I heard Styx for the first time, and this song, at a laser light show, in a planetarium. They turned the lights completely off so you are in darkness, then they projected related pictures on the ceiling. For one song, you're looking up and see these clouds, and suddenly it started raining... inside! (not for this song, I can't remember which one)
Absolutely love Styx. They're my favorite rock band of all time. I remember listening to them on Casey Kasem top 40 in elementary school. We lived at Sheppard Air Force Base Texas. Awesome memories! Thanks for this one mrm
@@hurricane7479 that was a great observation. LOL what a small world the military is. Yes I was in Sheppard Air Force Base Texas in 79 as well. I was only 10 then. That was so funny
I was a kid when this came out. Naturally any song named "Renegade" will automatically attract the attention of a 12 year old me. And then add in the hangman, gallows and wanted man with killer keyboards, guitars and drums and unique vocals (American QUEEN?) and I was sold. I got to see the original lineup on their last tour, when Pat Benatar opened up for them. Great show! You should try "Blue Collar Man", "Grand Illusion", "Foolin Yourself" or "Too Much Time on my Hands", all solid radio hits.
You are ROCKIN! Styx frontman, Tommy Shaw, hometown boy that struck gold. Watched him for years playing the local circuit. Very, very talented artist. We used to watch him play around town. “Harmony” was a constant at the bowling alley. Good times. Thank you, Modern Renaissance Man. With love, from Pam & LoLa❤️🐾❤️
@Tyler Buckley Was familiar with them as the Trade Winds (or TW4) when they'd play the Milwaukee bar scene. Dennis Deyoung, James Young, John and Chuck Panozza, and John Curlewski.
Styx is awesome. Its two lead singers were Dennis DeYoung ("Come Sail Away," "Lady" and "Show Me the Way" are three of my favorites he sang) and Tommy Shaw (who sang "Renegade," "Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)" and "Too Much Time on My Hands"). Brings back great memories of my teen years.
I didn't realize you reacted to this song over a year ago. This is my second-favorite Styx song. What a great band. I was either at the end of junior high or starting high school when this song came out and I loved it. What's funny is Jeep had a vehicle out at that time called the Renegade and I really, really wanted one. Couldn't afford a vehicle at that time though. Now, I always associate this song with that vehicle, and not just outlaws.
An old favorite. It was Easter 1979 in Upstate NY that I first heard this song. When we were kids we used to get one or two gifts for Easter, and my sister got The Grand Illusion and Pieces Of Eight albums and we listened to them constantly. I was 14. In the springtime we always cleaned out the garage thoroughly, put down cheap carpeting, huge screen windows at the garage door so we could open it up in the summer, and we'd always have a stereo and turntable set up. I just remember being out there cranking up those Styx lps. God, I miss those carefree days.
First album I ever bought. 1980. Styx has been my favorite band since. I have introduced my kids to Styx at a young age. Now age 31and 25, I took them to Styx concerts pretty much every year growing up. We LOVE THEM!
I know you love it when you scratch that head! Styx is awesome. They have so many amazing tunes out there. This entire album rocks. 🤘🏻🤘🏻💙 they’ve been jamming since the 70’s. 💋
His daughter is becoming a well known animal rights activist and has a bunch of videos on YT as "The Kitten Lady" teaching about feral cats, TNR and how to foster orphaned kittens. She is the spitting image of her dad.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! What a wonderful song and a great reaction! Just going into high school when this came out. Arena rock! I don't think there was anyone who heard it who didn't love it.
I was in 8th grade I think when this song came out... I was just starting to enjoy all kinds of music and this group Styx, continued to be on the music track of my life...
Styx has always been such a rocking band! James young is an absolute walking badass on two legs - listen to that guitar sing and roar! He's been one of my favorite guitarists for 40+ years!
