In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm hearing music from the Mobile Suit Gundam Original Soundtrack for the first time. Unicorn is the powerful overture for the 4-part series of full soundtrack albums. As in my past reactions of music from Attack on Titan, I found this music by Hiroyuki Sawano to be excellent. His orchestrations are top notch, as he weaves themes through different textures, keys, and orchestral instrumentation. I hope you enjoy!

"To my only desire, the beast of possibility. A symbol of hope."
Also, that scene when he is dropping from Garencieres in Dakar... And Banagher talking to Unicorn... Oh boy... Will have to watch all 7 episodes again...

When it first goes into NTD mode, and Mineva Zabi recognizes it for what it is and just goes "GUNDAM" under her breath... the fanservice goosebumps get me every time.
poor Ple Twelve too... she was not ready for that...
The ghost of Mozart was sitting on my shoulder. When it was over he said, "Das is gut."
For more of his Gundam works I would also recommend the songs, Vigilante, Xi, Mobius and Bloody F8.
Vigilante is SO good so is Xi 😭💗

i think it better😍
Personally I really liked the EARth track as the space shuttle opener in Hathaway’s Flash. So much heavy emotion of history and humanity can be felt through it. Made me tear up the first time I heard it.
@@jholt8518 yeah that one is amazing
@@jholt8518 Honestly the entire Hathaway soundtrack is phenomenal.
Unicorn OST I believe is Sawano's Magnum Opus.
Hathaway tho
For me, Sawanos Magnum Opus is either Unicorn or Binary Star from Die Neue These. Sawano was born to make the op for Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
@@VRGUILEit's the Whole OST of Gundam Unicorn
@@VRGUILEfirst time I’ve ever seen a single person ever mention Die Neue These unprompted, nice
For me it's his work on Xenoblade X.
The achievements of Hiroyuki Sawano, Joe Hisaishi, and Susumu Hirasawa in anime music are comparable to those of Hans Zimmer and John Williams in Hollywood.
Don't forget Shiro Sagisu
@@mastermega8sagisu is good but I don’t think he up there’s with those goat
BIG agree!
Don't forget also Kenji Kawai (Gundam 00) 😀
So true!
This soundtrack is what made me get into Gundam. When I saw the trailer for this series and heard his music behind it I watched every Gundam episode and series that summer in release order to get up to Unicorn. I even landed a job working at a Gundam store that fall because of it. All thanks to this amazing music.
This composer really captures the "sweet sorrow" which is a major motif in all the Gundam series.
Wow that's amazing! Do you also build the model kits?
@@treywiley5294 yup lol half my paycheck went back to the owner cuz I bought a bunch of model kits there every week. I had a UA-cam channel about the Gundam kits and everything.
@sakidickerson thats dope!! You got really into it and I don't blame you. I've been addicted to everything that's gundam since I was a toddler lol.
I remember unicorn being the first show i watched, and it was so amazing, i had to watch it twice to understand what was going on since i was like 12 but i absolutely loved it
That PG 00-Unicorn is the best kit ever made. I sank like $1000 into it for the base kit, lighting, boosters, weapons and everything. I hate that it was my first Gunpla, because nothing since has come close.
Gundam Thunderbolt was made for you. Unicorn's final third made me cry.
That poor Puru.
@@DIEGhostfishyou put some damn respect on the name Marida Cruz! Puru clone she may be but she's head and shoulders above the rest.
@@TheIllustriouBlueJay I mean yes, she is, because she actually got to grow up. BUt I love all the Purus. The only downside of the SRW tribute of Marida meeting her sisters is the failure to include saving the unnamed ones.
We need to get hin to the Mobile suit Gundam Thunderbolt soundtrack
hit him with all that Jazz.
Naruyoshi Kikuchi reactions in general, especially outside of mainstream soundtrack work, would be a sight to see.
Turn A.
He needs to watch Thunderbolt not just listen to the soundtrack as its part of the narrative, rather then the background its story pushing music, theres not much point just listening to the soundtrack without its context, I honestly can't think of any film or TV show that uses music like Thunderbolt does and I'm older then Gundam itself.
And thunderbolt fantasy
We need to get Doug into some Ace Combat OST. Zero, Unsung War and Daredevil. It would be interesting to hear Doug's thoughts on those.
This song specifically plays at the final moments of the first episode of the Unicorn OVA series, just as the main character uses the titular Unicorn for the first time. So you're spot on with the way it ends hanging to keep you hooked.
