    Jules, fascinating as ever, as you say many prices still at very healthy levels. Finding that rarer paperbacks much more difficult to find these days

      Absolutely Peter, maybe they are just holed up in other people's collections?

    I loved going to Kayo Books on Post Street in San Francisco back in the 80s and 90s. Two floors worth of great vintage paperbacks and I was able to buy several cool books!

      That's awesome. I was standing outside in early 2019. I'd been phoning there number all week and I emailed ahead....stony silence. Probably would have spent a fortune. 😕

    My Panther first of 'Androids' is a much higher grade than that one and I paid less than half of £65. I am lacking a few of those later Foss Ballards in P, though...great roundup as ever, Jules!

      Thanks Steve, these prices always raise eyebrows. PKD is a constant collectible author though.

    Might get a copy of The thing as its one of my favourite films !
    Cant believe the price of Rage ?! Assuming its to King withdrawing the book due to similar real life incidents with the perpetrators having a copy of the novel.. I have the 80s bachman omnibus paperback and even they are £50 odd !!

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  7 місяців тому

      I sold those omnibus editions and I can't quite believe it either! There must be a reason behind Rage, maybe a viewer can reveal the true reason for it's collectibility.🙂

      Hi, there's a couple of reasons for the hefty price tag on Rage.
      1. Stephen King wanted to see if he could replicate his own success, which is why he created the Richard Bachman pseudonym. To stack the deck against "Dicky" (King's name for Bachman), he and his publisher treated the Bachman novels as a category he refers to as "just plain books." There was no marketing for them, they were just kind of put out there and whatever happened is whatever happened. To estimate that the early Bachman novels, before King was outed as being Bachman, sold even 10% as much as he was selling under his own name is probably being too generous, so there aren't that many copies of those books out there to begin with.
      2. In the late 80s and early 90s, after the early Bachman books had been bound into an omnibus and sold with King's name prominently on the cover, there were a couple of school shootings where the perpetrators had been found to have a copy of Rage among their possessions. King felt uncomfortable with that fact, so he asked his publisher to no longer print copies of Rage. Those two facts mean the most affordable way to get a copy of Rage is to get the omnibus reprint.
      I'm surprised to see the paperback copy of the omnibus goes for £50. I got a hardcover copy of the omnibus for $50 US several years ago. It wasn't a first printing, it was a 5th printing, but even so it should cost substantially more than a paperback copy. @@JulesBurt

      Fantastic information, just what's needed to increase all our knowledge. I sort of knew about the original reason for Bachman but didn't know anything about the school shootings. Thanks very much for increasing our knowledge on this highly collectable author 👍

    The trouble with Ace Paperbacks in the 80s was that the covers succumbed to acidification, as evidenced by that $300 Neuromancer. Mine is the same. Sadly, they are almost unreadable as they snap off in a breeze. But it has such a striking cover i can see why people want to own it. I also have Mirror Shades edited by Bruce Sterling by Ace Books, which is the same.
    Thanks for the look, great video. Good look at the MTI novelisations, £30 for Robocop! Id understand more if it was the white US non poster edition. And £60 for an ex-library book is cheek.

    • @JulesBurt

      I have the set of Dirty Harry novelisations (check out the video) which are surprisingly in amazing condition and no browning.
