Before I ask, I will start by saying the guy is incredible and should be far better known!! That is a MAJOR ability that should be far more commonly taught!! I don't get what the expert was curious about with what he asked, I mean it's obvious it works by a certain volume of returning sound taking near enough the form of what it reflects from. That's been known without asking for ages. I would be more curious about how he actually picks up on it and feels when he gets the return wave and what technique he uses to actually do it. Because it's not like us just clicking our tongues or cheeks, he must really be pushing some heavy and focused sound out, especially with all the noise pollution in our surroundings.
Granted noise is far greater in water, but its still an equivalent problem for mammals that are born to actually use the technique in their surroundings so I imagine it must be the same for him.

An interesting experiment would be to have this guy spend a lot of time with dolphins and whales and have him try to communicate with them.

I just wonder how he perceives the "shape" of sound. Like, sound does take a shape, but how does he differentiate it?
Yes it does, Sound is a type of air currents and can be absorbed by objects which gives it the shape. Hasn't the double slit experiment taught you anything?
If sound did not take shape and the waves stayed the same when hitting an object, then there will be no point in sound insulation such as foam or wood.

here is what i thought was interesting to think about. I cant find this in google though.
What if someone using echolocation listens to an audio clip of someone speaking. Will they be able to tell what the room looks like and what kind of items are in the room in which the audio clip was recorded?
Probably not. The blind man would have to know the exact direction of the person clicking and direction of the camera. Also they would need to have a 360° hearing system to properly hear the direction themselves
that makes sense. But what if It is a binaural recording? With a 3 dio mic?
+Akoli Cruz That would be an interesting experiment:) There is a video about this guy in which he explains that echolocation is something anyone could learn. Try it for yourself. Your clicks will sound way harder when there is an object in it's path.
Research "Sound Reflection" the source of the sound doesn't matter the object that the sound passes by will either hit and bounce back or pass by and not bounce back.
if a Bat apparently a lower form of Life can utilize Echolocation why wouldn't it be possible for humans to develop Echolocation.
the reason people think its impossible is cause they think its basically like creating a light-bright in your mind.. no its more like using a lead weight to check the depth of a seabed if you'll excuse the crude comparison
and as time goes on you will like the guy says become increasingly more adept at processing and applying that information like how anyone trains for anything be it baseball, running, archery, paperwork.. the list goes on forever

most humans have trouble seeing in deep sea because of the pitch black darkness. Imagine if they designed a diving suit for a man like this who could see even in the depths.
There are so many things down there that humanity has yet to observe, because we are too good at seeing with our eyes.
Your clicks won't bounce off of anything but the suit keeping the water out of your lungs. Can't locate anything in a suit, he needs the air as a medium of transportation for his clicks. Doubt it would work underwater until he grows gills and lives down there a while.

@@InspectahPatio Yeah no but flashlights are not very effective when it comes to observation of a larger environment. You only get spot illumination which means you don't get as clear of a picture like you do with ambient lighting like with sunlight. In general sea animals use alternate means of vision, as visible light as we know it is not very effective deep underwater. Ships already do this, because it is so much more effective in deep water, and while the average person's brain structure is setup to process visible light, they have found that blind people who use echolocation have reused the structures in place that people usually use to process visible light, to process echolocation information. Basically, their brains would be able to 'understand' these signals with the same speed and neural connections that regular people understand light. Their input of information would provide higher fidelity to suit this kind of environment if the suits were able to offer some attachment to process echolocation information, than people who use visible light to 'see'.
"Why should we use echolocation when we have flashlights" is like saying "Why did we invent electric saws when we have axes"
@@loe9504 Thanks for the serious reply! I was admittedly being facetious before but it really is fascinating. Originally I was thinking about the unmanned submarines that do a pretty good job at illuminating things but there definitely could be practical applications for echolocation, maybe in cave diving when the silt gets stirred up and the light cannot penetrate anything? But then I wonder how well the sound would travel in silty water? Either way, I'm all for new technology to augment the way we live!

Also, Hell yes, imagine exploring deep sea caves and being able to know where there would be crevices that open up to large open structures, discovering all these small sea critters wriggling around.
Cave diving is extremely dangerous but it's so fascinating since it's one of the parts of the earth we have explored the least

This is also how sight works. We see things because light waves bounces off from things. Some of that bounced light reaches to our eyes and we'll be able to detect that something is there.

You don't need the clicks. You can do it with diffraction of ambient noise alone, as well as with other acoustic effects on background noise that come from the presence of objects in the visual field. I can do that.
That's called passive sonar what the man in the video is doing is a type of active sonar, where he sends out a sound waves to receive them back instead of just waiting to recieve sonar waves

Im sceptic about this...unless its been proved by scientific standards, it may as well be fake, the guy may be partially blind and want some attention.
+Jax Nean Wow, Jax. He was my student in 2004 and I personally saw his eyes are made of glass and he effectively uses echolocation. Though small objects like his cane or pits on roads can not be defined with tongue clicking.
