  • John Urschel has spent his life pursuing passions in two vastly different worlds: mathematics and football. The former Baltimore Ravens lineman, who simultaneously pursued a PhD in math while playing in the NFL, talks to Dana Jacobson about why math won out in the end.

      Should those classrooms show his black mom... but hide his dad... a Lilly white Canadian surgeon? Why would generally pure black inner city youths be inspired by someone with completely different genes than they have? Or do you think lying helps kids?

    Do you think he got paid not to say anything by the nfl. That would have looked bad for the sport if he did. He said the concussion stop him from doing math. What does that say to students in college playing today? If they get hit, they could fail an exam or a semester.

      Joe James Experiment Other former Players like Chris Borland went public against the NFL. Urschel is very smart, he also knew that Football can cause head injuries, but he also knows that the media overhypes CTE studies. He could have said something against the nfl, if he wanted to, but why should he?

    • @broadcast685
      @broadcast685 5 років тому

      kim goalie he should speak out against the nfl because he said his concussion impaired his ability to do math for two months. How is that ever okay? Kids play this sport too and may be experiencing the same symptoms has him.

    • @kimgoalie
      @kimgoalie 5 років тому

      Joe James Experiment thank God he could recover and has his normal capability again. He knew the dangers of playing the sport, so why should he speak out. Nobody forced him to play. And I agree children shouldn‘t play football anyways.

      @@amaxlite It is a real issue, but not for the reason you said, which is just a right-wing (or should I say, “white-wing”) talking point. Teachers have tended not to encourage Black and Latino (as well as female) students as far as fostering interest in STEM fields. As far as “lowering standards” (which doesn’t apply to John Urschel, to be clear), I’ll take the kid who didn’t have all the privileges, opportunities, and encouragement, and scored a bit lower on their SATs or whatever over the kid with the higher score who grew up privileged, got to take prep courses and private tutoring, never had their abilities or work ethic questioned simply because of their race, etc.
