2001 Acura Integra GSR Muffler Replacement -EricTheCarGuy

- This video features the muffler replacement on a 2001 Acura Integra. Admittedly, one of my favorite vehicles and I love when it comes into the shop. That said, it came in due to noise from the exhaust. I found that the muffler was in less than stellar shape, and decided to replace it. The rest of the exhaust was in good enough shape. I used an aftermarket part which is something I'm always cautious of when it comes to imports. The quality and fit is all over the map it seems and to be honest, this one was no exception. In fact, I could have cut about 2" off of this one to make it fit a little better.
This video also features tips on using a torch to remove rusty fasteners. There was a little excitement when the torch caught on fire, but we fixed it and moved on with the repair.
**Note that this is the first repair video featuring my new camera and editing software. I'm still learning the ropes, but I'm getting better with each new video I produce. So in case you were wondering why this video looked and sounded differently, you now know why. I hope you like the changes.
Thanks for watching.

Good to see an old school straight forward repair video, thanks Eric!
Not the most glamorous repair, but I think this one has some good repair tips in it. ua-cam.com/video/zYSAAyhwFmk/v-deo.html
Are performance aftermarket mufflers like HKS or FlowMaster worth the change? Besides the obvious noise difference that is.
*****
It really depends on the vehicle. If the engine is stock, you'll likely not notice much, change at all, if any. "Performance" mufflers are really just about sound. Yes, there are some that flow better than a stock muffler, but a stock engine really isn't going to care about better flow at the muffler. Even most catalytic converters made in the last decade or so pose very little restriction to exhaust flow. Often, the "biggest" gains can be picked up by straightening out exhaust flow; using mandrel bends and eliminating or reducing excessive clearance bends.
General rule of thumb: If your engine hasn't been to a machine shop to receive a performance build, the stock exhaust system is likely good enough. If you need to replace a failing muffler, and you want a different sound, then "performance" mufflers are a reasonable option. :-)
rhkips performance build, not quite yet. I have retuned the engine to give a better throttle response and some other minor tweaks that the shop did. My exhaust system for the most part is pretty straight already. Have been thinking of swapping out the muffler so I don't have to in the future.
There shouldn't be any drawbacks to it anyways though right?
The only real drawback is the "drone" a lot of performance mufflers tend to cause. It's this sort of constant, low-pitched him that you'll hear all the time inside the car. Some folks don't mind, some folks don't notice, and others find it to be one of the most annoying things in the world. If anyone tells you that your engine "needs backpressure," throw a cup of water in their face and get on with your day. I'd explain, but there are people out there far, far more intelligent and better educated than I that have already written extensive articles on the subject. :-)
EricTheCarGuy can you explain the purpose of the spring nut for the muffler.. what's the main function of spring nut verse standard. ty
This motorcyclist thanks you for torquing the tip on. My 92 accord muffler a huge cancerous hole on the bottom but I never replaced it because it was as quiet as the day I bought it.
Eric The Car Guy just said, "Vtec just kicked in yo." haha
Eric Brunhammer - Eric said that first after replacing the GS-R's exhaust manifold with a nice steel header.
From experience, I can tell you that when VTEC goes into high power mode, it's a little like four-barrel carb secondaries kicking in... FUN! :-D
old school Acura integra Awesome job Eric the car guy 😎🙏
Very good video complete with very good explanations. That's the way to go. Keep it up, Eric.
Nice to see you working on an ITR again.
Only started watching your videos for the old ITR guides. Been hooked since :)
Pretty easy job with the right tools. Video and audio quality is good, I dig it.
Very nice seeing you back to your single camera, lone gunman style. Keep it up!
Love your videos man keep them up!
Solid, Eric. Thanks for this, as soon as I have daylight after work, this is exactly what I'm doing on my 2005 CR-V/
Good morning Eric. Appreciate the video
I really miss the video style without a cameraman. that vtec (vvtlec) comment really made my night! Great job Eric!
crazy now you own that integra eric!!!
Really well filmed tutorial! Thank you a lot. : )
Pure joy to be your subscriber!
Yah first one to saw this video
Thanks Eric for good things you do
See, now I would actually use this video, whereas I'm never going to retrofit an AC system. Thanks for making videos for noobs.
Lol i love the enthusiasm when you said "yayyy vtec just kicked in yo"
I looôve the way u got that wheel out !!!
