview Cody, well done!! Johnny is an incredibly versatile guitarist who's sound is so distinct!! I love Johnny for waking me back up to playing guitar. I was turning 65 and feeling kind of bummed out for it and then I saw a Johnny video on UA-cam. I couldn't believe the sound I was hearing and went out and bought a guitar and started practicing and following Johnny!! I have become good friends with Johnny and his wife and they have made my life so much more rewarding. Johnny also has the love of the Lord in him, very strongly and he is a wonderful human to talk to. I have taken 2 live lessons with Johnny and they count as some of the best things I have done in my life! I owe Johnny my respect and love as he made me a new person who now could give a hoot about my age and loving the Lord for bring me to Johnny. The guitar has also become my best friend during this craziness we are going through. Thank you Cody for such a great and informative interview. Johnny is the man!! Thank you so much from Costa Rica!!!
Christopher, thank you for sharing your story. This is the kind of stuff that makes music and guitar so cool. I am so happy that Johnny was able to bring you back to the guitar, and you are right -- he and his wife are wonderful people. This comment made me very happy to read!
@@CodyJungGuitar Thanks Cody. My friends in Costa Rica say that I am Johnny's biggest "groupie" and I tell them I am proud of that!!! hahahaha . I'll keep my eyes out for more interviews from you. Have a great day and stay safe!!!
Brother Johnny is still one of the best guitarists ever and also an amazing human being, he did so much for me and I always would do anything for him, I'm so honored to call him my friend as he always were one of my favorite guitar players since the minute one I've heard him play ! Thank you for sharing this beautiful interview
Really enjoyed this interview Cody. Amazing quality! I watch Johnny's Facebook live every Sunday. He is a total hero to me and it's always a privilege to hang out virtually!
Thank you! Yeah, I catch the FB live videos when I can too! I think that those live videos are great for being able to connect with fans, and Johnny’s are particularly awesome.
I had the privilege of meeting Johnny after one of his shows at Acme Feed & Seed in downtown Nashville a couple years ago. Upon meeting him, you would have thought we had been best friends for ten years. He was so gracious. As soon as he found out I was a guitar player, he immediately took off his guitar and slung it over my shoulder excited for me to check out what he was playing (he had recently started playing Kiesel guitars). He was nothing but class through and through.
Your description of Johnny is spot on. I have no trouble imagining everything you just wrote! He’s such a fantastic person and is happy to talk guitars with anyone. Thank you so much for watching and sharing this story!
Johnny and Kim are dear friends, and I have known Johnny for many years, Johnny deserves everything good that he is blessed with. I don't get to see him as much as I did in Tennessee, but he and Kim, are always in our thoughts. He is an extremely talented musician, and one of the kindest people one will ever meet, he and Kim have worked hard to get where they are, and my wife and I wish them continued success....:-)
Johnny is honestly one of the most down-to-earth people you will ever meet. He is a genuine “what you see is what you get” kind of guy, and he is the first person to acknowledge where he comes from and the people that helped him along the way. A true gentleman and a great guy!
Johnny is WAY better than nashville. He proved that it's all image. Nothing about being a musician. He blows ANY main stream so called guitarist, from hard rock to country, he does it all. I've been playing over 40 years and still learn from this man. God bless you johnny and keep the music coming. Peace.
It's impossible to dislike this guy. He's just so positive. I've never been a fan of country music (I grew up with my mom listening to popular country junk like Billy Ray Cyrus) but I could listen to Johnny play for hours. Speaking of which, the riffs at the end were way too short. I love the sound where he pre-bends the string to hit a note then slowly bends down to the original note. Seriously great stuff.
I’m really glad that people can see how great of a guy Johnny is. He really is such a positive person and so awesome to hang out with. Also, I have so much footage of us jamming after we finished the interview. I should definitely go back through it and upload more at some point soon!
I’m very glad to hear that he’s doing so well with the workouts💪💪. Mister Hiland you’re looking great. You’re an inspiration not only as a musician but as a splendid human being.
Johnny - most people do not realize what a huge challenge and achievement it is to make the changes you are making. Congratulations and berst wishes, sir.
One of the things that I think I should have highlighted more in this video was the fact that Johnny switched from a flatpick to thumbpick. That’s no small task! Not to mention the weight that he’s lost and the changes to his career. You’re very right! Thanks for watching!
There's an extra joy to be had with releasing your own music, beyond what he said. When you release your own music, you own all of it. When you release music through a Record Label, *they* own all of it, and not just that. They basically own you as well.
What a top notch gentleman!! Best interview of Johnny I’ve ever seen!! Johnny is such an inspiration and such a positive in a world that at times can be very negative!! Glad they’re are people like Johnny in the music business!! Thanks for a great interview Cody!!
