What happened at the bridge of tears? This place can be found in Co. Donegal. Check the map detail in the video as to its location.
The Bridge of tears was just a bridge in the famine times. It later became known as the bridge of tears to remind those of what had happened here.
When mass emigration came to Ireland during the famine years those in in the west of Ireland would have to go through this bridge to head to Derry to take passage to the USA, Scotland, England or where ever they wanted to go.
The bridge of tears is a set in a very scenic part of Ireland however a sad reminder of the many people that passed this place still exists.
There is a plaque on the site which is mentioned in the video and its translation in English.
I really wanted to visit this place as I have keen interest in history. Some may know if this place and others may not.
You could imagine the amount of people and families that would end up here. All saying there goodbyes and were likely to not see each other again due to the cost of travel during this period.
I highly recommend a visit to this place not only to admire its scenic beauty but to also learn from history. What happened in Ireland was a tragedy, one that must never be experienced again by any culture or people on this planet.
We must look at the past but not live in it. Learn from our mistakes and ensure history is not repeated.