7:20 Yes it WILL matter because in 2 years you will buy it :o)
The Vtec comment made my day
Damn, my 94 GSR with 360K miles still has the original stock rear exhaust section and muffler on it, even the original stock chrome muffler tip! And no it's not rusted out! The only things I ever changed were to get rid of the stock resonator B-pipe due to lack of ground clearance (it always scraped parking garage ramps), and replaced the factory header a couple of times due to annoying rattles.
thanks Eric
MAP gas has worked fine for me on many bolts that need the heat treatment. I popped 2 exhaust bolts on my Buick Lacrosse with just map gas and a breaker bar.
Nice video 🙏
Good video! Those gsr rims are kind of hard to find. Worth a decent chunk of change even in rough shape.
Damn. Stock b18 motor.. So rare now haha. Good Video!
Wow, an Acura Integra that's not been riced out!
I have one unfrankensteined as well.. Very rare
+Don C or tuned
great job thanx
Thanks so much eric. I have been trying to figure out why my gasket wouldnt fit. The previous owner installed a different full exhaust and now I cant use a oem gasket. FML
You're getting old Eric 😔😞 stay in shape dude
It's always a good idea to put the old part next to the new part and compare them prior to installing them. You would have noticed the length difference before installation that way. Good video though.
That was hella rusty lol, that fire out the torch put some suspense hahaha
Smashing job eric :-)), wonder if stainless steel bolts would last any better.
I bought a Honda Del Sol and little did I know that it had a Rare Engine under the hood. A Vtec DOHC engine. I guess I found out when I needed a CV joint. BTW thanks for The info!!!!
As a way to make it easier in the future to change the nuts and bolts because of the rust, could I put anti-seize on them so it is easier to take off, or would it be just a waste of time?
Great videos! I was just wondering if you knew the size of the nuts that secure your front strut bar. Just picked one up without the hardware. Thanks in advance!
I'm going to give it a thumbs up just for saying vTEC just kicked in you! Bahbaa
I like your videos
Yo , V-Tec yo , I was thinking it and you said it Eric
I do almost all of my repairs myself, but exhaust is one thing I always pay someone else to do. Every time I've tried it, the exhaust is so rusty that it's basically welded together, and the bolts either snap off, or the heads are so rust-eaten that they round out.
What was the brand of that small jumper battery you showed in what you carry in your car and is it any good?
Great Video! What brand muffler & cat do you recommend for replacement? Both of them are needing replaced on my Integra.
Question about oxygen acetylene... I am looking to learn to weld, and, at the same time, it would be beneficial to have the torch for heat, or even cutting. But, in reality, this would be an addition to a hobby and not something I would use very often. So, do the oxygen and acetylene gases last forever, if not used? Do they need to be used by a certain amount of time? etc... Thanks. (I've heard acetylene is unstable and won't store)
New camera Eric? Video quality looks different.
Replacing exhaust parts is a real pain without the proper tools. My muffler had a pipe that was too long as well, but you can't always get what you want with old cars
The fact it still had a factory-style muffler is ASTONISHING!
I changed the muffler on the wife's 2000 CR-V recently. I found that the spring bolt nuts had been welded (not with rust) to the exhaust pipe flange. I guess whoever did the muffler last time did that. Is that normal practice?
It would have been good if Eric had given the old muffler a shake. The CR-V's old muffler wasn't peeling like an onion, but it sounded like a maraca when shaken.
Is that rattle gun a 3/8 or a half inch? looking at getting on to replace my 12v sp
Is it okay to put the bolts back on without the spring?
like all you video like always
Can someone tell me what the bars are called at the bottom of leaf springs that have a rubber snubber towards the front and are mounted to the U- bolts????? I can't remember.
DEEZZ NUTTSSS!! (02:13) HAHAHAHA!
For me propane/butane torch helps alot!
I did a 2000 Honda CR-V muffler recently, and a propane torch helped with the spring bolts.
I have a 1995 Acura Integra and I want to get a used engine from the junk yard . They told me only 94 and 95 are interchangeable . My Question is, are new model Integra engines interchangeable if I included the transmission or what's the deal with only those 2 years being interchangeable? Cause I can buy different motor mounts if that's the issue . Does anyone have advice ?
top notch.
Millions of peaches peaches for me
2:13 "heat up deez nuts and blast away" 💀
ahahahahaha thought the same
0:14, I lol'ed so hard :P
"Yaaay, VTEC just kicked in, yo!"