I was 11 years old in the spring of 1979. My parents were on vacation and my 2 siblings and I had our awesome next door neighbor babysitting us. As soon as I starting hearing this song on the radio (WLS AM 890 Chicago) I ran out to the Flipside (record store) and bought the 45. Played it and played it and played it. Redrew the cover art because that's what you do. And played it and played it and played it. Awesome. Words and phrases this 11 year old didn't even know the meaning of: "Long Arm of the Law"; "Gallows"; "Renegade"; "Retrieved"; "Bounty"; "Jig is Up"
Queen of Spades. Best Styx song ever. I'm not a big fan of Lawrence Gowan (replacement for Dennis DeYoung) but there is a youtube video of a his cover of this song and it's amazing.
Queen of Spades was the first song I heard from Styx as a kid (first rock song period). I was only 11 years old and I said: Where has this been all my life? Became a rocker after that.
I was out of college when I first heard this song, and in all reality, you're just having fun and working and all of that. When you get to hear this song with all the other great rock bands back then, it was pure heaven. Got to see them decades later, but still sounded the same!
I know what you mean about tempo breaks, and changes in songs, I love them as well. The Styx song "A.D. 1928/Rockin the Paradise" is a excellent example. I am a big fan of the use of synthesized keyboards in songs, that is what brought me to Styx, plus the fantastic singing and harmonies.
Finally, finally, finally you listened one (of many) outstanding STYX songs! My first concert was in 1980/81. They played twice at our Country Club (on the tennis court) and just rocked it! Tommy Shaw and fellow guitarist were on the back of a golf cart and waved to me (no one else there in the small parking lot). They continue to tour and is worth the price of admission. On a side note, the former lead singer, Dennis DeYoung is finally performing again. What a set of pipes!
Wow!! Styx my favorite band of all time!! I was 12 when I first heard this song. My sister was having a high school graduation party in the basement. I went down the stairs to just behind the door to listen to the music she was playing on the stereo. Wow I was hooked. And still to this day my favorite song from my favorite band, and favorite lead vocalist Tommy Shaw.
Styx is a super awesome Band!! Love them...I saw them in Concert in the mid 1980's!! Partied with JY...James Young and his awesome band...he' s the lead guitarist and back up vocals in Styx....in Jacksonville Florida....where I live...in early 2000's!! They soon after, all got back together and did a tour...as Styx! They rock for sure!!✌☮🌞🌴🦋🎶🎵🎼
Steeler Fan here. This is what gets played during the timeout between the third and fourth quarters at Heinz Field. When the game comes back from commercial and the crowd's roaring - this is why. Great song!
I first heard Renegade on the radio one Saturday night during a “camp out” in my backyard with some friends. It was 1979. I was 13. I lost my mind. I began my hard rock/metal journey that night. That same week I heard “Carry On Wayward Son.” Game over.
I was 10 when this song came out. I remember growing up in Connecticut I used to walk just about everywhere in my town. Whenever I wanted to go somewhere, I either hopped on my bike or walked. I remember, I was going into this convenience store in my town that had THE best variety of ice cream cones in their freezer. So, I went there one afternoon and this song was playing on the radio the clerk had near the cash register. I loved it and still do! What a song. What an album!!
Styx was the soundtrack to my high school years! Lol - I have a special song that I think of for each of my three boys and Styx's "Fooling Yourself" is for my 22-year-old, he has a hard time believing in himself and I have to remind him a lot
This was a song I heard a lot when I was back in college 94-96, even though it has already been released, my college roommate played this group like a lot, along with others. Now I have heard Dennis Deyoung before *DESERT MOON* that was my intro to him, but I was already drummer having survived high school band, hearing this song gave me an appreciation for how really good drumming can control mood, tempo and atmosphere of a song.
I was in high school when Renegade came out. I love every song on the Pieces of Eight album, especially "Queen of Spades" . We lost Chuck Panozzo, the drummer in 1996.
@Tyler Buckley Thanks for the correction. And that's a great story you told. I had a chance to see Styx, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon in Salisbury, MD in 2000, but I just started my new job and was afraid to ask for the day off to go see them.
