How To Remove Rusted on Lawn Tractor Wheels

  • Today I show you how to remove a seized or rusted on riding mower or lawn tractor rim from the axle, this can also apply to older gokarts with splined or keyed axles. MTD mowers have a bolt that holds on their rims with a unique axle that has a sorta square shape with two sides that are rounded and they use their own proprietary wheels.

    Mine was frozen bad, tried a puller, tried your method which was good, but still would not budge. I went back to my old bag of tricks that I used on other things like blower wheels and blower motors. The secret is to first knock it on further(which brakes it loose) then take it off. Take a piece of 3/4" ridged pipe(black Iron or galvanized) 2 or 3 feet long. It will fit over the shaft on the outside of the wheel. Hit it hard with a sledge and knock it in an 1/8 of an inch. That's it, not froze anymore, now use a puller or your method and it comes right off. Hope this helps someone with a really hard one to get off.

    Finally!.. someone smart enough to remove the rust from the axle BEFORE mounting the rim back on.. good job!!

    Thanks you 76hotrodF250. It worked with a few modifications. I have one of those MTD tractor since 1999. Time to replace the rear tires and get it ready for hurricane season. So I did not know what I was getting into until I started pulling and hammering at the tires. They would not come off. I blasted it with WD40 and nothing. I ran into your video and tried the heating trick but with a less tame propane torch. One wheel came off easily the other was was stubborn a a mule, but it gave away after some muscle with a jack hammer. keeping those videos coming I am sure there are a bunch of us out there with similar problems. thanks, save my Sunday afternoon. Cheers from Land O lakes Florida!

    The rear wheel on my Husqvarna Lawn tractor was frozen from rust. I beat on the rim for a week and the rim didn't even budge. I tried this method and it worked. I had to heat the hub several times and I put Liquid Wrench on the hot hub. Thank you for doing this video. Clint

    Mine was super seized.
    I ended up spraying PB blaster every day twice a day for a week.
    I ended up tipping the tractor so the affected wheel was higher than the other side and left it propped up like that until Two weeks were up…this helped the penetrating oil deep further down the shaft with the aid of gravity.
    I ended up using a harmonic balancer puller to break it free without the aid of heating with a torch.

    Great instructional video. I have a Toro snow thrower that has a stuck on rear wheel. I'm trying the WD40 trick first but if that fails will likely have to resort to using heat from a torch. Excellent comment btw on removing the wheels annually and servicing them. Wish I had known about removing the wheels and servicing regularly.

    I removed my rusted rear wheel on my John Deere with WD-40 and banged the rim with a heavy duty hammer, for a minute( had a new rim and tire to replace)...Then I hit it from the backside and it came off, an easy piece😅. Not everyone has that equipment, however the knocking part you showed gave me direction.,.so ty for that.😊

    Another cool video my friend. I know you don't mess with lawn tractors much anymore, so its a treat to see them here! Seeing this makes me glad I have garden tractors (Deere 318 and 445) with bolt on hubs instead of shaft mount! Whatever you do, I'll watch. I hope someday you decide to kill another pushmower though lol.

    The first thing you should do when you get a riding mower , is pull the wheels off and put never seize on the axels. Do this and you will never have this problem. Most people don't do it .

    2 things:
    1)Tireject will fix the tires.
    2) Air chisle with a blunt bit on the axle will get the wheel moving. If you do the heat thing, quench with a water hose.

  • @allenhess6583

    Rotiller wheel 40 years old. Used the heat and penetrating oil, also took the tire off the rim and used both methods to get wheel off. Took quite a bit of pounding. Axle had no rust and inside of wheel had no rust. I will generously lubricate the axle with never seize. The other wheel came off easily with just penetrating oil.

    Am dealing with a seized wheel on a 1988 Honda Harmony HT-R3009 riding mower. Had tried a couple methods seen on UA-cam without success including PB Blaster over 2 days. Only have a propane torch but will try it and hope that works. Good video.

    • @76hotrodF250
      @76hotrodF250  7 років тому

      John Kohler I had one of those old 3009 Honda riders years ago, good mower but mine smoked bad on startup so I sold it while it was still running. Heat is the best option for removing stuck wheels, a propane torch should be enough to get it plenty hot. You might even try quenching the heat afterwards with cold water to make the axle contract a bit but don't get it on the rim. Heat expands Cold retracts.

    You can damage the transmission case by banging on wheel . Drill, and use a puller, after heating .

    • @dougseaman8791
      @dougseaman8791 2 роки тому

      There are holes already in the rim to use a puller with. Heat the hub, quench with cold water and use the puller. If it doesn't move then use an air impact chisel with a flat end bit on the end of the puller. Always worked for me. Then put never seize on the axle when reassembling. Won't have a problem next time wheel has to come off. And, yes, you're right about possibly causing damage by beating on it with a big hammer.
