It WORKED, I knew to use an air hammer and heat but never thought of heat and water. You saved my wheel and now a subscribe. Must have watched a dozen other videos and my next move was to cut the wheel off.
I have watched a lot of your videos. Each one is like a master class in mechanics. Only from a common sense point of view. You don't always have to scrap the good parts or throw away parts and assemblies which could be fixed with basic knowledge. Almost like the lost art of blacksmiths. My dad used to take things to the blacksmith to get repaired that I could hardly believe came home fixed better than ever. Years of experience and listening to the old teachers is how you got so darn smart.
Taryl, great video!! I used your method of removal for a wheel/rim that was on a lawn tractor for 30 years & never removed .Your method worked like a charm !!!! thanks for your idea . KEEP ON TRUCKIN.
Taryl, thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge, you make us save a lot of money. You are very good at explaining and you make it so easy to understand. Thanks again!!
Thank you for all of your advice and suggestions and sharing all of your experiences. You have saved me time and money. I enjoy each video, you make. You always have away have making me laugh. Thank you very much for your time and help. Please keep up the great work.
Thanks Taryl, I have one right now that needs to come off. I was pretty sure you had the answer. I tried a heat gun but I don't think it got hot enough. I'll get it off now ! Thanks
In the auto business, they always tell us "Yer changing the brittleness of the metal using heat"!!!! I hate when they think we all don't know the GD use of the HOT WRENCH!!!!! I so want to change my 28 year profession to working on lawn equipment!!!! Nice vid Taryl!!!
+John Happel (Full Mast Hap) OH!!! I forgot, they want us to use that damn electric "Nut Buster"!!!! I believe it heats the metal the same way just w/o heat???? I say BS!!!! LOL!!!
I spent 2 days heating and beating a wheel before I cut the wheel off and sliced open the sleeve with a grinder. I even tried drilling holes in it and using a puller. I guess it's time for me to upgrade my air supply/tools!
Daryl do think this method would work on ariens snowblower axle to wheel, there's a rass bushing in them, and there a real stinker cant get it moving at,you must know all about these, its the pro 26,a d went to take the wheel off a d the axle came rite out, could not get the axle to move out of the wheel at all.
Taryl, Regarding old 5 hp Briggs horizontal snow blower/tiller engines: Are the threads (that secure a drive pulley) in the center of the crankshaft left hand?
That's the perfect way to do it BUT, what if I don't have a set of torches or a air hammer ? I've been spraying some penetrating oil for 2 weeks now, "nuffin"...The only torch I have is MAP gas. Not enough to bring the rim to cherry red.
1 problem the seal on transmission? I did this on an engine 1 time and burned out the oil seal. That was easy to replace but on some of these new transaxles you can't replace the seal.
If you got the rims with the wheel weight Holes...i've got rusty wheels like that off by jacking the tractor wheels off the ground & lean it to the opposite side of the jack.... Spray Good O'l Liquid wrench down the shaft..spin the wheel slowly (so the penetrating oil spirals down the inside of the rusty o'l rim & shaft) & let it sit overnight . Then connect your wheel puller Bolts to the tire rim thru the wheel weight Holes on the Rim turn your center bolt on to the axle. & Presto-change-o... There's Your Dinner.. No Damage to the rim either..
I've used the same trick for bleeder screws on brake calipers. (I live in Michigan where they salt the roads so bleeders rust up quick.) Works every time perfect, I heat the bleeder and surrounding iron about orange then quench with water and take it out with vise grips then I just put in a new bleeder if I need.
Look up Mapp - Pro torch. Should cost under $50 and it's pretty nice. Heats steel WAY hotter than propane and without the hassle of needing a separate oxy cylinder like the old mapp/oxy torches needed.
lewis hawks Not sure what you're doing wrong but we've never had a rusty item that we couldn't remove with this method before. Gotta heat it up really well and quench it. Sometimes it might take a few tries
This same trick works on hard boiled eggs. Take egg directly from boiled water to an ice bath and shell will peel off easy. Skip the impact driver part. Lol
To take off a belt - Walk it off. To remove a bolt - Walk it off. To simmer down (anger management) - Walk it off. To get rid of a hard on - Walk it off. To reduce pain - Walk it off! That's your answer most of the time, bro! You sound like my coach or Dad! - I had a new lawnmower tire, got a leak in it in 1 week. Took it to a shop to repair. But they said I needed a new tire (another one), because it was a sidewall leak and not "safe" to repair. I wish I had a recording of you saying, it's a lawnmower, not the space shuttle! Bet I don't go over 15mph - and it was a slow leak. So slow, I could leap off the lawnmower in slow motion, hit the ground, roll over, and make a sandwich, and the tire would still have some air in it and not be flat yet. Sounds like your next episode. How is an attempted sidewall repair unsafe??? Who's the dummy?
lol "oxygen and amphetamine" torch. Quick question: off road go kart with the same style of single lug rim...Is the heat/cool method going to ruin the bearings in the rim?
