Randy Savage vs Austin Idol (Mid-South Coliseum, 5-14-84) Memphis Wrestling

- Опубліковано 22 січ 2010
- Fast paced action at the Mid-South Coliseum as champion Randy Savage takes on Austin Idol in a grudge match with the International Heavyweight title on the line.
Their grudge was touched off when Idol put Angelo Poffo in a patented "Las Vegas leg lock" (the figure four), causing an injury which forced Angelo to walk on crutches. Now Randy has his chance to get a piece of Idol but, unfortunately, he must defend his title too. Can "The Macho Man" keep his emotions in check? Can he avoid Idol's Las Vegas leg lock by beating all the snot out of him?
Date: May 14, 1984

I was so happy as a kid when idol beat savage.
2 legends. I miss these days so much
Austin Idol should have been a bigger star. He's the perfect go between of Superstar Graham and Ric Flair
Chris Sams I agree with you on that!
+Chris Sams he refused to fly after being in the same plane crash as flair. that is why he never became a bigger star.
Idol wasn't in the same crash as Flair. His was a few years earlier.
Both crashes happened in 1975.
He was a great heel. Too bad he never made it to WWE. Vince's infatuation with "larger than life" characters killed any hope of great matchups.
I spent many Monday nights at the Mid-South Coliseum in the early to mid eighties. I might have been at THIS particular match, I don't recall. But one of the memories that sticks out was during an Austin Idol match, as he was introduced as "The American Dreamboat"! One intoxicated fan yells to the mat, "You're no dreamboat, You're a SHIPWRECK!" Good times.... 🤣
I love the barricade consisting of one strand of rope; makes for the ultimate fan experience.
Macho man randy savage was wild in those days of mempiis wrestling, rip randy savage you will never be forgotten
THE Las Vegas "leg lock" !!!
Macho Man was never going to get a 3 count in this match with Paul Morton as the Ref lol
Morton was so slow in this match.
Truly a time of gods. Savage. Lawyer. Idol. Rude. Booked the way it should, not the clownish wwf
Billion Dollar Company? 🤔
Randy was very strong and very controlled in all of his moves! He really was and still will be the Greatest Wrestler of all Time.
Randy is dearly missed. He was one of a kind. A true superstar.
Nacho Man is overrated in todays era. Often by smarks who are second in life, they always cheer for the second fiddles, because they're also second in life.
💯 agree, 80's Savage is the GOAT
idol is a true legend.
I really loved Randy's dive over the ropes and pull the neck of his opponents down onto the ropes. I can't think of another wrestler who did that but Randy executed it with perfect athleticism.
Idol sold so well
IMOhe sold *too* well as a face. Then when he inevitably turned heel the selling was...different, shall we say. He still sold just fine but not nearly as exaggeratedly.
great wrestling with two legends idol and savage
wrestling is always real to me great back in the day wrestling
If I'm not mistaken that ref is wrestler Ricky Morton of the Rock n Roll Express' father Paul Morton. He passed away in 2010
vivahernando1 Correct.
My God, Savage was such a great athlete!
By pro wrestling standards, absolutely. He was a legit MLB prospect in the early '70s and it shows. You can alway tell who was in pro/college sports and who wasn't.
Great battle between 2 legends! Cool footage
great match, the action was non-stop. No arm bars or headlocks just good brawling
Listen to that crowd
I know dead people that could've made a 3 count faster than that referee.
That was Paul Morton, Rick Morton's father. He was an old school ref. And he was never in a hurry to count to three.
Everybody watching nation wide, all over the world too yeah, on the video scope knows those were slow counts. 123! WHAT"S SO HARD ABOUT THAT ANY SCHOOL KID CAN DO IT!
Tommy Marlin was slower than Morton.
He was no Tommy Young that's for sure.
So true! Paul Morton played the “ never see what’s going on” kayfabe gimmick perfectly, but I hated his being the ref when I was a kid! Lol!!
I have never seen such a bouncy ring in my life!!!
