You may or may not have to do the bleeding procedure (15 minutes each) multiple times to _really_ make sure all the air is out of the system. I had an incident where a coolant hose popped off on me while out driving. There was evaporated mist everywhere, and all my coolant came pouring out from underneath and I was left stranded. Luckily this was in a parking lot, so I immediately parked my car before the engine rose to dangerous temperatures and I shut it off. My uncle came to pick me up and we shopped for distilled water at a nearby convenience store. We were able to pop the hose back on, fill the cooling system with distilled water, and do a quick bleeding procedure before I carefully drove the car back home. Now I have oem bmw coolant in it again, mixed 50/50 with distilled water per instructions, but I ALWAYS do 2 or 3 bleeding procedures so I am SURE there's no more bubbles popping. Haven't had a coolant pipe pop-off on me since.
Just checked the BMW documentation and it says : "Bleed cooling system! WARNING: NOTE: Do not open the coolant expansion tank cap during the bleeding procedure. Switch on the lowbeam headlights to perform the bleeding procedure. If the lowbeam headlights are not switched on, the ignition (Terminal 15) will switch off automatically after a certain period of time and interrupt the bleeding procedure. 1. Driving experience switch must not be set to ECO PRO! 6. Press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds to floor. Engine must not be started. 7. The bleeding procedure was started by pressing the accelerator pedal and takes approx. 12 min. (the electrical coolant pump was activated and switches off automatically after approx. 12 min). 8. Then adjust fluid level in the coolant expansion tank to maximum. 9. Check the coolant system for LEAKS. 10. If the ventilation has to be performed again, deactivate DME completely (remove ignition key for approx. 3 minutes). Then repeat from point 3. Close coolant expansion tank." I'm still not sure if a bleeder valve needs to be opened under the car or if the coolant needs to be filled before the bleed. The instructions say to turn on the low beams so I would connect the battery to a charger just to be sure...
This. Important the lowbeams are on. My process was getting interrupted without me realizing and after trying with them on seeing this comment it actually finished and fixed the issue I was having with passenger side heating.
So for those of us that have an G30 N63 2018+ hit your start button 3 times to put it into diagnostic mode then follow the above steps. Watched a crap ton of videos on older models and couldn’t get it to work. Tried it in diagnostic mode and it worked.
To not be depended on the battery so much, you can just use the seat belt, it will make sure the car will not turn off. It's what we do when we install, for example, a tune .
Yes. You can do that as well. The N2X and N5X family of engines are not as prone to airlocks and the system is considered self bleeding as the expansion tank is the highest point in the system. It is ultimately easiest to run the electronic self bleeding procedure since the engine is off and it gives you the opportunity to identify possible leaks or connection problems from service work.
Yes to get it off the bleeding mode when you start the car again just change the temperature from 84 to your preferred temperature. Sometimes it stays longer than the usual 15 minutes

Thanks!! You should make some N51 specific maintenance or mod videos! Well, that's my request! I know it's basically the N52, but I'd like to know more about the specific differences!
Good information. Do you have the instruction to bleed air out of the 2005 E60 M54 engine ? My car does not have electric water pump, it is belt driven.
Similar process. Heater settings on max. Fan speed low. Leave the expansion tank open. That is supposed to be enough but never worked for me. I would eventually start the engine once I was sure there was enough coolant in the system. With the pump running the air comes out quickly. Top up as needed.
What if you don't hear the electric water pump come on during the first 20 sec of having the gas peddle pressed? I verified that my battery was fully charged before trying the procedure? For context, I have a 2007 Z4 3.0si.

Hi PG, as long as it is equipped with an electric water pump, the idea should be the same. Some models require you to turn on your low beams before you initiate the pump.

What happens if you dont do this procedure after a ofhg? The pump goes in some sort of safe mode or something? Could you experience loss of power because of that?
Hi Catalin, what can potentially happen is an air bubble in the system. Depending on where it gets trapped, it can cause weird fluctuations in temperature throughout your system.

Yes, remove bleed screws and fill expansion tank with coolant until no air bubbles, just coolant comes out of bleed screw holes. Replace bleed screws. Ensure expansion tank is brim full and replace cap. Then you can start this procedure. Air from the system will get trapped in the expansion tank so the coolant level should have dropped when the procedure is finished. Yes, but you also risk burning out the electric water pump by running it dry. Alternatively, you could flush the entire system like this, but it would take a long fucking time lol.
@Poverty.404 that's what I thought, but I've never been afraid of asking the crazy questions. Actually DOING the stupid crap that pops into my head is a completely different story 🤣
If you don’t bleed it, the engine or cooling system could have air trapped, giving you a hot spot that can damage the engine. Sounds absolutely necessary.

