Funny story. When I was in the era between falling asleep and being awake, I saw a big, tough-looking man and he looked like he was going to beat the crap outta me. Because I knew I was dreaming, I was like "Come at me. I know you're not actually going to hurt me!" (in my dream). He punched me and I felt something hit me. I woke up. I have no medical problems.
Dear Papa Frank, this is the type of relationship that all people want, but few people are willing to admit. It sounds wonderful, not someone getting scared, I mean about the sense of security.
see now im scared, because the way i get out of nightmares is dying in some way. if whatever is chasing me gets me, and i die, boom i wake up. its happened before where i just let myself die by letting whatevers chasing catch me to escape.
death while dreaming could be worse than death while awake maybe is more painfull becuse your not entirly subconcius and we dont even know if will you wake before dying (im talking about death WHILE SLEEP not death caused by nightmare when you are asleep)
I always find it funny that I enjoy watching these theories so much because I'm someone who can't handle horror... I love the lore, but stick a horror game/movie in front of me, and I will run from it for my life, they give me nightmares, and yet, this, I can casually sit through and be like: Hmmm, yes, very interesting... Oooh, morbid...
I remember seeing my partner experince hallucinations from sleep deprivation, it was scary from my perspective so I can't imagine how horrifying it was for him. Its insane what our brains do to us.
Yeah it’s not fun. Very panic inducing and disorienting also usually the more stressed and sleep deprived you are the more sinister they get, just a rule of thumb

