I remember riding this train with my uncle in 1962 - and then again with my children in 1996. Both were thrilling rides and as this video so vividly shows - had just absolutely stunning scenery at every turn of the wheel.
I remember riding this train back in the 1970's. My grandpa Goff lived their in Silverton back then. He payed for my sisters and I to ride from Durango to Silverton. I really miss my Grandpa and visiting Silverton every Summer as a kid. Oh the memories, thank you.
I took that train ride years ago. The video captures a lot but I think that the awe inspiring beauty needs to be experienced first hand. My father and mother's families are from near there. Thanks for bringing this "old fashioned" beauty to the world!
My first time was in 1955....I still go back and ride it...I was 5 yrs old then...those were the days..but it still takes me back to those days of yesterday year....phil...wichita, ks...
What a GREAT ride. I was there 2 years ago with a friend from NM. Loved every moment, bump, and jiggle of it!!! I hope it's still there when I get the chance to do it again.
christelle kotzenberg Funny you mention, because Louis La'More lived on a ranch about 15 miles west of Durango right off HWY 160. She's likely passed on by now, but his wife stayed and lived there long after his death. I grew up there, and even did some work for her on the ranch, but that's been over 20 years ago.
I've ridden this several times. The first time was in the late 1960s when they still had tram and bus seats in some of the cars, and some cars still had potbelly stoves for heat. I was in about 1st or 2nd grade, and my folks made sure that i was wearing an elastic strap to hold my glasses on, since the frames were still of that glass-like substance that was heavy and kept trying to slide off of my face. Loved Silverton and the ride. Nice vid!!
This was one of the most fun trips my wife and I ever made. I didn't realize that the locomotive and coaches were full size, just the wheels were closer together.
This makes me miss Durango. When I lived there I never once rode the train but I have ridden it since.. It is a really cool ride and the D&S used to mine their own coal to run the train on. I don't know if they do anymore.
Crossed the line around the changes of the summer Reaching out to call the color of the sky Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see Getting over all the time I had to worry Leaving all the changes far from far behind We relieve the tension only to find out the master's name Down at the end, round by the corner Close to the edge, just by a river Seasons will pass you by I get up, I get down
This is the perfect ride to cure and dispell all those individuals with phobias of great heights. Just imagine going around those tight curves, 250 ft. shear drop down below and a derailment happens...
I rode this train in 2016, very nice ride. I suggest not taking the open air car, there is much smoke, soot and embers. Luckily I took an enclosed car.
I am thinking of doing this train ride but others have mentioned that you end up covered in soot by the time you are finished. Did you find this to be the case? From your comment sounds like you have done the ride more than once.
Damn, I was planning on seeing that area this summer when I was in Cotez, but they closed San Juan National Forest and the highway to Silverton so I never made it.
Teddy Roberts Make sure you try again! I have rode this train many times, and will be out there again this coming spring.....Can't wait !! It's a fantastic experience!!
I can recommend both of them - and several others. There are a lot of fine scenic heritage train trips in the West. I only have to watch Jack Elam's final scenes in the movie "Support Your Local Gunfighter" to be back aboard this train.
people looking for profit think that diesel trains are a better option, what their never going to understand, is that, the only thing keeping their railway going, is the nostalgia for steam, you can see it hear it and smell it, lose the steam and your railway will fade away, ime an old coot now, but i still remember when i was a kid, traveling by steam, with pullman coaches, its a memory that sits just under the surface, then they upgraded and ruined, the whole damn thing, people didnt travel for pleasure anymore, it was all everyday work related, and miles and miles of track were lost, which now they wish they hadnt sold, because they now want to rebuild the line, when all a person can see is profit, they make bad judgment calls
SURE HOPE THEY NEVER HAVE AN.....EARTH QUAKE...SOOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE! YOWZERS! WHO WOULD THINK..BUT SURE IS BEAUTIFUL! A LITTLE TO HIGH FOR ME.....BUT IT IS LOVELY ..ANYWAY...
Not too hot in summer. During winter, mountains do get covered i snow. Only difference that during winter train does not go all the way to Silverton. It stops halfway and then returns to Durango. I've done both rides, and both rides are beautiful, but I like to ride it during summer better because the ride is longer and you're not freezing if you decide to step out in one of those gondola-like wagons.
@@mrhoya14 Hey, here is a link to the train website where you can look up more info www.durangotrain.com/ as for your questions: drive to silverton is only about 50 minutes or 1 hour max. The train, however, has the options to either bring passengers back no extra charge, or to take a bus. The trip on the train to Silverton is about 3.5 hours, so going back and forth would a LONG time. As for the price, they have different packages. Check their website to see the one you prefer.
If you do this don’t wear white. And pick a car as far back away from the locomotive as possible. The engine sprays senders the whole time It’s still a fantastic ride. I’ve done it twice.
Just looked it up. It was supposed to go to the Colorado Railroad Museum but that didn't happen. I think it's in the Durango roundhouse being restored.
Durango thrilling train ride experience, thanks for sharing beautiful video congratulations 🙏very natural scenery and excellent photography 👌👌👌
Hats off to the crew that maintains that line, simply stunning
I remember riding this train with my uncle in 1962 - and then again with my children in 1996. Both were thrilling rides and as this video so vividly shows - had just absolutely stunning scenery at every turn of the wheel.
Great video Fred, Thanks for making it

