Also now that I've had a chance to listen to this, glad you're seeing why people hated End Times so much. Just remember, as awful as this is, it's only a part of the broader context at the time for Warhammer players.

What's fucking astonishing is it's the most Warhammer thing ever for an Everchosen to stand on the cusp of destroying the Empire for good, only for a PROPER ARD GREEN BOI to run up, kick him in the balls and then lay into the Chaos horde BECAUSE DEY'Z DA BEST FOIGHTIN thus allowing the Empire to limp its way to survival and eventual rebuilding as it had done so many times before.
That happened totally organically... and they turned their face from it...

This isn't your average everyday kind of bad writing. This is "somehow, Palpatine returned"-bad writing.

      No, no
This is "somehow, Palpatine returned. Also Darth Maul returned, and killed Palpatine before the movie started. Also Palpatine returned a second time after that, but then Luke beat him again, and decided he shouldn't just kill him, but turn him over to the police, so now Palpatine is in jail on Kashyk, and Darth Maul died. How? I dunno, he just died. So now the movie can start."

Palpatine actually did survive the battle on the Death Star in the sadly now noncanonical comics, through the same cloning, but it actually made sense, because he was young looking and Luke Skywalker did eventually hunt him down kill him. Palpatine isn't someone to just take a nap for 50 years doing nothing , he would have still been in charge because if he wasn't his Empire would collapse, like it did in the Disney movies. Sith Lords staying alive through taking over bodies is something that has been a thing for a while, just used very poorly.

I'd actually say Star Wars Episode 9 is worse.
The End Times sucked, but if you were a fan of Grimgor, Settra, or Vlad, you got a nice meal, and most of the reasons it sucks are directly attributable to being rushed and explicitly needing to end the setting.
There's not a single nice meal to be had in the rise of skywalker, and it sucks for no understandable developmental reason, it was just made badly.

However you slice it, GW made a Disney Star Wars before Disney ruined Star Wars. Before Game of Thrones ruined itself. It wasnt politics, it wasnt mandated to be this bad, it just was this bad, due to laziness. Its sort of amazing in a sense.
It sure as hell gave a template to all the other franchises which got rekt by current year, due to how it ignores the lore almost entirely and its just corporate mandated BS, then it was replaced by something worse, a walking skinsuit of the setting. But nobody in Hollywood would have even heard about all this, so its that meme "Its wierd that it happened twice." (Well, the 2nd time would be the real template which Hollywood then began to copy, which was arguably Ghostbusters all-female stars.)

End times is the biggest BS ever from GW. The stupid idea of a new CEO whose entire intent was to reduce the amount and complexity of models they had to make. Pathetic, ruined WH, that CEO respects nothing, is a moron, deserves criticism.

    • @thomasprice7893
      @thomasprice7893 Місяць тому +5

That CEO has taken them to heights of profitability and public awareness they've never even approached before, and honestly he was 100% correct in the notion of reducing model count for the Fantasy brand - the vast majority of consumers do NOT have the time or skill to invest into armies comprised of dozens of units arranged into rank formations, and are intimidated by the very idea.
I'm sure he gave the mandate that the WHF game had to be reworked into looser, smaller units like what 40k does. But the thing is, he's never demonstrated any care for the lore beyond what sells, so I sincerely doubt he had any input on the Aids of Shitmar high fantasy reboot - it's just not the kind of thing he cares about or would have much input on. Someone else had to pitch it to him. THAT is where the blame really lies.
The correct move would've been having the Old World go through some sort of mini-end times and advancing the timeline a few hundred years, having various factions and warfare evolve into what we see in AoS whilst keeping the beloved setting and not making the lore absolutely AIDS.

@@thomasprice7893 As a consumer, I really don't care whether he increased investor dividends. Overall good points, though his disregard for the lore as you say is kind of my point. Suddenly changing the approach/lore is going to be upsetting for people who love a particular IP, and you can apply that to any well known fantasy or sci-fi story.

    • @thomasprice7893
      @thomasprice7893 Місяць тому +2

@@kylethompson1379 Yeah but that's My point though
He's pretty much a corporate droid who doesn't give a shit about the lore either way, if someone had told him the correct way was to keep WHF and change up the gameplay he would've done that. But someone told him to go with the Aids of Shitmar reboot - the responsibility lies with THAT person.