I thought the exact same thing. My boyfriend has had the exact same scenario of mysterious shadow like figure approaching the bed, climbing onto him, and nearly suffocating him on multiple occasions. It hasn’t happened to him in a while, but he has trouble sleeping because of it. Night terrors are also pretty similar but they don’t make you paralyzed. You feel like you’re awake because the dreams take place where you fell asleep. I experienced this when I was preschool age. According to my mother, she’s woken up to me screaming and trying to open the front door *in my sleep* .
The little chuckle i had with the “Bang-gugut” for “Bangungut” (Ba-ngu-ngut) 😂 I keep getting surprised with philippine stuffs just popping out of nowhere 😂😂
This is my theory: Perhaps, Dr Norberg is taking advantage of John’s condition. He may be creating these sounds and visuals, but claiming it is just his condition. Dr Norberg is gas lighting him. Then he makes his condition worse and worse so he can force John to give him excessive amounts of money for real treatment. However, as the condition is rare, Norberg doesn’t know about John likely dying in sleep. With no way to fix his condition and Norberg making it worse, John has worse, even more deadly nightmares eventually killing him in one way or another. But that’s just a theory... A Person Man theory! (If you have anything you think should be different or you want to point out, leave a comment. Let’s see if we can get Matpat to see this)
Given the general setting of the game, it appears to have taken place many years before the present (Think the 80s with the decor and electronics around). While it is most likely true that our protagonist does indeed have some matter of brain trauma, there might be reason to suspect that what is going on is actually an experiment. In some ways, this could be an unethical case study being conducted by a corrupted, amoral company, or maybe even one backed by the Feds (Think MKULTRA). It seems likely that our 'good doctor' may be introducing hallucinogenic drugs and other things in order to worsen the sleep deprivation itself to study their effects or the effects of severe sleep deprivation.
Hahahaha I alTeREd ThiS CoMMeNT sO yOu dOnT KnOW hoW I GOt sO MaNy lIKeS Jk of course I’m not a monster the comment was: Studies: “not sleeping is indeed fatal so please sleep 8 hours every day to Stay healthy” Schools: “3 take it or leave it”
Mihnea Iordan Yes, but also remember that after that he had to sleep for a whole 25 hours because he couldn’t take it anymore. Getting 1 hour of sleep a day is possible, but it’s not healthy.
Hey MatPat! I'm Hmong and I just wanted to say that the "H" in Hmong is silent! I found the Nightmare Death very interesting (and scary), being something that I've never heard of before.
the doctor reminds me of school nurses when they aren't taking their jobs seriously and say "just put an icepack on it" even if you dont have bruises and stuff
I had one if these nightmares, I could barely move, but I used every strength I had and managed to turn on the lights to my room only for me to wake up in another dream this time not so scary and more like melancholic as I woke up in a bright morning but, I woke up one more time and this time im really back at the real world and only 2 hours had actually passed since I went to bed
During training, I had to stay awake for 6 days without sleep, doing intensive physical exercise throughout. The body doesn't like this. I had hallucinations of men with dogs on top of a hill in front of us that wasn't even there. People sitting in trees waiting for us, and my fireteam partner repeatedly heard people talking when no one was around but us. The worst part was I started to do something called "mirco napping" where the brain effectively shuts off anything that isn't mandatory. I forgot where we were a couple times when walking and my section mates made me lay down for a couple minutes. 10/10 would recommend
I read somewhere that the reason that they do that is because sleep deprivation is a common torture method, so they train you to endure it so you don't crack and spill vital info.
When Jacksepticeye played the previous version of this game, he altered it to add to the Jacksepticeye Ego/Antisepticeye thing he was doing at the time. I’d appreciate it if he played the updated version of the game.
I would like to suggest a theory: How legal is Red's business in Animal Crossing? Are there any legal repercussions for selling fake paintings, etc. With New Horizons just released it could be interesting, plus there is only one AC video on this channel so far. Edit: Holy cow, I did not expect this to blow-up.
You know how when you “trip“ while sleeping and wake up and it’s supposedly because your heart rate was getting two low so your body jolts itself with adrenaline. What if they die during sleep because their body created a monster due to the ptsd and while asleep their body convinced itself it’s real and so when their monster “catches them” their body believes they’re dead and so slips away. No heart attack or anything it just slowly decreases until it stops (that might be a heart attack idk I’m not good at biology). Also the shadows and pressure on the chest sound like sleep paralysis.
It's actually your muscles that relax too much, that causes the feeling of vertigo, or the "falling" that makes you in return jolt. The adrenaline is secondary. If the person has a heart condition then it's more likely that the "jolt" feeling will vasodilate the veins to the point that the heart can't keep up with the flow anymore, kind of causing a heart attack? It's possible that John actually has PTSD from the thought of having a life-ending jolt of terror, like aneurysm, or less likely, a heart attack, so the jumpscare itself is what kills him Y'know, It's always just a theory at the end of the comment.
That actually happened to me. I was like 14 and I had a dream where it felt like someone was pushing down on my chest and I remember grabbing it in my dream and waking up holding what I thought was a hand but there are nothing.
That second story, the one from Wes Craven, sounds like a textbook case of sleep paralysis, where basically you're 'awake' and aware of your surroundings, but your subconscious is still very active which results in visual and auditory hallucinations as well as the sensations of being unable to move and having a weight upon you. Also, killer nightmares? No problem for me as I'm an active lucid dreamer.
To me, that second “nightmare deaths” story just sounds like an average case of sleep paralysis. First he wakes up, and his room is the same with a shadow in the corner. Then it starts to move, and press on his legs and chest causing him to not move or breath very well. Then it just disappears. This can be explained because 75% of your sleep is nREM ( non-rapid eye movement / where dreams do NOT occur ) and 25% REM ( rapid eye movement / where dreams occur ). While in REM sleep, your lungs and muscles start to stiffen. If you wake up during this, you still dream (causing hallucinations), but you can’t move or breathe very well for a few seconds up to a few minutes. This is called sleep paralysis. Then it just disappears. But that’s just a theory. A theory on a theory. Thanks for reading. (This theory could also explain a lot of this whole game) Edit: Holy Cow. Thanks for the likes guys!
Yeah, this happened to me once. It was extremely terrifying and honestly happened after I fucked up my sleep schedule and stayed up too long, along with misplaced clothing and lighting conditions. I still remember the image I saw and it's scarier than any horror game.
Chito Ruvalcaba I remember having my right hand being possessed by the sleep paralysis demon. It was easily cured via ‘punching’ the wall. Didn’t even hurt!
It's been a year since this was first uploaded and I literally jumped up from my chair the MOMENT you mentioned "Bangungut". Bangungut is a tagalog word meaning "Nightmare". As a Filipino myself, Bangunguts or Nightmares actually give me the frights. Bangunguts are no joke. They seem so real, and the moment you have one, you can never fall asleep the same the entire night. 😬
Not gonna lie. Seeing several of those symptoms of insomnia in real time to a friend was nothing short of phenomenally unsettling. Getting one such person to rest can be a sisyphean task.
I always had them back when I had to go to highschool (Quarantine is still on.) But I never saw monsters because opening your eyes is the only thing you DON'T wanna do. Focusing on breathing, if you feel like you can't dont panic because if you do it becomes harder. Try and move your tongue out of your mouth or moving your toe's or fingers.
@@regentlouis3678 I used to get these when I'm stressed before I go to sleep. It's like that feeling where you are half awake and you can feel your entire surroundings but your body feels so numb. You try to move but you can't and it almost feels like something is pushing down on you or preventing you to breath. When this happens I just try to focus on moving my toes or fingers and after that, I jolt awake from the nightmare. My friend also get these even till now and they call it paralysis demon.
@@uglyfugly7529 it’s some fabled story about this experiment in Russia where they use gas to keep three inmates awake for as long as possible and study the effects (which were very gruesome and brutal)
All well and good if that's a demon of your subconscious; but there are stranger things out there in the dreamscapes, and take my word that your lucidity has no power over them.
That story about the dark figure is an exact description of how sleep paralysis feels. I had sleep paralysis for a long time, I eventually realized my mattress was too soft and I was sinking in and my head was being pushed onto my throat while I slept. I would become conscious while my body was turned off by my brain, aware that I couldn’t breathe and in a total panic. These were much worse in high stress periods. I figure there’s was likely a similar case but the other people’s hearts weren’t strong enough to survive it