Thank you so much! And yes, Johnny is such a positive force in the guitar community. Every time he and I talk, I am honestly inspired by him in so many ways.
Thank you! And you’re right, Johnny is such a fantastic guy. He’s so fun to hang out with and talk to, and he’d give you the shirt off his back if you were in need.
I'm surprised there's only 694 "likes" in the 3 years this has been published. I just became aware of Johnny Hiland about a year ago. I just discovered his skills go far beyond Chicken-Pickin' today (in a different YT video which brought me here). He does seem to be a large hearted person who is graced with incredible talent. Thanks for the interview.
He's looking great. Sounds like he's taking working out seriously. I hope he stays healthy. What a great guy. Amazing player. Good interview. Thanks for the video.
Johnny is such a good soul, he just exudes joy in music. So glad to see Johnny has lost some weight, I worried about his health because I want him in the world as long as possible. Great, great interview, thanks for posting.
I’m a metal shredder/djent guy and something about Johnny is just alluring. He’s so humble and happy. He has this aura to him. His playing is incredible and so is his work ethic. How can you not like this guy?
I love this comment. Seriously. I cannot agree with you more. I don’t think there’s any reason to dislike a musician based on the style of music that they play, but especially in Johnny’s case. He’s such a genuine, humble, and friendly dude. The fact that he’s always willing to stop and talk to other guitar players and help them out with whatever they’ve got going on, and do it with a smile makes him one of the most endearing people.
Oh wow, thank you so much! That’s awesome! Well… No spoilers, but keep an eye out on the channel for more content with Johnny in the next couple months! Haha.
Oh yeah! The interview with Tommy was great. I really hope we can get him back in the channel next year. I have a really fun video in mind, but he is one of the busiest guys in the business!
Thank you, Bill! The camera guy is actually my brother Clint. He’s great, and this has been an awesome project for the two of us to work on together so far.
Guys like Johnny should be headlining the CMA awards and be on the top of the country charts. People are just delusional not having this man in the forefront of the genre. JH will go down as one of if not the greatest to pick up the guitar along with hendrix, vaughan, albert, bb, freddie etc.
He truly is an amazing person to be around. When you sit across from him and play a song, it's pretty easy to get lost in what you're doing because you just want to listen to him the whole time! Haha. Thanks for watching!
The first time I ever saw Johnny was on a clip with Brent Mason, and I have been following him ever since. Thank you so much for this interview. I agree with Johnny on his view of not staying in "one lane", as I myself growing up, have liked everything from Bluegrass to Classic Rock, Blues, Etc...and I love it all. I am a drummer, but like playing guitar as well. I would like to find out where to sign up to get some lessons from Johnny. Such a great guy, and inspiration !!!! Again, thank you so much !!!!
Johnny really is amazing, right?? Thank you so much for watching! I would definitely encourage you to get some lessons from Johnny if you're interested. He is a fantastic teacher. I learn so much from him every time we pick together!
great interview ! I discovered Johnny Hiland pretty recently when trying to learn about those amazing country guitar licks. I am just so great full he's just an amazing player but more so a great teacher and person Thanks for the great interview ....new subscriber :-)
Thank you so much!! Johnny is most definitely an amazing teacher and person, alongside being one of the best country pickers on the planet. Could not agree more!
Johnny makes me want to be a chicken picker since i heard is music a couple years ago. I´m from Argentina, and the thing of many of you didn´t know but you can imagine, is that this style almost doesn´t exist in this part of the continent... but cats like him, Thom Bresh, his father Merle, Chet, Brent Mason, Jerry Reed and i can go on and on, are such and inspiration to learn the thumpicking thing and the chicken pickin. I´m 29 and i play since 18, playing and recording from rock n roll to technical death-thrash, crust-grindcore, fusion, jazz and now i´m into this... so the only thing i can a say is a big THANK YOU JOHNNY for the inspiration, and make him know that his art came across the lands to change my life... i hope meet him someday!! great great interview! and you win a new subscriber man! Greetings!!!
Thank you for subscribing! It is so awesome that you are learning this kind of guitar playing. Too cool! Johnny is such a great guy, and if you ever plan a trip to the States in the future, hopefully you can do it when we are doing a guitar clinic or show and you can meet him! Also, I hope to do an interview with Thom soon, so if you’re a fan of the Breshman, keep an eye out for that!
@@CodyJungGuitar Very well done Cody!! Loved the topics you were talking about. I love Johnny a lot and this was great to watch. Thanks from Costa Rica!!!
Informative interview, and extra cool after having watched a great Don Kelley interview w Zac Childs. I had an enjoyable phonecall w Kenny Thurman about his studio just today. Real nice guy like Johnny said, lives a half hour north of here.
Thank you! Kenny is a good dude for sure. I’m sure you know this, but he helped Johnny get his home studio off the ground. Also, if you’re a Zac Childs fan, he and I did a similar interview on my channel. You should check it out. He’s a good buddy!
