Sleeping in tents every night for 7 nights near the locations at elevations in excess of 13,000 feet Mike and his crew set out on an audacious project to light and photograph the most well-known ghost towns in Colorado. The project was a culmination of 15 years of photographic study dovetailed with the then just accessible high-end digital capture systems. Prior to 2006 Mike had been working with a 4×5 technical camera and was transitioning from 4×5 crome one-shot images to multi-layered shots done on NPS negative film. The transition period let me jump right into multi-layered digital shots before anyone really had even conceived of the idea. This multi-layering along with digital capture kept the equipment requirements low enough that he was able to just do the project.

This is a cool project with great results. I really like that you captured some of the old structures before they fell. (I'd love to see you shoot the mill on Mosquito Pass or Halfmoon Gulch... or Crossons Ghost town for that matter) Have you ever considered coming back to Colorado in fall or winter? I'd bet that your lighting techniques would look amazing coming through the yellow aspen or contrasting warm lighting against cold blue of a snowy night. If you're ever back in town, look up Rocky Mountain 4x4. We'd be happy to help you transport your equipment to remote sites and get you into places you couldn't get to with a stock 4x4. (Holy Cross city for example) Thanks, again, for doing your part in documenting these neat pieces of Colorado history.

I love your lighting!! Big time!! But the scrapping of the river and painting over it is bad! Has to be natural!!

I presume you are talking about the Crystal Mill shot? The exposure was somewhat in the range of 20 - 30 seconds so the water, with its huge flow begins to feel surreal, as if I did paint over it, but I can assure you the image was not painted over.

Totally understandable, on first glance it does look surreal. Thanks for taking interest and for your comments!
