  • MIT Mathematics PhD candidate and NFL offensive lineman John Urschel speaks at celebration of MIT in Washington, DC, on April 13, 2017.
After discovering a love of mathematics as an undergraduate at Penn State, Urschel came to MIT and found “home.” He studies spectral graph theory, numerical linear algebra, and machine learning, and he is proud to be an MIT Dean of Science Fellow. “[My fellowship] puts me in the very best position to do the best work I can,” Urschel said. “I hope that I can make contributions in mathematics that justify the great investment [MIT] has made in me.”

Thank you, John Urschel, for unabashedly following your twin pursuits, football and math, and for your unrelenting passion for math. Thank you also for dispelling common myths about what mathematics is all about.

In another video titled "every child should play team sports", John Urschel voices his opinion, with which I can't agree. Not every child should play team sports, because not every child can. This would be a large disregard for a child's personality. Forcing a kid to do something that an adult thinks is good, is selfish. There are personalities that don't do well in a team environment, and let's not force them to be a "team player". There are children who are content to run their own show and being part of a team can break them. I think this is rather a complex topic, and making statement that "every child should be part of a team" is overstated. Some amazing athletes (skiers, tennis players, etc), professors, inventors, were loners and are loners, and that's what makes them great.

I strongly agree with you, Anna! People are diverse and we shouldn't generalize that every child should play

Your use of the word "force" here makes this entire comment silly, irrational and unworthy of being taken seriously, since no one said anything about "forcing" anyone to play sports, and yes, every child should be introduced to sports, it may not be for all, but let them be introduced, and if they don't like it, then they don't like it.

Football is so ingrained in the African-American community that this brother seems like a leprechaun! That's how football has destroyed us as a race of people! STOP ENTERTAINING RIFLE WITH YOUR ATHLETIC AGILITY..
