What is the worst policy a government has ever implemented? That is the phone-in question James O'Brien posed to his listeners today. Caller David isn't happy with this, pledging to bring some 'positivity' to the conversation.
This positivity, however, manifests as a seven-minute argument about immigration.

What amazes me is how some people blame immigration for our problems but don't look at the huge damage the Tories have done to this country.
People do as the media tells them. And the media has told people to hate immigrants for many years now

Hearing about immigration day in day out in the media does my head in. Instead of talking about the people who ran this country into the ground while filling their pockets on the way down, we are talking about people who wield no power and have no say. Its maddening but it keeps people voting against their own interests and that's why we talk about it so often.
Name one person who did this without also providing a service.

What really bothers me in this call (amongst a lot of other stuff too) is how he refers to people who have not yet entered this country as "illegal immigrants". If they haven't entered the country yet, they haven't done anything to warrant being called "illegal". It's dehumanising, and shows he has no interest in entertaining whether people have genuine asylum cases - he's ready to condemn them on the very nature of them being foreign

@@imSatnav..38,000 a year is no big wage ..Where do you live in a hut on a mountain top the city I live second biggest city outside of london 38,000 a year you could not survive a 2 bed apartment to rent start from £1,650 for a 2 bed small box to £6,000 a month but most average size apartment are around £2,000 a month..plus bills plus food etc..The houses to buy You don't get much for £600,000 only a 3 bed semi which needs gutting ..I agree with the government I would of put it at £60,000..Then only top professionals who can give something to the country not spongers..
I had a operation a few weeks ago and while I was in hospital I noticed on my ward of 8 men we had one foreign patient and at least 20+ foreign staff. Seems to me immigration is keeping the NHS together
I was in ICU in January in an induced coma for days. Nearly everyone who cared for me was, shall I say “foreign” .. they saved my life. I’m forever indebted.
When I had cancer in 2015 I think nearly every healthcare worker I interacted with was not born in Britain, including the highly-skilled surgeon who saved my life.
I have to agree entirely when I had my latest hip replacement the consultant surgeon was Iranian , His registrar was Nigerian and amongst the nursing staff were Irish , at least two W. Indian someone from Hong Kong and a Norwegian .
Most of the ancillary staff had come from either the subcontinent , Europe or the West Indies .
And these people have the cheek to say that immigrants are putting too much stress on the NHS .

Yes, imigration may well be "keeping the NHS together" and the reason for this is like other in other industries, the NHS has decided it is easier and cheaper to import people from abroad than to train the natives up to do those jobs. Those that are trained up face depressed wages (due to immigration) and often take up jobs in other countries that will pay them more money.
Immigration begets immigration. It is the solution to a problem it itself has caused.

I think the caller doesn't know that to apply for asylum, you literally have to reach the UK mainland, this island. That is the legal requirement, the legal route to get here. That is the main problem. The caller really needs to realise this, otherwise we will not move forward.
Unfortunately, the English government just prefers to dodge the bullet and smear the current situation and paint this immigration as illegal. I would love to say the current immigration is illegal and the government has got the right approach, but it simply isn't the case.

@@chatham43 This is the governments position but they've made it so that the ONLY way to claim asylum here in many cases is to get here and there's no legal way to do that. They stopped safe and legal routes and the numbers rose. I don't believe that's a coincidence but rather that it's a problem of the governments making.
If you are claiming asylum its not illegal, it doesn't matter how you get there. Any person can claim asylum in any country anywhere regardless of how they get there. It's really simple. Doesn't mean you will be granted it but you can claim it@@chatham43

Not only that, he had to wend his way past the call screener and wait to be connected to the studio whereupon he was aware that he would then be live on-air. So many opportunities to bail. So much time to formulate a cogent argument to proffer. And still David blundered on.

Still waiting to hear how 240 million being bunged to Rwanda & who knows how much in chartered planes not taking off, all the legal costs, without anybody going is of any use & that Rwanda can only take a couple of hundred per year-which will cost the British taxpayer more than it would to process them here, that Rwanda will be sending a number of their refugees here as part of the deal & that anybody sent there will be deported back to the UK if they get in trouble & that just a few years back Rwanda executed refugees for complaining about the quality of food & the Tories trying to rip up the human rights act for everybody. That is an enormous exaggeration. Rwanda has been given 300 million £ of UK taxpayers' money for sending ZERO asylum seekers there. Perhaps it would be useful for the UK taxpayers to know what Rwanda has spent the money on.
I would love to see James O'Brien in a real university-style formal debate against Douglas Murray or various other such figures, instead of the safe studio environment where callers are selected by his minders, and then he intimidates and tries to confuse.
I only wish that some callers had more time. Perhaps even a 10 minute timer counting down, so they knew how long they had to try and fight their corner. So many opinions, yet none based on fact as far as I could make out.

OR, lets say we built these homeless pods, these cost less than £20,000 each to build and run for 5 years.
With £155m we could build and house 7750 pods for people and keep them warm for 5 years.
Or build 775 homes and run them for 5 years, that's 775 families.

The Tory party and the mainstream press have done a great job in pushing the narrative of “illegal migration” rather than calling it what it is actually is which is people seeking asylum which is perfectly legal. There are no other routes for these people and once they arrive their claim is processed. Currently the process is ridiculously slow due to the Tory government, however around 70% of those seeking asylum are allowed to remain once their claimed is processed. The remaining 30% are not giving asylum and then have to leave, and if they don’t leave then can be classed as illegal”, as they have no right to remain. The general public need to be educated rather than accepting the lies that are spread by newspaper headlines or Tory spin.
