I love this story. Ward couldn't sue Austin without exposing the business. Well played, Mr. Idol. Well played.

I bet Fred Ward came down with Idolmania soon after finding the $5000 loss in is checking account statement. Idolmania ran a bit too wild for him. Maybe a young Sterling Golden took notes.

Not sure exactly what year this Battle Royale took place but i ran the inflation calculator using 1978 for 5K and it was equal to just under 20K in value at that time.

Fred Ward was the guy that would call Wrestlers by near names, like Rusty Rhodes, Crasher Blackwell, Sailor Bart Thomas, Superstar Willy Graham and others.

That was a funny story!! I met Fred Ward as a kid he always came off as a nice man. He let me and some other kids meet The Rock n' Roll Express during one show.

The question I have is, did this cause Austin to be banned from Georgia? The reason I ask is I don’t remember him in Georgia past the early 80’s, but he was a consistent performer for Ron Fuller in Southeastern(Dothan/Birmingham) in the mid 80’s

I don't know the time frame of the check cashing but Fred Ward mainly just promoted Columbus and central Georgia. It was a different booking office from Atlanta back then.

spectrumlocalb191 The check actually said Austin Idol on it, and he kept it for a while and then cashed it at a bank where they knew him. I heard this from Austin Idol's mouth so idk why he said this here.

spectrumlocalb: I dunno but I wish all of them were this stupid. Me, you, Chandler down there and everyone else would be making out of there with cash once we applied our minds.

Haha this is one of the best wrestling story's ever... I just found out about this old school wrestler and already a big fan. They should of pushed him not Hogan but idol was to cool so he couldn't act that campy

What a fake and BS story. First Cornette said he cashed it in Columbus because "everyone there knew who won the battle royal". Then Idol said he cashed it in Atlanta. No bank employee would cash a check, especially an old check, made out to "The Winner of the Battle Royal". Especially an out of town check for that amount, without calling the bank it was drawn on or the issuing company. Then he said he made the check out to "Austin Idol" and they cashed it. So his ID, which any bank would have required for an out of town check for $5,000, said "Austin Idol", as well as his bank account (he said he use to bank there), instead of his real name? Yeah, ok.

Cornette was telling the story he heard 2nd or 3rd hand so some details were wrong on his end before hearing it from Idol. Wrestlers back in the day would sometimes use their "Stage" names at banks, it's been discussed on Cornette's podcast before. You are thinking of bank rules today, life was different heck in the 80's when I was a kid and probably even more so in the 70's. This is absolutely a true story.