It WORKED, I knew to use an air hammer and heat but never thought of heat and water. You saved my wheel and now a subscribe. Must have watched a dozen other videos and my next move was to cut the wheel off.

"This ain't the space shuttle. It's a lawn mower." Hilarious and very true.
A-f***ing-men!!
Taryl, great video!! I used your method of removal for a wheel/rim that was on a lawn tractor for 30 years & never removed .Your method worked like a charm !!!! thanks for your idea . KEEP ON TRUCKIN.
This was seriously an amazing tip. I used it to remove a frozen wheel hub on my garden tractor that was basically welded on. Thanks. It worked awesome
Taryl , you are a ROCKSTAR !!!
With three exclamation marks .
Thank you! it worked for me on a craftsman rear tine tiller on the wheels. I sprayed it for weeks and couldn't get it off and your trick did it.
Oxygen /amphetamine torch, almost crapped myself. I call mine the big red wrench. Your videos are awesome.
i love the old Taryl videos!
around here I keep a set of sae and metric torches cause the rust is soooo bad
That air hammer trick got me out is a tight spot with the rear wheel on a Cub Cadet tractor. Thanks Taryl!
Super video thank you so much from across the pond in the UK
VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO!! (as ALWAYS).. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks taryl i learn a lot from you
Great video, I'm wondering if that much heat can damage the seal on the axle. Just asking!
Yes it can, You can wrap a wet rag in the seal area that will keep it somewhat cool. I've done that to protect the seal.
Taryl Fixes All did this trick on my own and though I was so smart.
I like your style man.A big fat like coming your way.
And yes it works. Use the three times in the last 4 days. And I was able to make it home for dinner.
.
I'm trying to remove a wheel off of the space shuttle. I'm screwed.
try a wing nut lol
Oxygen and Amphetamine torch! LMAO
I agree with you all the way.............
Great Method. I like because it works!
I got arrested trying to buy oxy's and amphetamines for a torch
Lol
Lol
Good suggestions. Not only are my wheels seized, but my brake actuator AND axle disengagement actuator (for pushing tractor) are as well.
Thanks Taryl, I have one right now that needs to come off. I was pretty sure you had the answer. I tried a heat gun but I don't think it got hot enough.
I'll get it off now !
Thanks
How do you keep from taking out the seal on some of these hydrostatic transmissions are very close to the rim.
Hey, if you were going to use a Rosebud Heating Torch Tip would you use a number 4?
Oxygen and AMPHETAMINE torch, now that answers all of my questions about these guys.
Love your comment, "This ain't no space shuttle..." hilarious...
@@bigoen If I remember right, one of the space shuttles blew up. Not enough cold water?
Great videos, will you burn any wheel seals
No space shuttle is right. Good one as usual.
Great job no-nonsense get the job done
Thanks Taryl! I like your attitude. It’s great!👍
Used the heat and cool shock method for years working on drilling rigs. We call a torch a Vector wrench.
doesn't it bend the metal (axle) ?
WOULD HAVE NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT ! THANKS ! WE LIVE ON A SMALL FARM AND BOY DOES STUFF GET STUCK !
LONIE DAVIS you live on a farm and don't know about using a torch? How small is the farm? 20'x20'?
In the auto business, they always tell us "Yer changing the brittleness of the metal using heat"!!!! I hate when they think we all don't know the GD use of the HOT WRENCH!!!!! I so want to change my 28 year profession to working on lawn equipment!!!! Nice vid Taryl!!!
+John Happel (Full Mast Hap) OH!!! I forgot, they want us to use that damn electric "Nut Buster"!!!! I believe it heats the metal the same way just w/o heat???? I say BS!!!! LOL!!!
people are stupid af they dont understand that without the use of a acetylene torch you cant do certain jobs.
It really requires two people to hold and pull it with a air hammer, small piece of pipe around bolt helps keep the punch in center of bolt also
excellent idea heat then cool Thumbs up
Thanks Terrell
Knock, Knock ......Who's there? NASA........We gotta rusted part that won't come off.
What about using a 50/50 mixture of acetone & ATF fluid?
Nathan Turner 50/50 using Marvel Mystery Oil is better.
straight atf works good
Is there anything you can't do Taryl? Love your vids
I spent 2 days heating and beating a wheel before I cut the wheel off and sliced open the sleeve with a grinder. I even tried drilling holes in it and using a puller. I guess it's time for me to upgrade my air supply/tools!
Good thing I have 2 sets of JD yellow wheels kicking around as spares for my mower.
Taryl, I'm going that fast!
BTW, the axle seal will never be the same!
I need one of them Taryl Jr buttons BRO!!
Are there different size wheels?
Daryl do think this method would work on ariens snowblower axle to wheel, there's a rass bushing in them, and there a real stinker cant get it moving at,you must know all about these, its the pro 26,a d went to take the wheel off a d the axle came rite out, could not get the axle to move out of the wheel at all.
Another Funny and informative video!
