  • This is a look at what pushes the Liberty Bell. Yes, those are real steam powered engines. The boiler uses #2 deisel fuel to convert water into steam which is then used to push the two large pistons that rotate the paddle wheel at the stern of the boat and yes, it does use a guide track which is underwater. Remember, Walter Disney wanted everything to be as real as possible. That goes for the movies, TV shows, AND his theme parks.

    Thank you, from a long-time fan of steam power, wonderful film, makes me recall cruising aboard the S.S. Liberty Belle in 1992 & telling my Father & Grandfather that she felt cable-towed to me, a little front-endish for a rear paddler. One must admire the authenticity of such an operation. Long live steam power & long live The S.S. Liberty Belle. Can't wait to cruise her again.

    Yes the steam engines do move the Belle through the water, I do believe that she is on a guide track. I asked the crew this on my last visit and was told she is on a track. There is an article on Miceage about the Columbia at Disneyland, halfway done one of the pages it talks about the track.

    Ya there was a whole story behind using the track system. One that comes to mind was the effective navigation of the craft through the narrow river and the track allows craft to come right up to the dock without bumping it.

    Glad you like the video. Not many people believe me when I tell them that the Pilot in the Wheel House is actually steering the boat which is really being pushed by a boiler and steam engine that actually turns the Paddle wheel in the back. I can now show them this video and explain to them how Walt Disney himself wanted it to be as real as possible at the parks and on the TV and in the movies.

    No problem, There is a guide track underwater but it still is pushed by the rear paddle wheel.

    Wow, I always thought the Pilot in the Wheel House was actually steering the boat. But it would make sense to have it on a guide track though.

    The boat runs on Diesel 2. It is on a Ibeam guiding track. It takes about 45 mins to an hour to start it up every morning because we high pressure the boiler to close it to make sure we have enough heat in the boiler to help the start up time in the morning. If we let it cool down it would take half the day to restart it. also we communicate usingn a beep from the wheel house to steam. 1 long beep to stop, 2 to start, 3 to go slow and 4 to put the johnson bar in nutrual.

    @Kris082011 Thanks for the info. What really gets me is how people think it's fake just because it's in a theme park. I actually told some people those are fully functioning steam engines and the paddlewheel at the stern actually pushes the boat.

    Does anyone know where the machinery for this boat came from? The engines appear to be genuine Western Rivers style sternwheeler engines.

    How long does the fire up take?

    @guitboxchicken Yeah there's a telegraph for the engineer. The engineers view is obstructed by what I believe to be the Boiler Room in the middl of the boat.

    Thanks for the update. How bout that, she runs on the same stuff I put in my Pete 387. Though it probably isn't the USLD formula.

    I think the boiler uses propane but I'm not shure.

    @andrewbnsf I honestly don't know, sorry.

    @RUSSSELLLLL There's nothing fake about those steam engines. That engineer isn't down there pulling and pushing levers and oppening and closing valves just for show.

    1 minute of engine out of 5 minutes of film. :(
