There is an old saying that real patriots ask questions. They don't just blindly follow patriotic slogans, flags, symbols and place their hands on their hearts & sing the national anthem. They ask where their country is headed and why and whether their country is living up to its stated ideals.

@justasplanned8023 The irony is excruciating, isn't it?
We can even point to examples, reasons and solutions in other countries that objectively make them fairer, freer and more equal, and they effectively stick their fingers in their ears and say "lalala, I'm not listening" because it's against their own, as well as their paymasters' short term financial interests.

No, it’s not a straw man. If somebody is proud of their nationality, it doesn’t require being grilled by James O’Brien in a patronising manner to explain why. It’s a personal thing, that may be hard to immediately articulate under pressure, but of course it’s only in this country that demands explanation of being proud of being the nationality here.
You know full well that JoB wouldn’t grill a someone in such a tone if they said they were proud to be black, or proud to be Caribbean let’s say. Think about it - do you think that would happen? And let’s say, a black man said to you that he was proud to be black - would you grill him in this tone as to why. I highly doubt that. And I’m not sure why you think *any* black person can list 10 things on the spot. Do you think people carry a card with notes or something?
And yes I watched the video. I just saw somebody not particularly articulate or prepared being patronised by JoB for saying he was proud of his nationality. @@paulroberts7544 I believe everyone is entitled to their own view. However, I believe if you're knowingly spreading views based off disinformation then this prevents the fairness of politics existing. So it doesn't matter if Bob the builder does this because they don't have a platform to abuse, they can say whatever and exist on the fringe if they see fit. But high ranking politicians and figures, who know the full story, purposely exaggerate truths for personal gain and I think this abuse should not only be banned in politics but there should actually be criminal repercussions for using the freedoms of this country against itself. I believe we make topics such as migration simplified and people are allowed to make sweeping statements which is then justified by the entitlement of being able to say whatever. We must preserve the right to free speech, and that includes questioning people who publicly abuse that right. Otherwise that right becomes meaningless and will cease to exist and it'll be too late when people realise this. I don't think this is something unique to either the left or right, its a disease within modern politics.

I'm proud of Britain for the times it has stood for something better. When we have set the standard. You know, things like fighting the Nazis. Taking in refugees from countries that would otherwise have murdered them. Things like being the instigator and key nation in the formation of the European court of human rights. Having a health system that WAS the envy of the world. Having an education system such that degrees from UK universities were seen as the highest standard across the world. I am not proud of the constant stream of ignorance, bigotry, general hatred and idiocy that passes for British culture a lot of the time. It used to be that we would look at groups like the national front, or Mosleys blackshirts, and they would be clearly something that was against the British way of life. Now we give them airtime, and offer them equal position in debate, where they in no way deserve it or have earned it. Much of the best of British achievement has come from immigrants, refugees and people who would anywhere else be downtrodden and hated. Surely we should be helping people up, not kicking them down?

It's politics. Your leaders are failing because British voters simply don't have the level of civic participation needed to hold them to account. That isn't the fault of Oxford, it's the fault of the entire British public. Take energy subsidies for example. Common economic sense would tell you that subsidizing household energy bills is a really bad idea, because not only is it wildly expensive at a time when interest rates are very high, it also doesn't encourage households to use less energy. If anything, it encourages more energy use, because bills aren't prohibitively expensive for the richest households. But, subsidies are what the British public wanted, so that's what they got. @@markwelch3564

Having served this country for 22 years, I am proud of the Military not just because I part of it, because the examples that people either refuse or do not want to see, working with other cultures and races (for want of a better word), prime example working with the Ghurkas, the fact we ended slavery (get no credit for that) the contributions to worlds inventions and innovations, although not all good for example the Guillotine and the Concentration Camp, as country we are mainly reminded of ALL the bad we have done and none of the good. Its like a perpetual British Guilt trip from generation to generation, as we have progressed after WW2, the NHS, the Welfare State, the Commonwealth, we get dragged backwards into the blame game and every generation has to shoulder the errors and mistakes of their great, great, great grandfather, no mention of the magna carta which a lot of countries have based their constitutions on, no mentions EVEN in our history classes of how British blockaded continents against slavery or that the UK had no slavery since William the Conqueror. Some of the achievements of the Peoples of this Island nations are never mentioned due to US as a people remembering ONLY the bad, only what we did wrong, not even how British Soldiers build play grounds, used to dig wells and build schools in Africa. I may not have been the best Soldier, but I was part of the ONLY professional Army in the World, that taught and trained other countries and now in a world of profits over people, having done and seen what I have, my pride in this country is now tarnished by those willing to destroy for greed.

Also, O'Brien, like most of the people who follow him, is entirely ignorant of history, and I'm not just stating that as a deflection; half of the history books he loves or authors who utilise him as if he's something of an expert are, in fact, just like him, another lefty journalist. One book worth noting is James Felton's 52. Britain were bellends. Anyone with a basic awareness of history would recognise how many inaccuracies exist in that book. I won't go over the entire book, but one thing I will notice is the mention of the Welsh not, which he blames on the English while never mentioning the Welsh not. It was not compulsory, and it was not utilised in the majority of Welsh schools. It was harshly criticised. The only way we knew it existed was because it was mentioned. In the blue books, don't get me started on his grasp of the Bengal and Irish famines. In all seriousness, most of his followers have one or two images of British history: one that does not exist, which is the nation of immigrants, which is factually incorrect, or that of evil, which, again, if anyone has an understanding of history, will know that British imperialism, while not right in any way, was the least oppressive and most developing of its time.

The UK is altogether one of the better (maybe top 25% globally) countries for these things. We're often losing focus reacting/overreacting to things as part of a game of enriching politicians and that's part of the reason we're slipping. We've also failed to go all the way in terms of democracy, and in enshrining free speech and other basic freedoms in a constitution.