You were great, I have the same wheel problem on my MTD.
taryl is it safe to heat and cool the double drive pulleys on an engine of a lawn tractor
So a couple stuck bolts, heat em up real hot, then quench em, should be good to remove em then?
no matter how many times i hear it, when Taryl says "Oxygen and amphetamine" torch, I laugh a lung out !
This guy is a genius - not too late to put his hat in the ring for 2020 !!!
never seizes to amaze me 🤣
Great video taryl
I LOVE YOU TARYL IM 17 AND I WORK ON SMALL ENGINES AS WELL 😁😁😁😁
Thank you...Mr Dactyl.
Taryl,
Regarding old 5 hp Briggs horizontal snow blower/tiller engines:
Are the threads (that secure a drive pulley) in the center of the crankshaft left hand?
That "Amphetamine torch" is all jacked up! ......LOL !~D
Absolutely hilarious. Nice job
In Machinist terms, it’s called thermo shocking, which heat treats (hardens) the metal. And theirs your BBQ!
All good with the heat wrench.... however not everyone has a set of torches at home
You're like the rocket scientist of lawnmowers...
Good video sir .
Always was afraid to try that because of the seal on the axle my 185 hydro only has a washer not a long spacer on it.
Thank you I'm gonna try that
That's the perfect way to do it BUT, what if I don't have a set of torches or a air hammer ? I've been spraying some penetrating oil for 2 weeks now, "nuffin"...The only torch I have is MAP gas. Not enough to bring the rim to cherry red.
Heat wheel outside of axle, quench with water, Repeat.
Hilarious bru dude! Just curious though, who’s your dentist?
Great video!
I thought about the air tools but I can see u gotta have a torch
I wish I would have seen this video my lawn tractors rim was so rusted on I ended up cutting the rim off now I have to find a new rim.
1 problem the seal on transmission? I did this on an engine 1 time and burned out the oil seal. That was easy to replace but on some of these new transaxles you can't replace the seal.

OK👌!! THANKS!!
great video....
What about a deere lx176 or like with the key
Heat the key red hot, cool it down and drive it off.
always great, thank you ...
agreed! Thanks!!
I've used the same trick for bleeder screws on brake calipers. (I live in Michigan where they salt the roads so bleeders rust up quick.) +jhitt79 We got the same deal here in Newfoundland , Canada. Turn it cherry red and douse it with water. Gets 'em every time....
Always have a new Caliper on hand..............
Heating up the piston or caliper would destroy the components inside, would it not?
More times than not a propane torch provides enough heat and is a lot more convenient. If that doesn’t work then the blue tip is next.
bro!dude! LMAO taryl is a legend
Great video, EXCEPT I don't have an acetylene torch, I don't have an air chisel, I don't have a hose. Don't you have a technique for the average guy?
Look up Mapp - Pro torch. Should cost under $50 and it's pretty nice. Heats steel WAY hotter than propane and without the hassle of needing a separate oxy cylinder like the old mapp/oxy torches needed.
I love yu Taryl YU da MAN
Thanks great info !
Your air hammer is your friend, and never sneeze lol
I love when he yells at people who nit pick ! It ain’t the space shuttle it’s a lawn mower lol !
Awesome...
ALRIGHT NOW SLIPPERS !!
I had to sub, u are hillarious and smart as hell!
good ol' heat wrench works every time!
Cool.
Hell yeah, that fedemine torch bro
where can i get a bit like that for my air hammer? would like keep off the tool truck if possible lol
Good auto parts store, harbor freight, grind broken one to shape
O'reilly
Can i use propane to do this
Look for a Mapp-Pro torch. Should cost under $50
I got a question what if this don't work what next because i working on one now i have heat it up about three times and no good
lewis hawks Not sure what you're doing wrong but we've never had a rusty item that we couldn't remove with this method before. Gotta heat it up really well and quench it. Sometimes it might take a few tries
Taryl Fixes All you r right i got that wheel but i had to heat it up 6 time time on both sides
Very handy
So glad to see Taryl's eye problem has improved as of 2023 though his teeth are still wonky : )
This same trick works on hard boiled eggs. Take egg directly from boiled water to an ice bath and shell will peel off easy. Skip the impact driver part. Lol
Unfortunately I don't have a hole in the end of the shaft to put a bolt in
To take off a belt - Walk it off. To remove a bolt - Walk it off. To simmer down (anger management) - Walk it off. To get rid of a hard on - Walk it off. To reduce pain - Walk it off! That's your answer most of the time, bro! You sound like my coach or Dad!

There's a couple of better ways to get rid of a hard on than walk it off.
Usually, jerking the deck off cures that.
Joe Schwartz you shouldn't waste a hard on. No telling how many you have left.
Patch the tire on the inside and add a tube
lol "oxygen and amphetamine" torch. Quick question: off road go kart with the same style of single lug rim...Is the heat/cool method going to ruin the bearings in the rim?
not the bearings, but the seals should be replaced before re-assembly.