I personally liked the 'RX-0' in episode 2 over 'Unicorn'. If 'Unicorn' left you hanging, 'RX-0' was the payoff.
Gundam Unicorn OST maybe is the best and masterpiece work of Hiroyuki Sawano, songs as Unicorn, Zero Gravity, A Letter, The Univers - Licht Meer, On your Mark, Mobile Armor, Full Frontal and Sternengesang are amazing. Thumbs up for bringing a Gundam theme reaction.
You really should do more of his Gundam stuff like you did with Attack on Titan. So many amazing songs and you really never see others react to them.
Not only Gundam stuff, All of his stuff like Aldnoah Zero, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, Guilty Crown, Seraph of the End, Re:Creator, etc. His music is gold.
His unicorn album was his magnum opus, literally telling the story of the anime through an entire album, my favorite is "mobile armor" because it is a sad song and the context around it is that Loni the mobile armor pilot was like originally supposed to be the Lalah equivalent to the main character but the idea was scrapped nonetheless she still has a tragic tale driven by inescapable hate being fed to her by the weapon she wields the mobile armor Shamblo.
Aside from Unicorn theme, another memorable track to really review is Gundam UC OST Track 5 - Gundam especially the 2nd half. It gives me chills everytime I hear it.
@@edisonuy7707Agreed! That track is basically 2 tracks combining into one but still makes absolute sense for them to be one track.. Definitely one of my top 5 from the unicorn OST along with the battle, mobile armor, madnug, and unicorn.
I agree. So much amazing music all throughout the Gundam universe. I even loved some of the songs in the BUILD series which were more like pop songs, but were catchy as hell.
I see Sawano Hiroyuki and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, I autohit like.
I have alwasy been quite partial for Yuki Kajiura, shes been around for about 25 years, to my knowledge working and creating groups often for anime and games.
I like how you go out of your way to find out more about the recommended media 😊
Some of my other favorite soundtracks that Sawano made for Gundam Unicorn: Full Frontal (Antagonist's theme), Mobile Suit (General Battle Theme), Mobile Armor (An Unnecessary Lose), Mad-Nug (One Must Fight) - Brackets for context
Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn was a 7 (1 hour) episode series meant to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Franchise as a Whole released between Feb. of 2010 to June 2014.
Gundam as a whole is a long standing franchise, comparable in age to Star Wars.
The franchise has multiple different universes/timelines some of which interconnect while others do not. Unicorn follows the UC (Universal Century) timeline - the timeline first set with the original show and the longest continuous one.
My friends have described Char as Japan’s Darth Vader, their incredibly iconic villain recognizable across the nation
Listening to that while watching the Unicorn Gundam statue transform in Odaiba was an awesome scratch off my bucket list! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Speaking of Seed Freedom, you should check out the final soundtrack for it. It’s called “Decisive Battle for Freedom” composed by Toshihiko Sahashi, who also made the soundtrack for all of the Seed series.
I'm so glad you did this song, and it's very auspicious that I found your channel today! UNICORN is one of those songs that can motivate me through anything; five more reps, ten more steps, picking myself off the ground - anything. I just hear that chorus pickup, the strings swoop in, and I've suddenly got the gas in my tank to take on the world.
I would love to see you do Time's Scar (Yasunori Mitsuda) from the game Chrono Cross, or Dance of Curse (Yoko Kano) from The Vision of Escaflowne anime.
I wasn't expecting Gundam! Great video!
Gotta say, found your channel by complete accident. And my only regret was not finding it sooner. It is a joy to watch you react so genuinely and openly to all types of music. Keep up being awesome Doug!
You should listen the OST of the original 1979 Gundam series, it's amazing (I suggest you songs like Gallant Char or Afraid Of Battle)
Those too, but if we gotta start with the go theme “Tobe! Gundam!”. Such a cheesy, geeky intro with 70s vibes. Doug’s reaction is sure to be hilarious.
Hiroyuki Sawano songs
From Solo Leveling anime: "Dark Aria "
From Re:Creators anime: "Gravity Wall" or "Layers"
From 86 anime: "Avid" or "Hands Up to the Sky"
From Aldnoah Zero anime: "aLIEz"
For a newer one: Strangefake
2006 Iryu Team Medical Dragon TV Drama: "Aesthetic"
@@DatCheese that one's a classic, i love it, the music he made in nurse Aoi series is also good
2 more songs I'd recommend from Unicorn - 3rdMob. :RE:I AM MARIE and Mobile Armor. Mobile Armor plays like an entire mini-story just on it's own track.