Dunno if that is from MCM, where I heard it first, or just a common Honda "enthusiast" saying?
"VTEC JUST KICKED IN, YO!" is an old, old, old Honda saying, said by both enthusiasts as well as detractors and trolls who think people that like small displacement Honda motors are dorks.
MCM FTW!
nice
where did you get this muffler how much do you remember paying. i am thinking about buying a ebay cheap cat back system. i want the flanges, i was thinking about buying the catback and cutting the fart can off and welding on a regular muffler. would it be better to weld on the muffler and then clamp over it or just weld. a local shop installed new exhaust for me from cat all the way back 3 years ago and it has fallen off since. i just want a exhaust i know will last a bit longer is why i am getting new cat with flanges and cheap cat back that has flanges, but i want a regualr muffler not that loud fart can what should i do? thank you
Those damn bolts are NEVER fun. I usually just go ahead and cut them off and be done with it, using new hardware all around. Wrestling with those f'ers is NOT worth it. You've got the heat though, that went well. I never had that though or impact. With a wrench and sockets... not happening.
Great video!
Chooped! I cut them too :p
I prefer using the Sawzall wrench and reuse the springs and replace the fasteners with 304/316 stainless steel installed with a minimal amount of anti-seize on the nut. Technician 1, corrosion 0.
patw52pb1
hah yeah anytime ive done exhaust work its stainless fasteners all around.
*****
Unless you plan on dropping the entire exhaust. Getting a hacksaw in there is often impossible.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was hoping that was a Honda OEM GSR muffler You were installing, the muffler tip is oem though..
Could you make a tutorial video on a Big Red Wrenches? I'm thinking about getting one, but afraid of gas-fire-explosion things...
Eric, you rock, but would you mind making your logo in the bottom right maybe half as large and maybe turn down the opacity a bit? I want to see everything. :)
"Heat up deez nuts and blast away" lmao love the integra
Fun, fun, fun...
For some reason many Hondas have problems with rotting exhaust systems. I had a Vigor in Texas that had the B pipe and muffler rot from the inside out at only 120K miles. Highest mile car I ever had was an SC300 and the stock Toyota exhaust never needed any repair up to 310K miles. I'm now chasing another exhaust leak in the Vigor. Honda quit supplying the A pipe and the exhaust manifold is $700+. Maybe I can have a welder patch it to stay OEM instead of putting Chinese parts on the car with the A pipe.
I don't even mess with the old stuff. I always replace the hardware so I just cut the bolts off.
Eric just wanted the tip!
I guess im that guy, have you gotten a new camera? The quality looks a little better
Coming soon to youtube, measuring and cutting an exhaust pipe for proper tip fit on 2001 Acura Integra GSR
Hey Eric, what do you do when your brakes are grabbing a bit without any pedal input? It's on all four corners.
Grabbing like dragging slightly? the pads might be tight in their retainers/slides. Do the pads have brake-lube? Are the pistons fully retracting? Any leaks in brake lines? All those things can cause brake drag. Stay gold.
thanks mate, I'm going to take a look at these things.
Eric shoulda trimmed the end off alittle to make it look even and that gsr is clean well exept for the rust underneath haha
The reason that exhaust is longer than usual is because it's made for an Integra LS.. the LS muffler is longer than the GSRs ... and the aftemarket industry only makes that muffler for the ls .. you have to go to Honda to get the shorter belly muffler.. just installed my oem one .
That bosal replacement muffler will rust so fast. Nothing beats OEM Honda parts that last 15+years. Nice video, but getting the right parts is key. It's a GS-R it deserves it, that long tip looks bad. Can you ask the customer if they would sell this car to me PLEASE?
Corolla 2002 . my brake fluid is leaking but I can't find it, I have to put in new fluid every week. tell me what to do
Find the leak and fix it? If you haven't found the leak, then you haven't looked at the whole system; simple as that. Start at the master cylinder and follow each brake line down all the way to each caliper/wheel cylinder, then inspect each caliper and wheel cylinder. If there are no leaks anywhere in the lines or the calipers/wheel cylinders, then check the ABS unit. If no leaks there, unbolt the master cylinder from the brake booster, slide it forward, and check the back of it to see if the primary seal is leaking into the booster. If you still can't find the leak, submit your car to CERN, because you have magical interdimensional brake fluid.
