- Vladimir Putin's victory in last week's Russian presidential elections came as no surprise. Putin has spent much of the past two decades building an enduring and loyal following in Russia, and alliances with some of the country's most powerful institutions - none, perhaps, more important that the Russian Orthodox Church, which has fully embraced his leadership.
It's all part of a dramatic turnaround for the Church, which just 30 years ago was only a marginal force in Russian society. The Soviets had sought to stamp out organized faith, stripping religion from education, arresting clergymen, and ordering the destruction of many of Russia's grand cathedrals, including one, Christ the Savior, that was demolished to make room for a public pool.
But under Putin, the Church has been making a comeback. More than 70% of Russians today identify as Russian Orthodox, up from 30% at the end of the Soviet Union. And huge swaths of land have been transferred back to religious ownership, with thousands of new churches being built or restored -- at a rate of almost three a day, by church figures. And Putin, by building loyalty among the leaders of a cherished institution, has arguably been the greatest beneficiary of this largesse.
VICE News Tonight went to Moscow to ask Church leaders, and experts on the role of religion in society, how the church's resurrection has played into Putin's gambit for everlasting power.

You can criticize all you want, but the final conclusion is that Christianity is thriving in Russia because of this cooperation between church and state, while Christianity is dying rapidly in the West and is replaced by sin at alarming rates.

Christianity in Russia is thriving so much, the circumstances of Patriarch Alexei’s death are not even discussed publicly despite or maybe because of all the incongruities surrounding it. Just as Saint Augustinus of Hippo refused to bow to Rome as he only bows to the one Peter bowed to, not Peter a good Christian should fear this unholy union born out of an empire, not the church. The church shall rule all the earth and there certainly is no justice in government without the church but she should never become an instrument of power, as long as the army, the legislature, the courts are all controlled by the state not the church directly it is an abomination and the church would be better off proclaiming the endless good of City of God against the wicked City of the Pagans. We have been corrupted by original sin, if the west shall fall or remain shall make no difference but a church which praises wars that in no way are just wars by Saint Augustine’s definition is making a mistake...
For worshippers of Christ in Russia, why do you say it is thriving? Church attendance rates are still very low. Jesus said to beware of the false teachers who come to you in sheep’s clothing. The Catholic Church during medieval times was corrupt and led the masses astray.

They continued to consecrate bishops and ordain priests in that line until present time. Henry wanted the Church of Rome to be the Church of England without major changes in doctrine with the exception of the scope of papal power over the affairs of England. The English Reformation was more political than theological. Even Luther didn't start out to change major doctrines of the Church but moved in that direction with the growing resistance of the Papacy to bring abourlt reform.

Not to mention the countless ways the Russian Orthodox Church goes against Bible teachings. They do so by using idols in their worship, being involved in politics, and blessing soldiers to do well in warfare.

Secular governments are not miserable, if anything they are truly freeing and more just than any state sponsored religious one (i.e Saudi Arabia), Atheist states like the USSR are the issue ones. The priest they interviewed was correct about the fact the the separation of church and state is alien to Orthodoxy and has always been, starting from the Byzantine Empire. I used to think of that as abhorrent, but looking at what atheism has wrought here in the west, I'm starting to change my mind on that and I'm also thinking about renouncing my atheism and joining the Orthodox Church here in Finland.
This is basic Vice news stuff, trying to make Christianity and especially Orthodox Christianity as well as Russia somehow sinister. Sure there are many issues in Russia on their politics, but I would trade their issues with the issues we are facing here in the west in a heartbeat!
I’d suggest you try a Tridentine Mass Catholic Church. The Orthodox are too busy infighting with their schisms.

Hi, real person here. I am an American Christian asking for the prayers of all who read this, both Western and Orthodox Christians. I have a profound respect for The Beauty and Truth of Orthodoxy. I pray that the Orthodox Church in Russia is strengthened and that they can resist all the various pressures that will certainly face them.
To all Orthodox Christians and Russians, I apologize for what our media and government sometimes does. Russia is not the only nation with corruption at the Top sometimes. (But i am thankful that we have freedoms to voice opinions like that, and that is one of the many reasons I am proud to be an American, just like Russians should be proud to be Russians). There is rich greatness in each people group on Earth. God made us different because together we all make one fantastic people. A lot of times, people want to make another culture just like there's. But that is not biblical. God came down and met us where we were. So we should reach out and love other Christian cultures as brothers and sisters in Christ, Rather than try to change them to be just like us.
Also, Theologically I hope that you can realize that although western Christianity sometimes seems like a mess, there is truth and beauty in it also for those who seek God whole heartedly. Christ is truly in our midst as well! I think we are two lovely sides of the same coin. Yes Orthodoxy has remained more Grounded, but not all western innovations have been so bad.
The Truth is at the end of the day, we have to remember that it is just people who are on the other side of the world. Our governments might not get along, but we people have no reason to fight. We all just love our families, work to pay the bills, and many of us just want to worship our Holy God. Therefore we must speak out to our governments and DEMAND peace. Tell them that we do not want to keep fighting each other, and our governments will have to listen to us if we all speak out. We do not want to fight with Russia. Russia is a beautiful country and is increasingly becoming a Christian nation again. (At least this is what I perceive).
Also please pray for America. America was once a Christian nation, but now we commit acts of aggression. We have been very militaristic for the last 100 years, something I pray that we will calm down, and we are abandoning traditional Christian morality for liberalism, atheism, and all manner of sins. And then the "right" is often judgmental of others and sometimes does more harm than good as well.
America needs your prayers. I will pray for Russia as well. Please share this message with your friends and family.

Church power before 1917 was definitely based on the patronage of the Czars and not primarily on the power vested in them by the laity. Similarly, the power of the emperor was enhanced by the Church's theology concerning the emperor and support for the emperor. The two are a symfonia and collaboration. So with the emperor and state overwhelmed, the Church too was similarly overcome. The current situation is the traditional one except that the long staying almost President for life Putin takes the place of the Czars. Nothing extraordinary. Business as usual.

I live in America and a confessing Lutheran. America is post Christian and the culture is decaying rapidly. The Russian people will be better off in the coming years than Americans will.
