Johnny is such an amazing guitarist yet seems incredibly humble to be so darn good! I could listen to him play all day everyday. What a true gentleman. I am going to work on the picking exercises he demonstrated. Thanks for having Johnny on!
I met Johnny at a Dallas guitar show and he was as friendly and acted like we’d known each other for years! He was so humble and down to earth.......compared to some of the other guitarists who were there who acted so annoyed that I would even approach them! Johnny at the jam smoked every other guitarist there and with a shit eatin’ grin as he did it! 😉🎸
That last lick at 9:40 had me rolling also Steve. Johnny is as good as any player I’ve heard and a beautiful human to go with it. Amazing guys, amazing.
Great tips. Great to see the guy on right speaking for normal people. Asking all the relevant questions that viewers would be thinking of. Hiland explains things so well as well.
`I remember going into Robert's Western World (on Broadway, Nashville) back in the early 2000's and seeing Johnny with the Don Kelly Band.....his technical prowess was jaw-dropping!!!!!
Great vid, thanks! fyi - an easy *non callous-tearing* 2nd fret/G string/whole tone bend is a BREEZE with my Peters G/B bender (made in Muncie, IN). It bends the G a whole tone and the B a 1/2 tone...lovely steel guitar-y sounds for old guys with arthritis. :)
Paul Hamrick ...Johnny is a legitimate MASTER! anyone with at least half a brain rattling around in their head that admires guitar music, regardless of genre, can easily see that. So how is he UNDERRATED? The fact that you've never heard of him or you haven't seen his name mentioned in some kind of pop-up top ten list? Why do I see people using that term all the time now? JUST STOP IT!
When he wants to he can do it all. When he was younger he played some fusion and even metal shredding, which he is also a master of, but it seems in recent years he just plays what he loves and aims to be the world's best chicken picker.
Johnny is a American treasure! Fantastic player and great teacher. I've been playing 40+ years and have learned a lot from everyone, but Johnny's licks are the ones people ask me how "how did you do that? God bless.
Met him after a show @ Robert’s back in 99’.Super nice guy.I asked if he gave lessons and how much $. He said” just come over and bring your rig and we’ll go from there”. I moved back to Tx. before I got to work with him.Sure wish I’d taken advantage of that kind offer. I was extremely fortunate because Red was in town as well.Another MONSTER player and Super Nice guy!
Thanks Johnny!! These are fantastic exercises that I could really us now. 9 months of 1-2 hours a day and I am starting to hear the results! Got my acrylics on so I am using this as my go to exercises! Cannot wait for any new lessons you are coming out with. You are an impressive teacher and your willingness to show us is humble as can be. God bless ya Brother and all the best from Christopher in Costa Rica
Those muted ghost notes are what really give it that percussive feel, imo. C-pikin has a real percussive element to it and those muted ghosties are a huge part of that.
Need to save this video. I had no idea about this guy. As a metal head who often prefers high gain shredding, this guy provides that blue grass that I do have a guilty pleasure for but holy moly is this dude talented. Dude probably plays some of the smoothest whiskey I've ever heard.
You almost can't even have any friends growing up in order to play an instrument that good. I mean seriously. I spent years of my teenage time in my parents basement in order to become a decent drummer while everyone else was doing normal teenage stuff. In order to achieve Johnny's level of mastery, how could he have ever even gone outside as a kid right? Just...... WOW!
Don, Johnny does offer skype lessons. If you're interested just reach out to him at his website. He's happy to teach and does a great job at it. Keep Learning. - Steve
Inside secret on string bending. Albert Lee used .08 gauge strings. .08 gauge strings I have found are THE STRINGS for my 3 Telecasters for playing country music. I bought a set of Ernie Ball Extra Slinky and they are just that. Extra slinky.
The fact that at about the 5.55 minute mark he asked Johnny to put the licks into a musical context .. this is what normally baffles us average Joe Blows ... sweet 🙏
Gregory, working on it. We've got several lessons with Johnny on our UA-cam channel to check out. Also, check out our artist playlist here... ua-cam.com/play/PLFuR2K1ik5F4rlswlv5eBRm4K3K7lsG55.html
Johnny is just incredible. I would love to play like him. This is coming from someone who grew up playing strictly Heavy Metal guitar from the 80's. Now I've grown to appreciate other professional guitarists and their styles. By the way, what Brand and string gauges is Johnny using? Great video. Thanks.
Me too. Now I listen to Johnny Hiland, Brad Paisley, Frank Vignola, Guthrie Govan, Jimmy & Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel, Joscho Stephan, John5, Paul Gilbert's newer style of playing, Stephane Wrembel, throw in some Michael Romeo & Yngwie for good measure...
You mentioned the pick & finger have the same tone @ mark 1:26. My finger has a dull tone. I've been practicing a little hybrid picking for a couple of years now and I've always been aware of it but, I can't get the same tone as the pick. Do you have any tips to achieve that tone?thx