If you listen to one if the Jim Cornett Podcasts, he goes on to say that the ropes were actually made out of airplane cables wrapped in black tape.
Tape***
Not particularly any color. The WWWF or later WWF used regular ropes.
@@nonomanrectoris9412 I was referring to the floor of the ring, a trampoline...
Yeah, but they sounded magnificent.
This was early Randy savage..he had just a handful of moves…the punch to the head, standing elbow to the top of the head, throws his opponent out of the ring, top rope jump with elbow or double fist to top of the head and of course his iconic flying elbow drop from the top rope.
Great match! Thanks for posting.
RIP MACHO
IDOL MANIA BE FORE HULK A MANIA!
@Buckeyecat2002 ...well he isn't actually from Venice Beach either.
Lancer should have been the match caller here
I remember when randy savage made his bebut match in WWF ppl were calling him a washed up has-been. LOLOLOL in reality he hadn't even started yet...
I grew up in East Tennessee, so me and my friends always watched Memphis and Southeastern Championship Wrestling. And ICW out of Lexington Ky, Savage was ICW champ before the promotion folded and Savage went to Memphis. But myself and all my buds thought it was so funny how Idol could beat Savage but would lose to Jimmy Golden (Bunkhouse Buck) 1-2 years later in Southeastern 😁
wwe should make a DVD of Memphis wrestling
I don't think they can. They don't own the whole videography. Jerry Jarrett only owns a piece of it, I think Lawler and Eddie Marlin may own the rest.
I am happy to say that the WWE Universe does not own any % of Memphis Wrestling, USWA, GWF, 75% of the NWA footages, TNA, or ROH :))
GodWon The Victory No they shouldn’t.
The Omni's ring in the days of GCW was not only bouncy, it was the coolest looking ring in wrestling...
Always looked like it would've been so much more challenging to keep balance and do power moves with the floor giving under they're feet... Awesome
why you telling me this i don't care if it's fake i still love it .
+Mr. Bludclot i'll never call wrestling fake somebody said it was fake it's one of my favorite sports
+Mr. Bludclot ame old school wrestling is the best
It was real back then. Unscripted
I love tree bark. It makes me feel loved. Lol
Austin was before my time watching........BUT I know him as a manager for current NWA.... so I thought I'd take a look.
Randy macho man savage you and Austin Idol never seen macho man call for the bell
Damn. Two of my favorites.
Randy is the best
i love wrestling it's one of my favorite sports
I love soup.it makes me feel sexy?lol.tell me your like 8yrs old right!
The concrete though!
Great 8 minute match.
May have been the last time someone submitted to a figure four
the impact sound is from them stopping on the mat which seems to have a mic under it. But it makes it feel like its from the punch to the head.
He really was a son of a gun.
back when there were no mats around the rings, it was real when i was kid
Austin idol was a fun bad guy loved matches with Lawler and macho man he sold it well
Agree 100%!
Chris I agree also...a cross between both!!
5:47.. Macho flips upside down and lands on his Neck.. never seen him do that in WWF but he did It later in his career in Spiderman when he was ABSOLUTELY JACKED and lost his flexability.. he injured his neck very badly and wass not the same after that and had pain the rest of his days... he did It over and over in the movie even though he was injured because the dirextor liked It.. what a tough SOB and he had to be alomost 50 by then... For my money, at his peak, he had IT ALL... best ever along with HBK and Flair... and now Omega.....
Do you have April 23, 1984 on tape? It's the night where Humongous beat Lawler for the title, then won a back-street match.
I wouldn't be surprised if they had to wipe their feet before they left the ring.
I could not have a better birthday month (May) this….finding Memphis Wrestling just now? I’m following and sharing from facebook!
-hoping for a handsome jimmy emoji 😂 but for real.
Were you a fan of Memphis Wrestling back in the 80's? I grew up watching this (I was raised an hour south of Memphis in Arkansas on The Mississippi River side of Arkansas).