This novel should have been titled Offscreen because that's where it all happens.
The Everchosen almost dies at the beginning of his own novel and has to be saved by a misfiring gun instead of triumphing by his own abilities. They don't waste time doing things wrong. Then a verminlord interrupts the climactic duel, which happens in the books and in both I find a ridiculous decision, it's like they're making fun of Archaon. Sometimes it's painfully noticeable that things were written by different authors. In the books after the battle of Atldorf the Imperials decide that their situation is untenable and evacuate what's left to Averheim. They are defeated again and retreat to Bretonnia fighting their way all the way. In the books you see what happens in that battle. It's a battle with lots of great daemons and such. As far as I remember Archaon doesn't participate in that battle in the books. Ungrim does die there being the only dwarf to keep his oaths to help the empire. Karl Franz (Sigmar possessing his corpse would be more accurate) gets the wind of heavens because Sigmar was trapped in said wind and when the Vortex is undone he is free and brings the wind when he possesses Karl, two for one. It sounds absurd but no more than the average in End times. As far as I know Sigmar never loses said wind of heavens in the books. The novel has barely started and it is the one that contradicts the books the most by a wide margin. On the other side Bretonnia is a mess, and they end up in Athel Loren with the elves. The skaven are infinite, chaos is infinite, there are as many forces of evil as the plot needs, logic is irrelevant. But if there is something that can ignore logic it is chaos. The chaos wastes do not need to follow the logic of the material world given how influenced they are by chaos, but in these novels things just happen because they do, the plot requires it and there is no logic. In the books Ulrik's flame is also extinguished by Teclis. Which is stupid because it helps chaos and even more stupid because apparently the city can never be taken as long as the flame is not extinguished, so Middleheim could have contained infinite chaos forever, which makes no sense but it's what they wrote and it will be even more stupid when you see the consequences of Middleheim's fall. Gelt binds the wind of metal, in the books a dwarf speculates that Grungnir has blessed him, but no, he just has the wind of metal. The phoenix guard being able to speak after Asuryan's death makes the elven civil war even more absurd than it was. Not only do they know when they will die they know how many phoenix kings there will be and when they will die so they knew all the stupidity of "Malekith true king" and they didn't say or do anything. Everything in End Times is dumb and stupid. Caradryel gets the wind of fire the same way in the books. Apparently you don't have to do anything to get linked to the winds. They bond with people on their own, by the mere fact of being free of the vortex. Which doesn't explain why there weren't people bound to the winds before the creation of the vortex. Yes, Teclis resurrects someone without turning them undead and without using dark magic to do so. I don't know how much pre-existing lore breaks that. In any case Tyrion comes back, uncursed and bound to the wind of light making the great elven civil war even more stupid. Lileath is a stupid character and doesn't see the future, only the absurd plot that was written for End Times and only serves to advance it and for other characters to do absurd and stupid things without absurd justification because she says so. If she saw the future she would never have allowed Middleheim to fall, it's just a lazy excuse to fail to justify the unjustifiable. Your rant is justified and that's even though you haven't reached the greatest stupidity with Lileath and Middleheim. The story is so bad that the more they try to justify what happens the more holes and inconsistencies they create. Teclis betrayed his brother and put him on the path to death and madness, then resurrected him, that's what End Times thinks logic looks like. The elves ending up with half the winds makes some sense considering they made and unmade the vortex and Teclis can apparently control and guide where they end up in the books at least to a limited extent and while he doesn't personally link any of them he does make some winds link to other characters. The battle at Athel Loren doesn't happen offscreen in the books and I think it ends with Be'lakor being locked in a gem. Then an Bretonnian angry because the Lady doesn't exist and it was just Lileath frees Be’lakor, which makes him the meanest character in all of End Times, an impressive achievement for such a minor character and against so much competition. Apparently in the novel he is a completely different character doing just the opposite.
What happens with Nagash and his black pyramid is shown in the books, basically the skaven blow it up and since Nagash is much weaker he has to join the others.
Isabella was possessed by a Nurgle daemon in the books, eventually Vlad frees her from the possession by sacrificing his own life. So her killing Vlad at least isn't more character destruction.