This is why I started my Gundam journey! I still stand to this day this is Sawano's Magnus Opus🗿. Now would recommend ”The Witch From Mercury” from one of the more recent hits they made for a Gundam series!
This and 'Mobile Suit' gives me goosebumps every time, so memorable and impactful. and the visuals of the show and the settings of each scene worked so well for the changes in instruments used and how they join together at points. Definitely listen to Mobile Suit and maybe even the scenes theyre played from, its a great ride!
Yeah! I specially like the W-Rec Mix version. He should do a react video to it.
His use of brass and percussion in many of his pieces always gives me drum and bugle corps vibes. Bet someone could arrange a great show out of his work.
This is such a mindfuck for me man. I subscribed to you for your metal music reviews but during this time I really got into Gundam as well. Amazing music in it, and the classic show along with it's sequel Zeta are masterpieces. I think you could really appreciate them.
Oh man, so happy you chose to do this one. The Unicorn soundtrack is absolutely incredible.
I'd love to hear what you have to say about Banshee from the same OST. It's kinda like a rival piece to this one.
This was so fun~! It’s really awesome to see someone who clearly knows more about music than me reacting to one of my fave osts :3
gundam has some insane music in the series. Another you should check out at some point is the song Crescent Moon by composer Masaru Yokoyama from the Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans soundtrack II; it's an incredibly epic sounding piece that to me is one of the peaks of the series.
The Answer from 86 is a Sawano song I particularly like, along with X.U. from Seraph of the End, and I only remember Aldnoah/Zero thanks to his music, as well, with Breathless, No Differences, and aLIEz being my favorites from that series.
Gundam Thunderbolt would be an OST that's right up your alley. The entire series had a musical backdrop of free jazz and the themes of the series are tied integrally with music.
really love how this music started playing during the 1st OAV/Movie along with the track "RX-0" which is a faster paced version of Unicorn.
The payoff in RX-0 was better than Unicorn imo. He needs to review RX-0!
I am literally watching this under a gundam blanket. Glad to get some gundam reactions. Still waiting on the opera from final fantasy 6 though.
The franchise that always throws me off at how CRAZY the music goes is the Kirby series. In particular I recommend (two planets approach the Roche limit) such a crazy piece!
You were spot on with the ending leaving you wanting more as it ends. The overture is played in the final scene of the first episode of this particular series and ends on the titular Unicorn Gundam finally being revealed, only to cut to black right as it leaps into its first battle.
I only really got into Gundam sort of recently, last year. they'd put up one of the movies (Cucuruz Doan's Island) on the official UA-cam channel for a couple weeks, so I watched it, and I found a lot to like there! Of course it was musically interesting to a degree, but the particular ways it zoomed in and focused on the human element of its war plot spoke to me. So after that, I went on my Netflix and watched the movie trilogy version of the original show (Gundam I, II: Soldiers of Sorrow, and III: Encounters in Space), and I think they're going to live rent-free in my head for the rest of my life. I wouldn't say they're perfect, but the level of narrative sophistication on display throughout the productions is mind-blowing for an anime from 1979.
I love this piece, it exists in my playlist for many years 😍 it’s really suitable for the scene of Unicorn Gundam first appearance
It will be super interesting to see Doug's reaction to the Gundam F91 Symphonic Poem.
Gundam is amazing, glad to discover your channel. Hope you do more anime soundtracks
I was already a Gundam fan before watching Unicorn (Gundam 00, alternate universe) and when I got the scene of this song, had to pull back my jaw how awesome the music was putting that much emotions in it. Then it got me into watchin the original universe/timeline, which this series is from. My second best piece of music on this soundtrack is "Audrey".
Great choice, I've got a new appreciation for this track now.
If you ever come back to the Unicorn soundtrack, try “Banshee”.
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS OMG HABAJSJAJSJSJJA
A lot of the music in Gundam shows is orchestral due to being a space opera. I would suggest listening to Main Title from the OST of Char's Counterattack. It does the same thing for the movie as Unicorn does for its show. Alternatively, I also suggest Daikaisen from the BGM Collection Vol.2 of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Both of these are by Shigeaki Saegusa who was behind the music for Zeta Gundam, ZZ (Double Zeta) Gundam and Char's Counterattack.
Gundam Unicorn is a more modern show in the same timeline as the original show. The pieces I've picked are from older shows that chronologically happen before Gundam Unicorn just so you can hear what came before.
