    Even if you're not blind and not clicking, if you close your eyes and listen CAREFULLY you'll notice that the air sounds different when you're close to things than when you're farther away.

    This is probably stating the obvious but I'd think this could be enhanced greatly with earpieces and an electronic ping -- also maybe could be taken out of the human auditory range -- might even work better that way, per bats. I'd think higher frequency would have finer resolution, which could then be reinterpreted via the earpieces into a well-articulated picture.

    • @sign543
      @sign543 5 років тому +1

      konchog3 If he’s been blind since birth, it won’t produce any “picture” at all...he would perceive it in some other way than what we do when we picture things in our head. people blind since birth dream in smells and sound and feeling. They have no idea what vision is even like. Trying to get blind people to understand vision is virtually impossible. He can *sense* distance...but he can’t picture anything. The method you’re describing is a great idea. One boy who did this, was able to “see” almost as good as someone with sight. His skill at echolocation was honed naturally. He rode a bicycle, played basketball, etc. Seems impossible, but he did it.

    I have been blind since birth. I also echo-locate. Under no circumstances do I make a noise, unless it's my cane sweeping from side to side. I've learned to sense the air bouncing off buildings, vans, cars, or walls, as well as bus shelters, etc. I hear it with my ears. I can tell whether the object is solid or not. I do not need the aid of a click of the tongue. I think this way should be taught, rather than the click of the tongue method. It may be perceived as anti-social in the wider society, and viewed by sighted piers as strange.

      +Offtrailed Dino There's loads, the traditional 5 are just the obvious ones:
      Proprioception - you can sense your body's position without moving or looking.
      Heat (don't have to touch, we can detect infrared through our skin)
      Balance (arguably a specialist sense of touch)
      Rotational inertia (arguably as above)
      Acceleration (you can sense going into freefall without using any other standard sense)
      etc etc...

      The boy is BLIND, for God's sake, and you're worried about being a little annoyed by some clicking sounds? Get over yourself.