Ensure that both cooling circuits are filled before starting the automatic bleeding procedure. The bleeding procedure is automatically started simultaneously for both cooling circuits. So when we use the air release screw on the expansion tank (the little black plastic screw) to bleed the air out of the system? Should I leave it loose during the whole 8 minutes duration when the electric pump runs?
I have a pattern goggling sound coming from the AC vent especially with the heater setting while driving. It comes in a 2 sec pattern. I just replaced the thermostat and do the bleeding procedure once, do I need to do it again to resolve?
Hello, if it sounds like you have air bubbles making their way through your heater core, we would highly recommend bleeding the system again and topping off the reservoir as needed.
Oh man! I really need help here 🙏 I have a 2006 BMW 330i and I ran the process and worked the first time. I topped it off, turned on the car and it overheated. I tried to run the process again and I couldn't get it to bleed anymore. I checked all fuses under the hood as well and all are good. I can't figure out why it won't run anymore. I'm stumped 🤔
I tried to activate the procedure but for some reason nothing happens. It's a 2016 320i with B48 engine. Will I be OK to just fill up the system, keep the reservoir cap open and start the engine and let it idle until it's warmed up obviously making sure that the coolant tank has coolant in it all the time?
If you didn't already, you may need to ensure your battery is fully charged, and on a tender, for it to allow the procedure to active. You may be able to bleed it by letting it get up to temp and allowing the thermostat to open, otherwise, that will be causing an air bubble until it opens.
Is this done hot or cold? Do I keep the cap screwed in or open? My upper radiator hose collapse in the morning, so there is negative vacuum, any advice?

Idk about BMW but I work on other cars and that usually happens when the fan control module located on the fan goes bad, ecu fail safes by blowing max all the time. Then again you don’t have any of the common codes for a failed water pump?
Thanks for your reply. Yes I changed the temperature sensor and thermostat I don't have any water pump or fan error code. I don't know what to do next before I change the water pump which is costly. Man i have the same problem! Did u finally fixed it?
@@jaraujo9881 nope it never worked but my cooling system is all good
I canceled the hitting system in my z4 2006 😅 is it possible to do it
Would this be the same bleeding procedure for a 330i B48 2.0L engine?
yes the same
Thats great i might buy one..
Kind of an oddball question, but could you use this method to drain the cooling system by detaching the return hose & directing the flow to a bucket?
Yes, but you also risk burning out the electric water pump by running it dry. Alternatively, you could flush the entire system like this, but it would take a long fucking time lol.
@Poverty.404 that's what I thought, but I've never been afraid of asking the crazy questions. Actually DOING the stupid crap that pops into my head is a completely different story 🤣
How do you do it on N63
What’s the benefits of bleeding the system?
If you don’t bleed it, the engine or cooling system could have air trapped, giving you a hot spot that can damage the engine. Sounds absolutely necessary.
Should cap of expansion tank be on or off during the process?
It should be on. Close it fully, that's what bmw says
Same for S63 engines?
car . I still have the car asking for coolant after it’s hot. When I remove the cap halfway I hear a lot of air coming out. Is that normal? I did change a hose and he replaced another piece under the manifold to remove the part. Any ideas?
I didn't know they had an electronic wp until yesterday.
Does this work on N47 engine?
I changed my water heater control valve and topped it off with coolant but did not do this and now my ac when on auto does not blow out cold air properly its build top then is like it switched to low with out me doing anything should I bleed it?
Can you please help... My car BMW 2014 X3 F25 the Electric Water Pump Bleeding was working fine twice. Then, it stop after I used the Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealer. The Engine getting hot. So, I changed the Thermostat and clean out the Reservoir Tank. Same issue. Should I change the Water Pump? Is there fuse that I should check?
I got 3 Codes:
1) CD9010