W request and reaction I love this song!
from gundam unicorn some of my favorite ost tracks include
piano no.1
piano no.3
ego
gundam wing ost has some bangers too
Tokimeite Harmony
zero densetsu
The theme of this anime series is "possibility". The protagonist's mech itself was called "The beast of possibility" and the song leaves the feeling of open-endedness to the audience as it meant to be.
This sounds SO MUCH like some of the music, from SOCOM 3 (part of a video game series, based on the US Navy SEALS). It, too, is completely orchestral.
OH MY GOD I WASNT EXPECTING THIS
This song is why i love using Unicorn in SRW V
Unicorn is Sawano's best work imo. Also check out Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury ost. This my personal favorite Aerial Rebuild ua-cam.com/video/q_v9cztMW6M/v-deo.html
Ahh that was an adorable reaction. You should check out the soundtrack to Soul Blade that’s an oldy but a goody.
Just discovered this channel, would be amazing to see you cover some of the OSTs from Super Robot Wars, like Dark Prison, Just One Chance, or Matte Black Bullet.
The live performance of Mineva that Sawano composed for this series features an amazing viola solo. I'd definitely recommend checking out the recording when you can.
I would love to see some coverage of more tracks from the Unicorn series. Specifically Mobile Armor and MAD-NUG, which combined i think tell a story all on their own. they were used in one of the most impactful scenes in the series and the amazing music does nothing but accentuate it even more.
you really need to watch the animation with this it soo well done
日本じゃゲーセンでこれ聴きながら戦えるんだから贅沢なものよ
He does incredible work, but honestly every Gundam has a phenomenal soundtrack, I’d love to see a review of some of the backing tracks from Iron Blooded Orphans, like Vulnerable Surface
There are a ton of great works from multiple composers throughout the Gundam series, all with different vibes
Just got to the channel too, so unsure if you saw Sawano’s live recording suites. He has one for attack on titan and one for gundam. Highlights all of the real musicians who take part in his work.
Id love to see your reaction on mobile armor or banshee. 2 of my favorite tracks from the gundam unicorn soundtrack.
Gundam Thunderbolt also has a amazing OST if you every have a chance to listen.
There is another Gundam Unicorn Overture with some vocals from Mizuki and Sawsano san is playing the piano try to listen that one. Its also a Masterpiece.
Speaking of Gundam SEED, I highly recommend the song "Kira, Sono Kokoro no Mama Ni" from the
MOBILE SUITE GUNDAM SEED DESTINY Original Motion Picture Soundtrack 3 by Toshihiko Sahashi. It is one of the best offerings from the SEED series and a fan favorite track.
I would love your reaction to 'The Battle' Soundtrack from Gundam!
Hiroyuki Sawano's one of the best compositions for me personally.
Hi! Love your reactions and analysis from an expert's perspective on music, classic, modern and all in between.
Would like to suggest the next song, from an Anime, that has living rent free on my mind since I was a kid.
Shin Getter Robo OST Volume 2-Yuusou
Well, this was a orchestra accompanied by a chorus, drums, guitars etc.... So yeah, the live version is amazing....
Sawano my fav composer for anime and game OSTs
His sound is very distinct from most of his peers aside from maybe Takashi Ohmama who did the OST for Gundam: The Witch From Mercury so you can usually instantly identify him. Of course it helps he usually uses the same small pool of vocalists for most of his pieces with vocals.
Ho can Mad-Nug be next or laplace or THE BATTLE some of the best OST from unicorn they don’t disappoint There is also the banshee theme that’s another good one
Hiroyuki Sawano is so good. He does a lot of great stuff.
This scene is awesome in the Anime. The transformation model was made on a CAD program, so the parts and pieces of the Unicorn actually work. They literally transcribed the design into the plastic model kit. It's one of my favorites. I can reenact the scene in real life with my model kit.
For gundam works in general there's Yokko Kanno's "Moon," from Turn A, but that's a song, rather than a piece of purely orchestral work. She did other stuff without vocals thoug.
A bit of story about Unicorn, it's part of the main setting of the series like the first serie from 1979, Z, ZZ and others, one of the most heartbreaking theme of Gundam's themes is the hope for a better future so older people can make sacrifices for newer generation. (side note it's what happened in Fukushima incident where older workers went near cores to study and stuff.. )
Sawano's music is full of these feelings, also wonderful with action (mad-nug, gundam reverserd,), a story to tell (Banshee, a second unit of the Unicorn developed in secret, with a first part of the song mimic the alarm when it's deployed for the first time and narrate the fight), emotional speech like On Your Mark...
