    Very wise sir. I love the title of this video. Reminds us we have an obligation to the animal to have our act together, else we shouldn’t be hunting them. Thanks for sharing.

    Hey Jeff. Only just discovered your work on our behalf a couple days ago. Im a 65 year old backyard archer. I have hunted but not as an archer. May not either, but you have already educated me so much regarding gear, setup, FORM, and all the aiming systems that I have dabbled with and am trying to integrate into a personal system.
    Most importantly, your warm and humble and earnest way of teaching is beneficial to the human spirit of others. And hey, we’re humans. Stewardship of one’s ability to help people is the main thing; archery is icing on the cake.

    I like my black eagle outlaw arrows. I could shoot my 500 spine outlaw arrows 480 grains or I tried full length 350 spine total arrow weight of 540 grains out of my 44 to 46 pound bows. I stuck with the 500 spine for the weight, trajectory and speed of these arrows . Point on 25 and 30 yrds. Penitration no real difference and I still pass through deer!! I do shoot 200 grain up front. My heavier bows 220 to 250 up front with my 350 spine arrows. I do like the combination of speed and weight that's why I like about 10 grains per pound of bow weight. You can pass through deer with lighter setups. You don't need a 650 grain arrow out of a 45 pound bow to get the job done.

    I started Trad in January (switching from compound) and I’ve been busting my butt to get everything working. Once I finally learned arrow tuning the game changed. I have a 45# Bear Grizzly and a 50# BH longbow. that I’ve been working with. I have the Grizzly (41-42 # @ 26.5”) dialed in with Traditional Only Barebow 600 spine, 28” long, 4” shield cut fletching, 125 gr ethics outerts (I think) and 175 gr point and all arrows nock tuned… total weight 542 gr w/ 25% FOC flying like darts. I just got my 175 Grizzlystick broadheads and they’re shooting identical.
    The BH likes the same arrows in 500 spine with the same outsert and point weight, but I’ve noticed I have to be more perfect with it. So, the Grizzly it is this year with 3 months to get perfection.

    Jeff, I have a bow ordered from Big Jim. In my mind, like I saw in one of your videos, a stiffer shaft can tune perfect with enough point weight and the shaft longer. He is telling me NO. I am ordering a 45# longbow and I have two dozen fletched 5575 gold tip traditionals. I am thinking with close to 300 grains up from I should not have to buy new arrows. Along with the two dozen fletched, I have one or two dozen of the same bare shafts and some of the same 5575 pro hunters. So I need someone else to tel me they will be done before I go and have to sell all of these. The fletched ones are all full length and have not need trimmed yet. I thought if I could get one of those... I forgot the name but the stainless insert and the outsert that fit a gold tip to start with, then find the point I want and I always trim from the nick end until I find the length that flies right. Give me some input. Just from you Jeff. Thanks. Great videos. I’ve been an instinctive shooter lost all my life. I shoot like Howard Hill. Meaning I don’t even hold to my anchor. Once my fingertip hits the corner of my mouth, that arrow is gone. That’s me. We all shoot different. Anyway, please ease my mind on my arrows, and since I have a year wait for the bow, I have time to sell these of need be, but if I can, I want a heavier arrow.

    Hello mr. Phillips!
    I have been a traditional shooter since 2016 and have always wanted to hunt with a trad bow and I am finally getting ready this year for fall turkey and whitetail in the great state of KY. I need some help getting the right arrow weight for a good hard hitting and not to heavy arrow. I am shooting a mandarin duck black hunter at 58# at 29 inch which is my draw length. I’m looking at the Easton legacy arrows. 9.3 GPI with the 400 spine but I’m not sure if I need a 400 or something stiffer with my poundage. I love your videos and would love some feed back

      Yes sir 400’s should be fine with no more than 200 grains up front, I would think that a 340 at like 31” with around 250 up front would work great also, it really depends on exactly how the riser is cut, some black hunters are cut way past center which will shoot a much stiffer arrow and some are barely cut to center which would make the 400’s a better choice, load an arrow and look at from behind with the string centered on the bow and see if the arrow is pointing slightly left or completely straight, if it’s left at all you’ll be good with 400’s most likely 👍🏻

    am I crazy? I run a 587 grain arrow set up out of a 40lb bow @ 28". I draw just slightly over 28" so maybe 41-42lb's. 300 point weight. Point on distance is at 20 yards.

