Super interesting series! Sometimes is difficult to grasp what makes a good writing “good”, but with these “bad examples” I have being able to improve my own writing and critical skills

I love these videos! I realize I have started paying even more attention to the 1st sentence when I start reading a book now.

What would you do different for the Grisham opening? You should Write up your version of a better Grisham opening and can compare it. Would be a good writing exercise.

Truly enjoy this analytical way of looking at fiction. Thank you!

I love John Grisham novels. But have to say I was let down by his novel “The Broker”. It started out really good and drew me right in. But once it moves into act 2 it gets so boring and redundant. The novel goes on for like 45 pages about the main character walking to and from their Italian lessons. I kinda always wondered how it ended. I gave up on it midway through.

The first sentence your read sounded like a stripped-down Pat Conroy attempt. Somehow Conroy manages to evoke with each word.

Every writer should record and read out their zero drafts and try different sentence structures in later drafts to avoid bad writing. It's too easy to write bad without doing that. We have to listen for the mistakes.

Sorry Josh, John Grisham gets a pass😅!!! One of the best to ever do it (write books), that is. Attorney, prolific writer, novels made into movies, writer of children's mystery books!! Civil Rights advocate. John Grisham, an awesome human-- you picked the wrong person!😮