    • @davidhernando353
      @davidhernando353 Місяць тому

The absurd plan is to bring Nagah back, but not too strong so she has to collaborate with the living instead of killing all life on the planet. That's why they have her absorb Aenarion's curse. But it seems that wasn't enough or the writing keeps contradicting itself or they forgot so the Black Pyramid explodes and Nagash goes to Athel Loren too.
5 novels and books at this point and chaos has destroyed Kislev, the Empire (with help from Teclis because otherwise they would be defeated forever in Middleheim). The Skaven have destroyed 2 entire continents with meteorites, all the rest of the old world, all the rest of the planet that Grimgor doesn't raze they destroy, they destroy Nagash's pyramid. Chaos is literally doing nothing compared to the skaven, it's absurd that they are secondary characters in the supposed story about their ultimate triumph predicted since the game exists.
Thanquol? As I recall in the books he survives the destruction of the planet accompanying the verminking. The skaven saw what was coming and basically moved skavenplague to some kind of pocket dimension or something and that's how they end up in Age of Sigmar.
The author of the novel seems dedicated to contradicting the books at every turn or he didn't bother to read previous works, which wouldn't surprise me.
There are infinite whatevers at all times. In the books it was more that with Athel Loren filled with more elves than ever the local beastmen are exterminated.
Nagash gives Mannfred as a gift because he is ultimately responsible for the death of Tyrion and Alarielle's daughter, that doesn't change.
Counterargument: Mannfred, to get revenge, destroys the planet he is on, is he going to kill himself just to annoy others? Although a better question would be why Tyrion doesn't cut off his head on the spot and then burn the corpse, although vampires can, according to the RPG, resurrect themselves if someone gets the remains and performs a highly complex necromantic ritual. So it could be argued that locking him up was the best thing to do, although with so many ultra-powerful wizards I'm sure they could have annihilated him without leaving even ashes.
But then the author puts so few security measures in the prison so that it is clear that it is a stupid decision, made just to be a stupid decision.
Kairos' death in the book is prior to the fall of Averheim in the books if I remember correctly and it happens on screen.
In the books there are no infinite armies of beatmen and Grombrindal does not appear that I remember. Although there is an attack by druchii who after Khaine's death have gone over to the side of Khorne along with other chaos troops, mostly Khorne I think. Vlad must be very popular with the writers because he is the only character who seems sane most of the time.
The simple explanation for what Lileath says is that the author has not read any previous novels.
Yes, dropping Middleheim was the stupidest decision imaginable. There is no reason for it and even within the stupid narrative of End Times it contradicts the goals of multiple characters.
I think Lileath's Haven was something other than Age of Sigmar which was destroyed as a result of the angry Bretonnian freeing Be'lakor and telling him about it. But none of that happens in the novel so it is even more incoherent than in the books.
The Bretonnians leave for the same reasons in the books, which is still stupid because they escape the final battle to save the world. So they are actively contributing to their own deaths.
The elf who turns into a vampire and Tyrion kills was the one who accompanied Eltharion in the first novel. In the books she is turned into a vampire but does not die and becomes the avatar of the goddess of death. So now there is a character alive in the books and dead in the novels, two counting Thanquol.
In the books they also end up in Middleheim in the same absurd way. Teclis, the high elf with the highest opinion of humans suddenly a racist, I still think things can only be done so badly deliberately.
Grimgor I don't know how he ends up in Middleheim, but he's basically been beyond the old world exterminating skaven populations in various countries, destroying various nations and wiping out the chaos dwarves. It ties into the lore of beasts, which makes about as much sense as a dwarf doing the same thing and not turning to stone in the process. Maybe since he's linked to a wind he ends up in the teleportation spell by chance.
Grimgor was supposed to be the chosen one of one god and Skarsnik of the other, but they forgot about Skarsnik's existence so Grimgor.
Malekith hated for 6,000 years forgiven in a minute by Grombrindal and Alith Anar.
Malekith Grimgor is more or less like in the books.
The servants of chaos killing each other is quite common, Throg in the books hates Sigvald even more because he has been insulting and belittling him all the time, it's a purely personal revenge, and he takes advantage of the chaos of the battle and the fact that the enemy is wounded. Incredibly I have defended a small scene of this disaster, I feel dirty.
What happens with Settra is seen at the end of the first book (the novel ends after Nagash's resurrection, the book goes much further). Nagash manages to defeat the Tomb Kings in a long and immense war of undean against undead throughout Nehekara, the best part of the book, for me, which the novel completely ignores.
Nagash leaves Settra's body broken but conscious and lying in the sand to despair for all eternity and be buried by the sands. Then the gods of chaos restore him and offer him infinite gifts and power in exchange for his service to them. But Settra is of no use and rejects all that power and leaves. Which makes Settra one of the best characters in this whole mess.
Then he appears more or less like in the novel to save Nagash and tell him more or less the same thing, Settra is of no use, Settra rules. It may be the best scene in all of End Times not because it is "cool" but because the actions that the characters take to get there are logical and coherent with their personalities, something absent from the rest of End Times.
Hellebron, Alarielle, Durythu, Isabella, Grimmir or Gotrek and Vlad is just like in the book.
If your plot is stupid it can only work through the incompetence and stupidity of the characters involved.
In the books at least Sigmar never loses the wind of heavens.
The ending is just like in the books, stupid and pointless.

There's another set of End Times books that fill out the events the novels didn't say, but you can't get them from the BL site. For example, Thanquol: The End Times - Volume 4, Book 1 explains the Lizardmen plotline and more of Queek's campaign but good luck getting these without piracy or ebay lol.
It's bullcrud that half the story is written in another set of books that are much harder to get and make the other set incomprehensible to understand.

Ok, the rant at the start makes sense. This may sound like one of those erm actually obscure lore source comments you mentioned, but the end times campaign books that came out at the same time as these had lore books that came with them. (I’ve read all of them bar the Khaine one, and of the novels only the Nagash one). So it seems what they’ve done is covered the stuff in the novels as happening “off screen” if it was covered in the campaign lore books. As that covers the fall of Averhiem.

In a lot of good writing, good stories, characters *are* idiots. Because its so relatable common irl. But in a story you have to make the reader care about the characters, whether they're doing something cool or stupid. By the sound of it, they didnt really have the time for that, having to cover a massive amount of characters in very little content.

In perfect fairness, the task of linearly retelling a poorly written story, while also extrapolating point by point why each individual beat in the story is bad, is difficult one even in a vacuum.
However, with the sheer volume of how much there is to go over, and that he is also making callbacks to his previous endtimes, if you aren't either
A: Giving it your full attention
      Or
B: Are already familiar with the lore
I can totally see why it'd be hard to parse.
As for the manic energy, that's just the boy hummus baby, he's a man-thing of passion and I'm all for it but that's definitely a matter of taste.