4:10 I've heard this story countless times, being hmong myself. I've always thought about how boring it was, never seeing how serious it actually sounded. How you worded it just made me well I dont know how to put it, but yeah.
I was incredibly shocked that he visualized that shadowy being exactly how i was experiencing for around 15 years until 2 years ago (27 y/o now). Even the fact that that thing puts you down, covers your face and then you wake up and you've slept... Man that is haunting. It was the first time i had this visualized without sleeping. Still having shivers. Not because i think it's ghostly but because even SO subtle neurological anomalies can be that similar
It isn't true though. I've died in my dreams before, and in one dream I was melted and killed and brought back like 100 years later to fight a war. Through some cloning or regeneration of my melted goo corpse or something like that. Another time I died in a plane crash in China for some reason, but my dream went to something else almost as if I never died at all.

Let’s see if we can get Matpat to see this)
Person Man NOPE PERFICTION
Good theory. But we know from watching House that doctors know all about rare conditions

That's Marine Corps training. We had it easier in the Army. We only went for three days.
I read somewhere that the reason that they do that is because sleep deprivation is a common torture method, so they train you to endure it so you don't crack and spill vital info.
Listened this while attempting to fall asleep. Thank you MatPat.

It's possible that John actually has PTSD from the thought of having a life-ending jolt of terror, like aneurysm, or less likely, a heart attack, so the jumpscare itself is what kills him
Y'know, It's always just a theory at the end of the comment.
Blitztein beta ah ok thank you 😊
That actually happened to me. I was like 14 and I had a dream where it felt like someone was pushing down on my chest and I remember grabbing it in my dream and waking up holding what I thought was a hand but there are nothing.
Mat Pat: he’s already inside…
Me: I like that rhyme! 😄
No problem for me as I'm an active lucid dreamer.
me 2 high five
I don't get how you can just decide you want to dream something. I always have completely random dreams.
Only a small part of your dreams are lucid.
I’m not sure if I am a lucid dreamer, but if I do dream, I can control myself.
The 2nd one ISN'T the story told by Wes Craven!
(This theory could also explain a lot of this whole game)
Edit: Holy Cow. Thanks for the likes guys!
ok dr phil
I mean that could be an explanation

That story about the dark figure is an exact description of how sleep paralysis feels. I had sleep paralysis for a long time, I eventually realized my mattress was too soft and I was sinking in and my head was being pushed onto my throat while I slept. I would become conscious while my body was turned off by my brain, aware that I couldn’t breathe and in a total panic. These were much worse in high stress periods. I figure there’s was likely a similar case but the other people’s hearts weren’t strong enough to survive it