Bravo, Johnny. When I first saw Johnny on a vid, much heavier, but a guitar virtuoso, I love the way he plays, but health wise, he’s a time bomb. Now at 140 # lighter, we’re gonna have Johnny around to enjoy his guitar skills for a while longer. BRAVO! I’m a big fan!
Yeah, I've gotta say, when I saw him when we got together for this interview, I was blown away by how much weight he had lost. He's still working on it too!
@@CodyJungGuitar Yesss! I always admire anyone who can turn the corner and get back on the healthier road. I know it's not easy but it is soooo worth it. I put the plug in the jug 34 years ago. tough at first; easy now. I would have been pushing up daisies for a long time now. Best to you. Great interview.
Nice job with this interview! Just found your channel today and can't wait to dig into the rest of what you've published. The Bender Bunker is definitely a subscriber!
Awesome!! Thank you for subscribing. I hope to have more interviews done soon. COVID makes it a bit tricky, but I think we've figured out a way to make it work. Meanwhile, I have some fun amp demos and stuff coming soon.
Thank you! Also, it does make me very sad that I’ll never get to meet or see Danny Gatton play. He passed when I was only four years old. Johnny has some great Gatton stories, though!
Man, about all that people criticizing Johny nonsense? Best thing internet did is it gave voice to a common person. The worst thing internet did is it gave voice to a common person. Johny is so awesome, makes me wanna drive down and visit Chatham, VA.
Johnny is a genuine friend and a really good human being. The fact that he’s one of the best guitarists on the planet is just icing on how good of a person he already is.
Who wouldn't love Johnny Hiland.:) I've seen a few of his interviews before and had a bet with myself to see how long it would take for him to drop a product endorsement. It took 47 seconds... which includes an intro. :) I'll watch the rest of the video now... sorry !!!
Johnny’s the man! He should be coming by the house in about a month, so hopefully we can shoot a video or two for the channel before we head out to do some fishing, haha.
What good dude so humble smart interesting and honest ...I never have heard of John..just saw him killing it on utube doing his thing the last week or so ..and sharing is the secret I think help everyone don't be selfish you all learn
Ah man, I’m so glad you found Johnny recently! Your description of him is spot on. He is the most open dude and always willing to help and give advice to guitar players. Completely unselfish. Thanks for watching!
@@CodyJungGuitar yeah mate sharing the love .already showed my cousin we grew up together playing music same thing just being open teaching each other ..deserves the wrap .Im going to check out his lessons..I've been playing for 30 years myself...play all styles well try to lol ..im sure I'll learn heaps and quickly . Might take me a life time 🤣🤣
That’s so great to hear. If anyone deserves to have his name shared far and wide, it’s Johnny. I would definitely recommend his online lessons, and it’s worth mentioning that he does one-on-one Skype lessons too it that’s something you’d want to do!
@@CodyJungGuitar Well, it's encouraging to me because I can play multiple instruments and am getting back into recording myself. I play like a 3rd grader compared to the worst Nashville player, but I can make a little noise. And his do-it-yourself approach appeals to me. Also, I don't listen to her music so much, but I like Billie Eilish for the same reason. Thanks for the reply! Have a great day. And remember, Christ died for our sins, was buried & rose again the 3rd day for our justification before God, according to the Bible.
I definitely understand where you’re coming from - being able to do an entire album while wearing every hat is no small accomplishment. That’s awesome that you’re doing the same thing!
@@CodyJungGuitar Thanks... It remains to be seen how far I get, but the creative process as well as learning how to make it sound professional has been fun this time around. People like you who conduct these interviews allows the insight into their thinking process and sometimes some little something they off-handedly reference is the little nugget I've been looking to find forever. Thanks.
Is it just me or does Johnny say this about every guitar company he goes with? PRS, Music Man Now these guys. Why does he keep switching? What happens to PRS, and Music Man? No matter what I love Johnny.
I definitely wouldn’t want to speak on Johnny’s behalf, but I can tell you that when he finds something he likes, he absolutely loves sharing it with others. Sometimes things don’t work out for different reasons, whether they be changes in management or with the company’s personnel, or just finding something that works even better for you. I’m really happy I’ve had a chance to get to know Johnny, and I can tell you he really appreciates fans like yourself who are along for the long haul regardless of the changes!
I talked to Johnny after the fact and I think I commented the answer elsewhere on here back when the video came out. I can’t remember with certainty now, but I want to say it was Tom Quayle.
I don’t know why, but I always smile just listenin to Johnny talk. What a great guy

great interview !
God bless ya John
keep the music alive
Johnny’s the man!
Yess!! The one I’ve been waiting for. Thanks Brother!! Gonna grab my guitar and popcorn.