If you got brake drums(rear) you shuld take off the rotor and check the the brake cylinder :)
Check inside the brake vacuum booster
JUDGERAMBO I second the vacuum booster. The fluid can actually leak into them and you won't see a leak, so if there's no visible wetness at any of the wheels and the lines all look ok the booster is a good place to check.
My exhaust was SO rusty when I went in to replace it (with all stainless parts, forget having to mess with that again) all I had to do was hit it with a 16oz hammer and it literally fell into rusty chunks. It was actually super easy to remove, and I'm amazed it didn't fall off of it's own volition sooner.
hey man i have a sport bike and recently changed my chain and rear sprocket, i really wanted to change the front but could not get the nut off for the life of me, i even used my air impact wrench and it would not budge do you think it would come off if i heated it up with a torch?
left-hand threads.
Yeah it think its left treadts...
Maybe a lock washer, i mean thats noticable but you never know either. Trying inspecting the nut to see if there is a tab bent over a flatspot
Have you called your local dealer or bike shop? Stay gold.
You can try a propane torch, you may have to hold it there for a minute or two tho to get it hot enough
Did you end up cutting down the tail pipe a bit? VTEC jokes aside, that sticking out looks stupid.
You cut it Down! It's going to Cut Shins/knees?
This car he bought to him self
is this the engineering explained guy's old car?
VTEC KICKED IN!!! LMFAO
So weird seeing a stock exhaust and air box haha
teggy
Hi Eric i have a question Can i use kemical (i don't Know how it's speld) metal ? Kemical metal
To stop leakings.
Like JB Weld?
***** not epoxy search for chemical metal on google
under 301 club yay!
MORE JDM WORK !!!!!!!!
My mechanic said that oxy/propane was great for cutting.
Lol that intro tho
Hi Eric! Nice video. Do you know if there are auto-parts stores that rent torches for a job like this? Don't take this the wrong way, but why is it you never do any rust removal on mating surfaces? I'm sure speed has something to do with it for a mechanic like you, but wouldn't it benefit the owner in the long run? Rust is a nasty virus, especially on parts that go through numerous heat cycles (like exhausts).
if home depot, lowes, o'reilly, or auto zone doesn't have it. no one probably does to rent lol
The time, energy, tool wear, rust dust and flakes in your eyes, ears, nose and mouth.....plus all the other mess and cleanup on an exhaust job like that is not worth rust-fighting. Those exhausts rust no matter what. Stay gold
VTec just kicked in yo. Rofl
What are those type of exhaust gaskets? What are they called?
Donut gasket
***** bubbadog127 Thanks guys. Need to be prepared when I walk into the auto parts place. :)
Andrew Miguelez not all cars use a donut gasket. there's a lot of different kinds.
David G
Yep, that's why I asked.
just making sure you don't go in buying a donut gasket when your car takes something else..
Guys I really need help with my car. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks. I will link to the forum where I posted my problem. honda-tech.com/honda-civic-2001-2005-78/civic-blowing-cold-air-when-heater-turned-3230873/
i must be extremely lucky when it comes to exhaust bits, every spring bolt on an exhaust iv ever dealt with came off with a bit of wd40. and this is on a 24 year old car.
I've owned a few integras and man if I saw that I would just replace the entire exhaust with aftermarket.. less work.
I cannot stand those dad-gum exhaust fasteners. Are those exhaust tips factory? Cuz the last person who came to my shop and wanted me to install exhaust tips got chased out with a bullwhip. Stay gold.
Stay gold ponyboy....
Johnny?
That Integra looks in very good condition, i bet the owner wants to say it that way. Usually your repair are quite good but this was was really cheaply done, first of all you should clean/polish the chrome end pile while you had it outside, you should take out the sticker and cut the pipe if it was not matching i don't think this would made the job much more expensive and you would just deliver good service to the customer and of course charge for it.
If somebody would hand me my car in this shape i would not be happy, until that car would be complete crap and i would just care about the price but this Integra is not that case.
spyda2002
Once they burn away they are fine, I've left them on with many different exhaust pipes and systems without an issue, just a little smoke until it is burned away.
jr540123 but until then it looks crap...
*****
Its in a hard to notice spot honestly. I doubt it would matter anyways since this car looks more like a daily driver that just works and is paid for.
No fart can? Thank God!!