    When bare shaft tuning for a hunting arrow, should you bare shaft tune with a field point? Or should you bare shaft tune with the broadhead you are going to use?

    • @terrydewayne
      @terrydewayne Рік тому

      To save my targets, i usually dont BUT, i do want a field tip thats the same length as the chosen broadhead, once im tuned i will usually shoot 1 once or twice bare with that broadhead at close range just to make sure theres nothin weird happening, then fletch up and flyem, dunno if having a short field tip and long broadhead hurts, i just try to keep it all as close aspossible, if you do shoot broadhead without fletch, be very careful, if kicking tail left or right , that joker can get squirrely, im curious of jeffs response to this question as well, he prob drop us a response, used same method with compound for decades... Never had a broadhead not fly right if i can shoot a bare shaft nice and straight out to at least 20 yards , and that was pushing 270-280 fps with fixed blade heads, only recurving few years myself, no issues so far, i shoot woodsman elites, vpa unvented 3 blades and some unvented valkrie 3 blades

    • @pickin4you
      @pickin4you Рік тому

      @@terrydewayne you will not find too many field points the same length as your broadhead. It’s all in the weight. Bars shaft tune with field points only. Then once fletched, test your broadhead. If you get the ones he has recommended, there is no worries. If a field point flies dead straight, so will all good broadheads.

      @@pickin4you strangley enough i do, i shoot 200 grain field tips that are bout 1/8 inch different than vpa 3 blade or woodsmans, yes weight is primary, but changing overall length of arrow is in my equation to... If not adding lengtg to the carbon, it shoukdnt affect it, but i like to keep as close as i can to exact overall length, ALONG with weight

    How about wood arrows?
    Wood arrows are very heavy, more than 1000 grains, could they work well with a 45 pounds bow? How to get high FOC for wood arrows? The wood shafts are so heavy.
    Thank you very much.

      I’m not a huge fan of wood arrows just because they’re sensitive to weather changes and just hard to keep straight but with that said they’re a must for the guys wanting to be really traditional and spend the time it takes to use them and yes they’re heavy also very expensive 👍🏻

      @@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I shoot a horsebow and make my own arrows, wood arrows are extremely cheap to make. I shoot a 50lb bow 11/32 arrows made of Cedar wood. My arrows are 462 grain with 100 grain weight field heads (Hunting is illegal in the Uk). You can make a good arrow for about £5 although buying broadhead arrowheads could be much more expensive than field tips, they aren't really sold in the UK. A well made wooden arrow that you varnish shouldn't have any issues with the weather (except the feathers) that I have ever noticed.
      Keep in mind that wood isn't all the same and some woods are better than others and some are prone to bend. Hickory and Ash are probably the best for higher poundage bows.

      @@Ashbringer85I shoot 23/64 cedar arrows and can make them pretty cheap as well. I have a lifelong supply of mercury speed nocks and 125 grain field points. My expense is normally just turkey fletchings, stain and lacquer along with shafts. I guess they are a little spendy for the shafts these days but my arrows don't break too often. They do when they get old and you hit a rock or something but I've noticed my woodies to be strong. I also buy my shafts at the highest spine you can get. One thing for sure is if you can shoot wood arrows decent. You will be a sniper with carbon arrows. I can put my woodies into a paper plate at 20 yards if I'm focused and doing everything right but I can put some carbons into an apple sized group at the same distance. I feel like woodies have more deviation so you have to aim lower sometimes. Where the carbons are just a laser beam lol