I'm not sure Johnny Hiland knows how good he really is! Just amazing.
Of course he knows
Absolutely
He def does know
he knows, he just is a good person who is humble.
He knows so well that he doesn't need the ego. Seems like a genuine guy anyways.
Johnny is such an amazing guitarist yet seems incredibly humble to be so darn good! I could listen to him play all day everyday. What a true gentleman. I am going to work on the picking exercises he demonstrated. Thanks for having Johnny on!
Great. Learn all you can! - Steve
The thing with Johnny is, he makes every note count, every one clear. A true master
What an amazing humble player Johnny is. One of a kind
Yes, he's a true legend.
I met Johnny at a Dallas guitar show and he was as friendly and acted like we’d known each other for years! Ha. That's awesome. Was it a country thing or just general guitar?
His playing is straight up mind blowing. There are guitar players then there is Johnny.

This guy can play. I could watch him all day.
I'm a metal head but I love those country guitar sounds. Right on guys.
If he was using distortion look out😮
Love you, Johnny! You are a special man. Honored to share a planet with you!
As we all are! - Steve
`I remember going into Robert's Western World (on Broadway, Nashville) back in the early 2000's and seeing Johnny with the Don Kelly Band.....his technical prowess was jaw-dropping!!!!!
Does anyone care to argue that Mr Johnny Hiland is NOT a legend?
Awesome video - many thanks!
He's incredible! - Steve
Those exercises are gold for cleaning and tightening up your playing
Great vid, thanks! fyi - an easy *non callous-tearing* 2nd fret/G string/whole tone bend is a BREEZE with my Peters G/B bender (made in Muncie, IN). It bends the G a whole tone and the B a 1/2 tone...lovely steel guitar-y sounds for old guys with arthritis. :)
Pure mastery and such a humble nice person too.
As a teacher, this is one of the greatest country lessons ever.
Wonderful! Learn all you can. - Steve
Johnny is awesome! Thanks again Guitar Gathering for having Johhny on your show. I never get tired of hearing him play.
Me either!- Steve
These are exercises, and they blow me away. So talented.
Johnny seems like the coolest dude ever. What a gem
Yes, he's as real off camera as on. Great player and friend. - Steve
It's wonderful to hear Johnny's playing, and it's comforting to know that he did a lot of practicing to become such a master guitarist.
Nobody gets good at anything without practice. It takes literally 10,000 hours.
Johnny seems like such a decent kind person.
All that talent, and such a sweet, agreeable guy.
Yes, exactly. -Steve
He is absolutely incredible.
Agreed!
Stumbled upon Johnny and he's amazing!!
Johnny is the most underrated player today! I don't even like country that much but I can't stop listening to him
all country players are underrated
Paul Hamrick ...Johnny is a legitimate MASTER! anyone with at least half a brain rattling around in their head that admires guitar music, regardless of genre, can easily see that. most country players suck. hiland does not tho.
When he wants to he can do it all. When he was younger he played some fusion and even metal shredding, which he is also a master of, but it seems in recent years he just plays what he loves and aims to be the world's best chicken picker.

Johnny is one amazing guy! His knowledge of music and playing skill is equally amazing!

Those muted ghost notes are what really give it that percussive feel, imo. C-pikin has a real percussive element to it and those muted ghosties are a huge part of that.
Yes, and Johnny is a master at them. They are pretty tricky to do.
Need to save this video. I had no idea about this guy.
As a metal head who often prefers high gain shredding, this guy provides that blue grass that I do have a guilty pleasure for but holy moly is this dude talented.
Dude probably plays some of the smoothest whiskey I've ever heard.
There is nothing blue grass about him.
This guy is amazing.
