@@thedeal86 It can. Moreover Orthodoxy is not originally from Russia. It can be isolated and if it couldn't Kirill wouldn't would not be so mad about it. Lithuania and Romania have taken steps before towards that. When Ukraine started to take steps towards church independence Putin and Kirill were pissed about it. Short answer is yes, sovereign countries can do that. Moreover the modern Russian Orthodox Church is heavily influenced by communist. It was Stalin who revived it and to this day, it is being managed by communist posing as Christians. Plus, corruption is behind the construction of new Churches in Russia. It's good that churches are being built, but there is no need for it to be coupled with corruption. Who in their right mind would want their church to be lead by KGB or by it's modern name FSB communists?

If the west wages war against Orthodox church, they are waging war against all of us, Bulgaria, Greece, Armenia, Georgia, Macedonia, Serbia and many more. There is no division when it's about religion, we all fight together with Russia. Orthodox Christianity begins in Kiev and Ukraine didn't exist back then.

Regarding the close relationship of the Russian patriarch to Putin and his cronies, this is not surprising. During Nasser's regime in Egypt, the ranking Russian Orthodox clergyman in Egypt was a KGB agent. Unfortunately, this church has a history of working with the regime running Russia.

When I lived in a small village in Cyprus, a Greek Priest would enter the house of every villager, every month, with a bucket of holy water which he spayed liberally around the house. The householder would drop some coins in the bucket and the priest would leave uttering a blessing.
That priest is a thief! And I'm saying this as an Orthodox Christian.
I think this monthly ritual augmented his meagre salary.

The large number of soldiers killed during the invasion of Ukraine (more than 50,000 so-called "cargo 200" estimated to be worth 10 billion dollars to return to Russia) and now approaching its critical mass (60,000), the war has become a numbers game for the brave army of Ukraine. There are so many dead and wounded that for each Russian soldier it will be like "tossing a coin" on who lives, "he or whoever is by his side", then panic and despair will take over that Russian soldier and surely the entire army will collapse completely out of control!
The Russian Soldier has no support, no ammunition and worse still has no hope but to surrender to save his life! There are more than 30,000 encircled soldiers that will collapse in a few days and Ukraine needs to invent a new strategy on how to handle so many Russian prisoners of war.
Russia will never be the same, now there are maimed, lame, blind, crazy, dead, widows, orphans, sick and poorer people by the thousands! without counting a Country full of shame!

Early in my religious walk, I attended a Russian Orthodox Church in Calgary, invited by woman I had met. I found it a caring community, but very inward looking and incapable of endorsing any other part of Christendom , which is quite expansive beyond their particular vein of Orthodoxy. Russian Orthodox represents approx 80 million out of 220 million total in Orthodox. Yet part of its DNA is to hold to a kind of exclusive 'correctness' in preserving the Christian faith. As seeker back then I asked an important question, at least to me, which was 'so if you cannot speak to the authenticity of any other Christian group, then what about my own first experiences as Protestant, and also my time spent attending the Roman Catholic Church"? They said that they had no way to comment on that. That experience was a complete contrast to the Roman Catholic Church, and a key reason of why I chose to become Catholic. This myopic mentality of this small Russian Orthodox community I spent some time with, clearly is consistent with what we see happening in Russia today. This type of exclusivism, is ripe territory for others to manipulate to prop up their ambitions as Putin has done.
Other Orthodox, in particular of Ukraine, are entirely justified to separate themselves from this grave error that the Russian Orthodox Church has fallen into. Whether Russian Orthodox want to recognize it or not, or the legitimacy of it, there are prayers of over 2 billion other Christians, who support a path to peace, and stand opposed to this so-called holy war that Patriarch Kirill has spoken of, in great misuse of his role.
Kirill has stepped into the heart and soul of the 'evil one'. Let us not hesitate to call this out. He is actually against real Christianity

It is no coincidence that the head of Mordor's Orthodox Church is a former KGB colleague of Putin. It's all part of Putin's strategy that believers are also kept in line by the church. In return, the Orthodox Church enjoys the privileges of trading and importing cigarettes and alcohol, of course tax-free. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church has become a billionaire as a result. Putin says he's no longer an atheist, but that's just political calculation, because he instrumentalizes faith and the church to stay in power, since many orcs have professed their faith again since the end of the Soviet Union. Traditionally, the church has had great influence in Mordor, and the tsars took advantage of that. Even the Communist Party has not been able to fully implement atheism as many have practised their faith in secret.
Putin's utter terror of dying says volumes about his spiritual health and lack of personal relationship with Jesus Christ as his personal savior. Jesus has certainly not been invited into Putin's heart, he needs to lower himself and repent.

The upper echelons of the country have a strange ambiguity about who they are and where they belong. The general population detaches from politics entirely. There are very good reasons for the separation of church, judiciary and state.
Not according to Trump and Cons and Right Wing nut cases; and not according to his "genius" friend KGB col. Putin, his friend and former KGB man who's now leading the Russian Orthodox Church. These ultra Leftist Russians/Soviet folks and these ultra Right Wing nationalists... both want THEIR religion, a certain sect of the Christian church, to be in charge of the government, politics, economics, science, morality, etc.

A righteous church having members in a righteous state is even better. This is what the US founders intended. Not a state sponsored church but a state run by moral people answerable to God and a nation of humble people forcing their leaders to be answerable to a moral God. The intent behind "separation" was not to remove God from Government but to prevent a faithless government from controlling the church.

You may want to look into "Patriarch Kyril's" background as a KGB agent, and his work in the West, specifically in Geneva, beginning in 1972. So we have a perfect alliance here, between Putin an Kyril, of old school KGB agents. All these elements came out post 1991, with many archives released precisely in Ukraine. The Ukraine Orthodox Church got rid of its Soviet agents, the Russians did not.

Besides, the pope is the head of the Church, but there's literary another billion of Catholics besides him. A huge portion of the help offered to Ukrainians was organised or facilitated through churches and parishes in Poland, I wouldn't be surprised that the same is true in other countries that accepted refugees.
In terms of messaging you I would point to bishops in many countries that have condemned Russia such as bishop Gądecki (president of Polish Episcopal Conference) in Poland or cardinal Parolin in the Holy See (he is Vatican's Secretary of State).
Finally, a lot of people think that papal infallibility applies to everything that popes say, but that's only the case for very strict doctrinal issues. Popes can be biased, popes can be wrong, popes can be wildly off the mark such as (in my humble opinion) Francis in this case.

Church and Country Governance should/must be separate in operation world wide! The Russian Church wanting to have influence beyond their Spiritual jurisdiction have found themselves being isolated as a Church on the world stage. They can not play both cards of influence and think they will retain respect and trust of all.