I don't remember the very first time I heard it because it was 40 years ago. But I do remember it got a lot of air play on rock radio. I also remember my classmate in 7th grade telling me he liked the song right after it came out and ended up having to write an essay about why I shouldn't talk in class. That memory will always be tied to that song. It was also played during the 'all boy's skate' at my local roller skating rink. I am grateful to have lived during this era of music.
My daughter could, pretty much, sing every song on "The Greatest Hits" CD when she was, like, 5. She's 22 now and has a learned taste in music. She also fell in love with Queen at a very young age. Gotta raise em right! Lol

It was the summer between 6th and 7th grade. I was at my best friend's house for the third night in a row. South Park came on, Cartman sang the entire song several times, my friend and I looked it up, and over a decade later it's still one of our favorites

Oooooh Yeah! Saw STYX back in the 70’s live! Loved all their early albums. Crystal Ball, Pieces of Eight. 8 Track tape in the Maverick, riding to softball games.
A very good friend of mine in Vegas was Promotions Manager for STYX in the day. He traveled with them all over the world. The stories I've heard....LOL.
I'm surprised I didnt see Mr Roboto by Styx. My very first concert was Styx with Kansas, they played about 4/5 of there most popular songs. It was funny cause these ladies with large breast were throwing there bras to the lead singer he was like yuck! 😝 threw them to other band member lol
This band is iconic...I grew up listening to this band and love them....dig those harmoies...get into that groove....drums are awesome....killer synth....awesome lead guitar....this for Ty was a 2 head scratcher.....this band had it all
The River Styx is a principal river in the Greek underworld (also called Hades). The river forms a border between the underworld and the world of the living. The word means hate in Greek and is named after the goddess, Styx. She was the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys.
Been a while since I heard this one. You got the tingles with this one, knew you would with the harmony, Ty. Saw them live for their Grand Illusion Tour, what a show they put on. Every time I hear this one, I look around for Dean & Sam Winchester, this was used in one of my favorite episodes of Supernatural. Thanks for doing this one, Ty.
I can't believe you did this song! My best friend all thru high school was TOTALLY in love with the lead guitar player! Sorry can't remember his name. I was more of a Huey Lewis & The News fan but, STYX man, she was always cranking that in her car. Even after high school 😊
Styx was my band in the 70s...I had the biggest crush on Tommy Shaw but now that I'm older my favorite song is CASTLE WALLS off of The Grand Illusion Album.
These reaction videos are new to me, and I find them very interesting. Seeing someone's reaction to a song I've heard and enjoyed probably a hundred times is quite fun. Well done. If this old man might suggest two one hit wonder songs for your edification, try Mississippi Queen, by Mountain, and/or My Sharona, by The Knack.
Love ur reaction MRM! Crack me up! Ive always loved this song! /Styx. Saw them in concert a couple times.. they were amazing!!! Good one ty and thanks mr. Shan!! 💓

See them everytime they're around and friends with the drummer and keyboardist on fb. They're great. Need to check out the concert with our local kids cyo (cleveland youth orchestra) beautifully done with the band
I always loved how on their return to the intro theme they match the energy level they've achieved by bringing in the ultra high falsetto harmony. Masterful.
music made to be listened to loudly! ive seen them live 3 times including pieces of eight tour. first time was pittsburgh 1977 ...caught 5 guitar picks in casper wyo... oh yeah !!! rock and roll my friends.

So cool...you gotta react to Mr. Roboto, Come Sail Away, Lights, Angry Young Man, Snowblind, Babe, Show Me the Way, Haven’t We Been Here Before & Rockin the Paradise....so many more but I don’t wanna overwhelm you bro. 🤘🏼
Styx was classified as orchestrated rock. You want to be blown away listen to a Styx album from beginning to end because each song builds on each other to tells a story and leads you on a journey, and when you finish that journey your mind is blown away. Albums nowadays don't do that. The Styx album "Grand Illusion" does exactly that. I also suggest "Fooling Yourself" or "Grand Illusion" as songs you would trip out on.