2) 1A2004

3) 1A2002

Please help :) Thank you & God Bless
Does this apply on manual transmission as well???
How about if it doesn't go onto bleeding mode?
I tried 5 times on my 528i and couldn't bleed the system
Hi Hector, you want to ensure the vehicle has a sufficiently charged battery, if possible you may want to hook it up to a charger. Ensure the door remains open and try it again.
@@fcpeuro Thanks for the response
I will make sure battery is fully charged and try again .
@@fcpeuro Oh.... the door needs to be left open? That might explain why the process seemed to stop once I got out of the car...and closed the door. Would you need to bleed the system after changing oil cooler gasket, I assume so?
Do you have a video on bleeding a N63 engine / turbo intercooler side in particular. I Thank you for this video 👍
Not currently Daniel, but we do have a list going for the N63!
@@fcpeuroany updates on this?
Venting cooling system: Note:
Do not leave the coolant expansion tank sealing cap open during the bleeding procedure.
Ensure that both cooling circuits are filled before starting the automatic bleeding procedure. The bleeding procedure is automatically started simultaneously for both cooling circuits. If the bleeding processes is started while one of the cooling circuit is empty, there is a risk of damage to the coolant pump from running it dry.
Switch on the low-beam headlights to perform the bleeding procedure. If the low-beam headlights are not switched on, the ignition (Terminal 15) will switch off automatically after a certain period of time and interrupt the bleeding procedure.
1. Top coolant up to the upper edge of the expansion tank. Coolant level may not drop further! No drop in coolant for approx. 1 minute.
2. Connect battery charger.
3. Switch the ignition on.
4. Set heating to maximum temperature. Press Automatic button. Then set the blower to the lowest speed.
5. FES (driving experience switch) must not be in ECO PRO!
6. Press accelerator pedal for 15 seconds to floor. Engine must not be started.
7. The venting procedure is started when the accelerator pedal is pressed and takes approx. 12 minutes.
8. Refill expansion tank up to top edge immediately after drawing off until empty.
9. Adjust expansion tank to maximum level at end of bleeding procedure.
10. Check cooling system for leaks.
11. Close expansion tank.
12. If the venting procedure has to be carried out again, allow DME to drop completely (ignition key removed for approx. 3 minutes), then repeat from Point 5
Tried on my BMW x5 F15 2014 model but the pump didn’t kick in.
Do I leave the bleeder screw loose.during the purging?
No. Also, don't leave the cap off.
@@cbtsmith1 Thank you, I did the job and it went very smoothly.
Great stuff, thanks SO MUCH!!!
Perfect
So when we use the air release screw on the expansion tank (the little black plastic screw) to bleed the air out of the system? Should I leave it loose during the whole 8 minutes duration when the electric pump runs?
Why can no one answer this
No. Do not leave the bleed screw open.
@@cbtsmith1 but from time to te when engine is cold and off by loosening bleeding screw i could get air out
I just replaced my 2003 bmw X5 4.4 water pump, thermostat and coolant reservoir.. this did not work.. I'll check my battery next 👍 thanks
Thanks Champ
Hi mine did not turn off after bleeding what could be the problem?
What about the N63TU?
I have a pattern goggling sound coming from the AC vent especially with the heater setting while driving. It comes in a 2 sec pattern.
I just replaced the thermostat and do the bleeding procedure once, do I need to do it again to resolve?
Hello, if it sounds like you have air bubbles making their way through your heater core, we would highly recommend bleeding the system again and topping off the reservoir as needed.
At what mileage I expect it to fail? I have 2016 328i xdrive with 115k km on it
We have seen them fail as early as 30k and seen them going strong at over 200k, no real way to say, unfortunately.
This purging procedure is indicated by the mark, when the electric water pump is changed.
I have a bigger issues...I change thermostat and bleed system...it blast all Coolant out from been hot
And sound boiling...
Why
New pump sigan viendo
My upper radiator hose collapse in the morning, so there is negative vacuum, any advice?
they dont care.. mine did same
Hi there i was wondering if you happen to know is my 2007 bmw 320i msport 2.0l petrol has this function the engine code is n46b20bf any help wpild be appreciated thanks ian
How do we know if our battery is strong?
Lol
Hi , can you please tell me how to stop this process , each time I'm opening the doors or lock it pump automatically start and it cause my battery drained completely .
bad water pump
Hi.. my F10 520i 2012, the radiator fan spins at max speed very loud especially when i stop or idling and with high outside temperatures. No overheating no error code. Flushed coolant, pulled a vaccum with tool and followed the bleeding procedure but problem still unresolved. Coolant flow stream in the tank is good so i assum the pump is good. Replaced thermostat and tempt sensor but no help. Been driving with this problem for over a year with no overheating. Please help no one has figured out the issue so far
Idk about BMW but I work on other cars and that usually happens when the fan control module located on the fan goes bad, ecu fail safes by blowing max all the time. Then again you don’t have any of the common codes for a failed water pump?
Also my 328i had that problem when the coolant temp sensor went bad, but you said you replaced it already
Thanks for your reply. Yes I changed the temperature sensor and thermostat I don't have any water pump or fan error code. I don't know what to do next before I change the water pump which is costly. I must say the oil temp on the gauge never exceeds 90 degree Celsius. However at temperatures above 90 degree Celsius in the hidden menu the fan starts increasing in speed to max
@@kevinmpe8363 hmm usually fan control modules don’t trip codes, does it just always run even when it first starts or it has to reach temp and then it just stays?
@@Use2FACTAUTH when I start the car the fan starts running immediately but at low quiet speed, even with AC off. As the temperature goes up the fan speed increases and increases to maximum. Then the speed starts to switch between medium and maximum very loud when idling especially with high outside temperatures
Thank you. God bless you and those like u
Wait I taught you supposed to keep the headlights on auto?
This problem could see a damaged water pump ,? (Engine cooling system, reduced power operation: coolant pump temperature threshold 1
exceeded.) code 20A904
mine wasn't working, my 740li kept turning off although i could hear the pump starting to bleed. soo you have to activate the hidden menu, hold down dash button, then scroll for system test, then hold that down, then it will ask to start and hold that down. car will stay on and the bleeding will commence👌
Just replaced the water pump and thermostat, I have good stream coming out when the car is on but no water streaming whn car is off during bleeding process. I hear the water pump activate but no water streaming any help? Single dad here thanks
Now I know why my won’t work probably I have a weak battery
What about B47 engine f10?
Mind is not doing it...smh does this mean I need a new water pump?
Taylor, you want to make sure the battery is fully charged, and the door remains open, heat on high... If at that point you still cannot get it to go, there is a possibility the pump may be dead. A further inspection will be needed.
@@fcpeuro Thank You