Excellent! I hope you enjoy it. I think we covered some pretty interesting ground with a few of our topics.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the interview. That’s awesome! There are hopefully more interviews coming soon!
I'm happy for johnny. Coolest dude ever.
One of the nicest guys and great player!
Very true!
Johnny, you are a monster player and a truly kind human being....
Could not agree more!
Awesome interview with Johnny! I just found this channel and immediately subscribed:)
Awesome!! Thank you for subscribing. I hope to have more interviews done soon. COVID makes it a bit tricky, but I think we've figured out a way to make it work. Meanwhile, I have some fun amp demos and stuff coming soon.
glad to see johnny is still going strong!!!
Stronger than ever!
Looking Good Johnny. Great work on the weight loss. Keep going bro. 👍
Johnny never ceases to insert ads in every interview LOL....
I'm more a blues dog than cat. A great interview.
Haha, well fortunately I don’t think the blues discriminates on that basis. Thanks for watching!
Just a humble ..... giving guy..... who can play as good as the best of fhem
Great video, great guy!!
Thank you!!
What a cool guy Johnny is!
He definitely is!
wonderful ...
From the UK Johnny its Alan Holldsworth but your a legend mate superb player.
appreciate you johnny!
fantastic interview!
Thank you!!
I can tell Johnny is saved, such a great guy and testimony. People wonder why he’s so nice? It’s because he has Jesus, and it shows.
Great job ! Nice to hear Danny Gatton mentioned. He would have been a great interview.
Johnny is a national treasure
Agreed!
Amazing interview
Thank you!!
I like this guy.
Wow this man is a incredible musician but a better human being, so called stars could learn a lot on how to treat people from this man
Johnny is a genuine friend and a really good human being. The fact that he’s one of the best guitarists on the planet is just icing on how good of a person he already is.
Very Good Cody
Thank you so much! Hope you've enjoyed it!
Awesome interview
Thank you!
Great player and nice dude!
Definitely!
Who wouldn't love Johnny Hiland.:) I've seen a few of his interviews before and had a bet with myself to see how long it would take for him to drop a product endorsement. It took 47 seconds... which includes an intro. :) I'll watch the rest of the video now... sorry !!!
Great interview
Thank you!!
Johnny’s great!
Johnny’s the man! He should be coming by the house in about a month, so hopefully we can shoot a video or two for the channel before we head out to do some fishing, haha.
Cool dude. Nice interview.
Thank you so much!
Congrats on the weight loss !! Go Johnny Go !!
He looks so much healthier these days. Gotta love it.
Definitely! At the time of this interview, Johnny was down 140 pounds.
Betting the name of the English guy who slipped his mind was Albert Lee
You know, that part slipped my mind until you just reminded me. I think I’ll shoot Johnny a text soon and ask him who he was referring to.
@@CodyJungGuitar I'm guessing he meant Tom Quayle
@@ralphjohns5179 I believe he may have meant Allan Holdsworth.
The obvious thought would go to Albert with Mark Knofler being a possibility too.
@@ralphjohns5179 I was thinking the same thing... dude is a BEAST!
Johnny & kim , are great people..went to the Ryman with them & friends, put us up for the night..Best chicken picker in the world..
Their generosity is wonderful. Truly genuine people!
Awesome dude
Johnny definitely needs a follow-up interview on here soon…
Beautify done Cody.
Thank you, Sage!
@@CodyJungGuitar you're welcome. Check my new podcast show.
@@benadoeffects I already have it saved and I cannot wait to listen to it!
@@CodyJungGuitar great thank you.
amazing interview! did the new Johnny Hiland come out yet?
Not yet, but it’s coming any day now. I can’t wait!
@@CodyJungGuitar thank you man! I keep looking out for it ! Thanks for this awesome interview !
I love that he used his normal speaking voice
PROUD OF YOU JOHNNY 👏 I lost over 200 pounds
God bless Johnny and his quest to lose the lbs. He's looking good!
He really does!
34:34 Just bought in on Apple Music about 5 minutes ago. 10:23 pm
Fantastic! I have been really enjoying Johnny's new album as well. He did an amazing job with it in my opinion.
Thanks.
Wow, thank you for saying that! I’m so glad people are responding so well to these interviews. I have a lot more lined up, so stay tuned!
*JOHNNY HILAND IS THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER*
It's hard to argue with that! Haha.
Im kinda sad that Johnny has moved out of Nashville....
Great
Thanks!
Was Chris buck the English guitarist he was talking about?
I talked to Johnny after the fact and I think I commented the answer elsewhere on here back when the video came out. I can’t remember with certainty now, but I want to say it was Tom Quayle.
@@CodyJungGuitar thanks for the reply dog. Love the content. Excited to get my harmony amp back maybe I’ll maken a video too
For sure! You’ll have to let me know.