Really good music.
Also worked on Narrative movie(last part of Unicorn Novel) e newer Hathaway (Xi really recommended) movies.
for another one of his works i would also recommend rx-0 from the same unicorn ost and ESIRNUS from Hathaway ost
One composer who works a lot with anime I would recommend giving a look, is Shiro Sagisu.
Unicorn is one of my fav sawano works. And its more magical and makes goosebump when you see it on theater because this song apear when the robot reveals he is a gundam and do gundam think 😂
He has another soundtrack under the same album called moblie suit which is also great to listen
Like a lot of folks, I got into classical music through soundtracks from movies, TV, and video games. While I've branched out to "classical" classical, I still appreciate when musicians take the time to listen to the soundtracks I love so much.
Gundam and your songs❤
Would love to recommend macross plus OST as well for review
I would also suggest Ariel Rebuilt from Gundam Witch From Mercury. Especially the extended one that wasn't in the show.
Some contex though, Gundam is a series that has multiple timelines and off shoots. They can have wildly diffrent themes or feels to them. Like Thunderbolt used a lot of free jazz and was really dark. Build Fighters was more fun loving ect. Unicorn is in the main UC timeline that has been going on since the 70s and the Gundam machines at this point has a long history of being the top dogs on the battlefield. So pretty heroic or menacing music follows them.
I also really like the themes for Iron Blooded Orphans and it's spin off for a mobile game Iron Blooded Orphans URDR Hunt.
YAYYY GUNDAM STUFF
I think you'd like You Say Run from the My Hero Academia anime series. It has some great evocative moments and they use it sparingly throughout the series for key moments of intense heroics.
Yah! Hayashi Yuki's works would be great to review. He has also worked with Sawano Hiroyuki in the past too.
Oh man, somebody better link up Mr. Helvering here with some Shigeaki Saegusa's work in either Zeta or CCA and Toshihiko Sahashi's Strike Shutsugeki.
I would recommend, as my personal favourite Sawano track, "SymphonicsuiteNT No.5", from the Mobile Suit Gundam: Narrative OST. Narrative is the semi-sequel to Unicorn, and suite 5 carries Sawano's melodies and leitmotifs into a more subdued but no less emotionally impactful interweaving.
You should also check out the sound track of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counter Attack, the main title theme, “SALLY”, and “Nu Gundam” are all great tracks and so is aurora though many follow a similar leitmotif. I would also greatly recommend the sound track of Zeta Gundam AEUG is a great one full of sorrow and resilience. “Kantaisen” is also a great track, its name meaning “Ship Battle”
Yer gundam unicorn REALLY got me into his stuff, still gives me the fizz, 14 years layer.
Glad they did do a live orchestra of this sound track.
Rx-0 from the same sound track gave me much fizz as well
I think watching the scene while listening would also be a huge benefit to your enjoyment of this song
Doug on the bongos!
ファンは、このOSTを聴くと叫ばずにはいられないんだ。
「ユニコーーーーーン!!」
You should check out his unChild and 2V-ALK Albums.
Drums are, if I'm not mistaken, japanese taiko ones. With a few touches of timpanis here and there.
The symphony titled Thousand Nests may be of interest to you.
you should try listening to "On your mark". Also from Mobile suit Gundam: Unicorn
Would love you to react to a selection of tracks called gundam symphony performed by the london symphony orchestra. Ive only found this on you tube. It has orchestral takes on some of the franchises big tunes.
If you found this impressive, I wonder how you might like the music of Space Battleship Yamato. The composer, Hiroshi Miyagawa, is a person of some note in Japanese classical music. Your starting point is the album Symphonic Suite Yamato, the album I tell everyone they need if they are a fan of Yamato or the Americanization, Star Blazers. It is available on Apple iTunes Store, Star Blazers Sound Almanac 1977 Vol. 1.
There are many other albums (MANY others!) available but not all are on iTunes.
I hope you enjoy. 😁
That was fantastic! If you get around to video game soundtracks again, I would love to hear your thoughts on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney specifically the track Pursuit-Cornered. In the game you play fledgling defense attorney Phoenix Wright who must solve the mystery of his mentor's death. It's a mystery in which he is also a suspect! Since the game is played like an interactive novel the soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to setting the tone or guiding the player. The track Cornered occurs like an auditory reward when you present evidence that contradicts a testimony. It has an upbeat, urgent tempo that tells the player they're on the right track. There is a 15th anniversary orchestration of music from the series that sounds just incredible.