Good lord, maybe the skeleton that is the ref could pick up the count a little bit.
back when they didn't execute 30,000 finishers just to set up a count out or dq...nice match
I've always loved the sound other Memphis wrestling rings. Does anyone have any info on these? I wonder who made these rings.
@samsdaddy0525 That's exactly right, according to sources.
いいね!
why did Idol never go to Crocket or the WWF in the mid 80s?
i agree austin idol should've been call wwe and wcw. he was that good. great legend.
+lanzacash He didn't say anything about what you seem to be accusing him of being. He just said that Idol would have been a star in WCW, or WWF.
Than what are you doing here?
Is the Crypt Keeper the special referee? How slow can he count, geez.
chazatlas Man that’s Ricky Morton’s dad!!!
Paul Morton, RIP, was always slow and out of position.
That was his last match. After that he went to WWE as Randy "Macho Man" Savage.
In his documentary Savage said that he asked his mom what a "macho Man" was, when she told him what it was he said he'd found his name. That was at the beginning of his career long before wwf. I love how people make up facts about someone's career and then act like the foremost expert on that person. Watch a documentary and an interview or two and come back.
Wet Pack Not true him and Lawler had a loser leave town match where he dropped AWA Southern Title to Lawler.
@@XAmericanRenegadeX I always thought he got it from the '70s disco song of the same name. I like learning new stuff 😊
Does anyone know if Savage had his character before or after he joined the WWF?
Josh Waldorf Before. The only thing he did different when he went to WWF was add Elizabeth to his side.
Wwf added the "Macho King" gimmick which Mach quickly dumped when corporate said he was too old to compete with the young guys and he went to WCW.
Rasslin!!💚
was that ref like 97 years old? he was super slow
tappakeggaday1 He was around 60, early 60s. Lol
These guys weee having to kick out at 1 because the ref was so out of position and the count was so slow.
I think Frank Morell is the faster 3 counter than Paul Morton lol
I agree idol should have been a bigger star he wAs a better wrestler then ricflair
Where's Liz?
Slowest counting ref EVER!
And I always thought Bronco Lubich has a slow count…
Not to mention out of position. Took at least 3 seconds for him to get down and start counting.
☺😆😊
Austin Idol doesn't need to be humble, because he has nothing to be humble about.
Randy open up a can of whopass!!!
The referee is slowwwwwe
@Frederick Wells
LOL
Man, this ref is L...A...M...E...!!!
very very slow count
That ring has more sag in it than a 20 year old cheap horse.
The mat and ring in Memphis always looked like the absolute worst in the business.
Duck Tape to cover the holes in the ring....
Memphis wrestling always had the dirties ring!
And the very best action, wwf pure trash
@hbk72777 Just an honest observation. Sorry the truth hurts you. Now Lanna . . . Go write some bad poetry and leave true geniuses alone.
I hope that ref didn't get paid for that performance. geezus
That ref freaking sucked lol
Savage was a damn good wrestler before he became a clown, in clown clothes.
Savage was an awesome talent but he ruined his career by becoming a colourful clown in wwf.
Paul Morton. The worst referee in the world. Worst than Dusty Bellbaumber.
You obviously never watched Bronko Lubich
Savage, like Hogan, is one of the most over rated wrestlers to ever step into a ring. he was nothing more then a mid card performer at best. To say he sucked would be an injustice to people who worked each night who did suck. They haven't quite come up with a word yet for such a mediocre talent as Poffo. A man who wouldn'tknow an ankle lock from an anklebracelet. And had all the class of a back alley wino . . .
Wrong
So wrong
belle U know nothing about wrestling!! Savage is one of the greatest of all time and thats Fact. U idiot!!
Wrestling isnt just about 'the moves'. It's about being able to get a reaction out of the crowd! Talking on a mic and being able to keep the crowd's attention...is a hella skill. Macho Man was a great actor in the ring. He could sell both being the maniac...as well as 'begging' for his life when the good guy started to get the upper hand on him (only to find a shady way to get the upper hand back).
This referee is slowly awful and awfully slow all at the same time.