My favorite Styx song... Made to be played LOUD on the car radio!
There are not volume levels high enough for this song! (Heaven knows I've tried.)

Styx sing for the day is good.
I watched STYX in concert they put on one HELL of a show
this song has a very long history going back to me in college in North Carolina in the late 70..early 80's at the Mountain Turf Bar. Mind blown!!!
Oooooh Yeah! Saw STYX back in the 70’s live! Loved all their early albums. Crystal Ball, Pieces of Eight. 8 Track tape in the Maverick, riding to softball games.
Tommy Shaw's voice gets even better with age.
So when I was in high school we did a field show to all Styx music. Our opener was Mr. Roboto
A very good friend of mine in Vegas was Promotions Manager for STYX in the day. He traveled with them all over the world. The stories I've heard....LOL.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your reaction to this song! One of my favorite songs of all time!
Allison McCullough Some Housewives of Orange County did the same a few years back when they played at our Country Club.
Totally gross. I don't understand why women do that stupid mess. It's so trashy...
Love this song.... Also Styx song Lady... If the memories of Junior high and high school
The bands name is from Greek mythology. The river Styx was the border between Earth and the Underworld.
That '70s badass harmony just highkey kicks that fission into gear, don't it? I love this song. Just rediscovered it myself a couple weeks back.
REO Speedwagon ...Ride the storm out
Try "Linger" by The Cranberries.
Shan!! 💓
Styx will always be my favorite band! Every album (up to killroy) were gold!! Every song was great, no skipping forward to hear the next song! I've requested my kids play come sail away for my final departure ! I saw Styx a few yrs ago and Tommy Shaw is timeless!! Please do more STYX!!!
Takes me back to my younger days! Great song and is one of my favs by STYX. You pronounced it correctly btw!
See them everytime they're around and friends with the drummer and keyboardist on fb. They're great. Need to check out the concert with our local kids cyo (cleveland youth orchestra) beautifully done with the band
I could watch that concert everyday , those kids are AMAZING. Tommy can do anything. Love Lawrence (was never a huge fan of Dennis's ego )
@@juliegarraghty4280 same here. Dennis held the band back because of that ego. Wrote beautiful songs - but held them back.
I always loved how on their return to the intro theme they match the energy level they've achieved by bringing in the ultra high falsetto harmony. Masterful.
One of my fave Styx songs. Thank you for sharing this one. I really enjoy your reactions.
Absolutely 2 Styx songs you MUST react to. "Suite Madame Blue" "Come Sail Away"... aw hell.... a n d "Pieces of Eight" !!!
Remeber these groups back then ,wrote it produced it,,played it,, this was talent .. Rock or soul keep it up
My favorite song by the band. Rocking out hard. They had a few hit albums back in my high schools days.
Loved this, didn’t want it to end. 💕
Crystal Ball is a good Styx song.

Knew you would appreciate this! I still have one of the first copies of the pieces of eight album on vinyl. This, come sail away, and Babe are probably my fav Styx Songs. good Stuff!!
My fave Styx song too. My cousin Butch got me into them. My immediate family was visiting my uncle in Canada. Good times. 👍
Finally an ORIGINAL SONG!!! Styx ROCKED!!!!
Been a while since I had a STYX fix. I knew MRM was in for a treat when he was impressed to a head scratch on the tight harmonies from the get go. Lol
Styx is one of my fav bands. Right from their Wooden Nickle days. Never had a bad LP.
Brings me back to my young days ...loved Styx
Badass Styx reaction. Love the group. Kilroy was Here was the first album I bought with my own money. 🤘🏼
Great pick! Another band you might like is “Supertramp” - Breakfast In America or Take The Long Way Home.
The Logical Song and Give a little bit.
Love Styx. Listened to all the time growing up!
Love it!!!! Reminds laying in my bedroom with my headphones on as a teenager. You need to listen to more Styx!!!
Probably one of the best Styx songs of all. Come Sail Away is a close second IMO, but a totally different style of song.