Daniel Davis, Sr. Yes Sir! Such awesome scenery ! Would Love experience this firsthand
i live here, and like most people here i believe the scenery is the only good thing about durango
@@jacobashworth1225 I was there in the 80s and it was a GREAT place to live, I can imagine now, the drive up 550 to Hermosa is kinda depressing...
Thank you. Heading that way this summer just to visit and spend. I do like that.
I LOVE living in Silverton. The People that come to visit are always treated with a wonderful Surprise. Friends always welcome.
Tony Vowels . I wish I could afford to live there. It's so beautiful.
My first time was in 1955....I still go back and ride it...I was 5 yrs old then...those were the days..but it still takes me back to those days of yesterday year....phil...wichita, ks...
Very cool! I can almost smell the fresh air and pine trees.
What a GREAT ride. I was there 2 years ago with a friend from NM. Loved every moment, bump, and jiggle of it!!! I hope it's still there when I get the chance to do it again.
I am a South African and loved this "train ride" experience. Beautiful scenery and the towns of Louis LaMoore novels.
Terribly, and why the train in fact all people on the right side))) does not overturn ...

Great video. I admire all the workers who made that railroad.
As a now implanted Coloradan, I look forward to taking this train ride🚇😊
Thanks for sharing. My son and I enjoyed it and hope to be there in about seven weeks! We can't wait!!

I took this ride in 2013 and took a pic of locomotive 493 and its Denver & Rio Grande coal tender right where you show it at 9:15.
Lovely! Enjoyed watching it.
We had a great time riding this train. I love videoing trains. Especially, coal fired engines.
I love the 4 wheel drive Checker cab at the end of the movie!
Excellent clip.

I'm so excited as I am going on this same trip later in September! I have never rode a train! I'm quite nervous because I'm so afraid of Hights!
Worth every penny awesome experience
My adopted dad Steve Davison and I rode this train from Duragno to Silverton 28 years ago the last weekend of October 1992
We rode on this train twice. Loved the smell of coal!

Amazing
Spectacular views,but very crazy.
Love this ride we tru and do it every year. Kinda easy to do when we live close by another good train ride is the Chama Toltec railroad.

@@Lisa-Tahiti we didn't have any issues with soot. As long as you don't get in the car directly behind the engine.
Those sheer drop offs are like the million dollar highway between Silverton and Montrose....no thanks!!!
Im watching this video bcos of Seef Kuss.he lives in Durango.now i know why he is a great mountain climber

I might have to take this ride to get me over the fear of heights after going off the cliff on shyway on the grand Mesa
Don’t think I have ever seen a 4WD Checker cab.
I saw a 1952 Kiser made into a 4WD tow truck in Burns Wy.
Might need to do this, will bne the closest thing I'll come to RDR2! :p

@ the 6:24 mark, note the reflection of the coach windows on the opposite cliff.
Oh my god,it's really funny and frustaing
Definitely worth taking. Take the caboose club car. Silverton; Ouray area my favor area of Colorado.

Me encanta es tren los paisajes los abetos son maravillozos que deben ser lindas la navidades
Diesel trains are good. But nothing compared to a "living" steam train. .
If I want diesel, I'll take Amtrak.
Why are you saying this? Isn't this a true steam train??
oh hell naw!!! anxiety the whole time.... would love to ride that route but shit....
8:22 I want to camp right there but I'm in a wheelchair now so it won't happen 😩

50 Most Important Airports in the World
SURE HOPE THEY NEVER HAVE AN.....EARTH QUAKE...SOOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE! YOWZERS! WHO WOULD THINK..BUT SURE IS BEAUTIFUL! A LITTLE TO HIGH FOR ME.....BUT IT IS LOVELY ..ANYWAY...
We don’t get earthquakes here the worst possible is a rock falling and they keep it well maintained any dangerous conditions they shut it down.
Unfortunately we can only travel in summer or winter. Is it too warm in summer? Is it blanketed in snow in winter? It is in my bucket list!
